Is Liberty Losing Ground in America?

    featuring

    Winner of the Pulitzer Prize

Author, The Rights of the People(Knopf, 2011)

    and

    moderated by

    Tim Lynch

Director, Project on Criminal Justice, Cato Institute

America is widely known as the land of the free, but is it also true that liberty has been yielding

ground to government power? Two recent books maintain that civil liberties have dramatically

eroded here in recent years. ACLU president Susan Herman argues that our constitutional

system of checks and balances is breaking down because of exaggerated claims of

presidential power in our war against al Qaeda terrorists. That shift in power has made it

difficult for the courts to fully examine whether certain policies are constitutional. Pulitzer Prize-

winning author David Shipler does not dispute the erosion of liberty since the 9/11 attacks, but

he says the Bill of Rights has also deteriorated because of the war on drugs. His book relates

numerous stories of searches without warrants, punishments without due process, and other

unreasonable procedures. In criminal justice as in counterterrorism, Shipler argues, the

executive branch has grabbed immense power and distorted the process of determining guilt

or innocence. Join us for a discussion of these legal trends and what can be done to correctthem.

It is often asserted that taxpayer support for higher education is dwindling, endangering thenations economic future and forcing higher tuition prices. In reality that is far from the truth.

Almost any way you slice it the taxpayer burden for Americas ivory tower has been on the rise,

while the returns on investment have been at best indeterminate and at worst significantly

negative. Please join us for this important discussion of why the federal role in higher

A high priority for the Obama administration is fostering innovative workforce training strategies. Severalinitiatives are under way or about to be launched, including the Trade Adjustment Assistance CommunityCollege and Career Training Grants, Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge Grants, Workforce

Innovation Fund, and Health Profession Opportunity Grants. In this time of high unemployment andsluggish employment growth, questions arise about the role of these new and ongoing initiatives. Theadministrations proposed jobs bill includes major new related funding for community colleges.

This forum will examine how workforce development programming and policies are changing at the

federal, state, and local levels. Among the questions to be addressed are

What expanded role can, or should, community colleges and workforce investment boards play toupgrade the skills of the nations workforce?

What is the effectiveness of skills training for short-staffed jobs?

What are the most promising skills-development strategies during tough economic times?

What directions should federal policies take to make sure training needs are met?

transnationalists realize that their goal can only be achieved through Americas voluntary submission to global

legal authority, presented to the American people in Orwellian fashion as leadership and engagement.

In Sovereignty or Submission, John Fonte reveals how this troubling and fast-rising movement aims to subordinate

American sovereignty. The global governance movement does not seek legitimacy in democracy, but rather in its

own partisan interpretation of human rights. Globalists argue that the U.S. Constitution must conform to evolvingnorms of international law. While this idea may seem utopian, the efforts to implement it constitute a real threat

to American democracy. The conflict between global governance and democratic sovereignty promises to be at the

heart of world politics as far into the future as the eye can see.

    at

    Mount Vernon Place

    Undercroft Auditorium

    900 Massachusetts Avenue NW

    Washington, DC 20001

Featuring Paul R. Pillar, Director of Graduate Studies, Center for Peace and Security Studies, GeorgetownUniversity, Author, Intelligence and U.S. Foreign Policy (Columbia, 2011); and Joshua Rovner, Associate

Professor, Strategy and Policy, U.S. Naval War College, Author, Fixing the Facts: National Security and the

Politics of Intelligence (Cornell, 2011); with comments by Mark Lowenthal, President and CEO, The

Intelligence and Security Academy, Former Assistant Director of Central Intelligence for Analysis andProduction; moderated by Christopher Preble, Vice President, Defense and Foreign Policy Studies, Cato

    Institute.

At the heart of recent national security controversies, including 9/11 and the war in Iraq, lies the troubled

relationship between intelligence and policy. Two timely new books shine a spotlight on the problem. In Fixingthe Facts, Joshua Rovner chronicles major episodes in the history of American foreign policy that have beenclosely tied to the manipulation of intelligence estimates and considers how these have affected military

strategy, and the conduct of foreign policy. In Intelligence and U.S. Foreign Policy, Paul R. Pillar challenges the

belief that intelligence drives major national security decisions, and he casts doubt on fixes intended to preventfuture failures. He believes such efforts often waste critical resources and divert attention away from more

sensible reforms. Please join the authors as they discuss their books, with comments by intelligence veteran and

    scholar Mark Lowenthal.

    November 4-23, 2011

In this digital era, much of what is most important to us exists only as bits and bytes.

Modern technology can inspire a false sense of connectedness that alienates us from the

physical world and its interactions. As meticulously created objects, Mordini's fiberboard

sculptures are the organic antithesis to this digital paradigm. With dis-member, aninstallation of fragmented body parts and distorted appendages, Mordini explores themes

of disconnectedness, social hierarchies, and alienation.

Min Enghauser began making photographs as a child; exploring, learning and becoming aware

through photography. For Enghauser, photographs, and the act of making them are glimpses of

timeless spirits, of pure and unbiased realities of nature and time. Enghauser's exhibitDesert

Dwellare all images from the Anza-Borrego Desert where she found that there is a coming

together of the essence of the inhabitants and the spirit of place. Plant with rock, rock with sky,

sky with mountain. These inhabitants speak to each other without words and at their core is

the spirit of the other. Enghauser's photographs are the instruments through which she

discovers and uncovers the truth of this slowly changing landscape of unity, cohesion, beauty,

    mystery and fate.

