This Month’s One To Watch...

Junkbox Jewellery at ‘Just Another Fashion Show’

Colour Chamelion Carrie Anderson, 26, from Wrexham, is the funky owner of Junkbox Jew-ellery. Creating her handmade, one-off pieces with a shop to be opening in Chester within the next year, Junkbox Jewellery is sure to be a big hit. Carrie talks to Danielle Gay about her jour-ney as a struggling up and coming designer, and what the future holds for her unique com-pany.

Meeting Carrie for the first time is an event in itself. After send-ing and recieving numerous texts and emails it is clear Carrie is a busy lady and never in one place for long. I finally catch up with the girl herself at Chester Racecourse where she is set-ting up her stall for the event ‘Just Another Fashion Show’. With her recently dyed red hair and quirky outfit her flair for all things fashion is apparent. Car-rie pulls me to one side, tells me how stressed she is and min-utes later i’m helping her set up her stall as she talks me through her life as an independent

designer for her label Junkbox Jewellery. Fashion has always ran through Carrie’s veins, with her mother owning her own clothing shop in the 80’s. Work-ing full time as Senior Manager for Topshop in Liverpool has given Carrie the inspiration to start her own jewellery line. ‘I saw some of the pieces that Topshop sells (Freedom Jewel-lery) and its all so big and beau-tiful. There was this one neck-lace I really liked but I was skint and had to wait until payday to buy it, but then I had a thought that maybe I could make some-thing similar to it. I went home,

found an old chain and earring and my first piece of jewellery was created’. Carrie has never looked back. Asking family and friends for old unwanted jewellery and scouring char-ity shops has become second nature for the jewellery fanatic. ‘I just love taking unwanted or broken things and giving them a new lease of life, turning them into something new and exciting and beautiful’. It was after Carrie had made several pieces and started giving them to family and friends as gifts that she had the idea to start selling her creations. ‘People suddenly started requesting pieces to be made after seeing me or friends wearing them. I make things that are similar but no two pieces are the same. I found myself making more and more jewellery in my spare time, it started to become more than just a hobby that I enjoyed, it was making me money and so I decided to start running table top sales at craft fairs’. Carrie and best friend Kim, creator of recycled clothing line ‘Beautiful Ugly Clothing’ started to run a stall together at Telfords Vintage

We started to get involved with the fashion shows that run, Just Another Fashion Show’ being the first of many’. Since then Carrie has expanded her busi-ness to the world of social net-working site Facebook, where customers can view photos of pieces for sale, or request a piece to be made. Ranging from necklaces to earrings to braclets, or the more unusal head pieces, body jewellery and the downright bizarre toy jewellery there is something for everyone. Careful thought and craftsmanship goes into every creation and new pieces are posted everyweek, guareented to make heads turn. So what is the next step for Junkbox Jewellery? ‘I didn’t expect it to turn into something so big in all honestly’ Carrie tells me. ‘It was just a hobby, now I practi-cally devote all my free time to it. I’m currently still working at Topshop but i’m saving all my spare pennies to turn Junkbox Jewellery into my fulltime career. Kim and I have plans to open a small shop in Chester soon, the plan is to go into partnership and hopefully have something opened by this time next year. Chester doesn’t have any shops like it, the closest Chester gets to originality is the Vintage Shop’ (situated below the rows on Watergate Street in the Town Centre). With the popularity that Carrie has created so far

the shop looks set to be a success. ‘We’ve already been in talks with an agent to buy somewhere so hopefully things will start falling into place soon. For now though i’m going to keep selling stuff on facebook and start making more products ready for the shop. And with the Chester races soon approach-ing i’ll be blown away with making things. Everybody starts requesting unusual and fancy pieces to wear but I don’t mind. My customers are my best ad-vertisers’. As customers start into poor into the pavillion Carrie excuses herself and becomes full of life, a natural sales wom-an, selling her creations with a smile like a pro.

