There is such a wonderful bond between Athensand the Golden Isles of Georgia. What a reciprocal re-lationship! Coastal Bulldogs flock to the Classic Cityfor athletic events especially in the fall for football. Andof course for music and food and culture too!

And Athenians travel south to the beach through-out the year to enjoy surf and sun and sand! Many fam-ilies own homes in both places. Lots of generationshave grown up traveling to the other town all theirlives. And over the years many have joined the twotowns through matrimony and even a few franchises. The connections are endless.

I am proud of Islander and UGA student LexieLove organizing a fundraiser benefitting the Boys andGirls Club in Athens. The UGA Rec and Leisure Pro-gram will host Swing for the Kids on April 10th at theUGA Golf Course designed by Lexie’s father DavisLove, III. You can register for this 18 hole golf tourna-ment by contacting Kacy Jenkins at 706.424.6565 [email protected]. The grand prize is a golf date withPGA Golf Pro Davis Love, III. (Thanks Dad!)

And now that spring has sprung, it finally has has-n’t it? The migration to the beach has begun.

How fun to approach Bennie’s Red Barn and see avery decorated WoW Boot Camp car from ClarkeCounty parked in front. We walk in and visit with ourAthens’ neighbors Laura and Bobby Wilfong. After wespeak to some St. Simons’ friends and are seated, an at-tractive couple approaches and says, “are you the Bull-dawg Illustrated people?” And we met April andMichael Williams of WoW Boot Camp from Athens.

It has continued like that for several weeks. TheAthens families pouring through town…Catherine andCorky Warner, Eleanor and Alex Sams, Sarah and TomEllis, Patti and Ted McWhorter, Gena and Davis Knox,Amanda and John Dufur and Alison and David Aber-nathy. Familiar Classic City faces abound at the grocerystore, the Beachclub and Bubba Garcia’s.

Not that you need an excuse to book a trip to thebeach but mark your calendar for the SEC Men’s GolfTournament on St. Simons on April 17th. CoachHaack’s dawgs will need a fan gallery so head on down. The match is at Sea Island Golf Club, Seaside.

Vance and I went last year when it was at Freder-ica Golf Club, a Tom Fazio design, located on the northend of St. Simons Island next to the Sea Island Eques-trian Center. It is a beautiful spot to follow along andit was nice at the end to gather on the bank and watchthe teams finish. There were plenty of Bulldogs in at-tendance. And there were Gators and I mean bothkinds, our rival and also an alligator! Coach Haack saidthe alligator was on the bank last year for AdamMitchell because his shot was sort of in the drink.

Seaside Course will be much the same environ-ment with an incredible setting, great golf and a fun in-timate feel but add in a spectacular ocean view!

And while you are on the coast, play a little golfyourself. Make sure you get some Southern Soul BBQand a cocktail at Brogens. Don’t miss Jazz in the Parkon the lighthouse lawn on Sundays or the freshestseafood in town at Halyards or Crabdaddy’s. Comecoast awhile!

Some don’t believe it until the calendar makesit official. For others, the arrival of March Mad-ness or the sound of a cracking baseball bat is rea-son enough to believe it. Over on MilledgeAvenue, you know it’s here with one word: sun-dresses.

No matter your method of meteorology, thereis no denying that springtime has arrived inAthens.

Though the kudzu is still dormant, a fewdozen Diamond Dawgs fans brought life to KudzuHill at Foley Field for Georgia’s SEC opening seriesagainst Auburn. Also, it was hard to miss the fa-miliar black tarps that lined River Road andMilledge as spring fraternity band party seasoncommenced this past weekend.

For your humble correspondent, nothing pro-claims the arrival of spring like getting out to thegolf course to chase a white ball around the woodsfor an afternoon.

Luckily, the fine folks over at Jackson Spald-ing Public Relations hosted a media day at theUGA Golf Course in preparation for the StadionAthens Classic at UGA. The Nationwide Tourevent is going to be great for the Athens area, andStadion is making sure that the event will haveplenty of local competing in the field. Sponsorsexemptions have been guaranteed to Jay McLuenof Danielsville, UGA grad Paul Claxton and twotop performers from the current UGA men’s golfroster.

I have to be honest here. When Jud Doherty, president of Stadion, walked to the podium to an-nounce the sponsor’s exemptions, I had to fight tokeep my hopes from getting too high. I mean, whowouldn’t want to give a roundabout 11 handicap-per who was MVP of his high school golf squadin 2006 a shot at competing with the big boys inMay?

Well, apparently the powers that be passedme over this year. In a quest to prove my playingabilities to myself, I left the presser at the club-house and headed out to the course to post a scorethat would get Coach Haack and Stadion’s atten-tion. With publishing magnate Vance Leavy as myscorecard attest, I posted a score that was defi-nitely newsworthy. Unfortunately we have to paythe printer by the letter to publish this paper, andmy score just took up too much valuable copyspace to print here, but if you email me I will sendit to you. I already sent it to Coach Haack, and I’mwaiting on his invitation to join the Georgia Golfteam with bated breath.

