What are the main causes for the air pollution?

• Factories

• Automobiles

• Energy sources

• Wild fires

• Volcano

• tornadoes

Page 5: Air & Noise Pollution

• Smog

• Acid rains

• Greenhouse effect

• Hole in the ozone layer

Page 6: Air & Noise Pollution

• It’s more dangerous than the outdoor pollution, because we do everything in enclosed environments where air circulation may be restricted.

• There are many sources of indoor air pollution: tabacco smoke, cooking and heating appliances, and vapors from building materials.

Page 7: Air & Noise Pollution

•Global warming

•Respiratory disease

•Plants die

Page 8: Air & Noise Pollution

-Some individuals are

much more sensitive to

pollutants than are

others.

-Air pollution can affect

our health in many ways

with both short-term and

long-term effects.

Page 9: Air & Noise Pollution

-Air pollution prevention

efforts of companies have

generally focused on waste

reduction, reuse and

recycling.

-So to solve these problems

and to get over them we

can change our lifestyles.

WHAT IS NOISE POLLUTION?

Sound that is unwanted or disrupts one’s quality of life is called as noise. When there is lot of noise in the environment, it is termed as noise pollution.

Sound becomes undesirable when it disturbs the normal activities such as working, sleeping, and during conversations.

It is an underrated environmental problem because of the fact that we can’t see, smell, or taste it.

World Health Organization stated that “Noise must be recognized as a major threat to human well-being”

Sources of Noise Pollution

• Industrial

• Loudspeaker

• Construction work

• Road Traffic

• Trains

• Aircrafts

• Radios and Microphones

• Agricultural Machines

• Defence Equipment

Effect on human health…..

• Auditory effects interfering with hearing; auditory fatigue and deafness.

• Physiological effects affecting biological functions; anxiety, neurosis, insomnia, dizziness,

nausea, fatigue, visual symptoms, hypertension, cardiovascular symptoms, liver changes,

nervous symptoms, changes in skin, fast irregular heart beats (tachycardia).

• Endocrine and hormonal changes relating to stress and noise levels. i.e. raised adrenaline and

cholesterol. Noise causes blood vessels to close cutting down blood supply to the fingers and

toes. Respiratory changes occur due to noise.

• Psychological effects; physical and mental fatigue, loss of concentration, lower efficiency,

reduced output, absenteeism, higher rates of accidents, behavioural changes, errors at work,

loss of sleep, psychosomatic disorders, diseases related to stress, mental illness, aggravation

of existing stress problems and mental illness, neurotic effects, rage anger, crime.

• Non-auditory effects interfering with social behaviour; problems with communications, sleep,

recreation, mental equilibrium (peace), and the ability to concentrate at work.

Noise can have a negative effect on humans, domestic

and wild animals, ecological systems, buildings and

other structures.

Effects of noise on wildlife

Reduced migration of birds and other animals.

Loss of food habitats if animals are driven away.

Animals in city zoos tend to become lethargic and

their health deteriorates.

Animals tend not to reproduce, which threatens

their survival.

Other effects include duodenal ulcers, atrophy of

the thymus gland, and changes to adrenal glands.

Effects of noise on structures

Physical effects from noise include: vibration to

buildings, damage to glass windows, plaster cracking,

damage to building foundations. Jet aircraft have

damaged roads and buildings.

Health Effects

• There are direct links between noise and health. Also, noise pollution adversely affects the lives of millions of people.

• Noise pollution can damage physiological and psychological health.

• High blood pressure, stress related illness, sleep disruption, hearing loss, and productivity loss are the problems related to noise pollution.

• It can also cause memory loss, severe depression, and panic attacks.

Solutions for Noise Pollution

• Planting bushes and trees in and around sound generating sources is an effective solution for noise pollution.

• Regular servicing and tuning of automobiles can effectively reduce the noise pollution.

• Buildings can be designed with suitable noise absorbing material for the walls, windows, and ceilings.

• Workers should be provided with equipments such as ear plugs and earmuffs for hearing protection.

Page 18: Air & Noise Pollution

Solutions for Noise Pollution• Similar to automobiles, lubrication of the machinery and servicing should

be done to minimize noise generation.

• Soundproof doors and windows can be installed to block unwanted noise from outside.

• Regulations should be imposed to restrict the usage of play loudspeakers in crowded areas and public places.

• Factories and industries should be located far from the residential areas.

• Community development or urban management should be done with long-term planning, along with an aim to reduce noise pollution.

• Social awareness programs should be taken up to educate the public about the causes and effects of noise pollution.

Page 19: Air & Noise Pollution

Noise pollution often persists because only fiveto ten percent of people affected by noise willlodge a formal complaint.

Page 20: Air & Noise Pollution

Many people are not aware of their legal right to quiet anddo not know how to register a complaint.

conclusion

If everyone would help to save the earth we would

live in a safe environment!
