Brixx Wood Fired Pizza has recently opened in downtown Fishers. Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, this franchise represents the first of its kind to open in the Midwest.

"We’re not your typical pepperoni/cheese pizza joint," says Mike Sosman, head chef and manager at Brixx Wood Fired Pizza. "We specialize in gourmet pizzas, pastas, salads and sandwiches using fresh ingredients, and our focaccia and pizza doughs are homemade….The wood flavored oven gives off a smoked aroma that is light, not overpowering, and yet makes us unique."

Come taste the bruschetta tomato appetizer made with homemade mozzarella cheese as you sip on a martini or cocktail. Choose from 24 local craft beers or 14 wines by the glass to complement your favorite wood fired pizza like the buffalo

chicken or spicy shrimp. Whether you’re in the mood for a pasta dish such as the Heavenly Chicken Bacon Alfredo or the lighter fare of a fresh salad or wrap, you will find nothing other than fresh food with attention to detail.

If you’re craving something not seen on the menu, then the chef will personally come by and visit your table to hear your wishes and prepare your meal according to your preferences.

"You can get pampered by the chef without even knowing who he is," says Mike. "Our restaurant is distinctive in that we are sensitive to people with allergies and those who request vegan and/or gluten free menu items."

In fact, gluten free pizzas are prepared on separate surfaces from those containing wheat. The gluten free crust contains rice and quinoa.

If you watched NBC’s hit reality show “American Ninja Warrior” recently, you may have seen a neighbor or two.

Andy Smith is a teacher at Fishers High School and lives in Noblesville. Dean Mosier is a Fishers resident who competed alongside Andy on the Ninja Warrior’s July 6 episode. The two were chosen from 50,000 entries to compete in a series of challenging obstacles over water.

Andy teaches stage craft at FHS, instructing students to build scenery for the school’s theater and musical productions. So it was nothing for Andy and his neighbor Dave Steenburg to build a 14-foot tall warped wall obstacle in his driveway for training.

Andy says his family has been watching the show since it began, and they always wanted their dad to compete. But when a series of health problems seem to slow Andy down over the past few years, he feared his kids would

no longer see him as a possible contender, so that’s when he decided to do it!

“It was a lot of fun, and I hope my kids see that you can overcome your obstacles and just keep moving forward,” says Andy.

Andy is an eight year veteran of the Indiana National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1998 at the end of his term of service.

The show did not air Andy’s final attempt on the July 6 episode where Andy says he made it to the second obstacle, then slipped through ropes and into the pool of water below.

“It was a great experience, and just stepping up onto that platform was a thrill for me!” says Andy.

Dean, a digital artist with an Indianapolis-based ad agency called The Basement, used his one time Navy SEAL training for the competition. On the July 6 episode, viewers watched as Dean made it to the fourth obstacle where he finished putting all the

pegs in the holes, then fell back into the water below.

Dean says he may try out again for the show, and Andy already has his sights set on the Vegas finals next year.

Good luck to our neighbors, Andy and Dean!

A Fishers resident didn’t make it to the final round of Jeopardy but did win some big bucks on the game show earlier this summer!

“I was just glad to be a part of it all,” says Sawyer. “It’s a fun game, and I really enjoyed it.”

Sawyer Morgan, 22, won the competition July 7 on Jeopardy and pocketed $11,590.

Morgan graduated from Purdue University in May with a degree in chemical

engineering and will be attending the University of Washington this fall to work on his doctorate in chemical engineering.

He says he passed Jeopardy’s online test last January and was invited to Chicago in February for an interview and more tests.

Morgan says he had some great prep work by being a part of WTHR’s Brain Game in 2010 where he competed with Hamilton Southeastern Schools.

His final appearance on Jeopardy was Wednesday, July 15. Congratulations to Sawyer!

F ishers has gone through many changes and names. Back in 1872, it was called "Fisher’s Switch" when Salathiel Fishers distributed his land into lots within

the town. Then in 1891, the land was referred to as Fisher’s Train Station and declared a legal corporation. Later in 1893, it became "Fishers Switch" (dropping the apostrophe), and finally in 1908, it was named just plain "Fishers." Once a small town, Fishers is now a prospering city and far from ordinary.

