    Capital Science Evening

    Atom Manipulation: New Perspectives in

    Nanoscience

    by Dr. Donald Eigler

    Wednesday, November 30, 6:45 p.m.

Winner of the 2010 Kavli Prize in Nanoscience,

Dr. Eigler was honored for the development of

atom manipulation and for the elucidation of

    quantum phenomena with precisely controlled

    atomic and molecular arrangements on

    surfaces.

In 1959 Richard Feynman discussed a "great

future" in which "we can arrange the atoms the

way we want." In 1989, Feynman's "great

future" was ushered in with the discovery of

ways to manipulate individual atoms using a

scanning tunneling microscope. Dr. Eigler was

the first person ever to move and control a

single atom. He will review the basics of

    scanning tunneling microscopy and describe

how to extend its capabilities to include the

    construction of atomically precise structures

through the manipulation of individual atoms.

Co-hosted by the Carnegie Institution for Science with the Royal

Norwegian Embassy, the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters,

    and the Kavli Foundation.

On November 30th each year, the world's 300 million Orthodox Christians the worlds second largest

Church - venerate Saint Andrew, or as he is commonly known in the Orthodox world, Apostolos

Andreas. Saint Andrew, the first called apostle, is the Patron Saint of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Seventeen centuries ago, Saint Andrew laid the foundations for the establishment of the Ecumenical

Patriarchate in the ancient Anatolian City of Byzas, which later became the Byzantine capital

Constantinople, and which is now modern day Istanbul, Turkey. Over the last one hundred years, the

Ecumenical Patriarchate - the Center of the Orthodox Christian Church - has struggled for survival

against state-sanctioned abuse and discrimination. Upon the occasion of the annual tribute to Saint

Andrew, it is appropriate to step back and assess what progress is being made towards restoring the

full dignity of religious freedom to the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

substantial room for improvement," said Dr. Katherine Watkins, lead author of the study. "With some changes, the VA could provide even better and more cost-effective care for the nation's veterans."

Watkins will discuss the study's specific recommendations to improve the effectiveness of VA mental health

    and substance use services.

Watkins will also discuss how VA's quality measures up to that of private-sector care and how VA care varies

for veterans across different regions of the United States and for different diagnoses.

The RAND study, which included over 800,000 veterans, is the first comprehensive look at the full spectrumof clinical services provided to veterans with mental health issues, from assessment and treatment to chronic

    care management.

    Lens. Paper? Canvas!

    Photography by Sarah Alexander

Wed., November 30 through Sun., December 30

    Opening Reception

    Friday, December 2, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

    About the Exhibit

Photography is an interesting medium. From its inception, the world was captivated. But the

photograph was viewed as a functional item--a record of people and the surrounding world.

While the skills and talent involved in producing a sculpture or painting were revered by the

public, few saw any artistic value in the photographically recorded image. For years

photographers fought for the photographic image to be accepted as a true fine art form.

Eventually it was. Composition and technique were considered the cornerstones of the medium

and the unique aesthetic formed by mastering those concepts sent apart the artist from theamateur.

Today, the photograph has become probably one of the most ubiquitous items in the world.

Unfortunately, it is exactly that pervasiveness that may lead to the end of the photographic art

form as we know it today.

With the advent of the digital camera, its reasonable cost, and its amazing ability to almost all of

the work for the photographer, it seems that, once again, fewer and fewer people appreciate the

  • 8/3/2019 bMichael Events This Week 30 November 2011

    22/56

artistry and skill involved in taking a beautiful or compelling photograph. Sculpture and painting

are still held in awe, with the audience readily acknowledging the existence of a special talent to

produce such works. But these days, according to the digital camera manufacturers, if you let

the camera do the work for you, anyone can produce something worthy of the wall space.

So what does that means for the future of the photograph? That remains to be seen. Perhaps,

like the societies that are documented, the future of the photograph is to constantly morph; to

find more mediums on which to present itself until those, too, become mainstream and the

medium is forced to evolve again.

This show strikes out on that trail and examines what happens when the photograph is

presented in a different format - when it is combined with one of the staples of the fine art

world-the canvas. What happens when the photograph meets the canvas? Does it look like a

photograph or does it more resemble painting? Is it more interesting than the traditional imageon paper? Is it more valued as an art form? Come and see.

    Family Ties

    Gajokeui tansaeng

    Friday, December 2, 6:30 p.m.

