+MUSEUM OF CHADO
OBJECTIVE:
ARC 201 | LITTLE TOKYO, LA, CA
Design:
WINTER2011| 01BRANDONFEATHERSTONE
Set in a site in Little Tokyo The Museum of Chado will showcase Japanese art and tea utensils. This small museum will also serve as a community center for Japanese cultural events and classes. The property lies between two existing buildings and shares two adjacent walls.
I placed both the temporary and permanent exhibits in one large opaque mass hovering high above the ground. This mass dominates the site and leaves residual void space under and around it. This resultant space is designed to be “heavier” and an integrated part of the ground. To connect this grounded space and the “floating exhibit” I devised a second system of a series of adjacent walls that penetrate the mass. Both the sizes and locations of the walls in this system vary in order to accommodate for smaller or larger galleries and art pieces.

+RINCON FIRE STATIONARC 203 | RINCON, CA
Design a sustainainable fire station located in a low mountain region in Callifornia. The 24/7 facility should accomodate 10 fire fighters, and include a sleeping quarters, living area, storage space, and an appara-tus bay to house 2 trucks. Explore energy efficient stategies through use of materials, water use and building design.
I used a system that allowed for manipulation according to programmatic needs while providing a sustainable form that could solve the inherent sustainability needs. A continuous band from wraps around the solid “mechanical” geometries of the work spaces including the apparatus bay and storage. Sustainable materials included a long sife-span Cor-Ten steel roof, recycled rigid foam insulation, triple low-e glass, and permeable pavement. Implimentation of a bioretention swale, evaporative cooling pond, deciduous trees, orientation, and natural ventilation were also used.
