    2Introduction

In the name of Allah. the Beneficent, theMerciful All praise is due to the AlmightyGod, Allah.WepraiseHimandseekHishelpandforgiveness.AndweseekrefugeinAllahfromtheevilsofourownselvesand fromourwickeddeeds.WhosoeverhasbeenguidedbyAllah, there is none tomisguidehim.AndwhosoeverhasbeenmisguidedbyAllah,nonecanguidehim.AndIbearwitness that thereisnoothergodexceptAllah, alone, withoutpartnerorassociate.AndIbearwitnessthatMuhammadisHis servant andmessenger.MayAllah theExaltedbestowHis peace and blessings on theProphetMuhammad, upon his good and pure family as well as upon all of the noble Companions and uponthosewhofollowedtheminrighteousnessuntiltheDayofJudgment.

It is intended through this translationofAlKhutootAl'Areedah topresent to readersofEnglish, bothMuslims and nonMuslims accurate information about the faith and tenets of the Shi'ite sect knownastheTwelveImamersorJa'faris.

It isessential for theSunniMuslim toknow the factof theShi'itedeviation from thestraightpathofIslamtaughtbytheProphetMuhammad( )andhisnobleCompanions(r.a.a.).AlKhutootAl'AreedahclearlyandbrieflypresentstheactualteachingsoftheShi'itesingeneral,andtheTwelveImamersinparticular.ThereaderwillderivefromthetextanunequivocalunderstandingoftheShi'itesectandwilldistance himself from them and their beliefs. He will realize that there can be no reconciliation norreunification of the Sunnis and the schismatic Shi'ites until and unless the latter renounce theirperversetenets.TheymustreturntothepureunadulteratedteachingsofIslamheldandmaintainedbyAhlusSunnahwallama'ah(theSunnis).

Unfortunately, it is a common view in the West that the Irani Shi'ites and their socalled "Islamicrevolution" with all its attendant turmoil, injustice and barbarism, are representatives of Islam. It ishoped that the nonMuslim reader of thisworkwill come to perceive the abysswhich separates the

  • Shi'ites fromtheMuslimmajority,andthathewillno longercondemnallMuslims for theactivitiesofonedeiantsect.

Furthermore, they reject the authentic compilations of the sacredtraditions, suchasthoseofthetwogreatimamsAlBukhariandMuslim.Theyconsiderallbutafewofthe Companions of the Prophet Muhammad to be apostates, while they elevate their Imams to apositioncomparableothatofthegodsofancientmythology

    4THECALLTORECONCILIATIONOFTHEVARIOUSSECTSANDSCHOOLSOFTHOUGHT

BringingMuslims closer to eachother in their thoughts, convictions andaims is oneof the greatestobjectives of Islam, and a most vital means of achieving Muslim unity, power, revival andreconstruction.Whenthecalltosuchapurposeisfreefromulteriormotivesandislikelytoyieldmorebenefit thanharm, then itbecomes incumbentonallMuslims to respond to itand tocooperate witheachothertomakeitasuccess.

Discussion of this call had increased in recent years, and had such a pronounced effect that itattracted the attention of AlAzhar University, one of the greatest religious institutions of those whoadheretothefourschoolsofjurisprudenceofAhlusSunnahs(SunniMuslims).AlAzharfullyadoptedtheideaofbringingMuslimgroupstogetherandpursueditbeyondthelimitsof itsauthoritywhichhadbeenestablishedinthetimeofSalahuddinandmaintainedupuntil thepresent.AlAzharoversteppedits bounds in its desire to explore and to accommodate various schools of thought, the foremost ofwhichistheschooloftheShi'iteTwelvelmamers.(5)

AlAzhar is, at this point, in the early stages of this mission.(6) Therefore, this topic is timely andworthyofresearch, studyandexpositionbyeveryMuslimwhohasknowledgeoftheissue, inall itsdetails and with all its ramifications. Since religious issues tend to be controversial in nature, theyshould be handled with wisdom, insight and straightforwardness. The researcher must also beenlightenedbyAllah'sguidanceandbeimpartialinhisjudgmentinorderthathisresearchmayachieveitsclaimedobjectivesandyieldsatisfactoryresults, ifitbesowilledbyAllah.

