The importance of building relationships was a thread that kept weaving in and out during the educational sessions at the 2005 NCBVA Annual Convention in Maui, Hawaii. Beginning with cemeterian Bob Gordon who borrowed from Steven R. Covey's best selling motivational book (The 7 Habits of Highly

Effective People) to stress "The 7 Habits of a Highly Effective Vault Dealer." Picking up on the same theme later in the meeting was Cyndi Crother, author of the best seller, Catch! A Fishmonger's Guide to Greatness, who hooked us and reeled us in with a glimpse of the unique business philosophy that made a simple fish market in Seattle, Washington

world famous. More than 100 attend-

ees made the long flight over the Pacific Ocean to the tropical island of Maui for a relaxed, yet highly productive, convention. Dressed in shorts, colorful floral shirts, and sandals they networked, viewed the latest in products and services from suppliers, and gained valuable new business strategies. Most of our suppliers left their heavy expo booths at home, traveling a little lighter with brochures and samples. But one new supplier member was so pleased with the interest

expressed on the first day that he said, "I could pack up and go home now and it would have been well worth it!" But he did not pack up and go home because there was still too much on the agenda to miss.

Bob Gordon, who has owned, managed and operated several large cemeteries/funeral homes is a past president of ICFA and IAC and is President of the Funeral and Memorialization Information Council (FAMIC), of which NCBVA is a member. Build relationships, become a real friend, advised Gordon. Be proactive...help the funeral home sell to the consumer. "Figure out how you can help serve them better so they can serve the consumers," he said. "You think you are in the vault business?" asked Gordon. "No, you're in the business of serving people when they need to served," he said, encouraging manufacturers to think outside the box about night, Sunday and holiday burials and exploring the growing new cultural markets which prefer burials to cremations.

President's Message By Graham MacLeod

Always Keep in Mind The Family We Serve Aloha! We heard that greeting many times during the Annual Convention in Maui, from the first aloha (hello) to the final aloha (goodbye).

Since our installation banquet was outdoors with the beautiful Pacific ocean and mountains as a backdrop and the ocean sounds and breezes as accompaniment, a formal acceptance speech seemed unnecessary. I don't think anyone was paying too much attention to my speech anyway since my grandson, Kody, was doing his best to upstage me. So, I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the installation—too many people to name, but you know who you are. Thank you, again.

An acceptance speech wouldn't be complete without thanking those who helped me get to that podium in Maui. A few years back, Tim and Earl Brutsche asked me to join the NCBVA board of directors. Prior to that, I was content with being a card-carrying member. Instead, for the next year Twill be your president, a job I don't take lightly. I will do my best. I would also like to thank Warren Chandler for his guidance and direction. Thanks also to Wilbert, Doric, Trigard, Eagle and our suppliers for their generous support. Finally, without the support of my family and business, I wouldn't be able to do this job; Thank you Detroit Wilbert employees, Diane, my partner and wife, my children Shannon and Lindsey, my son-in-law, Chris, and that little fellow who kept yelling, "Hi Papa, Hi Papa," my grandson, Kody. Mahalo (thank you)!

Presidents in the Past As I stood at the podium trying to gather my thoughts, I realized that I was standing

where some very important people in the industry had stood before me: individuals like Wilbert Haase, 1943, Wesley Chandler, 1952, Paul Begun, 1959, Earl Brutsche, 1963, Richard Reichle, 1968, William Smith, Jr., 1980 (the person who game me my first job in the vault industry), Warren Chandler 2000. The list goes on and on. I only hope that I do as good a

job as those before me have done. Our industry has come a long way with their leadership, and I plan on making a contribution myself.

When we look at the many changes in the death care industry, we know there is still a need for our burial vaults. There may be more diversification now, but the need is still there. There is, and always will be, someone trying to invent a better mousetrap. But when all is said and done, concrete is still the best form of burial vault. The marketing committee has developed an excellent video and brochure to help you explain this to your customers. Make sure you take some time to look at it on the Web site, www.ncbva.org, and on page 15 of this newsletter.

Recently we revisited the pursuit of ASTM standards. I feel our industry is ready,

Vanishing Estate Tax Eases Final Planning By J. Scott Calkins, Esq. NCBVA Counsel

For the past several years I have been advising the members of NCBVA to plan their respective estates with the help of competent and experienced estate planning attorneys who could not only save them considerable tax liability but also prepare the appropriate documents for the administration and control of their estate.

