• Jackie Robinson was one of the most famous players from this time, He played for the Dodgers
• He was the first African American player to play in the MLB
• He had the most stolen bases in the league and was named Most Valuable Player in 1950
Basketball
• In the 1950’s basketball was starting to become a lot more popular
• One of the best players from the 1950’s was Bob Cousy
• He played for the Boston Celtics
Boxing
• In the 1950’s boxing was starting to become a lot less popular
• Many people still enjoyed it though
• One of the best boxers from the era was Joe Louis winning the heavy weight title in 1950
Bowling
• The advent of the automatic pin setting machine made bowling start to pick up mass appeal in the 1950’s
• Bowling shoes were also introduced
• The 1950’s was the big boom for bowling
Tennis• Woman’s tennis was becoming
very popular in the 1950’s
• Althea Gibson is the first black person to win a tennis Grand Slam title in 1956
• Althea becomes the top-ranked women's tennis player with Wimbledon and U.S. Championships under her belt.

Kevlar● Invented by Stephanie Kwolek● Made by spinning fiber from liquid
crystalline solutions● Originally developed to replace steel in
radial tires● Today it is used in a wide variety of things● Mainly used in bullet-proof vests, but also
used in canoes, bike tires, sails, and tank armor
The ATM (Automated Teller Machine)
● Don Wetzel is credited for the invention
● Took 5 million dollars to make● The first machines were off-line so
money wasn't instantly withdrawn from the account
● Only credit card holders with good banking records were allowed an ATM card
● First one began dispensing on Sept. 2nd 1969 only weeks after Armstrong stepped on the moon
● Made it easier for people to get their money rather than stand in lines at the bank
Astroturf● Invented by Donald Elbert, James M, and Robert
Wright● Originally called “Chemgrass”● First major usage was in the Houston Astrodome
stadium● Soon after most of the major sports started
adopting it as their artificial grass● To Most of the old product is obsolete however
they have invented new products based of newer technologies
● this day Astroturf is still used as artificial grass
Lava lamp
● Invented by Edwin Walker in 1963● Nicknamed the Astro lamp● Contained blobs of colored wax in a glass casing● Used for novelty purposes and decorations● These have proven to be dangerous fire hazards
– especially home made ones● In 2004 a man died from heating one over the
stove resulting in an explosion of glass shards and molten liquid
Cochlear implant● Invented by Alessandro Volt● AKA the hearing aid or bionic ear● Helps those with hearing problems● Provides a sense of sound and helps those with
a damaged auditory system● As of 2010 around 220,000 people are still
benefiting from this amazing invention
Bar code scanner● Invented by Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver● First codes weren't rectangular but instead circular● First used in 1966● The first company to start producing bar coding
equipment was the American company monarch marking
● Later evolved into the U.P.C ( Universal product code)● The U.S still uses this today