Since December 22, 2014, under the direction of Mayor Scott Fadness, Fishers has undergone significant transformations. He and his team have focused on encouraging business growth, creating quality jobs and redeveloping a new and robust downtown area while maintaining a safe environment with which Fishers citizens are accustomed. So far, in less than six months, they’ve already accomplished many goals including:

q Collaborating with stakeholders to fix the school funding formula

w Providing a seamless transition from a town to a city with no differences in city services

e Planning for the expansion of Launch Fishers (launchfishers.com) to a new building while forging a partnership with Ball State.

In his orchestration of sheer success, Fadness manages to surround himself with key colleagues.

For instance, Leah McGrath has recently accepted a position as Deputy Mayor. She presents a well-rounded professional

background with expertise in marketing research, public relations and governmental affairs. She is eager to share her experience and begin her new role in helping to plan, contrive and navigate for the ultimate destination as we continue our journey as a young emerging community.

"I’m like the Chief of Staff helping to make sure all departments are functioning together for areas like public safety, culture, recreation, business and neighborhood development, so that we can all work toward the same vision for our community," says Leah.

Although she officially started her new position on June 29, Leah has already begun preparing her agenda with her networking charm since the beginning of June.

"So far, I’ve been doing a lot of listening and learning by talking with directors as we help facilitate the City of Fishers Comprehensive Plan, designed by Mayor Fadness," says Leah. "This plan is like a roadmap of where we are going as we head into 2040, but the areas are not shaded in yet. Fishers has grown so rapidly….This plan allows us to anticipate economic growth, roadways, trails, parks, land use and neighborhood planning to meet the needs of residents and the standards for quality of life."

Leah appreciates Fadness and his innovative efforts to uplift and streamline the city.

She says, "Fadness has done a great job in his initiative and in carrying out his vision for Fishers to further foster an entrepreneurial city….He has such gumption and knows how to take the ideas of others and make them a reality."

HOW DID SHE ARRIVE?Leah grew up in Pendleton, Indiana. She attended Pendleton Heights High School, graduating in 1996. She went to Purdue University and initially began her studies in Electrical Engineering, especially since the subject of math had always come easy to her. However, she recalls having to break the news to her dad one day that she wanted to change her major after falling in love with one of her communication classes. She eventually graduated with a major in Communications and a minor in Political Science.

"I developed a passion for public policymaking. I found it fascinating, and I really enjoyed the aspect of problem solving," says Leah who had completed her internship with the Indiana State House of Representatives.

Then for five years, Leah worked as a Qualitative Marketing Research Consultant for Harper where she traveled extensively. During this time, she married her husband, Brian McGrath, and together they started a family.

In order to establish a sense of balance among her career and family life, Leah decided to start her own business, Smart Vision, LLC, where she provided communications and governmental affairs consulting.

IACT INVOLVEMENT: MAKING CONNECTIONS ALONG THE WAYShe also worked with the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT) where she eventually became the Director of Communication and Research. Later, she became the Government Affairs Director.

While working on the Government Affairs team, Leah recalls first meeting Mayor Fadness.

"In 2011, we were distributing funds for the 911 Funding Project. I would ask Scott questions about Fishers. He probably doesn’t remember me," she says with a laugh. In 2013 when Fadness was running for Mayor, she helped support his campaign. She recalls how they would bounce ideas off each other with their municipal endeavors.

"I’ve known Leah for a couple years as we worked on legislative issues at the Statehouse," says Fadness, the first Mayor of Fishers. "She was able to grasp public policy issues and had a strong ability to work with different stakeholders and build consensus."

Later she connected with another colleague and former neighbor.

"As a board member of Launch Fishers, I remember interviewing with Leah when she was with IACT working on the procedures for giving an award," says Pete Peterson, President of Fishers City Council. "Leah is an absolute joy to work with. She is tireless, energetic and has a great frame of mind as a problem solver. She looks at things positively as in, ‘Let’s deal with this problem’ always with the glass-is-half-full-attitude."

