People’s ArmyThis gallery explores the origins of The Salvation Army and looks at some of the stories of the first Salvationists. William and Catherine Booth founded The Christian Mission in 1865, which became The Salvation Army in 1878.

An Army Fighting for Social JusticeThis gallery explores The Salvation Army’s commitment to working with the socially disadvantaged, which began with rescue work amongst London’s prostitutes in the 1880s and expanded to include hostels, maternity hospitals and children’s homes.

A Persecuted ArmyThis gallery explores the opposition to The Salvation Army as it expanded in the 1880s and 1890s, from groups including The Skeleton Army. The Salvation Army was also expelled from Russia and China, and officers were interned during the 1939-1945 war.

A Joyful ArmyThis gallery explores The Salvation Army’s history of musical evangelism, looking at bands, composers and instruments. As well as the familiar brass bands, early Salvationists worshipped with instruments such as violins and guitars.
