Brahmotsavam By Dr. Narender P. Reddy

Brahmotsavam is a celestial celebration first performed by Lord Brahma to celebrate the appearance (manifestation) day of Lord

Srinivasa. Lord Srinivasa appeared on the Narayana Giri (present Tirumala) on the banks of the Lake Swami Pushkarani, located two

hundred yojanas south of the Ganga river and five yojanas west of the Eastern Sea (Padma Puranam: Kshethra-kaandam, 33:123-

127).

“Gangaayaa dakshine bhaage yojanaam shatha dwaye! Pancha yojana maathre thu poorvambodesthu pachime!”(Two hundred yoja-

nas south of Ganga and five yojanas west of the eastern sea). “Maase Baadrapade Vishnu thithou vishnu samanvithe! Siddayoge

Somavare girou Naryanaahvaye!!” (In the solar month of Badra pada (Sun in Badrapada month or Kanya rasi) on a Monday during

Ekadasi of the first fortnight, Vishnu (Shravana) nakshatram and Siddha yogam, He arrived on Narayana Giri.) “Swami Pushkarani

theere..... (On the banks of Swami Pushkarani....) “Avirbhoova Bagavan Sreenivasaha paraha pumaan! .” (The supreme Godhead

Srinivasa manifested)

Brahma prayed to Lord Srinivasa and Lakshmi Devi to fulfill his desire to perform a Mahotsavam (a great festival):

“Dwajaarohana poorvascha karya thava mahotsava sa cha thvayaa maha bhooman! Angeekarya Shreeya saha.........” (I want to per-

form a great festival for you including flag hoisting. Please give your consent along with Shree Devi... Varaha Puranam 1:50:26). To

this, Lord Srinivasa gave His consent: “…Kriyathaam ithi” (……Go ahead and do it).

Brahma performed a festival along with the Vaikanasa sages starting with a ceremony of hoisting (arohanam) of the flag (dwaja) with

the image of Garuda when the Sun was in Kanya rasi or constellation Virgo. Demigods (devathas) from all directions were invited

(“Aahoothaascha Suraaha sarve, sarvebhyo digbhya evaacha….”). All devathas, pious kings and people from all parts of the world

participated in the festival very enthusiastically. They loudly chanted ‘Govinda, Govinda:’ “….Ghushyanthahasangha sha shoschaih

‘Govindethi’ punaha punaha.” On each day of the nine day festival, Lord Sri Venkateswara, wore precious jewelry and rode several

vahanas (vehicles) in a procession. One day, He rode on a horse which was comparable to the celestial horse Uchchaishravam. Another

day, Lord Srinivasa rode an elephant which was comparable to Iravatham (the celestial elephant which originally appeared from the

milky ocean). Yet another day, Lord Srinivasa rode on the king of serpents, the Adishesaha (the celestial serpent). Another day, He

rode on Garuda the mighty and majestic vehicle of Lord Vishnu. Each day, in this grand procession, the Gandharvas sang melodies

while the Apsaras and devathas danced in ecstasy. Also in the procession were Vandimagadhas singing His glory and scholars chant-

ing appropriate Veda mantras. In fact, all the people sang, played instruments and danced ecstatically glorifying Sri Venkateswara.

One day, Lord Srinivasa along with Sree Devi and Bhu Devi, decorated with precious jewels and diamond studded crowns, rode a gold

chariot adorned with flowers and jewels. Every day, the ascetics performed fire sacrifice (homam). “Utsave darshanam punyam Srini-

vasaschya shaanginaha”: Seeing Srinivasa on these Brahamotsavam festival days is auspicious and provides fulfilment.

“Srinivasotsava dinam punyam papa pranaashanam”: The day of Srinivasa’s festival removes sins and showers blessings. Realizing

this, devotees contributed food, money, housing etc. Lord Srinivasa bestowed His blessing on devathas and humans alike. He was very

pleased with Brahma who performed this festival. The festival concluded with Avibruda snanam, Chakra-snanam and dwaja ava-

rohanam (de-hoisting of the flag).

Since Brahma performed this utsavam, it is called Brahmotsavam. Thereafter, it was performed annually. With passage of time,

Brahmotsavam was performed for Lord Venkateswara in Tiruchanoor (after the dwajarohanam, or flag hoisting, in Tirumala). Sree

Bhagavad Ramanuja Acharya reconstructed the four mada streets around the temple in Tirumala, developed Tirumala town, and

reestablished the performing of the annual Brahmotsavam in Tirumala. Even today, devotees believe that celestials come in the human

form and partake in the Utsavam. Before the vahana seva in the night, Lord Srinivasa (Malayappa Swami) along with consorts Sree

Devi and Bhu Devi are offered unjala seva along with the Sahasra Deepalankarana Seva (glorification with a thousand lamps).