Then along came a Bush administration that dealt a serious blow to the estate tax by significantly raising the thresholds on the amount that decedents could pass on free of tax. Now the federal estate tax has largely gone away - - at least for the time being. Thank God!

When the applicable exclusion sheltered amounts up to $600,000, many studies indicated that fewer than two percent of decedents' estates were taxable. Under current law, decedents may now bequeath up to $1.5 million free of federal estate tax. Under this new threshold more recent studies indicate that fewer than one percent of decedents' estates are subject to federal estate tax. When the applicable exclusion amount climbs to $3.5 million by the year 2009, only a minuscule percentage of decedents' estates will be subject to federal estate tax.

Attorneys Re-tooling What are some of the implications associated with a significant reduction of the federal estate tax?

First, estate-planning practitioners within the legal profession have watched their practices experience a free-fall. There are fewer sophisticated estate plans that need to be done, and even fewer complicated estate tax returns that require submission. Now you are seeing estate-planning attorneys remarket themselves as "asset protection planners" or "elder attorneys."

Second, those considering initial estate planning or retooling of their existing estate plan, don't have to spend the same time and resources to secure their sought-after tax-advantage outcomes. Indeed Congress delivered the tax payers what their estate tax planning attorneys could not do: tax-free passage of their wealth with no professional fees attached. Who said there was no Santa Claus?

But don't believe that the need for estate planning has come to an end. Several states have beefed up their respective estate taxes, many people have complicated marital agreements or situations, and children sometimes need to have assets placed in trust for their benefit. Thus it is prudent and wise to have your estate planning reevaluated in light of the new tax laws which are constantly changing even as I write this article.

Bruns-Norwalk

Supersizes Bruns-Norwalk Vault Co.

1400 Kingsland Ave. St. Louis, MO

History In 1929, contractor August Bruns, Sr. was looking for ways to survive the Great Depression. He started a burial vault business in the suburbs of St. Louis. A true entrepreneur, August designed an air-sealed vault, as well as his own vault designs and forms. When his son, August Bruns, Jr., returned home from serving in the Army during World War II, he attended mortuary school and eventually began working with his father in the family business.

August Jr. and a brother, Donald E. Bruns, purchased the then-struggling Norwalk Vault Company in 1966. Ed joined the new Bruns-Norwalk Company in 1970 after school. Ed's father retired in 1983, and in 1981, Ed's uncle left the company. Ed and Diane Bruns are the current owners/managers.

Quality & Service

A family business that was started in 1929 as a way to survive the Depression has now grown into its fourthi generation. Much of the company's success over the

years has been the family managers' focus on personal service, and their ability to capitalize on trends in American lifestyles.

For example, the population's expanding girth that can be attributed to fast food living and "supersizing" has presented a challenge to the burial vault industry: the need for oversized burial vaults. Instead of scrambling every time an oversized vault is needed, the owners of Bruns-Norwalk Vault Company of St. Louis decided to expand its stock of oversized vaults.

"We probably have the largest selection of oversized vaults in the country," says Ed Bruns, President. "To be successful in any business, one must address the need that's there. We carry at least 150 oversized vaults in stock in a variety of models at all times, and are happy to provide these vaults to other burial vault companies and funeral homes. We ship quite a few oversized vaults out of state."

Ed says that vaults are available in sizes up to 48-in. wide. The company owns all its oversize molds.

The Cremation Challenge Some burial vault companies are threatened by the growing trend of cremation, but this is another area in which Bruns-Norwalk has chosen to turn into a positive one for the company.

"Years ago, when cremation first started growing in popularity," Ed comments, "it was because of economics. Today, however, people are choosing cremation because that's what they want to do. The economics, in most cases, is not a factor. To give family and friends more of a sense of closure when a loved one dies and is cremated, we are able to work with the funeral homes and do a complete presentation of the cremains at graveside—just like a traditional funeral."

Bruns-Norwalk carries a wide selection of cremation urns, vaults, lower devices and stands. The presentation ceremony includes sealing the vault and lowering it into the

Page 7: Bulletin 2005 April

April 2005 NCBVA BULLETIN 7

burial place. Ed says he's noted an increase in cremation urns and vaults over the past two years, with a tremendous surge in the last

eiNsix months.

