In Elevator to the Moon: Retro-Future Visions of Space , 15 contemporary artists draw inspiration from 20thcentury predictions to create work that celebrates beautifully flawed ideas and inspires new visions for thefuture of space travel.

Ask any economist or weatherman and they will agree, predicting the future is hard, and they arent evenprognosticating about the distant future! From flying cars to meals-in-a-pill, there are numerous excitingconcepts that never made it off the drawing board. The greatest, and perhaps most wacky, disparities betweenfuture predictions and contemporary realities is in the realm of space travel. Why is my home not equipped witha transporter pad? Vacations on the moon were supposed to be commonplace by now! Grandma should bespending her golden years on Mars, instead of Florida.

From the comfort of our 21st century lives, we can smugly point out where 20th century predictions went awry. The communicator that Spock uses only makes calls to the Enterprise, while the cell phone in your pocketmakes calls, texts, plays music, surfs the web and addicts you to Angry Birds. But without imagining Spockscommunicator, would your superior 21st century self even have a cell phone? Even if it turned out completelydifferent than planned, the dreams of scientists, engineers and artists have shaped our future.

Artists include Chris Bishop, Scott Brooks, Jared Davis, Dana Ellyn, Elstabo, Todd Gardner, Linas Garsys,Sherill Anne Gross, Emily Greene Liddle, Rob Lindsay, Chris Rackley, Matt Sesow, Scott Speck, Steve Strawnand Andrew Wodzianski.

The Atlanta and Chicago housing authorities used federal HOPE VI grants to undertake ambitious plans todemolish their worst public housing developments and replace them with mixed-income communities. Inthe process, they relocated thousands of households to new neighborhoods.

The relocation has generated a variety of concerns, with affordable-housing advocates focused on howformer public housing residents have fared and some local politicians and press accounts questioningwhether relocated families have brought crime and disorder to their new communities. The Urban Instituteand Emory University are releasing a study exploring the relationship between public housingtransformation and crime. Panelists will discuss the findings, relocation strategies, and public safety.

Is food about class or identity? Are we as individuals totally responsible for our eatinghabits? Do our individual preferences influence others?

Bread and Butter Guest Curator Carolina Mayorga finds herself constantly revisiting thetopic of food: "My ongoing interest in the theme has been influenced by personalexperience and by writers who examine food culturally, geographically; as a product andas a commodity. For this exhibition, I chose a group of young artists that look at the issuefrom different perspectives: food choices and lifestyles, the advertisement of food products, human relationships around the dining table, and a look at the production of the bites weplace in our mouths."

Bread and Butter featured artists Chanan Delivuk, Sara Pomerance, KariScott, and Shannon Young present their interpretations on the subject, challenge norms, question radical views, bring their experiences and perspectives to the table, and present

the audience with their course of choice.

After the U.S. overthrew Guatemala's first democratically elected president in 1954, it sparkeddecades of civil war and resulted in over 200,000 deaths. Peace accords were signed in 1996, but violence andinsecurity remain a huge problem. Michelle Peterson-Albandoz is driven by a desire to shine light on the destructive

relationship humans and technology have on nature as well as an aesthetic need to make

pretty what others deem unfit. She scours her neighborhood of Andersonville in Chicago,

Illinois searching for discarded wood, often rubble from renovations of decades old row

houses. One mans trash is Michelles treasure, as the scraps transform into the reclaimed

wood and mixed media pieces for which she has become known.

Michelles strong ties to the natural world were born of her childhood spent surrounded by

the rain forests of Puerto Rico and the woods of Connecticut. It was in these forests where

she became hyper aware of the effects humans and technology have on these delicate

ecosystems. After moving to Chicago, Peterson-Albandoz was surrounded by the ever-

changing urban landscape, full of both construction and destruction. Her emotional

Can social networks save biodiversity? Social-networks, smart phones, and internet mapping technology are fueling a citizen-science Renaissance. These technologies are breaking down barriers to entry, providingnew tools to engage and educate participants, and tackling data verification questions -challenges that have long hampered traditional citizen-science efforts. With speciesgoing extinct 1,000 times faster than normal, the potential for this new breed of citizen-science to provide urgently needed information on where plants and animals persist andwhere they are disappearing is becoming increasingly apparent. Citizen-science maywell be the most effective way to scale the biodiversity monitoring infrastructure criticallyneeded to meet the challenges posed by ongoing climate and land-use change.iNaturalist.org, a social-network for sharing wildlife sightings, exemplifies many of theways through which internet technology is reshaping citizen- cience. Throughinternational partnerships and collaborations, iNaturalist has rapidly grown into amovement of thousands of naturalists from around the world sharing tens of thousandsof vetted, geo-referenced photographs of wildlife sightings with the science andconservation communities. The stories of iNaturalist and related initiatives reveal currentstate of the rapidly changing citizen-science landscape.

About the Speaker Scott Loarie is a research fellow at the Carnegie Institution for Science at StanfordUniversity. His research focuses on how land-use and climate change impact biodiversityacross ecosystems ranging from the savannas of Africa and the Brazilian Amazon to theCalifornia Floristic Province. Scott has a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from DukeUniversity and has published numerous scientific articles in journals such as Nature andthe Proceedings of the Academy of Science. As co-director of iNaturalist.org, Scott isextremely interested in the capability for new technologies to scale science andconservation efforts to meet the challenges posed by climate and land-use change.

    About the Exhibit

Julia Latein- Kimmigs newest series is dedi cated to developing and discovering the

    triangle.

Her work usually avoids what in her eyes seems a dislikeable shape and the artist doesnot hide her aversion of sharp, pointy edges, which steer artist and viewer alike in a

predestined direction rather than allowing a less obvious, unintentional approach on how

to read her paintings. Therefore, the triangle is routinely given the boot and makes way

    for Julias likeables.

Starting her paintings with a variety of loose sketches rather than chasing the geometric

shape head on makes it possible to free herself and go in search of hidden treasure,

intended to be subtle and at times not easily discovered amongst structures favored by

    the artist.

In her new series, the artist goes on a quest to conquer the unfamiliar, self imposing

certain restrictions, challenging her least favorite shape in order to break out of her usual

routine and explore new possibilities and discoveries on the way, eventually Befriending

the Triangle in the process, which turns out to be not such an unwelcome shape after all.