Peterson admires Mayor Fadness for his unselfish decisions when hiring the people who surround him.

"Scott isn’t afraid to hire staff smarter than him, but that’s what makes him such a smart manager," says Peterson. "We’re really lucky to have him as our Mayor."

In addition to working on the Comprehensive Plan and other vital initiatives, Leah will also manage daily operations and support Mayor Fadness by filling in for him whenever he is unable to fulfill speaking requests in the community. This will allow the Mayor to focus on community engagement and economic development.

"Leah is a great addition to our team, and I’m glad to have her on board," says Fadness.

When asked what excites her most about becoming the Deputy Mayor, Leah replies, "This job is like the icing on the cake because I will have this amazing chance to serve the community where my family lives and our life happens. Fishers is a young city that is still maturing. I have the ability to do something positive and impact it."

Leah and her husband, Brian, have three boys: Patrick (10); Nathaniel (8); and Ethan (6). They also have a dog and a bearded dragon to help make their family complete.

The City of Fishers may have gone through its share of names and changes, but no matter what you call it, this extraordinary community exudes a safe, optimistic and up-and-coming vibe stretching from the Nickel Plate District to the outskirts of Hamilton County. There’s a unique and upbeat spirit among its citizens who are happy to share in the wealth of safety, culture, recreation, opportunity and economic growth and are proud to call Fishers their home.

Janet C. Striebel is a Fishers resident and freelance writer. She and her husband, Doug, have three children: Ryan, Jessica and Justin. She has been writing for atGeist.com for more than seven years and claims that the best part is meeting all the interesting people in her community.

"... I will have this amazing chance to serve the community where my family lives and our life happens. Fishers is a young city that is still maturing.

BRINGING FRESHFLAVOR TO FISHERS

Alley's Alehouse

Page 15: Fishers Magazine August 2015

Tucked away just inside Pinheads Bowling, a redesigned restaurant is bringing new flavor to Fishers. What used to be Louie’s Bar and Restaurant is now Alley’s Alehouse, a bar-and-grill style restaurant that fuses classic favorites with fresh high-quality ingredients.

Alley’s goes out of their way to deliver the freshest food possible. The kitchen staff, headed by Executive Chef John Hoog and Sous Chef RodLee Lancaster, goes as far as making their own corn tortillas daily and pickling their jalapeños on-site. Menu specialties include their Loaded Chorizo Fries, The BBQ Pit Pizza, the Drunken Goat Cheese Burger and the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. Going beyond their already diverse menu, Alley’s also has unique weekly dishes.

"Two years ago, we made the commitment that we were going to try to get fresher food, better food and higher-quality ingredients. We didn’t want to carry a processed product," said Kevin Walter, Chief Operating Officer at Pinheads. "The first thing we started with was pizza, and then we went through the rest of the menu. Before rolling the menu out, we decided to remodel to reflect the product that we were serving."

Designed by Joni Baumgardner, the restaurant features a ‘rustic comfort’ design with two large stone fireplaces surrounded by chairs and couches. Edison style lights hang from the ceiling with industrial cables, providing a warm glow and unique setting. With two miniature bowling lanes as well as beach volleyball courts and a tiki bar outside, Alley’s uses its location to its advantage.

"Our goal was to surprise people’s expectations with both decor and food quality in a place they were probably not expecting," said Walter. "Being attached to a bowling alley can be a disadvantage at times, but I like to see it as an advantage in that I can change people’s perspective."

Page 16: Fishers Magazine August 2015

Alley’s Alehouse features a huge bar with 30 draft beer options as well as local, craft and rotating seasonal taps. But Alley’s is also kid-friendly with entertainment options inside and outside of the restaurant and a kid’s menu.

"This is one of a few places where the adults are very comfortable, but the kids can have a great time," said Walter. "The facility is now an ideal place for adults to feel comfortable with or without the kids."

