Page 2: BF Teacher welcome magazine

WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRMANI would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to British Fortune. Our aspiration is to be the leading provider of international education programmes to Chinese students. The success of our programmes will be determined by the quality of our teaching staff and I am delighted that you have chosen to join us as we open our first centres in China. Our students will be looking to us to supply a challenging but successful pathway to leading universities in the UK. It is therefore our intention to provide a rigorous academic environment with the opportunity to achieve fluency in the English language and to have exposure to a diverse extra-curricula programme. Our teachers have been carefully selected to meet these demanding requirements and I am confident that, with your support and commitment, we will achieve our objectives. This booklet has been designed to provide you with a useful introduction to British Fortune and I hope that it will act as the starting point for a successful and rewarding career with us.

STRATEGYOur core strategy for achieving this is to offer an academically rigorous iGCSE curriculum over two years allowing students to develop their English language fluency, their base of academic skills and also their awareness of the nuances between British and Chinese education. To support this we may offer students in selected centres the chance to study for three years between the ages of 11 and 14 on the CIE Cambridge Secondary 1. Having completed iGCSE we will support A levels be it in the UK or in China and will offer extensive guidance with their UCAS applications.

MISSION STATEMENTWe aspire to be the highest quality providers of the British education model in China equipping students to make Russell group university applications.

We aim to do this through outstanding teachers and excellent resources all within a hardworking and supportive management structure.

GUIDING PRINCIPLESTHE BRITISH FORTUNE VISION

2. CAREER ASPIRATIONSOur second aim is to demonstrate the wealth of opportunities that our education can deliver to their personal and professional lives. One aspect of British Fortune we will come to pride is our determination to make students aware of the exciting careers they can have in the future and how we can start building the knowledge and skills they need to be lawyers, doctors, movie directors or even teachers in the future. As such please use every opportunity to highlight all the thousands of jobs that are available for people ready to work hard and develop their intellectual and social skills. We are anecdotally aware that many students on the Chinese curriculum do not invest in their education because they cannot see where their classes lead and how what their future can hold. British Fortune students should be constantly enlightened on the opportunities that are possible for them in a global employment market and how our programme invests in their career potential.

3. ANGLO-SINO COOPERATIONWe are excited to send you to China in the knowledge that you will be treated as important guests in a country where education is treated with the utmost respect and social status. Likewise this is a truly exciting opportunity for all of us to build small but lasting relationships with communities across our two countries. Our students will be interested to hear

1. ENGLISH LANGUAGEFirstly we recognise that all of our students will be non-native English speakers with limited prior exposure to quality teaching of English as a foreign language. As such it is our duty to embrace this challenge of educating Chinese students in English with constant enthusiasm, empathy and innovation. Our first logical goal must be to achieve the deepest fluency in as many students as often as possible. This means making every lesson an opportunity to develop the students

collective abilities to listen, to read, to discuss. We have every belief in you as professionals to evolve and share strategies and resources that make learning English, even through academic subjects, a fun and life-changing experience. We must convey total respect to all the students as they are expressing themselves in a second language and think how lucky we are that we weren’t asked to do A levels in French as teenagers!

all about British history, geography and cultural life. Likewise they will want to demonstrate all the same aspects that excite them about their own country and will welcome you to experience each element. As such we will always have the mindset of respect, interest and appreciation of what is similar, what is different and what will happen in the future to build social, economic and political ties between the UK and China.

4. TECHNOLOGYMy own hyperbole aside we live in an age of remarkable technological breakthrough and we can only extrapolate that the future holds even more advances in science, communication and trade. British Fortune students must be given every opportunity to embrace what technology can do for them in their education, their extracurricular life and their future careers by working with and learning how to use a range of media and resources. As such we will supply the physical products and the opportunity inside and outside of class to write blogs, film documentaries, edit video and market on social media for the educational and enrichment opportunities that they yield.

5. DEBATEAn aspect of British education that will be new to many Chinese students is the notion that they will be asked to assert opinions on a range of topics. They will also find it harder to intellectually challenge the views of colleagues and indeed teachers than a typical British counterpart at the same age. As such we will work on this and develop in them the language and public speaking confidence to air their research and opinions in a

coherent and eloquent fashion. They will also be challenged intellectually and in prose to find areas of development in their favourite subjects where there are existing debates and to start to form the informed positions on these topics which often differentiate between the successful and the unsuccessful UCAS applicant.

Finally we will only achieve all this by investing in you - the team members who will be the focus of the student

experience at British Fortune centres. As Academic Director I want to support you all as colleagues, as professionals and as innovators that are encouraged to examine all aspects of their work towards the dream of being totally proud of each term’s work. Much of this guide is in the spirit of welcoming you to this project and illustrating who you can turn to for advice on making this a wonderful experience for everyone involved.

Page 6: BF Teacher welcome magazine

Although the designs are yet to be finalised, the centre is likely to include the following:

THE LIBRARYThe focal point of the BF Centre will be the library, which is likely to span the front of the centre. This is a space for students to relax and study together and will be stocked with both English and Chinese learning materials.

