ViennAExplore the sights of Austria’s beautiful Baroque capital, Vienna, which for centuries was the centre of the splendid Habsburg Empire. The city remains infused with the grand imperial spirit in the form of magnificent palaces and grand mansions surrounding the Innere Stadt. The city’s cultural heritage is mainly musical, the great composers like Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Strauss all having lived and performed here. Vienna is a city of music, but it is also synonymous with gourmet fare, cakes, coffee, the Vienna Boys’ Choir and the Lippizzaner stallions at the world-famous Spanish Riding School. Vienna is a captivating capital that blends Italian romanticism with a Germanic orderliness.

sAlZBurGUntil 1816 Salzburg was a city-state, independent of the Habsburgs and ruled by powerful prince-archbishops. It is situated on the northern border of Austria, 70 miles (113km) southeast of Munich, in a picturesque setting surrounded by mountains. Mozart was born here and the city’s fascination with its most-famous son is best demonstrated during the Salzburg Festival which presents world-class performances of opera, drama and concerts over a period of six weeks each summer. Mozart’s impression has been left all over the town - his image is on every postcard and chocolate box and both his birthplace and family house are now museums offering detailed insight into his life and work.

The city is also the home town of Baroque and the south side of the river is a Baroque masterpiece of charming churches, squares, houses and fountains.

innsBruck became the capital of Tyrol in 1429 and in the 15th century the city became a centre of European politics and culture as emperor Maximilian I moved the Imperial court to Innsbruck in the 1490s. Many old buildings from the middle ages and modern times survived in the heart of Innsbrucks old town. Innsbruck has also hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976. There are two universities and several colleges in Innsbruck, with over 25,000 students altogether, (including a significant Italian population) making the city’s nightlife very lively.

BreGenZCapital of Voralberg Population ca. 29,000

The town of Bregenz is located on the Bodensee (Lake Constance) close to the four-border corner of Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Bregenz was the military fort and base of trade known as Brigantinum. The Upper town district is the oldest, with buildings from the 13th through to the 16th century. In this part of town you can still find parts of the original fortifying town walls.

Must see: The biggest cultural event is the Bregenz Festival in the summer, with operas and plays, held on a stage built on the Bodensee itself.

klAGenfurtCapital of CarinthiaPop. ca. 92,000

Today, Klagenfurt is a modern, cosmopolitan city with 15 partner towns, maintained and animated its historic old part of town (three times awarded the Europa Nostra Award) and invested in the future with universities, colleges and the Lakeside Software Park.

Must see: Boat excursions on the lakes; cultural sites and museums.

innsBruckCapital of Tirol - Pop. ca. 130,000

The first recorded mention of the name ‘Inspruke’ dates back to 1167. The name of the town is derived from the original meaning “Bridge over the Inn”. This bridge was a key factor in the development of trade and the movement of goods between regions both north and south of the Alps. Twice host to the Olympic Winter Games, Innsbruck boasts a rich cultural heritage coupled with a great range of premium sports facilities.

ViennACapital of Austria - Pop. ca. 1.62m

Settlements along the Danube, near what is now the City of Vienna, can be traced back to the 5th century BC. These were of Celtic origin as is the name Vienna derived from the Celtic “Vedunia” for river in the woods. It was made residence of the Babenbergs and the city walls were raised in 1200. Vienna was to become the capital of the Habsburg empire for almost seven centuries. In 1278 the city fell to Rudolf of Habsburg, but had to compete for centuries with Prague, Linz and Graz as the imperial residence on account of its vulnerability to attack from the Turks, who first laid siege to it in 1529. In 1857, the city wall and its bastions were razed, and during the following years a boulevard - The Ringstrasse - encircling the city was created.

st. PöltenCapital of Lower AustriaPopulation ca. 51,000

Austria’s oldest town and youngest provincial capital. The oldest part of the city is built on the site of the ancient Roman city Aelium Cetium that existed between the 2nd and the 4th century. The name Sankt Pölten is derived from Hippolytus of Rome. The city was renamed to Sankt Hippolyt, then Sankt Polyt and finally Sankt Pölten.