Alley’s has already experienced success with a packed restaurant on their opening night. Reviews and surveys praise the restaurant, commenting on the quality of the food.

"We want to be thought of as a restaurant, not just a restaurant attached to a bowling alley," added Executive Chef Hoog.

Writer / Kara ReibelPhotographers / W.H. Bass Photo (provided by the Indiana Historical Society), Brian Brosmer (current day photos)

Celebrating over 118 years in business, the W.H. Bass Photo Company still resides in the same building since inception in 1897 along South

New Jersey Street. The Bass Photo Building is now a historic landmark with its owners solidly rooted to the past but working towards the future.

William H. Bass was a local teacher at Shortridge High School who took up photography in 1887. By 1899, the company was operating as Bass and Woodworth. Woodworth sold his interest to Bass in 1904, officially creating the W.H. Bass Photo Company. Theodore (Ted) Abel became a Board member by 1936, and today his grandson, Gerry Abel, along with his wife, Kathy, run the company.

“My grandfather, Ted Abel, hung around Mr. Bass in the early

1900s as a kid. He was eventually given a broom and worked his way up," says Gerry, third generation Bass Photo Company owner. “Developer is in the blood. I grew up with a dark room at home and spent weekends at the shop.”

Gerry watched his father, grandfather and the technicians work, and he played hide and seek, enjoying the revolving doors on the dark room. “It’s an honor to be a third generation photographer with The Bass Photo Company,” shares Gerry. “But what makes my experience so rewarding is working alongside my wife, Kathy.”

Perhaps Bass Photo is best known for its massive collection of historical photos taken of Indianapolis since 1899. “The photos of the street scenes were actually taken using extra sheets of film after a job,” shares Kathy. She explains, “The photographer would ride the trolley car along Virginia into downtown and snap shots of buildings and scenes of people in the streets with the extra photo paper leftover from their job.”

These “extras” have served as the photographic history of Indianapolis, creating the notoriety that is associated with The Bass Photo Company. “We feel that these vintage photos are an integral part of recording the history of Indianapolis from 1897,” shares Kathy.

In 1987, the Indiana Historical Society (IHS) purchased the vast collection of over 200,000 negatives. These negatives are now preserved and cataloged at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick History Center, creating a massive archive accessible online or by request in the IHS library.

Susan Sutton, Director of Digitization at the IHS located at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick History Center, pieced together these beloved negatives in the book “Indianapolis: The Bass Photo Company Collection by Indiana Historical Society Press,” 2008.

“I was really excited to write the book about this fantastic body of work. Like so many other people, I love these photographs,” shares Sutton. “Researching the company itself gave me an even greater appreciation of the images. Everything I found pointed to people who consciously recorded the history of the city.

“From William H. Bass instructing photographers to shoot

interesting scenes with unused negatives when returning from assignments to Ted Abel sending people out to photograph endangered buildings, this company has a long history of SERVING Indianapolis – not just doing business. Their photographers were talented, and they left a beautiful record of a city as it grew and changed through the 20th century.” Given the incredible history of The Bass Photo Company, what will the future hold? “Our present and future is strong,” shares Gerry. “We are continuing on.”

With clients like Eli Lilly who have used the talents of The Bass Photo Company for over 118 years, it’s hard to not maintain a successful working relationship with that type of track record. “Mr. Lilly used to come over to look at the historic negatives with my grandfather,” says Gerry. “And what’s more, Lilly moved closer to us out of convenience.”

The Abels are grateful for all of their clients. “We are so blessed by our wonderful customers,” says Kathy. “Our business continues to grow and move forward.”

Christy Watson is a mother to three beautiful children and owner of Mama Bears, the “Town Hall of Geist.”

What’s a budding young actress burnt out on the pursuit of the big Hollywood dream to do upon returning back home to Indiana? Why not start a YouTube VLOG of course? Also known as a Video Blog, it is the newest medium for reaching a market of well, basically anyone who comes across it on YouTube. Gabrielle Flowers-Rader and her husband Chad Rader have turned the fresh and young YouTube Vlogging concept into “GabeBabeTV” and what is now their sole career.