It may be remarked that with any contentious issue involving more than one party, chances for itssuccessfulresolutionarecorrelatedtotheresponsivenessofthepartiesinvolved.Withrespecttothequestion of bringing AhlusSunnah and the Shi'ites closer to each other, it has been noticed that acentrewasestablishedforthispurposeinEgypt, financedbythegovernmentofaShi'itecountry.Thisopenhanded Shi'ite government has honored us with its generosity while it deprived itself and theadherentsof itsownschoolof thoughtof itsgovernmentalbounty Ithasalsobeennoticed that itdidnot build such a lavish establishment for the call to "reconciliation" in Tehran, Qum, Najaf, Jabal`Aamil, oranyothercentreknownforitspropagationoftheShi'iteschoolofthought.'

TheseShi'ite propaganda centres published during the past years books thatmake one's skin crawlandone'sbody tremble from theshockofwhat iswritten therein.Reading themutterlydestroysanyidea we may have entertained of developing mutual understanding and closeness with their Shi'iteauthors and the like of them. Among these publications is a book entitled AzZahraa, by Shi'itescholarsofNajaf, inwhichtheyallegedthatAmirulMu'mineen`UmaribnuKhattaab, thesecondcaliph, was plaguedwith a disease curable only by thewater ofmen (i.e., semen)! This filthy slander wasnotedbythescholarAlBasheerAllbrahimi, theSheikhoftheAlgerian`ulamaa, duringhisfirstvisittoIraq.A filthy soulwhichproduces suchwickedness is in a greater needof the call to understandingandreconciliationthanweare.

The fundamentaldifferencebetween themandus is rooted in their claim that theyaremore loyal toAhlulBait, and in the fact that they hide from us their malice towards and grudge against theCompanionsoftheProphet, onwhoseshoulders Islamwasestablished.Theirhatredreachedsuchapointthattheycanutterthefilthywordsagainst`UmaribnulKhattaabthatwerenotedabove.

IsitnotfairtosaythattheyshouldhaverestrainedtheirmaliceandhatredagainstthefirstImamsofIslam.and that they shouldhaveappreciated thenoble standof ahlusSunnah towardahlulBait, that

  • standwhichneverfellshortinofferingduehomageandreverencetothefamilyoftheProphet?Ordotheyconsiderustoberemiss innot takingthefamilyof theProphetasgodstobeworshippedalongwithAllah,astheydo?

Without a doubt, responsiveness to each other is essential if two parties are to achieve a mutual"comingtogether",reconciliationandunderstanding.Thismutualresponsivenesscanonlycomeaboutiftherearesincereeffortsonbothsidestoachieveit.

Asstatedabove, thereisa"reconciliation"centreinEgypt,aSunnicountrytherearealsopropagandaofficeswhichwagehostilecampaignsagainst thosewhodonot favoursuchcentres.Onemight wellquestion theabsenceofsuchcentresor their like inanyShi'itecountry.OnealsomayquestionwhyAlAzharUniversityhasincludedinstructionintheShi'iteschoolofthought,whiletheSunnischoolsofthoughtarestilllockedoutoftheShi'iteeducationalinstitutions.Ifthecalltoreconciliationisrestrictedtooneoftheconcernedpartiesalone,thentheeffortsspentonsuchacallwillbefutile.

Finally, one may question the value of beginning the process of reconciliation by attending todifferences of a minor or secondary nature, while fundamental differences have not yet beenaddressed.(7)

    5ISLAMICJURISPRUDENCE

Thejurisprudenceof theSunnisdiffers fromthatof theShi'iteseven in the fundamentalsuponwhichthelawisbased.Yetunlessanduntilthefundamentalsareunderstoodandendorsedbybothparties, anduntil there isa favorableresponseto this fromthereligious institutionsofbothsides, itwouldbeuselesstowastetimedealingwithissuesofaminororsecondarynature.

