Spring is HERE! April 2010

Letter from the EditorAccording to a recent survey (found at www.Equimax.com) the majority of respondents

don't believe the horse industry has begun to improve- and most don't think it will rebound

as quickly as other industries. What do you think? Read more in this month's 'Bit s & Tips'.

Now here's something to consider: Studies have proven that once a recession comes to an end, consumer spending is greater than before it began. Doesn't it make sense then to keep your business name in front of faces and fresh in memory?

If your marketing strategy includes hiding until the slow economy picks up speed, take your head out of the sand! This is not the time to gut your ad budget and hope for the best. Choose the best strategy for your business- this might include web marketing, direct mail, advertising in your local circular or a magazine (like this one). Figure out WHO you are targeting and put your resources into the best tool for reaching your future clients.

CF Equestrian has an updated rate & info sheet. In spite of the economy, TWO ad sizes were DECREASED! Our sixth pg is now $80 and an eighth is only $65. Santa Rosa Stables offerspremiere training andcare in a secure, beautifullocation…By CFE staff writer

Lifelong equestrians Oscar and ZoëHernandez of Santa Rosa Stables alwaysknew they wanted to run their ownstable. The couple have spent theircareers preparing themselves by workingin many different aspects of the horsebusiness. Zoë, age 28 and a native of NewOrleans, began coaching at age 16. “I wasthe only kid in the barn who was horseshowing. When a couple of the other girlsexpressed an interest I began coachingthem and pretty soon I had an entourageof students at the local hunter shows.”During college she managed a boardingand training facility. It was also at thistime that she began working withracehorses which led her to Ocala.“I graduated from Sarah Wilson Collegein 2003 with a double major in EquineBusiness management and EnglishLiterature. As soon as I received mydiploma I packed my things and headedfor Florida.” Once in Ocala Zoë discovereda treasure trove of horses andopportunities. “Each job I got opened thedoors to two or three more. I would starta young horse privately for someone andsoon three neighbors would be asking theoriginal customer if they could have mynumber.” While working as a free lancerider for show horses and racehorses, Zoëalso worked as a demonstration rider for ahunter/jumper sales barn. “It was aunique opportunity to see that part of theindustry from the inside.” Zoë continuesto show hunters and jumpers asopportunity allows. Currently Zoë is thefarm manager for a private breeding farmwhile she and Oscar build their business.Oscar, 34, began his riding career at theage of 3 at the side of his trainer father inhis homeland of Costa Rica. After asuccessful junior career marked by severalnotable accomplishments, includingplacing third in the Samsung InternationalJunior Cup in show jumping, Oscar took abrief break from horses. But it wasn’t long

before his life’s work came calling again. In 2000 Oscar was offered the opportunityto be the head trainer for an Andalusianfarm in Ontario, Canada. While thereOscar was in charge of starting the younghorses, showing the competition horses, and teaching students. “It was a good job.I love dressage but my true calling hasalways been show jumping.”In 2003 Oscar left the Andalusian farmand went to work for a Canadian showjumping stable. During his five year stintwith the operation Oscar wore many hats.He was road manager, head groom, andwas also in charge of starting the youngstock. Eventually the show bug caught upwith Oscar. “There is a lot of securityworking for someone else. But I realizedthat some goals of mine could only beaccomplished by working for myself.”The couple met in 2005 and weremarried in 2007. From the beginningthere was talk of having their own stable.“I have always been the type to work formyself so the idea of running our ownbarn was always the logical next step,”explains Zoë. In 2008 Oscar left theCanadian stable and went to work for anAmerican professional. After one yearthere opportunity came knocking again.“We were offered the opportunity towork with a string of young show horseprospects,” says Oscar. “The timing wasright and Santa Rosa Stables was born.”Oscar and Zoë have a very clear missionin their professional pursuits. “Whether itis a horse or a student we want to offerthem an intimate atmosphere that isconducive for learning and one that is alsofun,” Oscar explains. “We want our clientsto look forward to their lessons becausethey know they are getting the full forceof our attention every time. Along with togoing to horseshows we organize funrides and barbeques so that all of theclients interact and enjoy each other.”Versatility is a cornerstone of theirbusiness model. “We welcome everyoneto our barn. Some of our students areweekend warriors, others are seriouscompetitors. But what they all have incommon is the desire to enjoy theirhorses. We want to foster the fun whilehelping them grow as horsemen.” SantaRosa Stables offers a array of services: fulltraining board, sales consignment, younghorse starting, lessons and lesson horses.“We are a full service facility. One ofthe advantages to being smaller is that wecan cater to each individual customer’sspecific needs. We like the boutique