In the meantime you can find me outside en-joying Athens much-anticipated emergence fromwinter. Sunshine and outdoor sporting events notonly make for great times with friends, but alsobetter quality photos for the paper! Next time youare out and about in Athens be sure to keep alookout for Bulldawg Illustrated photographers onthe prowl for fan photos and profiles. Until nexttime, enjoy the sunshine and Go Dawgs!

Georgia’s royal tennis program enjoyeda milestone weekend from March 12-14

On Friday, the 12th, the Bull-dogs, then ranked ninth, trailedNo. 6 Kentucky 3-0. The way ten-nis scoring goes is: one point isawarded for who wins the best ofthree pro-set (first to eight gamesby two) doubles matches. Thencome six best of three singlesmatches. It takes four points towin, and a 7-0 makes for a cleansweep. Georgia came stormingback to even things with the Wild-cats at 3-3, winning a pair of threesetters. With the match on theline, Winder native Drake Bern-stein, who was fighting the flu, captured the clincher at No. 5 sin-gles in three thrilling sets, rallyingfrom a 5-4 third set deficit to win7-5. The incredible victory wasGeorgia’s 70th straight at the DanMagill Tennis Complex.

With a perfect SoutheasternConference record and the incredi-ble home winning streak on theline, the Dogs came back on Sun-day the 12th to take a thriller fromVanderbilt 4-3. Senior Jamie Hunthad the clinching win at No. 3 sin-gles, emerging victorious 6-5 in thethird to extend the Bulldogs Athensvictory string to an amazing 71matches. And for the premiercoach in the country, the iconicManuel Diaz, it was career victoryNo. 500. Taking over in 1988 forthe greatest Bulldog ever, the leg-endary Magill who won 706matches, Diaz, an All-Americanplayer and assistant for his mentor, has kept Georgia at the top of thecollegiate tennis mountaintop inwhat is one of the great transitionsof power in sports annals.

Dating back to 1985, whenGeorgia captured the nationalchampionship, the Bulldogs havewon six national titles and playedfor the championship at amazing13 times.

Georgia’s domination of theSEC has been astounding. Since1971, the Bulldogs have capturedthe conference crown an amazing32 times. That mastery continues. In the Bulldogs last 51 duel SECmatches, Georgia has won an in-credible 49 times.

What has made the Georgiatennis program so incredibly spe-cial is the unique camaraderie andfamily atmosphere fosteredthrough the tremendous successand unparalleled stability of havingonly two head coaches for the past57 years.

The 2010 season is a truly spe-cial one, as the NCAA champi-onships, for both men and women, return home to Athens. It wasMagill who was the pioneer of theteam tournament format, whichtook the sport’s popularity to neverbefore seen heights, and it wasMagill who was the driving forcebehind making Athens the perma-nent and now semi-permanenthome for the event.

But for Bulldogs, what makesthe 2010 campaign extra special isthat it is the 25-year anniversary ofthe incredible national champi-onship of 1985 – captained by thegreatest senior trio of legends incollegiate tennis annals – MichaelPernfors, George Bezecny and AllenMiller.

As an indicator of Georgia’sgreat tennis lineage, two of Bern-stein’s youth coaches were Millerand fellow Bulldog legend WadeMcGuire.

The legacy continues. And oh by the way, Diaz cele-

brated his birthday on the 16th.

With championship-caliber training facilities, multiple alumni competing on thePGA and LPGA tours and enough SEC Championships to make your head spin, it is hardto ignore the Georgia Golf program.

Led by head coaches Chris Haack and Kelly Hester, both the Men’s and Women’ssquads are pushing for another SEC Title in 2010. The men claim 27 conference titleswhile women have 19 SEC trophies on the mantle.

Best of all for local Dawg fans, both teams will be competing in local events. Georgiagolf fans can see the men’s team in action at the Linger Longer Invitational, held March26-28 at the Landing course at Reynolds’ Plantation in Greensboro. The women’s teamwill be hosting the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the UGA Golf Course during thesame timeframe.

On the men’s side of the program, youth defines the team’s character. The Dawgsonly bring one Senior, Hudson Swafford to the lineup in 2010. Only eight men deep, theDawgs feature three juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen. However, the squad fea-tures the third youngest golfer to ever win the Georgia Amateur Championship in Hud-son Swafford. The Thomasville Junior was only older than Bobby Jones and Charlie Yateswhen winning the Georgia Amateur in 2007. Swafford was unable to defend his titlefrom fellow Junior Georgia teammate Russell Henley, who set Georgia Amateur tourna-ment scoring records at 10-under par and 16-under par in 2008 and 2009, respectively.

