PROLOGUE

Seniors, with a few exceptions, have given the glory

and hard work of publishing this book to their humbler

Juniors and Underclassmen. W e have accepted their chal

lenge. W e hope that, as they peruse this book, they will

appreciate our efforts. To the Seniors of Dwight, the

Scroll wishes them all success and happiness in their fu

ture endeavors. To the school, we pledge our sincere

devotion!

THE WORLD YOU FACE

It is with considerable uncertainty as to the problems

that lie immediately ahead of you that I send this year's

class of seniors and post-graduates on their way to the

colleges or service academies of their choice.

Some of you may have your education interrupted by

a period of military service, but even if you are so for

tunate as to finish your college work without interrup

tion, the world you face will still not have resolved all

of its problems. To look ahead with confidence and self

assurance, each of you will be called upon to have the

courage of a Daniel or David. How well you meet the

problems you will face will depend in large measure

upon the character, self-discipline and determination which

we have tried, at Dwight, to give you in addition to the

completion of your academic work.

I have confidence that you will meet your obligations

with fortimde and determination and that you will make

this world a better place in which to live.

DEDICATION

This year the members of the Dwight Scroll wish to honor a member of the

faculty who has exuded interest, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship. Although we have

not called on him this year, we do remember how willing he was to play the piano

for our assemblies. W e feel that he loves Dwight and us; therefore we are pleased

to wish him a long and happy life with us at Dwight.

Ail hail to you, Mr. Huxry!

—5—

W IN T O N L. MILLER, JR.

Our headmaster is one of the gentlest, kindest, most understanding men a of prep-school age could want to meet. No complaint is too small to warrant full consideration; no whim or fancy is too little to get his cooperation.

All in all, Mr. Miller is a great "guy.”

Jean-Jacques Arling New York University University of Chicago Sorbonne

"Jay,” as we call him, is one of our favorite teachers. His wit and humor baffie us. His profundity and knowledge astound us. One swell guy!

Irving S. Asch University of Minnesota

Mr. Asch is a new member of the English Department. When vociferations from 3A penetrate the air, we know the dumbest of us is bound to be "larnin,” or that the disgruntled are grumbling. He’s our psychologist!

John Drew Colt Yale University

Another new member of the faculty is Mr. Colt. He keps us in tow during our study halls; he coaches us in wrestling, tennis, ping-pong and baseball. W atching him take care of our basketball elite, we’d say he is nursemaid de luxe!

.- '■4

Henry L. Crehan Harvard University

Mr. Crehan is our French teacher and the ringer of the bells. Sometimes he rings the bell so hard, we wonder if it is that our reaction to French hasn’t the ring it should..

Long live the "Doc”!

- 1 0 —

Jerome D. Fischer College of the City of N. Y.

The newest member of our faculty is Mr. Fischer. He teaches us mathematics. He tries to compete with our master story-tellers. At times he' wins!

—11

Theodore Jones University of London

Mr. Jones is tiie epitome of decorum. He conducts his classes astutely assuming that we are students. How we have let him down!

Otis B. Hurry Syracuse University

Mr. Hurry, to whom we have dedicated our book, is a past master at the slide rule. He vibrates enthusiasm in sines and cosines. One great crusader!

*1̂

Robert Liebler New York University

Mr. Liebler is our good basicetball coach. Under his guidance we reached the semifinals in our league. He is a sincere fellow and a good sport!

Charles W. Myron New York University

Mr. Myron is the stickler of the faculty. He believes in his sciences—and in the essential study of our native tongue. He’s all Republican!

—1 S -

William C. Toomey St. John’s University Seton Hall

Mr. Toomey is another new member of our faculty. He teaches history; he directs the speech classes; and he does advise the Forensic League. His quiet humor baffles us!

Doris B. Post Columbia University

Mrs. Post is a gem. She helps us to get our transcripts out; she keeps us on an even keel as far as attendance is concerned. Our own little Dwight F. B. I.!

Helen E. Harms Franklin Institute

Miss Harms is the keeper of the keys, the seller of the books, and the friend of most of us delinquents. Hue we need all Heaven to help us if she is aroused! A great gal— and a very good secretary!

Under the excellent leadership of William Farrell our student council

has met and dealt with the usual problems of school life.

Unfortunately, this body has not solved problems most embarrassing

to all of us.

A challenge:

Why can’t we—the students of Dwight— try to be regular guys?

We are offered many advantages. It is up to us to make constructive

use of them.

Only those of us who have experienced—and survived— the process of issuing a yearbook can tell you what a chore it is.

At first everyone is eager. The dropping-out period comes in; and there remain the few eager beavers who are willing to carry on.

This year the cooperative efforts have reached a low point.

We of the Yearbook Staff are indebted to Mr. Arling—our advisor— to Mr. Putney, to Mrs. Post, and to Miss Harms for their invaluable services and contributions toward making our yearbook a reality.

So, it came out this way, boys. Here it is. W e hope you like it!

We didn’t do much! However, we tried, in our hamble w.ay, to give

the Dwightonian some class. In some small measure, we hope that we have

led a path to bigger and better school newspapers.

Not since the days when Dwight students, such as Michael Driscoll and Glenn Beebe, graced the boards for dear old Dwight have we had as much enthusiasm for the art as we have had this year. W e are proud to be placed among Dwight’s former thespians with our production of "Twelve Angry Men.” To Mr. Putney we owe deep gratitude for his patience and help.

OUR DARK ROOM

Under the surveillance of Laurence Grady, our photography club has

gone places. W e have new and better equipment. W e could almost put

our competitor, "Bloomingdale’s” out of business.

-Anyway, to all of us amateurs, we are thankful to Grady for his

spunk in tricking the lens.

LIBRARY COMMITTEE

During Mr. Murray’s absence Mr. Putney has done an admirable job of keepingthe Ehvight library a really lively part of our school life.

The library has been accessible to us at all times; Mr. Putney has even spentextra time after school to see that we had access to the necsessary books.

His committee—composed of Michael Erdheim, Richard Frank, Larry Darrow, and Stephen Russovi'— has been most helpful to him and to our school.

EPILOGUE

W e of the Class of 1956 wish every good thing to our underclassmen.

We have to thank you for a task we should have undertaken.

However, we must assure you fellow-students that our class has had many andvaried occupations which have done much to prevent us from participating in the school’s Scroll. But chalk up the scores we seniors gave you in basketball; count the times the same seniors met the academic goal.

W e leave Dwight with all affection. W e salute our teachers; we pay our deepest respects to the ladies of our office. We give our headmaster a 21-gun salute!

Boys, keep that royal blue always waving.