atmosphere our unique situation allows,”says Zoë.In addition to training and riding, Oscarand Zoë began K-59 Jump Co., -- a jumpmanufacturing business-- in 2009. “It’sbeen great for Oscar,” says Zoë. “It is somuch fun to see his creativity run wild.”It is Oscar’s goal to offer a qualityproduct at an affordable price. Thisbusiness model has proved verysuccessful in the company’s first year.“The business has grown beyond mywildest imagination,” Oscar laughs. K59Jump Co. offers a full line of jumps, boxes,Grand Prix quality round rails, and manyother products. “You can get as crazy asyou want. If you can imagine it, we canbuild it!”The couple are equal partners in allaspects of their business. From trainingthe horses and teaching lessons tobuilding jumps the Hernandez’s sharecommon goals for each other, theirclients, and their businesses. “We wanteveryone to achieve success on their ownlevel. Each person measures successdifferently but our goal is to meet ourclients where they are currently and helpthem get where they want to go next. It isthe same approach we take to workingwith each other,” says Oscar“One of the advantages of working soclosely together is that we have madeourselves interchangeable,” Zoë explains.“We are both able to teach, to train, torun the jump business. Our clients knowthis and I think they enjoy having twoprofessionals available to them.”“It’s always good to have twoperspectives on an idea,” Oscar adds. “Ithink it benefits both the horses and thestudents. Sometimes taking a slightlydifferent approach to a situation helps toclarify or simplify a concept for a studentor a horse. We are looking forward togrowing Santa Rosa Stables. I think wehave a lot to contribute both personallyand professionally to Ocala and thesurrounding area.”

Anyone?)The selection trials are a series of eventsleading up to the selection of riders forthe United States Team that will competeat the 2010 Alltech FEI World EquestrianGames in Lexington, KY, this fall. Trialshave begun here in FL- held at night underthe bright lights of the International Arenaat the Palm Beach InternationalEquestrian Center in Wellington and theannual $200K Gene Mische Invitationalhas qualified as a selection trial that willtake place on Sat. EnduranceCheryl Van DeusenNew Smyrna BeachWe made some progress in the past twomonths, but for every forward hoofprint, there are some sideways ones as well.Gallop of the Greenway was verychallenging in that only 9 of 22 horsescompleted the 100 mile endurance ride, and I was not one of the 9. I retired myhorse after 85 miles because I was notgoing to be able to get a Certificate ofCapability in the required time, choosingto save him for another day. He wassound, just tired of riding alone in thedark, and very hungry. With FEI rules, nocrewing is allowed except at checkpoints, thus my crew would have been unable toprovide any support on the last 15 miles.I considered walking for 15 miles for anopen AERC completion but my goal isWEG. So we are preparing for FITS andthere is a another tentative ridescheduled for the east coast of Florida thesecond week of April. So we still have 3shots for horse qualification as the horseand rider have to be a team and I havetwo horses that have done COC on the100 mile distance, but I still have 3 othersI would like to qualify. The trials are

slated for June so that’s when I need topeak the horses, and this the primarygoal.

Combined DrivingChester WeberOcala(JRPR March 3rd)Chester Weber kicked off his 2010 showseason exactly the way a nationalchampion likes to – by winning the horseteam class at the Sunshine State FEICombined Driving Event at the FloridaHorse Park. Weber purchased Horuslast summer from Dutch driver Hans Heus,in hopes of adding high-end speed anddrivability to the marathon and conesWhile Weber and his team have theirsights set on the 2010 World EquestrianGames in Kentucky in the fall, Weber saidhe has a more pressing goal prior to WEG.“First things first and that is the nationalchampionships at the end of March,”Weber said. “I am working toward winnumber eight. After that we will focus ona WEG strategy and decide if we will do aEuropean tour this summer.”As Weber looks forward to defendinghis national championship title March 24-28 at Live Oak International, he said hishard work is paying off and he feelsconfident. “However, I realize horses keepyou humble,” Weber said. The Sunshine State competition was aWEG qualifier, and marked the secondWEG qualifying win for Weber. “This wasalso the second leg of the Florida TripleCrown,” Weber said. “The first leg was atthe CAI Dade City, which I didn’t competein. The triple crown is made up of threeevents and culminates at Live Oak inOcala.”The Sunsh ine State Combined DrivingEvent took place at The Florida Horse