Trend Reports Just Another Fashion Show

Chester Racecourse played host to the latest installment of ‘Just Another Fashion Show’ at the end of April. The starry affair boasted vintage clothing stalls, Indie bands and a fashion show that show-cased some of Ches-ter’s biggest boutique summer clothing lines. The show is the fifth to be organised by a host of people raising money for different charities. This time round all proceeds went to CLIK Sergant (Cancer Leukemia in Children). With 50 male and female models running around the show took some organising, and generously everything was done for free. MAC makeup artists volenteered their hair and makeup services, clothes were donated and models walked their walk for charity. Host and organiser of the show Lauren Emilio can’t believe the turnout for the show. ‘With around one hundred tickets sold so far, and one hundred more to sell on the door its our biggest turn out yet. So much effort has been put

into organising the show and everyone has chipped in and volenteered their services, all in the name of charity’. Featured-clothing in the show varied from Zara’s summer collection to small designers from Chester’s boutique stores. Pop Boutique, Ally and Kawley all made an appearance on the catwalk. Zara wowed the audience with it’s khaki tailoring and neutral hues, featuring blazers and linen hareem pants mixed with tan accessories. Pop boutique’s summer range included ditzy florals, 50’s style bright romper suits, mixed with coloured heels and retro sunglasses. Kawley showcased lace adorned pon-cho’s, and hippy dippy maxi dresses. Ally brought a touch of sci-fi to the runway with fluores-cent halter tops and distressed denim mixed with faux leather pants and skirts. Kylie Thomp-son, 22, joint organiser of the show, attends Chester Univer-sity and is currently studying in her third year of a fashion

course. ‘I started running the fashion shows as part of my portfolio work for university. Each show I do gets bigger and more glamorous everytime. I set myself challenges and this has been the hardest yet, but there’s so many people helping that it’s turning into a real success. I’m already planning the next big event’. Backstage is where the models and their dressers hang out, try on the clothes and chat about the show. Model Jenni-fer Godwin, 21, said ‘I’ve been involved with some of the past ‘Just Another Fashion Show’ events and they are all amazing and so well organised. This is definately the biggest and best yet. The clothes are so fabu-lous. I love modelling for these events because I get to see and wear the upcoming clothes before anyone else and it’s so worthwhile raising the money for charity. I’m really loving Pop Boutique’s collection. So funky’. The event raised in total £6,532 to go towards a worthwhile charity. ‘I can’t believe how much we raised’ said Kylie. It’s been a lot of hard work, i’ve had numerous sleepless nights over it but I couldn’t be happier with how well it’s all gone’. Trend says well done to all those who took part in ‘Just Another Fash-ion Show’ and look forward to the next event!

Just Another Fashion Show presents its next event in collaboration with Jack Wills Clothing in september 2010.

The Race Is On Trend brings you everything you need to know for dressing for the races

It’s that time of year again, when Chester is full of beautiful ladies and gentleman, scrubbed up to the nines, and in their sunday best. Well not quite. The Chester Races boasts a dress code all of its own, and the competition is on, ladies battling to have the best dress and the ultimate worry, having the same dress as somebody else. Many come sporting unique one-off pieces made by fashion savvy seamstresses. Every year the styles change, the key colour alters and panic ensues those who have no idea to what to wear. So Trend went directly to the shops to do the hard work for you. If you’re shopping on a budget (like most of us this year) don’t panic. The highstreet has been churning out some of its best pieces yet, with atten-tion to detail and the quality being so high, no-one will guess that it’s not designer. Clare Ros-si, Deputy Manager for Topshop in Chester spoke to Trend about what to look for in a highstreet race dress. ‘The key is obvi-ously to go for something that flatters your shape. If it fits well it will instantly look more expen-sive. Key colours to look out for this season are nude. Nude is massive and our nude pieces have been selling like hotcakes. For a less obvious colour, if you like to look more unique try something tribal which still looks classy yet quirky’. Trend sug-gests that when buying a high-street dress for the races

