ART 135 Figure Drawing

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Prerequisites: ART 131 Corequisites: None Figure Drawing I is a studio course that introduces students to various approaches to drawing the human figure. Emphasis is placed upon direct observation using a live model with the focus being to create representational drawings while achieving correct form and proportions. Students will explore a variety approaches to drawing, which will include Line, gestures, short pose studies and long pose drawings. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate basic competence in developing drawings involving the human form. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement for the general education core requirement in humanities/fine arts. Course Hours per Week: Lab, 6. Semester Hours Credit, 3.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon successful completion of this course the students will be able to: a. Produce drawings of the human figure in a variety of poses, using a variety of media b. Observe, identify and gain competency in drawing accurate proportional relationships

related to the figure. c. Demonstrate basic modeling techniques associated with defining the human form. d. Understanding of figurative art, both historical and contemporary. e. Render in an accurate manner the form of the human body through the effective

use of contour line, value, proportion, and foreshortening. f. Critically evaluate their work and respond to the critical analysis of their work by others by:

1. developing personal artistic styles and; 2. demonstrating artistic growth and experimentation

CORE CONCEPTS EXAMINED:

A. Student’s skill levels in drawing the human form B. Understanding of human anatomy including the skeleton and muscle structure C. Understanding and stressing the general planes and masses of the model D. Understanding and stressing the general concepts of value and its various approaches to

create form and space E. Critical assessment their own drawings through one on one instruction and class critiques.
