Energy consumption (Lighting)in today’s manufacturing and warehousefacilities is a significant portion of anycompany’s operating expense. This op-erating expense remains unchanged atmany companies since it has been a con-stant with little attention paid by most fa-cility managers, or COO administrators.

The larger power consumption deviceslike HVAC, Generators, and Pumps arelooked at when trying to reduce energyconsumption within most manufacturingand warehouse facilities, but lightingwhich typically has the best rate of return, has not been often considered. However, this trend is changing with

the introduction of several energy savinglighting solutions. Fluorescent T-5 and T-8 tubes have been a common solutionover the years offering Continued on page 8

energy cost savings at this time.LEDs do appear to be the futureof lighting with their energy sav-ings and solid state reliability, but until the volumes are in-

creased and the costs to producethese units improves, other lighting

solutions will remain better op-tions in today’s currenteconomy.

An energy savingslighting solution startingto take hold in the mar-ket is induction light-ing. Induction lighting

is a form of fluorescentlighting with a magnetic field gen-

erating the electrical energy to power thebulbs. With the power being generatedthrough the magnetic field instead of com-mon cathodes found in a standard fluores-cent, the failure mode is also removedgiving this lamp a potential life span of100,000 hours. This evolving technologycan also reduce the energy consumption

of a standard metal halide or high pres-sure sodium by 40-50 percent while main-taining or improving the current lightoutput levels. Because induction lightingis a fluorescent based technology it alsocan be utilized with any motion sensor orphoto cell controls due to its instant on ca-pability unlike the older MH and HPSbulbs which need time to cool down priorto restarting. An additional benefit thatinduction lighting has brought is the abil-ity to replace higher wattages like 750Wor 1000W MH and HPS fixtures with400W or 500W units depending on the re-quired light levels of each application. This higher output in the standard fluo-rescent tubes and LED products has yetto be achieved giving induction a leg upon the other options when consideringthese higher output fixtures. To illustratethe effectiveness of induction lighting, please reference the before and after pho-tographs on page 6 showing a typicalmanufacturing facility lit with 400W highpressure sodium fixtures

good energy savings at 40-50 percent, and low installation costs whenreplacing the existing older light-ing technologies like metalhalide (MH) or high pressuresodium (HPS). They work well onmotion detectors and photo cellsproviding even more energysaving options when utilizedin a manufacturing orwarehouse location. Themain drawback when go-ing with fluorescentlighting is the mainte-nance cost that can beassociated with having tochange out the individual bulbs asthe product ages depending on the lifehours of the installed bulbs. LED light-ing solutions are another energy savingslighting making progress within the in-dustry, but its current higher unit costshave prevented its growth in this area withother lighting solutions providing a betterreturn on investment (ROI) with the same

cost of re-lamping within your manufac-turing or warehouse space along with atypical ten year warranty provided by mostcompanies producing this style of lighting. The other lighting technologies will have a30,000 to 50,000 hour life based upon itbeing T-8 or T-5 fluorescent, or LED unitwith a 3 to 5 year warranty.

Based upon the mentioned improve-ments in these energy savings lightingtechnologies there are certainly good op-tions today to improve the power con-sumption and energy savings within anymanufacturing or warehouse location. These lighting improvements should beevaluated thoroughly by all facility man-agers and contractors working with thosefacilities when servicing there locations. Most offer an ROI of two to three yearsand can be financed in many differentways thanks to the low ROI on thechange out. Good rebates are also offeredon these energy savings lighting solutionsby most utility companies or state energyrun corporations.

Renovating older homes withmodern designs and conveniences oftenpose unique challenges for electrical con-tractors, as is evident in a recent projectcompleted by Kleyn Electric. Kleyn, based in Grand Rapids, MI was hired tocomplete the electrical work on a beachhome being renovated on Lake Michigan.Established in 1997, Kleyn Electric is afull-line electrical contractor. The com-pany’s technicians pride themselves onbeing able to provide customers with theknowledge and experience for a first-classinstallation, regardless of the challengesof the project.