In fact, it isnotmerely in the fundamentalsof jurisprudence that therearedifferences, butalso, andmore importantly, in the fundamentalarticlesof faithofeachparty, even in theirdeepest roots andorigins.

    6TheQuestionOfTaqiyyah

One of the main obstacle to their receiving a positive response from us is their tenet of taqiyyah(deception), by theapplicationofwhich, they reveal to us other thanwhat theyhave in their hearts. The simpleminded Sunni is deceived by their pretentious display of `the desire to overcome ourdifferencesandreachacommonunderstandingbetweenusandthem.Infact, theyneitherwantsuchathingnorapproveofit.Theydonotstriveforit, butratherleaveittotheotherpartytocomethefulldistance to theirposition, withoutexertinganeffort tomakeanymove from their side.Even if thoseShi'iteswhopracticetaqiyyahweretoconvinceusthattheyhavemovedafewstepsinourdirection, then themultitude of Shi'ites, be they ordinary people or the scholarly elite, would stand apart fromthose who adopted the ruse of objectivity towards us, and they would not recognize them as theirrepresentativesthisbecausetheiractualbeliefdoesnotpermitthemtoreconcilethemselveswithus.

    7Shi'iteAttackOnTheNobleQur'an

The Qur'an should be the comprehensive reference for both Sunnis and Shi'ites, and a means ofbringingaboutunityandmutualunderstanding, butithasbeenmisinterpretedbytheShi'itesandgivenameaning other than that which was understood by the noble Companions who received it directlyfrom theProphet, andother than thatwhichwasunderstoodby the Imamsof Islamwho received itfromtheverygenerationamongstwhomtheQur'andescendedbywayofDivineRevelation.

OneofthemostfamousandrespectedShi'itescholars, fromNajaf,MirzaHusainbinMuhammadTaqiAnNawariAtTabarsi, wrote in 1292A.H. the book faslulKhitaab fee Ithbatti Tahreefi KitaabRabbilArbaab(TheDecisiveSayontheProofofAlterationoftheBookoftheLordofLords).InthisbookhecompiledhundredsoftextswrittenbyShi'itescholarsindifferenterasallegingthattheQur'anhasbeentamperedwith,thattherehavebeenbothadditionstoitandomissionsfromit.

AtTabarsi's book was printed in Iran, in 1298 A.H., and its appearance attracted much attention, frustratingtheintentionofcertainShi'ites that theirdoubtsabout theauthenticityof theQur'anshould

AmongtheproofsofferedbyAtTabarsiinhisattempttoshowthattheQur'anhadbeenaltered, wasaquotation fromwhat theShi'ites consider to beamissingpart of theQur'an, calledby themSuratulWilaayah (see below). It mentions the granting of wilaayah (sovereignty) to `Ali(8) as follows: "Obelievers, believe in the Prophet and the wali, the two whomWe sent to guide you to the straightpath..."[suratulWilayyah]

    9REJOICINGOFTHEMISSIONARIESANDORIENTALISTS

Upon the publication of the book FaslulKhitaab over eighty years ago, there was great rejoicingamongsttheenemiesofIslam, inparticular, themissionariesandorientalists.Theylikedthebooksomuch that they decided to translate it into their own languages. It is no wonder, since it containedhundredsofliessuchasthosementionedabove, alongwithslanderousfabricationsagainstAllahandthe choicest of His creation, the Holy Prophet of Islam (upon whom be peace), and against thevenerableCompanions(mayAllahbepleasedwiththemall).(13)

  • There are two clear texts from AlKaafi of AlKulaini, which elucidate the Shi'ites' perverse positionregardingtheQur'an.Thefirstreads:

IheardAbuJafar (uponwhombepeace)say: "Noneof thepeoplehasclaimed thathecollected theQurancompletelyas itwas revealedexcepta liar.Noonecollectedandmemorized theQur'anas itwasrevealedexcept`AlibinAbiTaalibandtheImamsafterhim.(14)