THE CLASSROOMSThere will be five main teaching rooms with a capacity of 20 students, each equipped with the latest learning technologies. (Read more about our classroom technologies on page 10).

STAFF AREASThere will be private offices for the centre head and subject leaders and shared offices for all teaching staff.

DESIGNING THE BEIJING SCHOOL

LEE MARKHAMBrand DirectorBritish Fortune Group

As the brand and communications team it is our job to bring the British Fortune vision to life through our communication channels - our marketing materials, our website and even the schools themselves.

The BF education centre in Beijing needs to tell students and parents as soon as they arrive that this is the best of British education in China. And so we have enlisted British Architectural firm, John McAslan and partners who have designed buildings for British institutions such as Lancaster University, University of Manchester, Goldsmiths College and Dulwich College.

On these pages are some early design ideas from McAslan.

Beijing has been the capital of China for 850 years; it is one of the four great ancient capitals of China. The area of the school is 40 minutes from downtown Beijing. It is close to the airport, the area is known as the Shunyi District. There are a number of international schools in this area. As a result there is a significant expat presence. Pinnacle Plaza, which is close by, has a western supermarket, a number of western shops and a

western bar showing most sports. The best way to get into Beijing is on the tube. Line 15 comes out to Shunyi and takes you into Beijing.

Beijing itself has a huge amount to offer. At the heart of Beijing is the Forbidden City, home to the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the largest palace complex of the nation and the world. The Forbidden City also hosts the Palace

Museum with imperial collections of Chinese art. Old Beijing is wonderful and amazing while New Beijing is fantastic and exciting. Economic reform and the preparation for the Olympic Games has accelerated the pace and scale of change towards modernity. Present-day Beijing offers an endless mixture of theatres, discos, bars, business centres, all kinds of restaurants and shopping malls.

It is the goal of British Fortune to bring the best of British education to all of China in time. This

will not only be through media, electronic resources and masterclass tours, but also through

British Fortune schools dotted throughout the country. September 2013 marks the first stage

of this venture and we have a number of cities which we may be sending our staff to.

OUR BF SCHOOL LOCATIONS

On Lake Tai, Wuxi borders the cities Changzhou to the west and Suzhou to the east. Wuxi has strong commercial links with Shanghai which is only 45 minutes away. Alongside its natural beauty Wuxi is hot in the summer and cool in the winter whilst maintaining a healthy rainfall average all year round which is good for clearing the air. Wuxi has excellent entertainment facilities including baseball teams, cinemas and the first Chinese film studio ever built. Living in Wuxi will be a real pleasure and we will find excellent accommodation for staff so all they need to worry about is where to eat at the weekend and when to do that marking!

WUXI

Capital of Inner Mongolia, Hohhot means “the blue city” - the colour blue in Mongol culture is associated with the sky, eternity and purity. Hohhot is the hometown of BF Group CEO Dr Ma Liang and as such any teachers working here can expect the best in terms of accommodation, teaching facilities and VIP treatment around town. In terms of climate Hohhot appears to have it all, heat, humidity, rain, snow - you name it so it should be fascinating to live there for a short spell and experience it all. Special activities available for teachers include horse riding, treks into the countryside, visiting numerous temples and museums.

Guangzhou, previously known as Canton for all you history buffs — is the capital of the Guangdong province. Located on the Pearl River, about 120 km north-northwest of Hong Kong and north-northeast of Macau, Guangzhou is a key national transportation hub and trading port. This is a vibrant city with extensive shopping, dining and entertainment facilities. This is locally referred to as a “fire city” so named for its infamous warmth and humidity so less need to wear those thermals that you packed! Our accommodation is to be confirmed but suffice to say that we will look for a suitably calm and relaxed suburb for scholarly relaxation whilst also aiming for good transport links.

Staff laptopsIn order for you to develop and deliver excellent electronic resources we have issued you with your very own high spec laptop for your sole use. You may also be aware that this will become your own private property upon completion of your contract. We will be issuing you with this one laptop so if you view yourself as someone

The future of much of what we do will be influenced by, and at times transformed by, technology. That is not to say that the basics have ever changed, a good teacher can adapt to deliver under an oak tree in a field, but as part of our brand identity we want to explore all the ways ICT can support students and staff alike.

liable to drop it, lose it, smother it in jam we recommend that you find insurance for your laptop.

As well as this being a teaching resource we also want it to act as a means by which you can learn more about local events, stay in communication with friends and family at home and also for relaxing

after a hard day through watching media etc. So please do use it as your own laptop and feel free to add apps etc from trusted sources but be forewarned that this will be viewed as company property until the completion of your contract and as such you must comply with our Policies on Acceptable Internet Usage.

