Christmas - The Gift Of Giving A Memory

It was in 1995 when the family tradition of giving each other comedy presents first started.

We decided that Christmas was too commercial and that we never knew what presents to buy for each other anyway.

So instead we would just get a funny present to give each other a good laugh.



This prevented us having to go through all the stress and hassle of trying to find presents for family members who we hardly know any more.

Although we didn't realize it at the time, something that originally started out as a bit of a joke on a Christmas when were all hard up for money, would carry on for many years to come.



Each year we have a theme decided the Christmas before.

This gives family members time to find a present and potentially allows people to buy them in the sales if they want.

One year the theme was TV from our childhood, another year it was party fun.



Last year we decided that we would focus on funny photos.

Each member of the family was allocated someone else to take the funniest picture of, so all through the year the family were carrying cameras and trying to take other family members by surprise in humorous situations.

This caused many of the family members to be 'set up ' in a 'you've been framed' moment during various family gatherings … however, because we were all so suspicious these funny 'you've been framed moments didn't really happen.



The best present wasn't actually the funniest picture in the end. It was a photo of my sister cuddling her two lovely daughters.

It was given to my sister in a beautiful frame which was well chosen and matched the photo perfectly.

It really set off the photo as it had the perfect choice of color to blend in with those in the picture, and made a simple shot look really special.



This is in fact the only present from all the years that we have been doing our funny Christmas that is still being used.

It is hanging on the wall in the hallway of my sister’s house and it reminds us of how close we are as a family and the lovely times that we all have had together.

Next year we are all going to buy each other a special themed framed picture to carry on this new and successful family tradition.



We are going to look out for photos from our childhood or some other special theme and give each of the family a lovely reminder of when we were young and life was so much simpler, and when we were all carefree and happy too.

It may have cost more to find the appropriate frame for the photos that we choose, but it will be worth it as it will be a special Christmas gift - a memory that will last.
