Enterprise Architecture – EA PracticeFrameworks or Methodologies

There are many different approaches to choose from when selecting options to tackle a problem.

For example, Projects can use Agile, Waterfall, RAD, Lean, Six Sigma, etc…

Enterprise Architecture approaches are also many, Frameworks include:

• ZACHMAN – The John Zachman Framework (1980’s)• TEAF – Treasury Enterprise Architecture Framework• IBM Method – the IBM process (which we modified for IBM GS Australia)

• DoDAF – US Department of Defence Architecture Framework • TOGAF – The Open Group Architecture Framework• MAGENTA – Methodology for Agency Enterprise Architecture • TRIOLE – A Fujitsu methodology, primarily used in Japan• PEAF – Pragmatic Enterprise Architecture Framework

Frameworks, Methodologies, Processes and Tools

Choosing what fits best in which circumstances: Many business and technology executives often ask the same questions about frameworks, methodologies, processes and tools.

“Where can I find the best ones for me?” “What will work with my industry vertical?” “Am I using the best tools available?” “Is this method suitable for smaller projects or local, national and cross-functional or multinational programs, and how do I find out if it fits our needs?”

Find a working list of over 952 Frameworks (to date) being compiled by Pragmatic EA at - http://www.pragmaticef.com/frameworks.htm

Thanks to a piece of work started by Kevin Smith, founder of PragmaticEA.com, a growing list of short descriptions, Google global trends and links to the various Framework home pages, can be found in one place for easy research or reference. As always, how you leverage the information is up to you.

Defining Architecture

Acts as both a link and a chain.Architecture links Business Strategy to IT Delivery Capability. It informs people, processes, tools and techniques to improve solutions. It guides individual projects for the benefit of the overall enterprise. It provides end to end visibility across all business functions.

Enterprise Architecture Considerations Enterprise Architecture (EA) informs strategic decision making at the Agency level.

This is separate from segment architectures which align to various individual business needs and solution architectures which detail the exact functions and components to fulfil process.

The different focus areas can best be illustrated in the following graphic:

So what is PEAF?

Pragmatic Enterprise Architecture Framework

PEAF is a vendor and consultancy independent, technology neutral, Enterprise Architecture Framework which allows organisations to kick start or re-start an EA initiative and provides a comprehensive set of Products and Processes of everything required to hit the ground running.

PEAF bridges the gap between minimal "EA Frameworks" which do not provide a complete set of what is required, or huge monolithic “EA Frameworks” that are often complex, difficult to understand and hard to implement or use effectively.

Evaluating PEAF – a comparison

To help organisations decide which EA Framework is best suited for their needs, Pragmatic EA Ltd. conducted an evaluation and analysis of 4 well known frameworks, across various selected areas.

Each framework was categorised using the following criteria: -

PEAF is a Top Down Framework:• Driven from business or organisational vision / mission / plans / strategy• Business Modelling is based on the Business Motivation Model Approach –

See: http://www.businessrulesgroup.org/second_paper/BRG-BMM.pdf

PEAF has a clear orientation for change:• Human Resource related – including KPI’s, position descriptions, etc. • Overall ongoing process with a continual communication component

PEAF Addresses Enterprise Debt:• Compliance / Deviation related approach• Tracked across ICT at an Enterprise Level • “Borrowing” against Technology future
