Florida Delegation, Southeast U.S./Japan (SEUS/Japan), Florida-Korea Economic Cooperation Committee

(FLOR/KOR) and Florida-China Association (FCA), in partnership with the City of Doral International Business Advisory Board, will jointly hold their next Annual Asian Business Conference/Networking Reception in Miami at the Marriott Doral Golf Resort & Spa this coming September 7.

City of Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez will open the event with welcoming remarks, and Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll has been invited to deliver keynote remarks on the over-all importance of Florida’s business ties with Asia. Three sequential pan-els addressing current business issues and ties with Japan, Korea and China, will feature outstanding speakers with expertise in these areas.

The conference program will include a networking reception, and will be followed by a Japan earthquake/tsunami disaster relief fundraiser dinner from 7:15-9:00 p.m. that will include entertainment, and be emceed by Shannon Hori, the local Miami CBS 4 television news anchor. The Consul General of Japan in Miami plans to par-ticipate in the program as well.

The City of Doral International Business Development Advisory Board is title sponsor of the event. Supporting organizations include: the Beacon Council; the Doral Business Council; Enterprise Florida; the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO); the Korea Trade-Center Miami (KOTRA); Miami-Dade County Office of Economic

Development & International Trade; the Consul General of Japan in Miami; and the World Trade Center Miami. SEUS/Japan, FLOR/KOR and FCA work in partnership with the Florida Governor’s Office, Enterprise Florida and other key economic development organizations and corporations state-wide to promote trade and investment with East Asia’s top three economies of Japan, S. Korea and China.

Registration for the conference and reception is $20. Individual tick-ets for the Japan earthquake/tsunami relief fundraiser dinner will be available for $150.00. The net proceeds from the dinner will be contributed to the Japanese Consulate’s earthquake relief program. Opening a restaurant is like an act of commitment and passion. It helps to have the entrepreneur and restaurant instinct as a family legacy. Being a University of Miami graduate, with a degree in Finance and Marketing, Bok An, owner and restaurateur, found out that he wasn’t the corporate type. In January 20th, 1997 he opened the restaurant “Sakura,” and embarked on a journey that has led to 14 years of running a successful restaurant.

In 2008, the opportunity to expand from being a 70-seating restaurant presented itself. Not only did Bok expand the restaurant to seat 170 patrons, but also re-launch it with a new name… Soowoo Japanese Steakhouse. Soowoo stays on the top of Doral’s restaurant scene by infusing it with fresh ideas, new concepts and changing the menu almost every quarter. He understands that palates and trends change in the culinary world. One thing that differs Soowoo from competitors is the full bar that has a fantastic selection of fi ne single malt scotches. From time to time, Bok invites patrons to attend scotch tasting events at the restaurant. Ideas such as this one are what leads him to have

success during this economic landscape. The restaurant has such a strong following that it is being as successful as before the economic down turn. The lunch patrons enjoy the Express Lunch that focuses on getting you fed, happy and ready to go back to the offi ce in 40 minutes.

Two years ago, Soowoo Japanese Steakhouse became a member of the Doral Business Council (DBC). This avenue of exposure has led others to discover this pearl of a restaurant in the heart of Doral. In 2010, a DBC After Hours was hosted there and the response was positive and energizing. Members enjoyed discovering a new place and re-familiarizing themselves with the new décor and menu. As a member of the DBC he sees the importance of networking and the expansion of word of mouth advertising. The DBC has opened this avenue to a success that he would welcome the opportunity to host another After Hours. One philosophy he has that he infuses to his staff is, “He doesn’t pay their salaries, customers do.” His staff knows and focuses on great customer service.

All this work, but how does Bok An balance his personal life? Did you know he is an avid golfer? With a handicap of 8, his passion for the sport is apparent. Just

look around the restaurant and you will see photos of Bok with the golf elite that come into town to participate in the PGA tour in Doral. When asked about his game and why he plays it, a smile will come to his face. It is his way of refocusing his energy and bringing balance to his life.