A Doric Franchise Bruns-Norwalk is a Doric franchise and produces about 4,000 burial vaults a year at its two plants—one in St. Louis and the other location, Bruns-Doric Vault Company in Cuba, MO, located 80 miles west of St. Louis. The company also distributes Clark metal vaults.

An NCBVA member for many years, Ed is very adamant about the importance of the certification program. "I think Bruns-Norwalk is the only certified plant within an 80-mile radius. Non-certified products many times are not up to standard, and when they come back because of poor quality, it hurts all of us," Ed states.

Ed believes one of the biggest challenges to the industry is to educate the public on the importance of a burial vault. "The burial vault is often a forgotten thing," Ed comments. "We've got to work with funeral directors and cemeteries to make sure our products are emphasized."

Another challenge is finding quality people as employees who will be instrumental in helping retain business. "We don't want to be the

e."%iggest," Ed states. "We just want to be the best." Currently, Bruns-Norwalk has 18 employees in its two locations, many of which have been with the company for a long time and some over 30 years. "Customers appreciate seeing and dealing with people they are familiar with and confident in their work and skills. This gives the customer a high level of trust not only in products, but service as well."

Providing exceptional service is very important to Ed and his wife, Diane. Phone calls to the company are answered personally on a 24-hour-a-day basis. There is no answering service. "When the customer needs us, we're there," says Ed. "My father impressed upon me that image is everything. The tone that's set by the person who answers your phone gives the customer an idea of what your business is like."

Ed also believes in having clean and well-kept buildings, and in 1990 he had the company's entire fleet of trucks painted in a unique green and white. "It's like branding in advertising," Ed says. "When people see a certain color, they will think of your business. Since we did the painting of the trucks, you'd be surprised at the number of people who have called on us because they want to do business with the company that has those green trucks."

Facing the Future Keeping it in the family ensures that quality stays a high priority. The Bruns' only son, Joel, has been working for the company for eight years now. After 35 years in the business, Ed and Diane feel free to take more time away from the plant and are starting to travel more. Naturally, some of their vacations involve combining business

and relaxation, such as attending the NCB VA convention in Hawaii.

The couple has two grandchildren. A recent grandson is the first boy in 50 years on the maternal side of the family, and their 19-month-old granddaughter is the first girl in 50 years on the paternal side. The Bruns have pur-chased some land in the middle of the state and plan to retire there some day.

In the meantime, the company is determined in dealing directly with funeral homes and cemeteries. "We can't limit ourselves to funeral homes," says Ed. "If we ignore the cemeteries, they will produce their own vaults. That brings us back to the issue of non-certified products. Quality and good service must be placed ahead of volume."

This is the philosophy that has guided the company for four generations, through trends such as cremation and "supersizing." It's a philosophy that obviously works.

Mobile Tour Center Hits the Road Batesville Casket company hit the road earlier last month with a rolling showroom. The Honoring Lives Tour Center is designed to cater to busy funeral directors cannot afford time to visit Batesville, Ind. In addition to showing its of caskets and other funeral prod-ucts, The traveling showroom also addresses aspects of the funeral industry such as the increased cost of funerals, demand for caskets for obese people and more people opting for cremation.

The tour center consists of two 53-foot expandable semi-trailer mobile showrooms outfitted with a satellite link and an on board electrical generator. When in its expanded position, the truck features a 1000 square foot interior.

The Honoring Lives tour will travel throughout the south, stop-ping at Batesville Customer Ser-vice Center warehouses and other convenient locations. At each stop, the tour center will spend a mini-mum of two days demonstrating state of the art ideas and programs

to funeral directors and staff from nearby funeral homes. Designed to showcase information in a dynamic, memorable and engaging way, the

tour center focuses on solutions to several challenges facing funeral service today--the dramatic rise in the cost of funeral products, the growth in cremation, and the increase in demand for personalization by families and the need to accommodate the obesity problem in North America

Cyndi Crother, a professor at Cal Poly State University, teaching Quality Control, Product Quality Assurance and Corporate Training in the Industrial Technology Department since 1994, became fascinated with the story behind the fishmongers at Pike Place Fish Market. She spent two weeks every month for a year working with them to understand how they were able to set themselves apart and above and truly become world famous.