Artisphere hosts an international artist exchange with Arlington's sister city Aachen, Germany for the second half

of a cultural exchange. For ten days, visiting artists from Germany will work together with Arlington-area artists to

create a site-specific installation within Artisphere. Their work spaces will be open to the public and will serve as a

visual documentation of the exchange. The first part of the exchange took place in April 2011 when Arlington

artists spent ten days in Aachen, Germany. The artists collaborated on site-specific installations in the Aula

Carolina, a 17th-century monastery that now serves as a cultural center in the city. The work they created was on

view at Aula Carolina for the week of the exchange, and has since traveled to other cities in Belgium and the

Netherlands. The goals of the exchange are for artists to work collaboratively to create site-specific installations, to

explore the differences and similarities in the artists situations, and to provide insight into cultural work of the

    two countries.

Sweet Tides, oil on canvas, 48 x 48

Alison Hall Cooley's work captures the rhythm and the transience of the natural world. She focuses on the memory of spaces in her work, using color to masterful effect in all

that she portrays. By incorporating color fields, shooting and falling lines, andetchings, which overlap and move, she creates compositions suggestive of coastal

landscapes. The dislocation of her interweaving values and color planes are steadied

by the navigation of her deliberate lines. Cooley, who has described herself as an artistwho has "a deep relationship with the paint," uses knives, spatulas and even her hands

in this tactile relationship. Cooley's most recent works explore the manner in which

natural elements transform man-made structures, revealing the beauty and mystery ofremembered spaces.

Over the past ten years, Alison Hall Cooley has exhibited in Nantucket (annual soloshows), Washington DC, Richmond, VA, and Lenox, MA. Her work is included in

over one hundred private collections, with a particularly strong support base inNantucket, where she currently resides, and the Washington DC area, where she grew

    up.

Cooley studied at Sarah Lawrence College and continued her education at the

Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC. She is the winner of several awards,

including the Charles C. McDougall Award for Promising New Artist. She has been

featured in numerous publications, including Nantucket Living, The Georgetowner

and the Nantucket Independent, and has been recognized by the Artists Association ofNantucket for her work.

University's Lauinger Library, in the Murray Conference Room, LAUINGER LIBRARY ), the study

day will explore recent research about the life, works, operatic milieu of the composer in

coordination with the 300th anniversary of his birth and celebrations initiated by the

Fondazione Pergolesi in 2010. The Saturday concert will feature Pergolesi's Confitebor tibi,

Morton Fine Art (MFA) is pleased to present (Re)calling & (Re)telling, a solo exhibition of

photographs by artist Kesha Bruce in conjunction with Fotoweek DC 2011.

    About (Re)calling & (Re)telling:

History and Meaning: When is a Story More Than Just a Story?

A good story allows us to make sense of the world by helping us to define who we are and

understand our place in it. In her Fotoweek DC exhibition, titled (Re)calling and (Re)telling,

artist Kesha Bruce offers viewers a contemporary entryway to the rich tradition of

storytelling in art through the use of both photography and collage.

For the past several years, Kesha Bruce has created work using an old collection of

photographs taken by her grandfather during his years as a soldier during the Korean War.

In addition to the many photographs of young African American soldiers going about their

daily routines, the collection also included snapshots and informal family portraits taken

upon his return home to Des Moines, Iowa. Fascinated by the people and places in eachphotograph, these images soon became the basis for two complete bodies of work.

The narratives Bruce recreates in (Re)calling and (Re)telling, are composed of a mysterious

mix of elements culled from the intimate terrain of memory, nostalgia, and the mundane

    remnants of daily life.

Also featured at Morton Fine Art is her latest series The Story, comprised of small, intimate

mixed media works on paper which render character and place through the use ofminimalist texts, each work relating to the next like non-linear chapters of a novel that

refuse to settle into a comfortable beginning, middle, and end.

About Kesha BRUCE (France, b. USA):

Born and raised in Iowa, Bruce studied painting at the University of Iowa before going on to

earn her MFA in Painting from Hunter College in New York City. She has received awards

from the New York Foundation for the Arts, The Vermont Studio Center, and The Puffin

Foundation. Her photographic work from (Re)calling & (Re)telling was awarded the EnFoco

New Works Photography prize and was included in the traveling exhibition DoubleExposure: African Americans Before and Behind the Camera.

    Elena Volkova:

    "In Between"

    (November 5-December 3)

    Opening Reception

    Saturday, November 5, 7:00-9:00 p.m.

    Hamiltonian Gallery

    1353 U Street NW

    Washington, DC 20009

Hamiltonian Gallery is pleased to announce the In

Between, a solo exhibition by Hamiltonian Fellow Elena

Volkova. In her newest series, Volkova explores drawing

as a process of perception by pushing the conceptual

boundaries of the medium off of the paper, and into the

    realm of space itself.

Elena Volkova presents a series of graphite drawings in

which the subject matter is light. Seemingly fundamental, her drawings of folded paper and shadows on walls using

a subtle value range are indicative of a systematic

process-oriented approach to drawing, yet the result

speaks more about the space around the actual drawn

object. By bringing attention to the shadows and highlights

that constitute an image, Volkova makes the viewer an

active participant of the installation, where the act of

looking, perceiving and comparing is emphasized.

By denoting dynamic two-dimensional surfaces defined by

light and shadow, Volkova has investigated the spatial

limits of drawing. The geometric forms in her drawings

present a flat plane shifting between representation and

    reality.

Volkova explains, "In this body of work, I would like to bring

the viewer's attention to the discrepancy between art and

reality. Employing the ideas of trompe-l'oil, I am interested

in the threshold between the real and the false, and the

moment at which the two become interchangeable."

Elena Volkova's drawings implement the ordinary and

commonplace, which instantly capacitates the viewer to

move beyond the familiar neutrality of a piece of paper

    and delve into its potential.