In this critically acclaimed 2006 film, an ensemble cast of

dysfunctional characters are drawn together into an

unconventional family, with equal parts amusement and

drama as personal interests and traditional familial

obligations collide. In the first of three seemingly separate

    family portraits, restaurant-owner Mi-ra (Moon So-ri,

) must accommodate the return of her delinquent

brother, now married to a much older woman with her own

step daughter in tow. In the second, Sun-kyung (Gong Hyo-jin,) must care for her young half-brother when their

mother no longer can. In the third, the two imperfect

families become intertwined, hence the film's Korean title,

    29/56

    Saturday, December 3, 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Cross MacKenzie Gallery is pleased to present "The Winter Series", new oil paintings and works onpaper by Washingtonian artist, Tati Kaupp. This is Kaupp's second exhibition at Cross MacKenzieand the first in our new location on R Street.

Exuberance is the word that immediately comes to mind when describing Tati Kaupp's vibrantpaintings. In her earlier work, the intense color palette reflected the light from her childhood years inMexico and the southwest, but even in these new darker paintings, aptly titled "The Winter Series",the work looks celebratory. There is a sense of lightness and air here; circles, floating shapes, dotsand squiggles rise to the top of her canvases with explosive effervescence. The champagneglasses she included in her "Wedding Series" from 2007 are gone but not the bubbles. Theseabstract canvases full of harmonious blocks of strong color are anchored by her use of richcharcoal grays, midnight blues and deep blacks. The paintings are layered with patterns whichdance and move across the surface, almost bursting beyond the edge of the canvas, sometimesliterally crossing onto another canvas to create a diptych. One feels energized and excited by thefresh paint this artist delivers. Let's toast the season with her canvases.

The show runs through January 5, 2012.

Our nations youngest adults are at an historic disadvantage dueto a generation of policy shifts away from the commitments thatonce built Americas strong middle class. Today's 20-somethingsare the first Americans to face downward economic mobilitycompared to their parents' generation. Most young people todayearn lower wages than their parents, yet pay more for education, health care, child care, and housing. In short, it has becomesignificantly more difficult to work or educate ones way into themiddle class.

A new report entitled "The State of Young America," provides a

A decade after the 9/11 attacks, this groundbreaking book by a preeminent reporter takes readers deep into the

struggle within the Muslim world where a growing movement defies and challenges extremism and repudiates

Osama bin Laden, his deviant doctrine, and his violent disciples.

Robin Wright, an acclaimed foreign correspondent and television commentator, has witnessed the angry birth, violent rise, and globalization of Islamic militancy for almost four decades. In her recent reporting, she

discovers a stunning new trend spreading within the Muslim worldthe rejection of Islamic extremists. This is

a historic evolution, slow to take off but now reaching critical mass. This trend is increasingly visible as clericspublicly repudiate Osama bin Laden, Muslim comedians ridicule militancy altogether, young Muslims rap

against guns and bombs, women scholars launch liberation movements using the Koran, Pakistani villagers

resist Taliban intrusions, and former Egyptian jihadis debate and then denounce violence.

This newjihad has various goals. For some Muslims, its about reforming the faith. For others, its about

reforming political systems. For all, it is about achieving basic rightson their own terms, not Western ones. What is at its heart is the rejection of venomous ideologies, suicide bombs, plane hijackings, hostage-takings,

    and mass violence.

    Please RSVP at:http://smartglobalhealth.org/Cooperation

Please join the CSIS Global Health Policy Center for a half-day seminar focused on the activities, practices,

and strategies that characterize the global health outreach of Brazil, China, India, Russia and South Africa, or

    the BRICS.

Since the term BRIC was coined in 2001 to describe the dynamic economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China,

the BRIC governments have become increasingly influential within the global health arena. Whether working

bilaterally, as members of the BRICS alliance, (which incorporated South Africa in 2011), or in other

configurations, such as IBSA or BASIC, these governments are using their wealth and status to influence the

outcome of global health policy discussions and to support overseas health activities.

Over the past year, CSIS has worked with locally-based research centers in each of the BRICS to support

shared research, facilitate discussion, and disseminate policy analysis to encourage greater understanding ofthe ways in which approaches to global health policy and cooperation are changing. Building on the outcomes

of workshops held in Beijing, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro, and Johannesburg, the December 6 seminar will feature

expert panelists whose presentations will highlight how each nation conceptualizes its current and future health

outreach; identify new and evolving trends with respect to regional, South-South, and trilateral health

cooperation; and articulate an agenda for future discussion and research.

