He studied under his father and also with Aimé Millet, Augustin drumont and Jean Thomas. each of the three Moreau brothers, Hippolyte, Marthurin and Auguste, have become renowned

for the quality and the beauty of their figurative work. Auguste himself is particularly known for his Art noveau style figures with his subjects being primarily young maidens sensuously clad in a swirling diaphanous dress and usually decorated with flowers and birds or allegorical and genre scenes incorporating cupids and young children. His style was realistic and graceful, revealing his relation to the other members of the Moreau family. His compositions encapsulate a feeling of innocence whilst incorporating an air of mischievous game. In 1861 Auguste made his debut at the salon where he would exhibit regularly until 1913.

ivorine chapter ring having black Arabic numerals and decorative blued steel hands, the black marble base with scroll sides, fluted half green marble columns to the front, with the glazed front showing the visible pendulum, with the movement sitting above within a round marble casing, with matching marble side pieces, height 49cm.* Biography Vincenti started his workshops before 1823 in Montbeliard, France making the roulant blancs (rough movements) for clockmakers to finish and use. He died in 1834 and the business continued winning a number of awards including the Medaille d’Argent (silver medal) in 1855. Vincenti set up his factory producing roulant blancs in Montbeliard in 1823 but went bankrupt a year later, whereupon the clock manufacturer Roux took on the management. They were awarded a silver medal for their movements at the Paris exhibition of 1824. Vincenti died in 1834.

Interestingly a Philip ezekiel is known to be working in Plymouth dock in the same period.

705Gustav Becker, Germany, a walnut ‘Vienna’ regulator wall clock the eight-day duration, weight driven movement with maintaining power, adjustable pallets to the dead-beat escapement and a wood-rod pendulum with brass bob, striking on a gong, the backplate stamped with the trademark of Gustav Becker, a mark showing the award for the Medaille d’or won at the 1852 silesia Trade exposition and serial number 19639, giving a date of manufacture of circa 1866, the walnut veneered case having turned finials to the top and bottom, with an architectural pediment top, glazed front and sides and corinthian capitals to the fluted trunk pillars, with a burr walnut panel to the backboard and various further panels to the case front, the two-piece white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and decorative blued steel hands, height 130 cm. * Biography Gustav Becker was born in 1819 and trained in both Germany and Austria before operating on his own account in 1850 in Freiburg, silesia, Germany. It was the award of the Gold medal mentioned that set him on his way to being one of the most prolific, and better, makers, of Vienna-style regulator wall clocks. Becker died in 1885 but the company continued making clocks until 1935 when it was taken over by the fast-expanding Junghans clockmaking concern.

706Thomas foster, Tiverton, a mahogany convex dial wall clock the timepiece fusee movement with shaped shoulders and an anchor escapement, the fourteen-inch round convex dial with black Roman numerals, blued steel spade hands and signed Thomas Foster, Tiverton, the mahogany case with a cast brass bezel and moulded surround, diameter 41cm.* Biography Thomas Foster is recorded as working in Fore street, Tiverton as an auctioneer, appraiser and dealer in game, from circa 1820 until at least the 1850’s. He was also an agent for the Universal Life Assurance company. A longcase clock made by Foster is in the Tiverton Museum.

He was married between 1683 and 1706, and worked in White Alley, Holborn.

The movements and clocks made by this firm are often believed to be the among the best produced in Germany at this time.

He both made and maintained clocks for a number of churches in the area including supplying a clock for the tower at castle

cary church for which he was paid £8-0-0. In 1736 it is recorded in the records of Montacute church ‘Mr. cockey For Righting the clock and for the Agreement for the Keeping of in Repair for ye Year £1-4-6’. From 1737 until 1761 cockey was paid £5-0-0 per annum to look after this clock. A number of clocks are recorded by William cockey including a longcase example in the dorset clock Museum at owermoigne.

A William Kent had moved to saffron Walden from Lynton in cambridgeshire by 1753 and died there in 1783, a maker who numbered his clocks.