The home’s owner, who resides inChicago, uses the lakeside residence as aweekend and holiday getaway. The home-owner was interested in renovating thehome to allow for a more open, modernfloor plan that would highlight views ofthe lake throughout the beach home. Thestructure of the ranch style beach homeneeded a relatively dramatic makeover.Walls in the home would be completelyremoved, allowing for the open floor planthe homeowner was interested in achiev-ing. In addition, the homeowner wantedto upgrade the technology available in thehome for added comfort and convenience.

In looking at the master bathroom,Steve Lotterman of Kleyn Electric andRon Hainer, an experienced lighting de-signer from Crites, Tidey and Associ-ates, needed to accommodate switchesfor eight light sources – a significantamount. The team decided that Leviton’sVizia RF +® System would be an idealfit for the project.

Vizia RF + products give homeownersthe ability to program and control light-ing and select household devices with thetouch of a button. The system does it allby replacing standard switches and dim-mers with intelligent Vizia RF + devices. An ideal fit for retrofit projects, the sys-tem allows an installer to use wiring al-

knows exactly what each button controls, avoiding the con-fusion of numerous, unidentified switches.

Vizia RF + 4-button controllers allow installers to createlighting scenes or control zones/areas throughout the home.Plug-in modules also offer flexibility for adding table andstanding lamps to an automated home. Vizia RF + can also beused for timed events, allowing a homeowner to schedulelights to turn on and off automatically at preset times to en-hance security or enjoy a more convenient lifestyle. The sys-tem is a perfect fit for both retrofit projects and newconstruction.

The team found that beyond solving many of the technicalchallenges of the room, the Leviton Vizia RF + system wasalso less expensive than many other solutions on the market.

As the electrical planning process continued, the teamfound that the Vizia RF + system would be a fit for four otherspaces in the home, including the master bedroom, an areawith an office and recreation room, the living room, and land-scape and porch lighting on the exterior of the home.

“The system is unique in its ability to scale to exactlywhat is needed for a project. An installer can avoid the useof a dimming panel, adding one switch load at a time asneeded,” said Hainer. “Vizia RF + is so easy to use it prac-tically sells itself.”

“We’ve used Leviton products in the past and have had agreat experience with the ease of installation, the quality theyprovide for our customers, and the great working relationshipwe’ve been able to maintain with the company,” said SteveLotterman of Kleyn. “The Vizia RF + system is a perfect so-lution for this project. It not only met the unique technicalneeds of the renovation, but worked well with the aestheticgoals that the homeowner and lighting designer were workingto achieve.”

Once the system was installed, programming it alsoproved to be relatively easy. The Vizia RF + system can beprogrammed manually through a remote or by using theVizia RF + Installer Tool, software that allows an installer tocreate, back up, edit and test the system on any PC runningMicrosoft Windows®. The installer for this project chose tomanually program the system, allowing them to completethe installation process relatively quickly. The installer com-pleted a walkthrough of the renovated beach home late oneevening with the designer to determine the areas and lightingscene levels, and was able to complete the programmingprocess the next morning. Three remotes were included withthe system, enabling the homeowner complete control ofeach room with the touch of a button.

“We are thrilled with the entire renovation, the work ofKleyn, and Leviton’s Vizia RF + system,” said the home-owner. “The house is beautiful, and the fact that I can relax onthe couch, look out at the stunning view we have now, andcontrol many aspects of the home with the touch of a button isgreat. In addition, when we are not at the beach house, ViziaRF + provides added security by automatically turning lightson and off, giving the illusion that the house is occupied. I’vealways loved the beach home, but the added comfort and con-venience that the renovation has provided make it that muchmore exciting to come here and relax.”

Every device needs power and up to a couple ofyears ago, the power line always led to an AC outlet. That ischanging fast as more and more computer and network devicestake advantage of the new power scheme called Power over Eth-ernet (PoE)… putting the power on the same CAT5/6 cable asthe data.

The Advantages of PoEThe advantages of PoE over traditional power sources are

growing… and it won’t be long before a knowledge of PoE be-comes part of the installation job. And, if the installation re-quires a functioning unit such as an operating VoIP phone of IPsecurity camera, it will require that the Ethernet cable be con-nected to both an active data device (such as a switch) and apower source (PoE).The first big advantage of PoE is a device’s power source can

be over 320’ away (the maximum length of an Ethernet run). And secondly, PoE eliminates the need to install a separatepower cable, conduit and outlet (and the time that goes with it).It is no wonder that PoE is gaining a tremendous following andis now widely used to power VoIP phones, IP security camerasand network access points.