The couple who both graduated in 2000 from North Central High School as strangers began their courtship over a wireless network while Rader was a defense contractor in Afghanistan, and Flowers was pursuing her dreams after graduating from Tennessee State with a degree in theater.

What started out as tutorials by “Gabe” on how to make wigs with a group of her friends, garnering over 1,000 followers, has grown to include Rader (affectionately titled “Babe”), their son Chad Jr. and over 160,000 followers who tune in to watch the ins and outs of their family life all from a wireless network just a click away.

“People are growing tired of reality TV and all the scripted drama,” says Chad. Family Vlogging is real stuff. People like to see real stuff.” Other popular VLOGs on the YouTube market include the “Shatards,” “Prank vs. Prank” and “Tyler Oakley,” each of which have over 100,000 subscribers. There is room to grow with YouTube. It’s a relatively infantile marketplace that is definitely drawing the attention of advertisers.

Walmart recently just reached out to Gabe and Babe to be the first spokes-couple plucked from YouTube for their new “Straight Talk” Wireless plan because they liked the positivity and the content of the message of GabeBabeTV.

Bringing the whole production crew to Fishers at the end of May, they filmed Gabe and Babe as they Vlogged at various Fishers establishments including Brooks School Park and Mama Bear’s Bakery & Café! The commercial airs nationally and has already been spotted airing during “The Today Show” on local affiliate WTHR.

So what’s next for this YouTube Vlogging sensation? Hopefully more with Walmart and Straight Talk for the holiday season and an upcoming trip to VidCon in Anaheim, California, with other “Influencers” that are hoping to make their way onto the wireless networks of just about anybody who has interest.

For now, they are blessed to be doing all of this from the comfort of their own community and gaining followers and subscribers to GabeBabeTV every day.

Curley Brothers has specialized in providing the best in masonry and stone applications and exceptional service for exterior, interior and hardscapes for residential and commercial projects since November 1997. Their showroom, conveniently located in Hamilton County, boasts an expansive selection of natural stone, veneer and brick products for their customers to select from.

“We’ve been in the masonry business since 1970,” Tom Curley said. “We’ve seen many trends in brick and stone over the decades.

People went from traditional brick facades to all-white and painted back to regular brick and recently, we are seeing a strong trend in natural and manufactured stone veneer applications. The latest trend is spot stone within brick walls creating an entirely unique look to the finished facade.”

Tom explained that the man-made stone veneer is available in a thin veneer and also a full thickness veneer that are being used in the exterior of homes. Other selections that Curley Brothers Brick and Masonry provides their customers are a wide selection of cultured stone and natural stone. One of the benefits of the manufactured

products is that they are less expensive than the natural stone and easier to apply reducing the labor cost that plays into the over-all affordability factor as well.

As many homeowners are improving their existing homes and upgrading their landscapes to include outdoor living areas and hardscapes, the staff at Curley Brothers Brick and Masonry have seen an increasing trend in outdoor fire pits and full-scale outdoor fireplaces, larger slab face mix pavers.

Owner Mike Curley explained how the geography of the stone dictates the color and variety of stone that they bring into their showroom. They acquire their stone products from Indiana, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and other areas throughout the United States.

“Indiana tends to have more of the grey and tan hues,” Mike explained. “The more colorful stone comes from areas like Wisconsin where glaciers had an effect on the stone in the ground. Although, there is plenty of affordable and attractive stone available, right here in Indiana. Some of our customers like the cultured stone for the reason that one can choose from a variety of colors at Curley Brothers.

The owner and his staff have expanded their outdoor showroom to showcase the variety of outdoor hardscape applications that they provide their commercial and residential customers and invite the public to come out and visit with any of their knowledgeable staff members.

Curley Brothers Brick and Masonry is a family-owned and operated business that promotes the development and growth of their associates. They pride themselves in being the original specialists in masonry and veneer and hardscapes.