EveryShi'iteisrequiredtobelieveinthistextfromAlKaafiasanarticleoftheirfaith.Asforus,AhlusSunnah,wesaythatinfacttheShi'iteshavefalselyattributedtheabovetexttoAlBaaqirAbuJa'far.Theproofofourposition is that `Ali,during theperiodofhiscaliphate inKufah, never resorted to orappliedanyversionof theQur'another than thatwithwhichAllahhad favored theCaliph`Uthmanbythedistinctionofitscollection, publicationandpopularizationandbyits legalapplicationinall Islamiclands for all time up to the Day of Judgment. If it were true that `Ali had a different version of theQur'an he surely would have applied it in making legal rulings, and he would have commanded theMuslimstoabidebyitsinjunctionsandguidance.Clearly,sincehewasthesupremeruler,nonewouldhavechallengedhisauthoritytodothis.

Furthermore, if indeed `Ali had a different version of theQur'an and concealed it from theMuslims, thenhewouldhavebetrayedAllah,HisMessengerandthereligionofIslambysodoing.AsforJaabirAlJu'fiwhoclaimsthatheheardthatblasphemousconversationfromtheImamAbila'farMuhammadAlBaaqir, itmustbenotedthatalthoughtheShi'itesconsiderhima trustworthynarratorof traditions, thefactisthatheiswellknownintheSunnischoolsoftheologyasaliarandforgeroftraditions.AbuYahya AlHammani reported that he heard the Imam Abu Hanifa saying, "Ataa' is the best i.e., themost truthful and precise in reporting from amongst those I have come across in the field oftransmittingtraditions,whileJaabirAlJu'fiisthegreatestliarIhavecomeacrossamongstthem."(15)

ThesefabricatedShi'itetextswhicharefalselyattributedtotheImamsofAhlulBaitareoffairlyearlydate. TheattentionofthegovernmentsofallMuslimnationsmustbedrawntothedangerousanddistortedviewsofthe(Socalled)Shi'iteTwelveImams,orJa'farisect.Itistheirviewthatallgovernments fromthedeathof theProphetuntilnoware illegitimate, except for thatof`AlibinAbiTaalib. It is thereforenot permissible for any Shi'ite to be loyal to those governments or sincere in dealing with them.Indeed, theymustengage in flatteryandhypocrisy, in accordancewith their tenet of taqiyyah.Theyconsider all past, present, and future governments in theMuslimworld to be established by forcibleseizure, and therefore illegal. According to them, the only legitimate rulers are the Twelve Imams, whethertheyruleddirectlyorindirectly, andallotherrulers, fromthetimeofAbuBakrand`Umaruntilthe present time, are con sidered usurpers, and oppressors of the people. Thus, any person would be counted as an enemy of the Prophet's family merely by his givingprecedence of rank to Abu Bakr AsSiddeeq and `Umar AlFarooq, and by his acknowledging theirpositions as imams. The expression "AlJibt watTaaghoot" is used by the Shi'ites in the prayer ofimprecation which they call "Du'aa Sanamay Quraish" (imprecation against the two idols of theQuraish). They mean by these expressions, the two caliphs Abu Bakr and `Umar (may Allah bepleased with them). This vicious Shi'ite prayer of imprecation is mentioned in their book MiftahulJinaan it reads: "O Allah, bestow Your blessings upon the Holy Prophet Muhammad and upon hisfamily, and curse the two idols of the Quraish, their AlJibt watTaaghoot, as well as their twodaughters..."TheyarereferringtothetwoMothersoftheBelievers,Aa'ishahandHafsah,thepureandnoblewivesoftheProphet(mayAllahbepleasedwiththem).