Must see: State Museum, Herzogenburg Monastery, Nussdorf Museum of Primitive times.

GrAZCapital of Styria - Pop. ca.250,000

Graz was originally the site of a Roman fort. The German name ‘Graz’ was first used in 1128, and during this time dukes under Babenberg rule made the town into an important commercial centre. Later Graz came under the rule of the Habsburgs, and in 1281 gained special privileges from King Rudolph I.

eisenstAdtCapital of Burgenland Population ca. 278,000

Settled since 750BC, Eisenstadt has a vast history involving Celts, Romans, the Huns, the Bavarii, Charlemagne, and a whole host of emperors and was, in turn, occupied by the Mongols and the Ottomans. In 1766 Joseph Haydn was appointed as the prince’s Hofkapellmeister, and so began the great artistic period in the city’s history. Eisenstadt is the cultural and educational centre of the province of Burgenland.

The Original Sacher TorteThis is the world’s most famous chocolate cake! Its recipe is a well-kept secret since 1832. Taste its unique flavour and give it away as a surprise present!

The story of the legendary chocolate cake filled with apricot jam began in 1832. Franz Sacher was a 16-year old apprentice at the court of Prince Metternich when he was asked to create an especially delicious dessert for distinguished guests. The guests loved it and it became known as the Sacher Torte. Today, the Sacher Torte is exported across the world. More than 360,000 Original Sacher Torten are produced every year in exactly the same way as 175 years ago.

Enjoy the original Torte in Vienna or Salzburg, Innsbruck or Graz! Or even at home. There are many recipes freely available on the internet. There are also many mail-order businesses that will sell and deliver their version of the cake, worldwide.

emPress sisiBorn in Munich, Bavaria. Elisabeth accompanied her mother and her 18-year-old sister, Helene, on a trip to the resort of Bad Ischl in 1852, Upper Austria , where they hoped Helene would attract the attention of their cousin, 23-year-old Franz Joseph, then Emperor of Austria. Instead, Franz Joseph chose Elisabeth, and the couple were married in Vienna at St. Augustine’s Church on April 24, 1854. Elisabeth later wrote that she regretted accepting his proposal for the rest of her life.

Elisabeth had difficulty adapting to the strict etiquette practiced at the Habsburg Court. Nevertheless she bore the Emperor three children in quick succession: Archduchess Sophie of Austria (1855–1857), Archduchess Gisela of Austria (1856–1932), and the hoped-for crown prince, Rudolf (1858–1889). In 1860 she left Vienna after contracting a lung-disease which was presumably psychosomatic. She spent the winter in Madeira and only returned to Vienna after having visited the Ionian Islands. Soon after that she fell ill again and returned to Corfu. After that Elisabeth began to use her beauty to gain influence on her husband. She achieved her only political goal whereby in 1867 she and Franz Joseph were crowned King and Queen of Hungary, and ten months later, another child Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austria (1868–1924) followed.

GriecHenBeisl inn The Griechen Beisl is mentioned as an inn called ‘Zum Gelben Adler’ (The Yellow Eagle) in old chronicles as early as 1500AD. Since then it has frequently changed names, being known as ‘Zum Roten Dachl’ (The Little Red Roof), and then ‘Zum Goldenen Engel’ (The Golden Angel), but it has always been an inn, and like Vienna, it went through many happy but also grim and turbulent times.

In 1897 Franz Hauer acquired the Griechen Beisl from his father-in-law and successfully turned it into a thriving business. Hauer became the greatest art collector in Vienna as well as the discoverer of numerous artists of great importance.! As a testimony to these encounters, the Mark Twain Room still conserves the autographs of these famous artists.

Beethoven, Brahms, Chaliapin, Grillparzer, Lüger, Nestroy, Schubert, Schwind, Strauss, Mark Twain, Wagner, Waldmüller and Graf Zeppelin to name but a few, all of whom felt the eternal spirit of centuries past, whilst eating and drinking in blissful reverie.