“Most of our local competitors do not specialize in both, just one or the other,” Mike stated. “Many of them began their careers working with us before going out on their own.”

Adam Woodall, senior estimator, expressed his dedication to ensuring that their customers receive the highest level of customer service.

“I enjoy working with our customers on their projects,” Woodall said. “I am dedicated to making sure that our customers leave our show room well-informed about their options and that they are excited about their respective projects.”

Mike concluded, “We don’t care if it’s one brick or 100,000 brick; our customers always get the same high level of service and dedication to customer satisfaction from us. We guarantee all of our products and service. We have 30 years of knowledge, experience and creativity behind us.”

Olivia Rusk

Writer / Kara Reibel . Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Throughout July, a movie was filmed on location at various sights in and around Noblesville. The movie is called “Wig’d Out” and is based on the story of Olivia Rusk, a recent Fishers High School graduate who happens to be bald.

The cast and crew utilizes talented national and local actors, musicians and a local filmmaker from Noblesville. “The idea to create a movie started in 2007, and it’s exciting to see it turning into reality,” says Sandy Rusk, Olivia’s mom.

“Marc Price, best known for the role of Skippy in the hit TV series ‘Family Ties,’ will play the role of Chip Winkleton in ’Wig’d Out,’” shares Sandy. “Jose Sepulveda, an accomplished actor from New York City, Kayla Martell who was the first bald contestant due to alopecia in the Miss America pageant, and Marah Collins from the Lifetime TV series ‘Kim of Queens’ all have roles too.”

Olivia has alopecia, a rare autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss. She was initially affected by this disorder at 18 months old, and by third grade, Olivia gave up her wigs and the failed attempts to grow hair. “It was a pivotal day in our lives,” shares Sandy. “For it was that day Olivia decided to express her true self. It changed her life forever.”

Since that time, Olivia has proudly stayed bald. “People think I have cancer,” says Olivia, whose message of “It’s ok to be different” has evolved to encompass anti-bullying. “I have not experienced bullying personally, but I have other friends with alopecia who have. I stand up for them.”

Delivering her message of acceptance, Olivia wrote the book, “Just Your Average Teenager Who Happens To Be Bald” (2012), speaks frequently at schools and now will bring her message to the big screen.

“She’s always been so determined and focused since she was little. Her hair loss could have been devastating,” shares Sandy. “But Olivia has found strength and confidence in coping with alopecia. Our hope is to inspire others with the movie.”

“We have worked on the movie script for three years,” shares director Kate Chaplin of Karmic Courage Productions. “It’s exciting to be filming.” This is Chaplin’s 18th film.

The actors include Carmel High School junior Georgia Simmons. “I was so excited to be cast in the lead! I’ve been in several short films, but this is my first feature,” says Simmons, who shaved her head

for the role. “Olivia is such an inspiration, and I am proud to be involved in sharing her message this way.”

“Olivia’s personality is so bright,” continues Simmons. “She holds so much grace.”

Sandy adds, “I’d like to note that the girls used in the flashbacks portraying a younger Olivia, one does have alopecia – we did not shave her head.” The actress playing the younger bald Olivia is played by Kate Kelly, who drove up from Atlanta for filming. She has alopecia.

On set, special guests such as the Children’s Alopecia Project founder Jeff Woytovich, whose daughter has alopecia, came to watch some of the filming, and he and his daughters will have cameos.

“This is such a fun project, and we have such amazing support from so many,” shares Sandy. “We have amazing sponsors and are very excited about the local band of musicians providing music for our soundtrack,” shares Sandy.

The band, We Are Forever, is comprised of members Alex Ayala, Ricky Ayala, Aren Andersen and Alex Nauth, and they are thrilled to be a part of the movie. “’Wig’d Out’ is a fun venture for us,” shares Alex Nauth, whose band focuses on music for all ages. “The movie is a good fit for us since we like to inspire kids with our music, which fits with Olivia’s story.”

Olivia will continue to serve the community with public speaking engagements, and she will be attending Ball State University where she plans to study education for the deaf.