Great food, great service, new dishes being offered from time to time, scotch tasting events for the patrons and more… How can you be in the know? Come by have lunch or dinner, say hello to Bok. The food and atmosphere will speak for itself.

The Women’s Alliance Group (WAG), a committee of the Doral Business Council, is celebrating its third year anniversary! Led by its dynamic Chair, Norris Perez of Halo Branded Solutions, and Assistant Chairs Gina Perez of The Club at Doral and Alina Barrios of Victoria & Associates Career Services, the group is comprised of vibrant professional women (and men) from all over South Florida.

The WAG was created to serve as a platform for women to develop relationships that will ensure personal and professional growth; and contribute to the success of the community by channeling resources through local charities in much need of assistance. Each year, the Group hosts a culminating event, the Signature Luncheon, created not only to celebrate women and the organization’s success, but also to partner and promote a charity whose mission touches the hearts of the community.

“We meet the fi rst Friday of each month for breakfast at different venues throughout Doral,” states Chair Norris Perez. They are always looking for motivational speakers to provide valuable information that

members can use and share with the rest of their network. So far this year they have learned from community experts on topics such as “Three Simple Secrets to Better Credit” by Second Chance Credit; update

on the state of the real estate and fi nancial industries by Lourdes Seda Realty, City

The WAG has participated in community events such as Go Red for Women with the American Heart Association, the Relay for Life, and the Doral Corporate Run. They look forward to a partnership with Dade County Public Schools to mentor young women. They will also participate in the American Heart Walk in October, and of course, the Signature Luncheon to benefi t A Safe Haven for Newborns by The Gloria M. Silverio Foundation.

The luncheon will take place on Friday, September 23rd, at Hotel Sofi tel. It will host dignitaries and special guests, including NBC6 Healthcare Reporter Diana Gonzalez as the Mistress of Ceremonies; and renowned author, speaker and Professor Diana Abu-Jabor as the featured Keynote Speaker.

One of the greatest highlights of the event is a silent auction with an impressive assortment of prizes. 100% of the proceeds will benefi t The Foundation. Last year over $7,500 was raised for the Charity. This year’s goal is to raise over $10,000. In addition, the event will feature fantastic networking opportunities, generous sponsors, fabulous cuisine and other great surprises.

The DBC’s Summer Trustee Luncheon was held on Tuesday July 19th at the Headquarters of the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), located right here in Doral. The DBC Trustee Members had the rare opportunity to tour this high-

tech Center which is one of ten unifi ed Combatant Commands (COCOMs) in the Department of Defense. It is responsible for providing contingency planning, operations, and security cooperation for Central and South America, the Caribbean

(except U.S. commonwealths, territories, and possessions), Cuba; as well as for the force protection of U.S. military resources at these locations. SOUTHCOM is also responsible for ensuring the defense of the Panama Canal and canal area.

Under the leadership of a four-star

commander, SOUTHCOM staff is organized into directorates, component commands and military groups that represent SOUTHCOM in the region of Central America, South America & the Caribbean.

SOUTHCOM is a joint command comprised of more than 1,200 military and civilian personnel representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and several other federal agencies. The services provide SOUTHCOM with component commands which, along with our Joint Special Operations component, two Joint Task Forces, one Joint Interagency Task Force, and Security Assistance Offi ces, perform SOUTHCOM missions and security cooperation activities. SOUTHCOM exercises its COCOM authority through the commanders of its components, Joint Task Forces/Joint Interagency Task Force, and Security Assistance Organizations.

When planning topay for college foryour children, I en-

courage you to establish clear goals.First, you need to determine if youwant to have your child’s education bepaid with or without the need for fi-nancial aid. If you do not want yourchild or yourself to be burdened witha loan to have to pay back, then set thegoal of having enough money savedbefore they enter college so that thecollege is paid.

Who should pay for my children’scollege?

