A force is a push or a pull . . .

that causes an object to move, stop, or change direction.

Page 5: Forces! What Is Force? It takes a force to move something

When you push an object, it moves away from you.

Page 6: Forces! What Is Force? It takes a force to move something

When you pull an object, it moves toward or with you.

Some Types of Forces

• Gravity • Friction

• Magnetism • Erosion (wind and water)

Gravity

Page 17: Forces! What Is Force? It takes a force to move something

Gravity:the force that pulls all objects in the universe towards each other’s center.

Page 18: Forces! What Is Force? It takes a force to move something

GravityThe mass of an object determines how much gravity that object has. For example:

The moon and Earth are pulling on each other. The Earth is bigger than the moon so its gravitational pull is stronger. That is why the moon orbits the Earth. What would happen if the moon was bigger than the Earth?

Friction

Page 20: Forces! What Is Force? It takes a force to move something

Friction . . .a force that acts against something when two surfaces rub against each other.

Page 21: Forces! What Is Force? It takes a force to move something

A softball player sliding into home on the rough dirt has a lot of friction and can stop.

Page 22: Forces! What Is Force? It takes a force to move something

A sled on smooth ice will keep sliding and is hard to stop because it has only a little friction.

May the Force Be With YouActivity Stations

Page 28: Forces! What Is Force? It takes a force to move something

Station 1:Building a Card House

You must use build a card house usingAll of the cards in the deck.

The house must be a minimum of 5 stories highwith 3 rooms on each floor.

Page 29: Forces! What Is Force? It takes a force to move something

Station 2: Marble Motion and ForcesBuild a ramp and roll a marble down a ramp. At the end of the ramp the marble pushes a cup until it stops on graph paper.

Station 3: Force and Friction LabPull the following materials with the spring scale and

record your information

Station 5: FORCE MOTION AND FRICTION RAMPS

Use the 3 ramps to record how a toy car moves along different surfaces.