steer clear of the obvious pieces will guarentee you don’t see someone else in the same dress. Emily Davis, buyer for Chester New Look suggests that customers try pieces from their more prestigious labels. ‘We sell some funky designs in New Look from boutique labels which are more limited in quan-tity so they are rarer pieces’. If unique highstreet pieces are more your thing, and you can stretch your budget, then head to French Connection on Bridge Street. French Connection could be described as being half highstreet and half designer boutique, stocking limited num-bers of each piece for exclusiv-ity. French Connection offers many styles and for each style boasts a range of colours to chose from so you are always sure to find something for you. With helpful shop assistants to offer advice you’ll be kitted out with time to spare fpr acces-sory shopping. April Broadgate, Assistant Manager for French Connection says ‘All our staff are willing to help any customer find the right outfit to make your shopping hassle free’. Mov-ing up the budget scale, if you have money to spare then head to one of Chester’s boutique stores. Emma Somerset, Alizari and Tessuti Women stock some of the best designer brands going, ranging from Maxmara to Missoni. All pieces stocked are exclusive with one piece per size, so your dress will be one of a Chester kind. Alice

Thompson, owner and founder of Alizari talks to Trend. ‘We provide unique pieces and at this time have bought stock especially for the races. Most boutiques offer a fitting service with purchase in order to ensure your dress fits like a glove and looks stunning on. This season florals are a massive hit, so I would say to anyone unsure of what to wear that, with flower print you won’t go wrong’. So there you have it ladies, all the advice you need. Team your dress with a smile and you’ll be fit for the executive box.

This month Trend shows you how Start with a clean face and smooth on a light foundation in circular motions, making sure its blended properly around the hair and jawline for flawless coverage. Dot a light-reflecting concealer on any spots or dark patches and undereyes and blend with your finger.

Use a kohl pencil to line the entire eye, starting with the lower lash line and then drawing around the top lashes. To add some glamour add a small Audrey Hepburn-esque flick at the outer corners. Next apply some false lashes for intense but pretty looking eyes. Use a small amount of glue and apply using tweezers for a precise fnish. If you have trouble with glue, buy some preglued eyelashes.

Finally coat your lips in a layer of lipbalm and then slick on a layer of red lip-gloss. For a more intense colour add several layers to build up the colour. Finally for an up to date look, pull long hair into a messy side plait for a funky finish.

All Change For Chester

Primark photo taken from Google Images.

Chester is a city renown for it’s shops. Happy shoppers travel from all areas, even from Liver-pool and Manchester to get in on this shopping action. With a large variety of highstreet shops that inlcude two New Looks, a well stocked Zara and Topshop, upper highstreet shops such as French Connection and Kookai, and a vast range of designer boutiques, Chester boasts the ultimate shopping experience for any shopping lover. Walking around Chester though, the av-erage shopper may well notice the disinct lack of budget shops that can be found in alomst every other city. Famously known Primark has been grow-ing in popularity over recent years, for its on trend but cheap stock, ranging from clothing to sportswear, from accessories to shoes. Closely following in Primark’s budget footsteps are Peacocks,

Internationale and TK Maxx, all of which are absent from Chester’s Highstreet. It is a well known fact that Chester City Council has rejected the application for a Primark to be opened in the city centre as it would ‘downgrade’ the area. But with branches of Primark opening in every available town and city it seems Ches-ter Council have now had a rethink to this idea and have finally jumped on the Primark bandwagon. Why the sudden change of heart? Could it be due to the popularity of budg-et highstreet stores due to the recession? The ever growing number of students residi-ing in Chester? Whatever the reasoning behind it, Chester Council could not have made a better decision. Primark is now seen as an assett to any Highstreet, and in the current climate many average

shoppers cannot afford to splash out on the luxury designs that most of the city’s current shops have to offer. Hopefully Peacocks won’t be long off the opening mark. Primark snobs will soon change their mind after browsing the on trend stock. So all that’s left to say is welcome to Chester, Primark.

Primark opens on the 18th May 2010 on Northgate Street.