We Are Forever is about to release an album mid-August with their launch party on August 15. They will perform in Fishers at Studio 37, located inside Ji-Eun Lee Music Academy on 126th and Cumberland Rd.

A NIGHT ON THE FIELDWriter & Photographer / Keeley Miller

On Saturday, August 29, the Fishers Park Foundation and Southeastern Program of Recreational Team Sports (S.P.O.R.T.S.) will be hosting the first ever Sandlot Under the Stars. This one-of-a-kind fundraising event will benefit youth athletic programs.

The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a wine and cheese reception provided by Fresh Market along with a silent auction.

A catered dinner will follow, along with a reverse raffle with the opportunity to win $5,000. Live entertainment and photographers will be present throughout the entire night.

“We thought that it would be great to think of something different that people haven’t attended before,” said S.P.O.R.T.S. Development Director Gretchen Jacobs. “We wanted to make it unusually unique, so they could come out, have an experience

and then hopefully have a fantastic fundraiser that would benefit youth sports.”

Functioning as their largest fundraising event of the year, proceeds and donations will go towards worthy programs such as providing scholarships for families in need. Sandlot Under the Stars will give toward these programs while proving fun as well.

To purchase tickets, visit SportsSandlot2015.auction-bid.org.

TWIGS & TEAA LIFELONG DREAM COMES TRUE

Just a few feet away from Fishers bustling 116th Street is a charming cottage tucked away at 11643 Maple St. At first glance, it looks like a quaint well-kept home, but the sign in front lets visitors know Twigs and Tea is a combination gift shop and tea room.

Stepping into the tea room at Twigs and Tea is like going on a mini European vacation. In fact, several patrons have told owner Debbie Cook that the atmosphere makes them feel like they are in their home country. "I’ve had customers from France, England and even Russia tell me that the tea room is very similar to ones that are in Europe."

Longtime Fishers resident Cook dreamed of opening a tea room combined with a decorating accessory store for many years before it became a reality. She was no stranger to running retail businesses since she operated Twigs Too, which was located on 116th Street for 14 years, and Twigs European Home at her present location for the last five years.

Due to the fact that she was so busy with her interior design businesses along with multiple buying trips to Europe, it never seemed to be the right time to open a tea room. However, when all the recent development began happening in downtown Fishers, it seemed to be the right time to put the dream she had been cherishing into action.

The Nickel Plate District Redevelopment and organizations such as Launch Fishers were a signal to Cook that the area was ready for a tea room with a European sensibility. "I think the commercial growth in the area is just beginning, and it will keep continuing," explained Cook.

Cook’s hunch was correct since the tea room has had a steady stream of visitors since opening. While the gift shop is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., customers can enjoy lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

and Afternoon Tea from 1 to 3 p.m. No reservations are required for lunch or just a cup of tea and dessert, but if a full afternoon tea is desired, patrons must call ahead. In addition, the tea room can be reserved for special occasions such as wedding or baby showers.

Chef Lynda Hynes prepares a daily quiche as well as soups, sandwiches and salads for lunch. Popular is the trio salad platter and homemade herbed fruit scones. Afternoon tea is a plentiful spread of savory sandwiches, scones and sweets. Currently 11 different varieties of tea are offered, and the servers encourage tasting a sample before ordering either a pot of hot tea or a tall glass of iced. The most popular teas are fruity Paris, cinnamon spice and peach. Cook chooses the tea with great care, making sure the quality is superior but at an affordable price. The tea can be purchased to take home in loose leaf form or as sachet bags in a tin.

Cook is also extremely choosy when she decides on the one-of-a-kind items she sells in the gift shop. "I buy from hundreds of different companies, but maybe just a few things from each one," Cook elaborated. "I only buy what I love. When I see something that speaks to me, that’s what I get." Besides decorator items for the home, the gift shop also carries jewelry and scarves.

Plans for the future include expanding the 26 person capacity tea room to accommodate an additional 35 more seats that will overlook a formal garden area. Cook hopes to complete the project by late fall in time for the holiday season.
