President Obama has something going for him that few punditsrecognize - he's a Teflon president. Entering the presidentialelection year, the word "scandal" does not mar his presidency.

Yes, there are the "birther" inanities, uproars over "policy czars,"and empty allegations of corruption. But even the Solyndra affairseems to have fizzled without the mainstream press invoking the"s" word on a front page.

This lack of scandal is now drawing attention in Washington. Inhisnew cover storyfor the Washington Monthly, Jonathan Alter

steps back and asks why it is that Obama has turned out to be aTeflon presidentand how, in a tight race, that could help hisreelection. Please join Alter and Think Progress editor Faiz Shakirfor a panel discussion on The Teflon Presidency of Barack

Selin Balci - Interact and Transform

Ryan Hoover - Sculpting with Satellites

    (December 10, 2011 - January 21, 2012)

    Opening Reception

    Saturday, December 10, 7:00-9:00 p.m..

    Hamiltonian Gallery

    1353 U Street NW

    Washington,DC20009

Hamiltonian Gallery is pleased to announce two

concurrent solo exhibitions by Hamiltonian Fellows, Selin

Balci and Ryan Hoover. Although Balci and Hoover

implement distinct artistic practices, both artists present

new works of precisely controlled media, imbued with theirruminations on the structures of interpersonal relationships,

    international affairs, and geography.

    SELIN BALCI- Interact and Transform

Selin Balci applies an acute scientific laboratory practice

to create her current body of works on paper and board.

Balci researches simple microorganisms in the lab and

records the manners in which they interact with one

another, as well as the colors and aesthetics those

interactions produce. Balci then creates an artificial living

environment with limited space and nourishment in a Petri

dish. Based on her research on colors and behavior, the

organisms are selected and placed in the Petri dish.

The simple living organisms are forced to compete and to

dominate a particular area. Eventually, the

microorganisms live in harmony. Balci then literally transfers

the microorganisms to paper or clayboard where shemakes aesthetic decisions about form and color. Selin

Balci's works are beautiful records of the battles and

construction of borders, as well as the treaties between

    entities.

To Balci, these qualities, situations and conflicts echo the

full scope of the human condition. In an artificially

constructed living platform Balci is the impresario and her

performers are hostile, yet fragile microorganisms.

    RYAN HOOVER- Sculpting with Satellites

In his new body of work, Sculpting with Satellites, Ryan

Hoover explores multiple modes of space - from the lived

space of the his neighborhood, to the abstracted spatial

language of GPS, into the Cartesian space of 3D modeling

software, and back out into compositional and physical

    space of drawing and sculpture.

The works in this exhibition include sculptures and drawingson Plexiglas that began as walks through the artist's

neighborhood, in which he tracked his travels via global

positioning. The GPS data was processed through a

computer script written by Hoover that plots this data into

3D modeling software, scaling the points within a

Cartesian cube. This generates a path through space,

where the width is modulated according to the speed at

which Hoover was walking. Ryan Hoover then translated

each digital model into a sculptural rendering by using a

    variety of computer-aided machining techniques.

Also included in this exhibition are sculptures that areselections from the paths, chosen as studies, and created

as physical objects by milling and laminating. Hoover then

continued to work with these pieces in a sculptural

manner, employing an aesthetic sensibility that is also

rooted in a non-linguistic understanding of space,

material, and form. The result is a suite of smooth, white

undulating shapes that twist and change direction.

Hoover's process ebbs and flows between manipulating

his materials with his own hand, and manipulating the

works through an intermediary tool to better understand

    space.

Increasingly, we are surrounded by objects that are

digitally designed and created. Assisted by GPS, we travel

down roads that were also plotted by GPS. Unmanned

aircraft is the focus of Ryan Hoover's initial interest for this

project. Navigated by GPS, drones have become a

powerful force in US foreign policy, and a growing factor in

domestic life. By translating GPS data into a physical

object, Hoover presents the data in a more

    comprehendible, sensorial space.