Saint Annamacharya (more than five hundred years ago) composed several songs related to the annual nine-day long Brahmotsavam to

Lord Venkateswara describing various vahanas (vehicles), rathas (carts) etc. and the conclusion of the celebrations with chakra

snanam on Sri Venkateswara Jayanthi. His songs say that demigods and apsaras participate in the festival.

Name number 47, Brahma Krupthotsavaaya, of the Astothara Satha Namavali of Lord Sri Venkateswara and name number 930 of Sri

Venkateswara Sahasra-Namavali (Brahmothsava Mahotsavaaya) refer to the Brahmotsavam.

Lord Sri Venkateswara in Tirumala is taken in a procession in the morning and evening during the nine days on different vahanas

including Shesha vahana, the majestic Garuda vahana, Hanumath vahana, Surya Prabha, Chandara Prabha, Sarava bhoopala, Kal-

pa vriksha, Hamsa and Ashwa vahanas each day with a different decoration. On several of these vahanas, Shree Devi and Bhu Devi

accompany Lord Srinivasa. Noteworthy is the Brahma ratham in front of the procession. It is believed that Brahma sits in this Brah-

ma ratham in an invisible form (Brahma is not supposed to have an archa form in Kali Yugam). Of all the vahanas, Garuda vahana

seva is the most significant and attracts at least 400,000 people.

---

Why Garuda Vahanam is of significant importance? Garuda Alwar is the vehicle for Lord Vishnu (Vishnu means all pervading).

Garuda is an embodiment of the Vedas. Veda means knowledge. Vedas (upanishads) bring Him to us by revealing knowledge of the

ultimate reality. Similarly, Garuda brings Him to us in His manifested form. Garuda has immense strength. Even Indra, the king of

demigods, could not stand in a battle with mighty Garuda and eventually made friendship with him. Garuda is swift and fast. Garuda

is on Venkateswara’s flag. For the Brahmotsavam, Garuda invites the 33 crores of demi-gods.

Saint Annamacharya’s song on Venkateswara Swami mounted on Garuda “Itu Garuduni Neevekkinanu, pata-pata dikkulu bagguna

pagile…… (As you ride Garuda with thunderous sound, the directions are torn apart….)” is a tribute to Garuda’s unmatched strength.

For the Garuda seva during the Brahmotsavam, Sri Malayappa Swami (the utsava deity of Lord Sree Venkateswara) wears special

jewelry including Makarakanti, the Lakshmi haaram (necklace of Goddess Lakshmi), Sree Venkateswara Sahasra Nama Mala, which

all are normally worn by the main deity (moola Vigraham) of Lord Venkateswara in the Garba-Griha. In addition, for this occasion,

Malayappa swami wears the garland previously worn by Goda Devi (Andal) of Sree Villiputtur. Also, He wears the silk garments pre-

sented by the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. Each year on the occasion of Garuda seva, the Hindu Dharmarthasamithi of Chennai

offers nine freshly made umbrellas. Six big and three small umbrellas are worshipped and brought from Chennai by procession on the

foot With all these decorations, Malayappa Swami goes on the holy streets of Tirumala and blesses devotees with His boon-giving

hand. Witnessing the Brahmotsvam fulfils all desires and provides a blissful and a spiritually elevating experience.

Brahmotsavam at the Sree Venkateswara Temple in Richfield: The first Brahamotsavam in our temple is being conducted from

June 12-14, 2015 to celebrate the manifestation of Lord Sree Venkateswara at our temple in Richfield (in this Solar month of Vrisha-

bha). The ceremonies will start with Dwaja-Arohanam, homa twice per day, the majestic Garuda seva, continue through with the glo-

rification of Lord Sri Venkateswara along with Sri Devi ad Bhu Devi with a thousand lamps (Sahasra Deepalankarana Seva) and con-

clude with Thirumanjanam (Abhishekam) with the holy water from the homa kumbas sanctified by the Veda mantras and finally with

Dwaja-Avarohanam (descent of the flag). While dwaja-arohanam signifies welcoming the devathas, the dwaja avarohanam signifies

giving farewell to Brahma and other devathas including the ashta-dikpalas (the rulers of eight directions) and asking them to come-

back soon for the next festival. Everyone is encouraged to witness this divine and auspicious event from dwaja arohanam to

avarohanam. This is a unique opportunity for all of us to participate with excitement, glorify Lord Sree Venkateswara, enjoy

the bliss and be blessed by the Supreme Being.