The arrival of the Stadion Athens Classic at UGA to the University Golf Course inApril brings an added fold to intrasquad competition for the men’s team in 2010. Present-ing sponsor Stadion Money Management has announced that they will provide two spon-sor exemptions for the two members of the men’s golf team with the lowest scoringaverage of 2010. In the event that a Georgia golfer who is not one of the two team scoringleaders wins low medalist honors at the SEC Championship Tournament at the SeasideCourse at Sea Island Golf Club (April 16-18), that golfer will earn an automatic sponsorexemption into the Nationwide Tour event.

Concerning the Women’s Squad, Spaniard sensation Marta Silva Samora anchors aGeorgia team that is heading into their home tournament off a 7th place finish in the TigerWave invitational in New Orleans, Louisiana. Samora is a graduate of teaching guru HankHaney’s International Junior Golf Academy and has been named by Golf Digest as a“Player you'll know by season's end.”

Gym DawgsIt’s now down to businesswith SECs on March 27th

Rare is the occasion that a first year head coach is burdened with the expec-tations that come with being a five-time defending national champion. Come tothink of it, rare is the occasion that any team, in any sport, is faced with over-coming such high expectations.

Such is life for Jay Clark and the Georgia Gym Dogs.On Sunday night, the Gym Dogs’ class of 2010 celebrated Senior Night.

Lauren Johnson, Courtney McCool, Marcia Newby, Lauren Sessler and GraceTaylor went out in style to the tune of a 196.800-193.900 win over NC State. Itwas the girls’ 100th win in a Georgia leotard. Yes, you read that right, 100th.This group of seniors also contributed in a large way to a home winning streakthat now spans five seasons, 24 meets, and 34 competitions in Athens. For someperspective, the last time the Gym Dogs lost a competition in Athens, DJ Shock-ley was Georgia’s starting quarterback.

The Gym Dogs’ success is unparalleled, and hardly inconspicuous. Withconference rivals like Florida and Alabama tired of playing second fiddle to theDawgs in national competition, the upcoming SEC Tournament looks to be agreat preview of what each team will be bringing to the NCAA Championships.

After dropping meets to SEC foes Florida, Alabama and Auburn earlier inthe year, the Gym Dogs have bounced back and posted the conference’s highestscore of the year, a 197.900 that came against UCLA in early March. SEC powersAlabama and Florida have posted top marks of 197.450 and 197.550, respec-tively.

Perhaps Grace Taylor said it best after the final home meet of the year, “Nowthat senior day is over it is business. It is no more ‘last times.’ It’s business.”

Jay Clark is preaching the same work ethic heading into the postseason,“The gymnastics needs to be the same,” Clark said of the postseason. “We havealways said that we want to practice the same way we perform. So now it is timeto get in championship mode and start performing like we practice.”

If recent meets are any indication, the Gym Dogs’ practices must be lookingup. After falling from their preseason number one ranking, the team has climbedback into the top five, sporting a number five ranking headed into the offseason.Alabama is No. 1 with a 197.195 followed by Oklahoma (197.100), UCLA(196.900), Florida (196.850), Georgia (196.690).

The SEC Gymnastics Championships are in Jacksonville, Florida on March27th. Georgia has won sixteen SEC Gymnastics titles.

When I first met Mark Fox just under a year ago in Albany, Georgia, I had mydoubts.

Mark Fox was making an appearance alongside Mark Richt at the Albany Bull-dog Club Meeting at Doublegate Country Club, to get the good people of SouthwestGeorgia fired up for a new era in Bulldawg Basketball.

At the meeting’s end, the line to get Mark Richt’s autograph stretched aroundthe pro shop and back to the Doublegate putting green.

Mark Fox looked on, alone behind some Sharpies and a stack of posters thatread “There’s a Fox in the Doghouse!”

Seizing the opportunity, I stepped out of line to get Richt’s signature for achance to talk to what I had penned as the quiet and calculated new basketballcoach.

With what had become admittedly low personal expectations for the Georgiabasketball program, I didn’t expect too much from Fox. What I found when I intro-duced myself was a genuine guy who seemed consumed with bringing Georgia bas-ketball to the big time.

“We’ll see.” I told myself as I began the long drive back to Athens. Flash forward eight months and seeing was believing. The first sign came at the Gwinnett Arena with a three-point victory over Illi-

nois. Next, Fox defended the Streak at Stegeman by defeating Georgia Tech. Here atBulldawg Illustrated, we were so excited about the Tennessee and Florida wins thatwe devoted an entire cover to each.

By the time Senior Night rolled around, scalpers were fetching more for theGeorgia-Kentucky basketball matchup than they were getting for the Georgia-Ken-tucky football matchup. When the ticket black market starts to boom for Georgiabasketball, you can bet that the culture and expectations on South Campus havechanged for the better.

While Georgia came up short against the Cats at Stegeman that night, theDawgs were never outcoached.

With Coach Fox looking to bring in a strong recruiting class for 2010-2011 andthe Athletic Association giving Stegeman Coliseum a facelift, the future looks brightfor the Hoop Dawgs. And as for the Albany Bulldawg Club, I am willing to bet theline for Coach Fox’s autograph will stretch at least to the tennis courts this year.