The Mix of Power and DataPoE sounds well and good until you realize that it mixes high

power (48 volts up to 300ma or more) of PoE on the same cablethat transmits high speed data between low voltage Ethernetcomputer cards, switches and other devices. The CAT5/6 cablecan certainly handle it but it does give you reason to pause andpay extra attention to what you are doing. To help keep PoEsafe, the IEEE has published standards with numerous provi-sions: One assures that the device providing the PoE will notprovide the power until it sees an appropriate PoE load. Butmany of the PoE supplying devices in the market today seem-ingly fail to follow that standard directly. Some devices alwayshave the 48V switched ON. Others seem to trigger with lessthan the required provocation. And others work very accurately, always waiting for the proper load.

How can I test for PoE during an install?Testing for PoE is more complicated than a AC/DC voltmeter

check. To better understand the complication, a little backgroundis required: An Ethernet cable is made up of 4 twisted pairs ofwires. The 4 twisted pairs are terminated to connector pins 1/2,

3/6, 4/5 and 7/8. The PoE standard requires the 48VDC PoEutilize 2 pairs of the Ethernet cable (not a single pair as youmight think). If a switch provides PoE power, it must use pairs1/2 and 3/6 (this is termed “PoE endspan”). If a power injectorprovides the PoE power (at the patch panel), Continued on page 20

testing for active network devices andvoltages (PoE included). Once spotted, one of the Power Panel’s 3 ultrabrightLEDs alert you to the presence of eitheran active device or voltage. The NetworkPower Panel categorizes the device as ei-ther “Network”, “Phone” or “Power”(POE). If, by chance, all types of devicesexist, then all the LEDs will light.

These ultrabright LEDs are the onlyindication that most users need that adata path and PoE is available for theirdevice. But there is plenty more to learnfrom the Network Power Panel if youwish. For instance, the “Network”LED’s screen displays the speed capa-bilities of the device (10, 100, 100, HD,FD) and the cable pair(s) where thetransmit pulses exist. The “Phone” de-vice’s screen displays cable pair locationand the voltage amplitude of up to 4phones. And, the “Power” device’sscreen displays PoE cable pair location;whether its “midspan” or “endspan”PoE; and the PoE voltage amplitude. And, if you are using the “inline” modelof the Network Power Panel, insert it inbetween the device providing the power(eg PoE switch) and the device (eg VoIPphone) and measure the power con-sumption (watts) of the device. Thepower measurement capability is one ofthe most popular features of the NetworkPower Panel.

The Right Tool Saves TimeLike any installation, the install of VoIP

phones, IP cameras, access points andother PoE devices involve more trou-bleshooting than desired. The NetworkPower Panel is the perfect detective toolbecause it is designed to detect PoE; dis-play its location on the cable; and displaythe amplitude of the signal. It additionallydetects network devices (indicating 10,100, 1000, HD, FD) and phones. Picture#1 shows 48VDC of PoE on pairs 1/2 and3/6 (“PoE endspan”). Picture# 2 shows thepower draw of a recently installed VoIPphone (4 watts). The Network Power Panel is available

two ways: As a standalone unit (modelPOE1000) for $129.00 or bundled in theCable&Power Kit (CPK1000) which in-cludes the popular Real World Certifier for$599.00. See more at bytebrothers.com.

What do all electrical and low volt-age installs have in common? Cable andwire. And as installs become more andmore complicated with the sheer quantity, lengths, and types of cable and wireneeded (i.e. low voltageelectrical, Cat 5/6, HDMI,audio, video, etc.), manag-ing larger installs withmany applications becomesa bigger challenge.

Then there’s safety, which should always comefirst. There are personalsafety issues within everyinstall, especially whenhaving to run wire 10-25feet up in the air. Howmany times have you foundyourself balancing with onefoot off of a ladder, or lean-ing over the side of a lift torun cable over and througheaves or vaulted ceilings, into tight places within crawl spaces orabove stairwells, or along the wall of abuilding?

According to TheBureau of LaborStatistics, in 2009there were 212,760documented cases of work-related fallsthat resulted in time missed from work.

