IV. SalvationSalvation involves the redemption of the whole man, and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, who by His own blood obtained eternal redemption for the believer. In its broadest sense salvation includes regeneration, justification, sanctification, and glorification. There is no salvation apart from personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord.

The SBC statement on Salvation

Tuesday 12 July 2011

A. Regeneration, or the new birth, is a work of God's grace whereby believers become new creatures in Christ Jesus. It is a change of heart wrought by the Holy Spirit through conviction of sin, to which the sinner responds in repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Repentance and faith are inseparable experiences of grace.Repentance is a genuine turning from sin toward God. Faith is the acceptance of Jesus Christ and commitment of the entire personality to Him as Lord and Saviour.

Tuesday 12 July 2011

B. Justification is God's gracious and full acquittal upon principles of His righteousness of all sinners who repent and believe in Christ. Justification brings the believer unto a relationship of peace and favor with God.

C. Sanctification is the experience, beginning in regeneration, by which the believer is set apart to God's purposes, and is enabled to progress toward moral and spiritual maturity through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in him. Growth in grace should continue throughout the regenerate person's life.

D. Glorification is the culmination of salvation and is the final blessed and abiding state of the redeemed.

Salvation from the power of sin

This applies only to those who have been saved from the guilt and penalty of sin = Christians.Christians do still sin and are inclined towards sinning. The NT shows Gods way of deliverance from sin.It can shock us that we sin (so badly) - and so we need to be sure of God’s provision for deliverance from sin - so that we might live for the glory of God.Not being confident in God and his provision can lead to great insecurity here.

B. The problem of sin in the life of a Christian

Tuesday 12 July 2011

We have 2 natures - one old and sinful, one new and full of divine potential - consider Gal 5:16-17So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.HSp and flesh are in constant battle. The only way to overcome is by walking in the Spirit of God

Tuesday 12 July 2011

Law is used in a number of ways in the Bible;1. 10 Commandments - Ex 31:182. System of government for Israel - commandments, judgments, ordinances - Exodus3. Governing principles of the future messianic kingdom - fulfilling Law and prophets - Matt 5:17-7:294. God’s revealed will for men - Rom 7:22 - For in my inner being I delight in God’s law;

C. Law as a rule of life

Tuesday 12 July 2011

5. Mens rules for their own govt. - Matt 20:156. OT law - a conditional covenant of works - essentially saying the Law (God) is “If you do good, I will bless you”7. Law as a dependence upon the flesh - whatever is done in the flesh in trying to observe the commandments etc.

Tuesday 12 July 2011

For a child of grace the Law is now done away with and has results in a Christians life:Jn 1:16 - Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.Rom 6:14 - For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.Eph 2:14-15 - For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations.Rom 7:1-6, 2 Cor 3:1-18, Gal 3:19-25

D. Grace as a rule of life

Tuesday 12 July 2011

1. Legal principles of the Mosaic law now act as guiding principles for Christian life - lived out in grace2. We are delivered from a covenant of works - accepted and free to live in Christ3. Not living in the power of your own flesh - living in the power of the Spirit4. Grace means unmerited favour - which God instigated in his dealings with Adam - God treats us with mercy not as our actions deserve - this is only possible through all that Jesus did and accomplished for us. Israel accepted the law thinking they could keep it and proved grace to be the only way of being accepted before God

Tuesday 12 July 2011

5. Grace is revealed in 3 ways:a. Salvation by graceb. Safekeeping through gracec. Grace as a rule of life for the saveda. Salvation by graceThere is no other way of salvation - Acts 4:12 - in saving grace God shows his limitless love for the lost whilst meeting his own demands for justice and righteousness through Christ. In this God deals with every sin and obligation for payment, and all human merit - every aspect of human effort is dealt with by God’s grace for those who believe - it has to be a sovereign act of God not in any way dependent upon man.

Tuesday 12 July 2011

b. Grace alone keeps safe those who are saved - God keeps on pouring grace into the lives of those who are saved - Rom 5:2, 1 Pet 5:12 - With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.c. Grace as a rule of life for the saved - God teaches a way of life to those saved through grace so that they might live for his glory. Living in grace means not obeying to gain God’s favour but as a manifestation of the indwelling Spirit based on the principle of faith.

Tuesday 12 July 2011

Suggestions for a way to live in victory include:1. If we observe sufficient rules we will be compelled to live in the glory of God - this depends on the flesh and will fail - Rom 6:142. The Christian can seek and secure eradication of the old nature and thus be free from sin - the objections to this are;a. There is no Scripture to back this upb. The world, the flesh and the devil are our 3 great foes - the other 2 are not eradicated but overcome in the power of the HSp - the same therefore goes for the flesh

E. The only way of victory

Tuesday 12 July 2011

c. No human experience confirms this - and if it were true parents would give birth to sinless children.d. When accepted, what need is there for the ministry of the HSp? Yet we are told to walk in the Spirit, not let sin reign, mortify the flesh, yield to God etc.3. Some believe that just by being saved they can live for the glory of God - Paul shows this as folly in Rom 7:15-8:4 - Rom 7:25 shows deliverance from the power of sin is through not by Christ - Rom 6:1-10 says our fallen nature is dealt with by co-crucifixion/death/burial with Christ and indwelling of HSp.

HMS Victory is a first rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, started in 1759 and launched in 1765, most famous as Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar. She is the oldest naval ship still in commission, and now sits in dry dock in Portsmouth, England as a museum ship.

A Christian is only delivered form the power of sin by the Holy Spirit. Salvation from sin and the penalty of it is from God and received by faith - we then live our life in this action/attitude. Why do we have to live in the power of the Spirit?a. In grace a believer faces an incredible heavenly standard for life - we are now citizens of heaven with a demand to live a suitable lifestyle (superhuman in nature) - this can only be achieved through HSp power.Php 3:20, Eph 5:30 - Eph 4:1-3, 30 - Rom 8:4

F. Victory by the Holy Spirit

Tuesday 12 July 2011

2. The Christian faces satan - therefore he needs to be strong in the Lord - Eph 6:10-12, 1 Jn 4:43. The Christian possesses the old nature which he is ultimately powerless to control - ultimately in haven we will be delivered from all guilt as well as the power of sin.