At this year’s USEF Annual Meeting heldJanuary 13-17, 2010, an important rulechange was approved affecting the use ofnon-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs) in competition horses. Over theyears, ongoing veterinary research hasrevealed that not only is there little or nobenefit to administering more than oneNSAID to a horse for most medicalconcerns, it can actually cause potentiallyharmful, even severe side effects.Motivated by its commitment to thewelfare of the horse, the USEF Board ofDirectors voted to amend its TherapeuticDrug Rule and restrict use to a singleNSAID beginning December 1, 2011. Boththe American Association of EquinePractioners (AAEP) and the AmericanVeterinary Medical Association (AVMA)support the rule change, and USEF joinsother organizations including theAmerican Quarter Horse Association(AQHA) and Equine Canada in making thisimportant rule change. While the presence of two of the sevenapproved and quantitatively restrictedNSAIDs in a horse will still be allowed prior

to December 2011 (with the exception ofthe forbidden combination ofphenylbutazone “Bute,” and flunixinmeglumine [Banamine®]), it is importantto note that new restrictions are in placeconcerning their use. This form will allowthe USEF Equine Drugs and MedicationsProgram to collect valuable data regardingthe use of NSAIDs in competition horses.USEF has developed an education plan toguide management, owners, trainers, andexhibitors through the implementation of

Course Diagrams - More than a pretty picturePam Rush- RMI HUNTER - Course diagrams must be posted at least one-half hour before a scheduled class time. HU120. Each course must have at least eight obstacles (ten for Hunter Classics). HU119.4/HU146.20.Every course must have at least four different types of obstacles (six for Hunter Classics). HU122.3/ HU146.20. Different would be green box and birch boxes, a fence with a white gate, and a fence with a red gate. In most cases, jumps will have wings of at least 24" and at least 12" higher than the obstacle. HU122.3In an "A" section, there must be a minimum of three different courses in the section; and in a "B" section, there must be a minimum of two different courses. HU119.5The diagram must show the obstacles which must be taken and must show the order in which they are to be taken, but otherwise an exhibitor is not bound to follow a compulsory track. HU120.1. Distances between fences must be included on the diagram if the point from base to base is less than 90'. HU120.1 Note the diagram indicates the distance, not the number of strides. The scoring of adding a stride from the "standard" or eliminating a stride is at the discretion of the judge and may be scored as a

minor or major fault. HU135.1If the area of courtesy circle is to be restricted, the line must be indicated on the diagram and a corresponding barrier must be physically located on the course. HU120.2 Passing the mandatory line is grounds for elimination as it becomes part of the judging specifications.EQUITATION - Course diagrams are not specifically addressed by the USEF Equitation rules, but implied. There are certain things that must be reflected on the course diagram.A minimum of six obstacles is required. EQ111 Combinations are to be numbered with a single number and the designation of A and B or A, B and C. EQ111.7 This requirement is often overlooked when equitation classes are held in the same ring as hunter classes. In Open Equitation Classes for riders 12 years of age and older, the course must include at least one change of lead, a combination including an oxer and one third of the obstacles must be oxers. In addition, the course must include three of the following: bending line, narrow jump, roll-back turn, end fence, long approach to a single. EQ111.10 Many medals and special equitation classes have other course requirements which should be clearly marked on the course diagram. For

example, the USEF Pony Medal requires two tests (1-9) be included in the first round of the class. EQ112.10 JUMPER - Course diagrams for jumper classes must be posted at least one-half hour before the scheduled time of the class. JP130.1 The diagram must include the Speed, Time Allowed, length of course, start and finish, and jump-off course (if applicable). The diagram must show the obstacles which must be jumped and the order indicated by number. The course designer may use a solid line between obstacles to indicate a mandatory track. JP 130.2 Deviation from the designated track will result in penalty. "Walking the course" is at management's discretion and it may or may not be available for any particular ourse. JP130.3It is most important that the rider review and learn the course rather than rely on others to relay the track. A picture is worth a thousand words-make time to look at the posted course - it is a piece of art.352-586-1266/352-746-5875www.EquestrianCollegeRecruiter.commike@equestriancollegerecruiter.com
