Drawing from a Live Model
Dont Talk to the Model While Drawing
This includes talking with other students or moving to another seat,
activities which should be limited to breaks. Not only are such
distractions rude, they cut into the valuable time with the model(which students are paying for).
Requests for Poses
ask during breaks, not when the model is already in a pose

Three Ovals - Head, Ribcage, Pelvis
The influence of the two separate ovals is very important! With lateral
bending in the spine, the angle of the ribcage can be dramatically
different from the angle of the pelvis, causing compression on one side,
and stretching on the other side when bending and twisting.

Showing projectiono Circle the pivot points on the
projecting body parts at the properangle.
*** Tilted joints should turn intoellipses!
o Connect the two circles withstraight lines. The stick is now thecenter line, defining the shortestdistance between pivot-points inthe joints.
o Suppress the hidden side of the far
end circle to indicate that the fullcircle is the projecting end. If anattaching body part sits in front ofthe projecting side of the cylinder, then you need to lose the fullcircle, like you see at the elbows.

Cross Contour Lines
Cross-contour lines describe an object's horizontal or cross-contours rather than its vertical edge (side to side rather
than up and down). They emphasize an object's volume.Saturday, December 1, 2012

How you choose to continue isup to you obviously the most
helpful tool in refining the
figure is direct observation of
the model.
**Remember the differences
b/w male and female bodies
men are more squared-off and
generally have broader
shoulders.

Pivot Points The bones articulate with each other
within joint capsules. There areimaginary centers of movement insidethe joints called pivot points.
It is much easier to think about pivotpoints than trying to decipher and drawthe external view around the joints.
This canprovide
enormous
assistance
when you
want to
organize a
confusing
gesture pose.

sets for observational drawing
***you should be observingwhat it is youre drawing
at least 75% of the time.
o the perception of edges usingline or contour drawing,
o the perception of spaceswithin a drawing through the
use of negative spaceo the perception of the
relationship of angles andproportions also known assighting,
o the perception of lights andshadows using light logic,o and the perception of the
whole, or gestalt, whichincorporates the previousfour perceptual skills.

direction the fabric is going to be pulled. Folds are
caused wherever the fabric is being draped or
stretched.
Generally, you shade away from the fold lines or in
the valleys - any places that a shadow would be cast;
and the highlight appears where light bounces off
the hills made by the raised folds.
