TECHNOLOGY IN SPORT


One of the most sophisticated and enthusiastic adopters of sports analytics in Australia is the Australian Football League (AFL). The code is believed to generate some of the largest sports data sets in the world. Every game is monitored and analysed courtesy of data sources including: ~10,000 team level match statistics, quarter by quarter,

zone by zone; ~100 player level match statistics relating to kicks,

handballs, smothers, corralling, chasing and closing; match-up data; second-by-second GPS tracking during training and in-game

for all 44 players, to understand average and maximum speed, direction and acceleration;

coded video which provides footage from multiple angles across the ground.

Through data advisory services being provided to Port Adelaide Football Club, an understanding of the current state of the sports analytics industry has been obtained. A lack of maturity in the industry compared with other, more established industries. AFL clubs in particular are swimming in data, but starving for insights. Partnership with PAFC allowing us to service this need, which has substantial overlap with others across the sporting industry.