Please join the crew that put together this project: Lucian Perkins, AlecMacKaye, Lely Constantinople, and Jayme McLellan for a candid casual

discussion on the origin of the work, the inspiration for the writing, the

forthcoming book, and the traveling exhibition that is HARD ART DC 1979.

There's no cost to attend an artist talk and it is the single best way to learn

about the artistic process. Lucian will discuss taking the photos in 1979 when

then an intern at the Washington Post. Alec will discuss being in attendance atthe shows Lucian shot and what the images mean to him now. Lely and Jayme

will discuss putting the work together in a cohesive form and pushing to make

the project happen through years of planning.

HARD ART DC 1979 is a traveling exhibition and forthcoming book ofphotographs by Lucian Perkins with writing by Alec MacKaye and a

contribution by Henry Rollins. The exhibition is curated and edited byphotographer and photo editor Lely Constantinople and Jayme McLellan,

director of Civilian Art Projects, Washington, DC.

In 1979, a soon to erupt punk scene took hold in Washington, DC with the

Bad Brains, Trenchmouth, Teen Idles, the Untouchables, and the Slickee Boys,

among others, at the forefront. Lucian Perkins, later a Pulitzer Prize winningphotojournalist for the Washington Post, was then a 26-year-old intern whophotographed several shows over a pivotal five-month period. Alec MacKaye,

then 14, was at most of the shows and appears in Perkins' photographs.

Years later, in 1995, Lely Constantinople was hired by Perkins to manage his

large photographic collection spanning a twenty-five year career with thePost. While looking through negatives in his basement, she found the punk

images and recognized MacKaye, her then boyfriend (now husband). She

asked to make contact sheets to show him, thinking he might recognizehimself and others, and was surprised by how excited MacKaye was to see theimages.

"Those pictures were the holy grail! Not that many people brought cameras toshows then so I always wondered who he was and what happened to thepictures he took. He was at some of the best shows."

    MacKaye's text offers an

intimate exploration of the moment from two perspectives: that of a fourteen-year-old experiencing music on his own terms for the first time, and a look

again at a movement that fueled an underground generation musically and

philosophically. This examination is not a nostalgic review of glory days gone,

as much as a present conversation about the continuation of a way of thinkingthat still endures.

HARD ART DC 1979 offers a snapshot of "the time before the time" thatpunk rock found firm footing in the U.S., including rare (some never before

seen) photographs by Perkins and vintage show flyers. Through band

performance shots, portraits and raucous crowds, the images capture thecathartic, infectious energy and spirit of the time. These photographs have

never before been published or exhibited as a group.

This exhibition is scheduled to tour to the Good Children Gallery in NewOrleans, LA and Austin, TX for the SXSW Music Festival. More tour dates to

    come.

    Gallery Hours:

    Thursday, Friday and Sunday: 12pm - 4pm

    Saturday: 1pm - 4pm

    About Esther Meena Yi:

(photography, Washington, DC): Studied Fine Art Photography at the Corcoran College of Art + Design. Yihas an interest in working with existing images and exploring the use of black and white darkroom techniquesto create a new image; images which allude to different content and context and that question the status of the

original. The darkroom process she explores, mordanage, consists of a solution that makes the gelatin surface

detach and pliable causing the degraded and veil-like aesthetic.

About Victoria Shaheen: (ceramics; Washington, DC): A recent graduate of the Corcoran College

of Art + Design, Shaheen is currently pursuing an MA in Ceramics at the prestigious Cranbrook

Academy of Art. Shaheen's accomplishments include the

2011 Fine Art Faculty Award for Recognition of Excellence in the Study of Fine Art and

the 2011 Anne and Ronald Abramson Award for Excellence in Ceramics. Her piece on exhibition White Light,

White Heat, constructed in stark white porcelain that transforms the light is in deliberate contrast to the classic

architecture of the Anthenaeum.New ceramic installation work by Victoria Shaheen will be on display at MFA's spring 2012 *a pop-up project, DC

NOW, which will take place in Bethesda this April.