GustAV klimt (1862-1918), painting genius and pioneer of the Modern Era around 1900, would have celebrated his 150th birthday this year. Klimt spent most of his life in Vienna. His paintings, in particular The Kiss – one of the world’s best-known images – are rightly seen as epitomizing the spirit of optimism that heralded the dawn of the modernist era!

His brother Ernst, and Franz Matsch accepted a number of commissions to decorate buildings on Vienna’s showpiece Ringstrasse Boulevard. The staircases of the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Burgtheater are two outstanding examples of their work.

The legacy of Klimt and his fellow artists’ 1897 protest against outdated concepts of art, a move that culminated with the foundation of the Secession Movement, can be seen to this day: created by Joseph Maria Olbrich, the new Secession Building Exhibition Hall bears the motto of “To every age its art, to art its freedom”. Klimt contributed the Beethoven Frieze for the building. With 22 pieces by the artist, Vienna’s Belvedere is home to the world’s largest Klimt collection. There are also major works on display at the Leopold Museum, the Wien Museum and the Albertina.

During 2012, Klimt’s anniversary year, visitors to Vienna can experience how the artist’s paintings have lost nothing of their allure over time.

imPeriAl PAlAce - HofBurGFor more than seven centuries, the great empire of the Habsburgs was ruled from the Imperial Palace. Today, the Gothic Imperial Chapel, where the Vienna Boys’ Choir perform during High Mass on Sunday, is a remnant of the Imperial Palace during the Middle Ages.

The Palace, which until 1918 was inhabited by the imperial family, was originally a castle built in the thirteenth century, which was extended to a splendid residence in accordance with the increasing power of the Habsburgs and the expansion of their realm.Today, the Imperial Palace houses the office of the President of Austria as well as an important congress centre and numerous art collections.

scHönBrunn PAlAceSchönbrunn, the former summer residence of the imperial family, is considered one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Europe. The Habsburgs resided here the better part of the year in numerous rooms for their large imperial family in addition to representational rooms.

Emperor Franz Joseph, who later married the enchanting Sisi and reigned from 1848 to 1916, was born here in 1830. The monarch spent his last years entirely in the palace, which became the property of the new Republic of Austria two years after his death.

Today, the palace is part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage due to its historic importance, its unique grounds and its splendid furnishings.

ViennA stAte oPerAThe Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper) is an opera house – and opera company – with a history dating back to the mid-19th century. It is located in the centre of Vienna. It was originally called the Vienna Court Opera (Wiener Hofoper). In 1920, with the replacement of the Habsburg Monarchy by the First Austrian Republic, it was renamed the Vienna State Opera. Members of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra are recruited for the Vienna Philharmonic.

Looking at the front of the building from the Ring Road, you can see the original structure has been preserved since 1869. The facades are decorated in Renaissance-style arches, and the veranda on the Ring Road side emphasizes the public character of the building. The statues of the two riders on horseback were placed on the main facade of the loggia in 1876. They were created by Ernst Julius Hähnel, and represent Erato’s two winged horses that are led by “Harmony and the Muse of Poetry”.

st. stePHen’s cAtHedrAlSt. Stephen’s Cathedral, Austria’s most eminent Gothic edifice, houses a wealth of art treasures, some of which can only be seen during a guided tour..

During the 18th century, the cathedral was decorated with Baroque altarpieces - the panel of the main altar shows its namesake St. Stephen.

In the North Tower, Austria’s largest bell, known as the Boomer Bell (Pummerin), has found its home. There is an express elevator to the observation platform for a great view of Vienna.

Next to the North Tower elevator is the entrance to the catacombs underneath the cathedral, an underground burial place which contains the mausoleum of the bishops, the tombs of Duke Rudolph the Founder and 14 other members of the Habsburg family.

