and politician, prosecutor in the BostonMassacre trial, Massachusetts representativesigner o the Declaration o Independence,Massachusetts states rst attorney general, and associate justice o the MassachusettsSupreme Judicial Court; then by amilydescent to Charles P. Fisher, then the Estateo Charles P. Fisher.
Note: The casters correspond to an entry inPaul Reveres daybook (image above) datedJanuary 9, 1772, which records the makingand sale o a pair o casters to Robert TreatPaine. Fisher traced the ownership o thecasters rom the original entry in Reveres
book to Robert Treat Paines probate inventoryand through his amily line. Unmarked, thecasters passed through the amily or someyears separated rom the Revere associationuntil Fisher re-discovered the pair in hismothers pantry. Through comparison otype, style, and weight and investigation odocumentary evidence along with comparisonto other marked, engraved Revere silver in theamilys collection, he was able to conrm thatthis pair o casters were, in act, the Reverecasters made or R.T. Paine in 1772. Further
authentication was provided in 1990 by JanineE. Skerry, Revere authority and then assistantcurator at Historic Deereld, who examinedthe pieces and conrmed their authenticity, noting that, there are indeed many pieces osilver made in the shop o Paul Revere whichdo not bear his mark. The current weighto the casters corresponds to the weightdescribed by Revere in his entry (varying by3%, a variance that correctly accounts orwear and polishing over the course o 240years).

The ladys secretary and bookcase was a cultural badge signiying a Boston lady o reinement and education during the Federal period. Mary
Cleveland (Smith) Bryant (1784-1860) was such a lady. She had been well-educated as daughter o Rev. John Smith, a proessor o Ancient and
Middle Eastern Languages at Dartmouth College, and was widely read. It was probably purchased around the time o, or a ew years ater, her
marriage in late 1807 to John Bryant III (1780-1865). He was the son o John Bryant II, the Deputy Commissary o Military Stores at the Federal
Armory in Springield. The elegant bookcase provided space or the increasingly aordable books then available to educated Bostonians. It was also
designed to provide everything needed or letter writing to her increasingly dispersed amily.
The year ater the couples marriage on November 25, 1807, Bryant evidently urnished their Boston house, listing twenty-seven payments in his
inancial Waste Book under the category House Furniture. These included one or a Bedstead on July 5, 1808 to Bostons premier cabinetmaker,
Thomas Seymour.1 Under inancial pressure in 1808, Bryant shipped out on an adventure in the brig Mandarin or Canton, his irst to China. 2 Bryants
voyage and trading proved extremely proitable. Ater his return in 1809, he ormed a partnership with William Sturgis dba Bryant and Sturgis, whicheventually became one o Bostons most successul China trade irms. The couple lived initially in a ashionable home in Tremont Place, later on
Beacon Street near Charles Street.
Ater his return, Bryant made numerous additional purchases o house urnishings in 1810, including another rom Thomas Seymour or $39.00
or unspeciied urniture which he recorded on Dec. 27.3 This payment may have been or the present secretary and bookcase. However, Bryants
several voyages in this period are relected in sporadic and incomplete entries or household expenses. Other purchases rom Seymour and other
cratsmen probably went unrecorded. Surviving Bryant amily and business records do not include actual bills and receipts.
The secretary is one o at least our which employ glomis (reverse glass) painting in two shades o green with repeating Gothic arches and centering
stylized leaage.4 Details are picked out in ine black lines. This ancy painted work can be irmly attributed to John Ritto Penniman based on the very
high quality o work, and on at least two o his characteristic techniques aux-shadowing below and to the right o both leaves and arches which
simulate light cast rom the upper let; and detailed modeling ormed by two or more layers o ine black lines applied at right angles to each other,
also simulating depth and shadows. Penniman was a tenant in Thomas Seymours Boston Furniture Warehouse rom at least 1808-1810. The twocollaborated numerous times, most commonly or decoratively painted panels eaturing lowers, leaage, or sea-shells on work boxes and quartetto,
work and card tables.
Every aspect o the Bryant amily secretary relects Seymours habitual attention to detail and precise execution. Mahogany veneers are careully
selected o our dierent grain characters. Spandrels between gothic arches at the tops o the doors are beautiully aced with book-matched curly
satinwood and outlined with his typical very ine-gauge black and white stringing lines. Large drawer ronts are ramed with curly maple crossbanding,
each accented by sand-scorching one long edge to provide greater depth and modeling. Keyholes on doors and drawers are lined or aced with
bone shaped to three dierent patterns. Precisely executed small-scale bead moldings are employed on lower case edges, the rieze, as an astragal
molding on the glazed doors, on pilaster columns separating door panels and on the cornice. Molding miter joints are perect.
Drawer construction ollows Seymours typical habits, with ine-gauge dovetails and bottoms beveled on the edges to it into grooves in drawer sides
and ronts. Glue blocking on drawer bottoms along ront edges is o even size and evenly spaced. Glue blocks along the drawer sides are cut into
short, regular segments rom one continuous strip o pine, then butted, glued and cut o at an angle at the rear edge. Small interior and mid-casedrawers require no glue blocking.
The design o the cornice is particularly reined, with its central oval inlaid with curly satinwood and black stringing surround set into a stripe-igured
mahogany ground, its upper molded rame in the orm o a semi-oval, and elegantly shaped and molded inial support block above. The small turned
roundels applied at terminations o the hal -oval molding and on the leg blocks were employed requently by Seymour in this period. They relect
English Regency designs he began employing at about this period, and which increasingly dominated his work rom about 1808 to 1817. Seymours
use o lion-pattern hardware or the interior drawer pulls also ollows Regency period preerence.
An interesting and perhaps unique eature is the hinged lid which slants downward when opened to enable easier writing. This is supported at
both ends by lopers which also slant down and slide in slanted housings in the case. Seymours penchant or constant experimentation resulted in
enormous variation in his work. Except or sets and pairs, no two pieces it seems are alike. The Bryant secretary is no exception.
