APA Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) Scholars Award for Graduate
Students
Aim:
The APA Division 39 (Division of Psychoanalysis) Scholars Program for Graduate Students
is a new initiative designed to help foster intellectual curiosity and professional development
relevant to psychoanalytic approaches to clinical work, theory, and research. The aim of this
program is to promote learning about psychoanalysis, and to facilitate open dialogue and
exchange of ideas about the future of psychoanalytic thinking, research and practice in the field
of psychology and the role of psychologists in the future of psychoanalysis.
Application to the program is competitive and a limited number of positions are awarded
each year.
Successful applicants will be awarded 1) a stipend to support attendance at the Division 39
Spring Meeting, 2) ongoing mentorship, 3) opportunities to participate in a vibrant
psychoanalytic community, and 4) free subscriptions to a number of important psychoanalytic
publications and on-line archives.
Eligibility Requirements:
Graduate Students who have completed a minimum of one year of graduate training in Clinical
Psychology are invited to apply to the Scholars Program. Applicants will be selected based on
demonstrated interest in psychoanalytic theory and practice; strong academic and clinicalbackground; commitment to scholarly pursuits and research; and potential for future leadership
and contribution to the field.
Benefits:
Travel Grants. A stipend of up to $500 to support attendance at the Division 39 Spring Meeting.
Mentorship. Each Graduate Student Scholar will be matched with a program mentor. Program
mentors will be committed to meeting with their mentees at least once per month in order to
provide guidance to Scholars in the early stages of their careers and training. Division 39
Scholars and mentors will work together to develop an individualized plan to support the
individuals professional goals and interests. The specific content of these meetings is at the
discretion of each mentorship pair. Readings, case material, theoretical discussions, research

guidance, and mentorship regarding personal and professional struggles in becoming a
psychoanalytic theorist, researcher and clinician are among the many possibilities. Individual
requests for a mentor with a particular shared interest/focus (e.g. particular research, scholarly, or
clinical interest, specific psychoanalytic theoretical orientation) will be accommodated whenever
possible.
Free journal subscriptions to 1)Psychoanalytic Psychology (the official Division 39 journal),
2) theDivision Review Psychoanalytic Forum, 3)Insight (the online Division 39 Newsletter),
and 4)PEP-Archive: on-line access to the back issues of the major psychoanalytic journals
including: 1) The International Journal of Psychoanalysis, 2) The American Journal of
Psychoanalysis, 3) Psychoanalytic Dialogues, 4) The Psychoanalytic Quarterly, 5) Gender and
Psychoanalysis, 6) Contemporary Psychoanalysis,7) Psychoanalytic Study of the Child,and 8)
Journal of Infant, Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy

Reference Letters:
All applicants must arrange for a minimum of two letters of reference from faculty members or
clinical supervisors to be e-mailed directly to the Committee Chair, Jeremy D. Safran, Ph.D. at
[email protected] January 10, 2014. All applications will be reviewed
by the committee.
The final decisions will be made by February 21, 2014.