Amy Morton, Curator's Notes: As an advocate for emerging artists, I feel that it is vital to highlight and reward

exceptional talent coming out of our nationally renowned art schools. In this case, the artwork of both Victoria

Shaheen and Esther Yi piqued my interest last spring when I viewed Next at the Corcoran, the senior thesisexhibition for the Corcoran College of Art + Design. Primary to MFA's mission of promoting national talent is a

strong bent toward launching regional talent into the national arena through various innovative art projects in the

area. Into the Lightis a striking display of artistic mediums, featuring an oversize ceramic installation piece

compromised of life-size light bulb clusters which cast shadows as well as a series of photographs that appropriate

classical fine art images with unexpected scale, surface and technique. An emerging artist show of this caliber

offers an exciting opportunity for collectors to view and acquire work ahead of the curve by these two exceptional

    young artists.

    About The Anthenaeum:

The Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in all

forms of art, and to establishing programs that will enrich the cultural life of Northern Virginia

and the surrounding metropolitan area. As the primary site for these activities, the NVFAA

owns and maintains the historic building called the Athenaeum. NVFAA programs are open

    to the public and include:

Art exhibits, lectures, and demonstrations featuring local and regional artists

    Performing arts events

Ballet, yoga, and computer classes, as well as other educational programs

The NVFAA is partially supported by funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the NationalEndowment for the Arts, and the Alexandria Commission for the Arts.

solo: Sharif Sehnaoui, acoustic guitar , from Beirut Lebanon

duo: Jack Wright, alto and soprano saxophones from Easton PA

and Rich O'Meara, marimba, from DC

Sharif Sehnaoui plays both electric and acoustic guitars, sometimes with

extended and prepared techniques, focusing on expanding the intrinsic

possibilities of these instruments without the use of effects or electronics. He

now resides in Beirut, his hometown, after more than a decade in Paris. He

actively contributed to the emergence of an unprecedented, experimental

music scene. Along with Mazen Kerbaj, he created Irtijal (irtijal.org) in 2000,

an annual, international festival that is currently the only improvised and new

music festival in the Arab world. Sharif is on a US tour thanks to the New

Museum in NY, where he will play a solo concert Dec. 15

After an academic career and political activism, since the late 70s Jack Wright

has been directing his energies into playing improvised music on the

saxophone. Through years of touring in Europe and North America he came to

be regarded as the "Johnny Appleseed of Improvised Music", inspiring

countless others, and widely recognized as an original and virtuosic

saxophonist. As one reviewer said, he is an "undergrounder by design", but

another reviewer from the Washington Post said, "In the rarefied, underground

world of experimental free improvisation, saxophonist Jack Wright is king".www.springgardenmusic.com

Without question, the most profound domestic change in America over the past century has been the vast

expansion of government under the progressive worldview. Defining itself in opposition to once-dominant

classical liberal theories that stressed the roles of private property, individual liberty, and limited government,

progressivism received its highest expression during Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, yet its influence

continues to dominate our politics today. The signs are clear, however, that government is creaking under the

enormous weight of this expansion. In his new book, Richard Epstein argues that our overregulated stateallows too much discretion on the part of regulators, which results in arbitrary, unfair decisions, rent-seeking,

and other abuses. Please join us for what promises to be an illuminating exchange of ideas about our current

    state of affairs.

During the fall 2011 CityVision semester, twenty-five students from Browne Education Campus and TakomaEducation Campus learned about urban design, and explored the city. In collaboration with volunteers from the

DC Office of Planning and the DC metro area, the students investigated and analyzed underused areas inColumbia Heights, NoMa, and the Navy Yard. They will present their plans for filling vacant lots of land to

    create denser, more vibrant communities.

CityVision instills in students that they can change the world around them and enact positive change in theirlives and the lives of others through good design. As students explore neighborhoods, brainstorm solutions and

accomplish projects together, they learn the importance of teamwork, problem solving, and advocacy skills.

CityVision is supported by American Architectural Foundation; Bloomberg; the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, an agency supported in part by the