Pike Place Fish is known to tourists and locals alike as the place where fish fly through the air once purchased by a customer. Most people think that's the secret to their success. Most people think that's what differentiates Pike Place Fish from the three other fish markets in the same area. But surprise, surprise, says Cindi. It's not about the fish! Pike Place Market transformed itself from being "ordinary" to "extraordinary" by adopting a fairly simple set of goals. Pike Place Fish didn't' become World Famous until after the owner and all the employees decided becoming World Famous was a shared goal. Building relationships was the way to get there and the catch is that ordinary happens and greatness is generated. It is generated by making a commitment to achieve greatness in your own life and by accepting such guiding principles as coaching and acknowledgment that are lacking in many businesses. Once the crew at Pike Place committed to becoming world famous, they accomplished it by being truly great with people through their interactions.

Following the session, attendees went looking for even bigger fish on a whale watcher cruise where the mighty humpback whales and dolphins put on quite a show as the sun set over the mountains on the Pacific and a most unique NCBVA Convention.

New Wirthlin Study Reveals Changing Consumer Trends, Attitudes About Funerals

More than half of all Americans say they are likely or somewhat likely to prearrange their own funeral, burial or cremation within the next five years, according to the latest Wirthin Report.

The survey, "2005 Wirthlin Report, A Study of American Atti-tudes Toward Ritualization and Memorialization" serves as a bench-mark for trends that are important to the future of funeral service. The study is commissioned by the Funeral and Memorialization Information Council, a consortium of nine national cemetery, fu-neral service and related associations throughout the U.S. includ-ing NCB VA.

Nearly everyone (99%) in the target audience of age 40 and older has attended at least one funeral, with African Americans attending more funerals than other Americans, and the level of satisfaction remains very high. According to the study, 87% of Americans would not change anything about their funeral experience.

Report is Fourth in Series The 120-page document offers insights into consumer preferences and experience regarding prearrangement, funeral services, cem-etery property, monument and marker purchases, cremation and more. It is the fourth in a series of reports: previous surveys were released in 1990, 1995, and 1999, revealing the trends and changes in atti-tudes over the 15-year period. Among some of the findings:

Americans seek information on funeral or service arrange-ments from funeral homes and funerals directors more than any other source including the Internet. The level of cemetery property ownership has remained very consistent over time; cemetery ownership is significantly higher for whites. Of Americans who choose cremation, less than a third name price as the primary consideration. Others indicated a prefer-ence for cremation to save land, or because it is perceived as simpler. Americans are interested in funeral homes expanding services beyond those traditionally offered including providing a reception room or hall. Nearly three out of four respondents felt it was better to pre-arrange their own service.

A full copy of the Wirthlin report is now available to NCBVA members from the NCBVA Web site, www.ncbva.org .

FAMIC Members In addition to NCBVA, FAMIC members include the National Fu-neral Directors Association, the American Monument Association, the Cremation Association of North America, The International Cem-etery and Funeral Association, the Casket and Funeral Supply As-sociation, the International Order of the Golden Rule, the Monu-ment Builders of North America and the National Funeral Direc-tors and Morticians Association.

New Mercury Pollution Rules to Raise Cremation Costs in UK Bereaved families will have to pay more to have their loved ones cremated in the United Kingdom since the government has decided to enact new measures to reduce the after of mercury released into the atmosphere by crematoria.

The UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs predicts that, without action, emissions from crematoria could rise by two-thirds by 2020— making them the biggest mercury polluter. Mercury, which accumulates in air and water, can damage the brain, kidneys, nervous system and unborn children.

Crematoria are estimated to be responsible for up to 16% of all UK emissions of mercury — caused by dental fillings. Under the new rules, crematoria must cut mercury emissions by 50% by 2012 through the installation of special equipment. But funeral directors warn crematorium operators will inevitably pass on the increased costs to bereaved relatives.

The crematorium industry is developing a system allowing sites which install the necessary equipment to sell "credits" to others and therefore achieve a 50% reduction in mercury emissions nationwide. Duncan McCallum, secretary of the Federation of British Cremation Authorities, said: "The problem we were facing was that 25% of crematoria in the country could not physically fit this equipment and there was a likelihood they would have to close."