Greenhouse Gas Regulation for Power Plants

    under the Clean Air Act

    An RFF First Wednesday Seminar

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) may soon propose Clean Air Act rules

regulating the largest class of greenhouse gas emitters: coal-fired power plants. With

climate policy off the congressional agenda, these and other rules under the act have takencenter stage in the formulation of U.S. policy for limiting carbon emissions. But what will

the rules for coal plants look like? Will they include market-based mechanisms? How

expensive will they be, and on whom will those costs fall most heavily? How will they

work with existing state-level programs like those in California and the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic? These questions have been the focus of research at RFF and elsewhere over the

past year that has aimed to both understand what EPA may do and provide input into the

    agency's decisionmaking process.

On December 7th, an RFF First Wednesday seminar will present some of the results of this

research, along with a broader discussion of the Clean Air Act as a pathway for climate

policy. RFF's Nathan Richardson will put EPA's agenda into legal and policy context.Joshua Linn will discuss the results of new economic modeling that shows the costs and

magnitude of possible emissions reductions and the cost savings of a flexible approach.

And Art Fraas and Dallas Burtraw will discuss practical design of a flexible compliance

program. A panel discussion will follow including invited speakers William L. Wehrum, partner at Hunton and Williams, LLP, and Brian McLean, former director of EPA's Office

    of Atmospheric Programs.

    Which Way Forward for Egypt?

Egypt's first parliamentary elections since the

ouster of Hosni Mubarak began on November

28th. The vote for the People's Assembly will

stretch over six weeks into January 2012.

An outpouring of enthusiastic voters has for

and deepening political and social polarization,

it appears that Egypt's transition will be longand rocky.

    About Esther Meena Yi:

(photography, Washington, DC): Studied Fine Art Photography at the Corcoran College of Art + Design. Yihas an interest in working with existing images and exploring the use of black and white darkroom techniquesto create a new image; images which allude to different content and context and that question the status of the

original. The darkroom process she explores, mordanage, consists of a solution that makes the gelatin surface

detach and pliable causing the degraded and veil-like aesthetic.

About Victoria Shaheen: (ceramics; Washington, DC): A recent graduate of the Corcoran Collegeof Art + Design, Shaheen is currently pursuing an MA in Ceramics at the prestigious Cranbrook

Academy of Art. Shaheen's accomplishments include the

2011 Fine Art Faculty Award for Recognition of Excellence in the Study of Fine Art and

the 2011 Anne and Ronald Abramson Award for Excellence in Ceramics. Her piece on exhibition White Light,White Heat, constructed in stark white porcelain that transforms the light is in deliberate contrast to the classic

architecture of the Anthenaeum.New ceramic installation work by Victoria Shaheen will be on display at MFA's spring 2012 *a pop-up project, DC

NOW, which will take place in Bethesda this April.

Amy Morton, Curator's Notes: As an advocate for emerging artists, I feel that it is vital to highlight and reward

exceptional talent coming out of our nationally renowned art schools. In this case, the artwork of both Victoria

Shaheen and Esther Yi piqued my interest last spring when I viewed Next at the Corcoran, the senior thesis

exhibition for the Corcoran College of Art + Design. Primary to MFA's mission of promoting national talent is a

strong bent toward launching regional talent into the national arena through various innovative art projects in the

area. Into the Lightis a striking display of artistic mediums, featuring an oversize ceramic installation piece

compromised of life-size light bulb clusters which cast shadows as well as a series of photographs that appropriate

classical fine art images with unexpected scale, surface and technique. An emerging artist show of this caliber

offers an exciting opportunity for collectors to view and acquire work ahead of the curve by these two exceptional

    young artists.

    About The Anthenaeum:

The Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in all

forms of art, and to establishing programs that will enrich the cultural life of Northern Virginia

and the surrounding metropolitan area. As the primary site for these activities, the NVFAA

owns and maintains the historic building called the Athenaeum. NVFAA programs are open

    to the public and include:

Art exhibits, lectures, and demonstrations featuring local and regional artists

    Performing arts events

Ballet, yoga, and computer classes, as well as other educational programs

The NVFAA is partially supported by funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the National

Endowment for the Arts, and the Alexandria Commission for the Arts.

Christmas Musical: "The Very First Snow"

World premiere. Original music composed by Dimitar Naumoff as part of the Music with the Angels concert series

and performed by talented children and adults. A seasonal treat for the whole family.

Commentator: Gregg Brazinsky, Associate Professor of History and International Affairs, GW

Congress passed the United States-Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) on October 12, 2011. The United States

and the Republic of Korea had signed the KORUS FTA in June 2007. In December 2010, the U.S. and Korea concluded

new agreements, reflected in letters signed in February 2011 that provided new market access and leveled the playing

field for U.S. auto manufacturers and workers. The agreement is the United States' most commercially significant free

trade agreement in more than 16 years.