As parents we feel motivated or ob-ligated to take on the full responsibilityof paying for our children’s college ed-ucation. The second goal is to establisha clear understanding with your childthat if they want a college educationthey should invest in it by saving for itwith earnings from a job. If they investin their education, your child willvalue it more.

What is an attainable financialgoal?

Harvard cost $52,000 a year for the2009 – 2010 academic year. Saving$208,000 based on current costs is notattainable for most people. The Uni-versity of Florida cost $16,690 a yearfor the 2009 – 2010 academic year.Saving $66,760 based on current costsis more attainable. Florida Interna-tional University total matriculationand fees are $4,580.38 a year for the2009 – 2010 academic year. Saving$19,215.20 is even more affordable. Four Miami Christian School studentswere recently honored by The University ofRochester, a school that recognizes juniorswho excel in various areas with universityawards and the potential to apply for schol-arships as seniors. The MCS end-of-the-year awards ceremony provided an oppor-tunity to recognize and present several stu-dents with the following awards from theUniversity: Kunal Khiyani, Bausch &Lomb Honorary Science Award;; RebeccaNaranjo, Frederick Douglass and Susan B.Anthony Award in Humanities and SocialSciences; Juan Tapia, Xerox Award forInnovation and Information Technology;Victoria Gonzalez,, George EastmanYoung Leaders Award.

Presidential Academic Fitness Awardswere also presented and graduating seniors,based on cumulative grade point averagesof 3.5 (or better) and scoring in the top 15U. S. percentile in math, reading or com-

Working dogs, as preferred by ourmilitary and law enforcement communi-ties, are dogs that possess the drive to fightthrough opposition, and, specifically, arenot easily discouraged in stressful situa-tions such as those experienced during anuncommon confrontation or within astressful environment.

Working dogs are bred for severalgenerations to obtain a proven ability toperform specific tasks that an average dogwould normally be unable to perform.Testing of such skills require vigorouscompetitions to evaluate a dog’s obedi-ence, protection, and tracking/hunt skills.

Drawbacks from anticipated skills arecommon when performance fails. In suchoccurrences, puppies are usually given tofamilies for pets with limited registrationfor breeding rights to avoid creating a doglineage lacking the special drive needed.

An advantage in producing puppieswith strong working drive is gained bytraining the dam (mother of the puppies)for the majority of her 60-day pregnancyperiod. Puppies carried are thus motivatedupon birth to act with confidence, gainedfrom the dam’s strong demeanor.

Kept within earshot of other workingdogs, newborn puppies learn to distinguishdifferences between aggressive behaviorfrom experienced working dogs, such as anon-working dog litter that whines forfood and attention.

Working puppies soon begin to showsigns that convey confidence. Some maystartle upon hearing loud noises or anysound out of the norm. Behavior display-ing investigative instincts is most desire-

able for an owner or breeder of recovery-trained dogs.

Once determined as a workingprospect, a puppy can be raised for severalmonths under a regimen that includessocialization with people and other ani-mals within environments with differentdistractions anticipated during a workingdog’s career. Obstacles or sudden and loudnoises are just two of many elements need-ed to be immediately introduced to a work-ing-bred puppy.

Control takes precedence. Puppies areinitially encouraged with food or treats, tocome, sit, lie down, and stay. During suchtraining, a puppy is encouraged to playwith a rag and can be teased by a handleras if the rag were a fleeing rodent. The ragis hidden to encourage hunting and a hid-den location.

Puppies are raised with these exercis-es for weeks, months, or even years beforetraining is channeled for a specific task.Working dogs are usually channeled to thedesired task at 18 to 24 months with con-tinued training on controls and correctionsfor specific tasks. Certification can takefrom several weeks to several months.

After assignment to a military or lawenforcement agency, training continuesthroughout the dog’s career, placingextraordinary value on these faithful com-panions whose monetary value can exceedthousands of dollars.

The average career length of a work-ing dog varies from 7 to 10 years depend-ing upon the stress load encountered.Working dogs are usually retired between8 to 12 years of age but are most kept bytheir handler who worked alongside theseextra-special canines.