Some of which were, unfortu-nately, fatal. Safety is job one,and a primary way to remainsafety conscious is to keep bothfeet on the ground.

Job efficiency andsafety both directly affectyour company’s overallhealth. The faster you cando jobs, the more jobs youcan do. And keeping in-stallers safer not only keepsthem on the job, but helpsavoid higher insurance pre-miums. So, faster and saferinstalls is the name of thegame. What if you couldachieve both and reducebuyouts as well? What if asimple and relatively lowcost tool could do all three?

Cooper Lighting Introduces the Next GenerationLED LightBAR™ SystemNew system provides unmatched optical performance inboth lumen output and efficiency.Cooper Lighting, an industry leader committed to delivering innovative products

and driving transformational technology in the lighting industry, has announcedit has upgraded its outdoor LED LightBAR™ technology. Internally developed atCooper Lighting’s accredited state-of-the-art LED Innovation Center and inte-grated in multiple product lines, the new system’s unmatched optical perfor-mance delivers improved lumen output and efficiency, while continuing to offer upto 75% in energy savings over traditional High Intensity Discharge (H.I.D.) outdoorlighting sources.Designed to meet today’s demanding energy and environmental needs, Cooper

Lighting’s LightBAR™ technology features the company’s patented AccuLED Op-tics™, which sets the industry benchmark for reliable photometric performance, scalability and energy efficiency. The system’s unique application-specific de-sign allows lumen and energy output to be customized to fulfill the exact needs of the outdoor space—eliminating wasted energyand obtrusive spill light. Designed for both new construction applications or to replace inefficient luminaires, the next generationLightBAR technology is available in two versions (7 LEDs and 21 LEDs), three standard color options (3000K, 4000K and 6000Kcorrelated color temperatures (CCT)), and offered in 13 different optical distributions, providing versatility for every outdoor need, including street lighting, area/site, floodlighting, wall mount, parking garage, canopy and pathway solutions. The updated LightBAR technology offers an increase in efficiency in all optical distributions without degrading optical perfor-

mance, lumen depreciation or lumens per watt (lm/W). Boasting more task lumens per watt, the high efficiency 21 LED LightBARoptical fixtures deliver up to 100 lm/W or 2400 lumens per LightBAR, which outperforms the original 21 LED LightBAR fixture (1800lumens) by 600 lumens – (using the same number of AccuLED Optics) –, while the 7 LED LightBAR optical choice (1900 lumens)also increases its lumen output over the original 21 LED LightBAR.

Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation Expands M12™ LITHIUM-ION System

Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation continues to expand the versatility of their M12™ LITHIUM-ION sys-tem with the introduction of the M-Spector 360™. Featuring best-in-class image quality and the industry’s first

rotating screen for fluid image control, the new tool will revolutionize the market as the next generation in di-agnostic camera technology. “Anyone who has used a digital inspection camera can relate to the difficulty andfrustration experienced when an image cannot be viewed in the correct orientation,” says Corey Dickert, Prod-uct Manager, Cordless for Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation. “The rotating screen has solved this problem bysimply allowing the user to adjust image orientation easily with one hand, keeping the other hand free to control

the cable. Other designs on the market today, such as cameras with a removable screen, force theuser to juggle several components while trying to adjust the image… turning it into a difficult

3-handed operation.”Users will also experience best-in-class image quality with an optimized 2.7” LCD

display that delivers a crisp, clear picture. A 9mm 640x480 digital probe and an enhancedcable provide improved durability and pipe maneuverability in even the tightest spaces, while

four surround LED lights offer superior brightness without shadow or glare. Milwaukee will offer the new M-Spector 360™ withthe industry standard 3ft cable (2313-21), as well as a 9ft cable version (2314-21) that comes with the new Pipe Guide attachmentto navigate pipes better than any scope in its class. A mirror, hook and magnet will also be included to help the user inspect, di-agnose and solve countless problems in service, maintenance and repair applications. A bare tool model (2313-20) is also avail-able without a battery and charger to allow current Milwaukee M12™ users to add to the versatility of their system and get aninspection camera at a tremendous value vs. competitive alkaline units. Powered by revolutionary M12™ RED LITHIUM™ Batterytechnology*, the M-Spector 360™ is the only inspection camera that is compatible with a tool system that offers over 30 products.