EmailTEACHING AND LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES

For your support in this project we have created email accounts so that we can all effectively communicate. Please do check these regularly as important (and often fun!) Information will be delivered in this channel. We welcome you to use these accounts for the professional image they convey towards external stakeholders but take the usual caution in your language and tone and avoid any instance of you appearing to act as a spokesperson for the company unless specifically delegated to do so. As such please take the time to familiarise yourself with our Policies on email usage.

To match the quality of your preparation and delivery of lessons we have invested in excellent boards through which you can use, adapt, create and save a number of outstanding resources across a range of media types. You will receive regular and bespoke training to match your particular interests throughout the year which will be lead by Richard Ferguson from Guangzhou and your Academic Director, UK.

VLEIt is our intention that over time we will develop the resources and infrastructure to have a first class virtual learning environment so that students, parents and their future peers can all take part in and learn from exciting educational material. We recognise that building this will take time and energy on everyone’s part but hope that both the desired goal and the investment in skills and resources required to meet our aim will be of professional interest to you all. Full training and information on our VLE and your role within making it an outstanding teaching resource will delivered at a later date.

This platform is increasingly the industry standard in the UK so to start, develop or refresh your understanding of it can only be a good thing whatever your career holds. Full training will be delivered in centre and we have ongoing support to solve any problems that may occur. Given our plans to develop our breadth of coverage throughout China we can state from the outset that we are actively seeking Centre Heads for future schools and will inevitably look favourably upon the staff that are already performing to a high standard as part of our team.

We will be working with CIE to establish excellent working practices and quality of delivery throughout our centres. As such you will receive training on your subject, on CIE standards and the broader

implications of meeting exam board regulations. Likewise to monitor our overall performance we will be subject to inspections from a Quality Assurance Committee and as such you will receive OFSTED standard assessment of lessons, target setting and record keeping which can be used to match your understanding of outstanding delivery of teaching across continents.

Your Head of Centre will discuss with you training needs alongside delivering supportive observations all geared towards your flourishing as a specialist in Anglo-Sino education.

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO CHINAChina is situated in eastern Asia on the western shore of the Pacific Ocean, with an area of 9.6 million square kilometers. China’s continental coastline extends for about 18000 kilometers, and its vast sea surface is studded with more than 5000 island, of which Taiwan and Hainan are the largest.China has the largest population in the world, in 2008 the population reached 1.328 billion, which totals approximately 22% of the total world population.

China has a continental climate, common high temperature in summer, more than 30 degree. But in winter, North parts cold and South parts warm, there is a big difference in temperature.

Currently, there are seven official public holidays in China, namely the New Year Holiday, the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), the Tomb Sweeping Day, the Labor Day, the Dragon Boat Festival Holiday, the Mid-Autumn Festival Holiday and the National Day.

Here are some hints and tips on what to do as you settle in to your new life in China.

AN INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE CULTURE

Page 15: BF Teacher welcome magazine

CHINESE ETIQUETTE• Always stand up or remain standing when being introduced.• Address a person by an honorific title or by Mr, Mrs etc. Plus their family name.• A handshake is the most common form of greeting.• The oldest person is always greeted first as a sign of respect.

TABLE MANNERS• A round dining table is more popular than a rectangular or square one. The guest of honor is always seated to the right of the host; the next in line will sit on his left. Guests should be seated after the host’s invitation, and it is discourteous to seat guests at the place where the dishes are served.• Dining may only begin once the host and all his guests are seated. • On a typical Chinese dining table there is a cup, a bowl and a small dish together with chopsticks and spoons. Dishes are always presented in the centre of the table.• Apart from soup, all dishes should be eaten with chopsticks. There are many no-nos with chopsticks such as twiddling them, licking them, using them to stir the food, gesturing with them or pointing them at others. Never stick chopsticks in the centre of rice as this is a sign of sacrifice.• Formal dining is always accompanied by tea, beer or a distilled spirit. The person sat closest to the teapot or wine bottle should pour for others, starting with the most senior or superior. Guests should not pour tea or wine for themselves.• If you cannot eat all your meal or you do not like it, it is fine to leave the rest in the bowl.

GIVING AND RECEIVING GIFTS• Always present and receive gifts with both hands.• When wrapping gifts, avoid using white or black wrapping paper.• It is inappropriate to give a clock or anything to do with the number four as it is associated with funerals and death.• Small items such as books, music. CDs, perfumes, cigarettes and candies from your country are always well received.

Page 19: BF Teacher welcome magazine

FREQUENTLY

ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW MANY HOURS A WEEK WILL I BE TEACHING?Subject teachers will have a maximum of 25 hours subject teaching per week.

HOW MANY STUDENTS WILL I TEACH?Class sizes reflect our values of quality in reflecting a low ratio of students to teacher. We anticipate that dependent in subject taught a typical class size might be 12-16 students.

WHAT HOLIDAYS AND TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES WILL I GET?Subject teachers will receive holiday during two half-terms and in between term time. Each centre’s calendar will be slightly different to reflect the requirements of the host school. Travel outside of China depends on the Visa issued so for full information on your ability to leave and re-enter China please contact your Academic Director.