In the South Tower, the 343 steps of a tight spiral staircase lead up to the watchman’s lookout 246 feet above street level.

tHe Viennese HeuriGeThe real Viennese “heurige”, or wine taverns, have served as a backdrop for many films. However, in the legendary comfortable atmosphere, they primarily offer the Viennese and their guests entertainment, fine Viennese wines and the fitting culinary accompaniment. A place in which to feel good, in which everyone is warmly welcome. The real Viennese heurige, in which only Viennese wines are served, are identified by a bunch of pine branches and by the word “Ausg’steckt” written on a board, which simultaneously shows when the tavern is open.

However, the word “heurige” does not just describe the tavern itself, but also the wine from the current vintage, which – in accordance with tradition - may be so-called until 11 November (St Martin’s Day). Alongside the pleasant wine by the glass, the Viennese heurige also offer their guests fine wines sold in “bouteillen” (0.75 litre bottles), reflecting the richness of the variety and the special Viennese climate, and corresponding glass and tableware. And sometimes, with a little luck, “live music” can even be heard in the secluded gardens or homely parlours...

Performed in historic costumes in one of four different Vienna venues: Musikverein, Konzerthaus, State Opera House and the Hofburg. The program of the Vienna Mozart Concerts is characterised by a very homogeneous selection of works. silent night - holy night adult child

Prices From 50 24

Duration: approx. 4 hours

The Christmas carol “Silent Night! Holy Night!” was heard for the first time on Christmas Eve in 1818 in the St. Nikolaus parish church. Following the damaging floods of the 1890’s, St. Nikolaus’ church was demolished and the Silent Night Memorial Chapel was built on the site and consecrated on August 15, 1937.

Every year on December 24th at 5 p.m., a memorial service in honour of the creators of the Silent Night carol takes place in front of the Silent Night Memorial Chapel.

A full day excursion takes you along the Salzach river valley past many of Austria’s ski resorts. Near Schladming, location of the 1982 Ski World Championships, we ascend up to the ‘Steirische Ramsau’ 1000m above sea level at the base of one of the Alpine glacier massives - the Dachstein. In the village there is time for a stroll in the frosty fresh air and lunch (at own expense) in one of the local inns. Your guide will inform you of the possibilities. Then you’ll hear the jingling bells on the reigns as the sleighs line up across the field and your winter sleigh-ride begins! A stop for refreshments is made along the way where the horses rest and you have the possibility to try some Austrian specialities. Hopefully, it will be a day that you will remember long afterwards! Excursion destination may be altered due to snow conditions.

• Private driver-guide• Hotel pick-up and drop-off• Service charges, taxes & VAT

note: Warm clothing, gloves and warm shoes are essential for this tour.

Let us take you to the romantic village of Hintersee (25km from Salzburg). Here wild deer (approx. 100 – 150) come down to this point especially to be fed during the winter months (daily at 3 pm – if there is snow).

Here you can participate in and watch the local deer being fed. Then snuggle up in a local inn for a warming drink. Afterwards, there will be the extra opportunity to enter the village Puppet Museum before returning to Salzburg.

gRazWith a population of just over 250,000, Graz ranks as Austria’s second city, though it is often overlooked. The Styrian capital’s geographical situation, straddling the River Mur and surrounded by rolling hills, is undeniably attractive. The elegant palaces town houses and museums of Graz’s UNESCO-protected centre bear testimony to the city’s Baroque heyday, while a spate of cutting-edge galleries, notably the Kunsthaus Graz, point to the city’s present-day role as one of central Europe’s main venues for contemporary art.

cafe gerbeaudThe legendary Cafe Gerbeaud, in the heart of Budapest, is one of the largest, traditional, and most famous café-confectioneries in Europe. The café was established by Henrik Kugler in 1858 and expanded by its later owner, Emil Gerbeaud. The cafe shines with the nostalgia of its original days: magnificent chandeliers, marble tables, and brocade wall coverings that characterise the elegant, yet comfortable atmosphere of this tradional home. Gerbeaud’s specialities include famous cakes, such as Esterházy and Dobos cakes, as well as all kind of cream cakes, extravagant bakery goods and ice-creams.