    14SHI'ITES'WAYOFTHINKINGUNCHANGED

TheShi'itescholarsandclergythroughout thespanof Islamichistoryhave takenadisgracefulstandagainst the two Companions and appointed ministers of Allah's Prophet, Abu Bakr and `Umar, andagainstothergreat IslamicpersonalitiessuchastheCaliphs, governors, generals, andwarriors in thesacredcauseofIslam.Nowwehaveheardtheirpropagandist, whowasresponsibleforDarutTaqreeb(the centre for the promotion of "reconciliation" and a "coming together" of Sunnis and Shi'ites),claimingbeforethosewhowereunabletocriticallystudy these issues themselves, that thesebeliefswere held in the old days, and that the situation now is different. This claim is plainly false andmisleading, because the books which are taught in all of their educational institutions contain all ofthese tenets and hold them as essential and rudimentary elements of their faith. Furthermore, thebookspresentlybeingpublishedby thescholarsof Iran,Najaf andMount `Aamil are evenmore evilthan the older Shi'ite publications, and more detrimental to the cause of reconciliation and mutualunderstanding.

To further clarify this we mention as an example one person amongst them who never ceasesannouncing day and night that he is a proponent of unity and reconciliation, Muhammad binMuhammad Mahdi AlKhaalisi. He is known to have many friends in Egypt and elsewhere whobroadcast the same call for taqreeb, and who work for it among the AhlusSunnah. This supposedadvocateof"unityandunderstanding"goessofarastodenythatAbuBakrand`Umarpossessedthegraceof Iman (faith). In his book Ihyaa'ushSharia feeMadhhabishShi'ah (Revival of the Law in theShi'iteSchoolofThought),hesays:

Even if they [Sunnis]argue thatAbuBakrand `Umarwereamong thepeopleofBai'aturRidwan(22)withwhomAllahwas pleased, as shownby the referencemade to them in theQur'an: "Verily Allahwaspleasedwiththebelieverswhentheysworeallegiancetoyou(Muhammad)beneath the tree",(23)we say that if Allah had said: "Verily Allah was pleased with those who swore allegiance to youbeneaththetree",thentheversewouldindicatethatAllah'spleasureincludedeveryonewhomadethepledge of allegiance. Since the verse says: "Verily Allah was pleased with the believers when theysworeallegiance...",thereisthereforenoproofinthisversethatAllahispleasedwithanyoneexceptthosewhohaveacquiredpureiman.

AlKhaalisi is insinuatingby this thatAbuBakrand `Umarwereof thosewhohadnotacquired imanandwereexcludedfromthepleasureofAllah.(24)

This blasphemy was stated in the magazine Risalatullslam (TheMessage of. Islam), published byDarutTaqreeb. In an article entitled Min Ijtihaadati Shi'a Allmamia (Some Independent Shi'iteOpinions), theheadof theShi'ite supremecourt inLebanonquoted theMujtahid scholarMuhammadHasan Allshtiyani: If the Prophet made a stipulation regarding the divine legal rulings on whatinvalidatesablution, ortherulingspertainingtomenstruationandpostnatalbleeding, itisimperativetobelieve him, and the application of these rulings is binding upon us. But if the Prophet made astatementregardingtheunseen, forexampleonthecreationoftheheavensandearth, orthevirginsofParadise and its palaces, then it is not incumbent or binding upon one, evenwhen it is known of asuretythatthestatementhasproceededfromtheProphet.

The exposition has become somewhat lengthy although great care has been taken to restrict thesubject matter wholly to quotations selected from the Shi'ites' most authentic and dependablepublications. 24FriendshipAndAffectionAmongTheRightlyGuidedCaliphs

Dueto the loveandrespectwhich thecommanderof theFaithfulAlibinAbiTaalibheld forhis threebrethren caliphs, he named three of his sons after them. He also gave his eldest daughter UmmKulthoom in marriage to `Umar IbnulKhattaab. In addition, we ses that `Abdullah bin la'hr bin AbiTaalib,('Ali'snephew)namedoneofhissonsAbuBakr,andtheotheroneMu'aawiyah.Mu'aawiyahbin`AbdullahnamedhissonafterYazeedbinMu'aawiyahbinAbuSufyaan,whowasconsideredtobeofgoodrepute,accordingtothetestimonyofMuhammadbinAlHanafiyyahbin`AlibinAbuTaalib.

    25WhyWeMustRidOurselvesOfAnyConnectionWithTheShi'ites

If therepudiationanddenunciationwhichShi'itesarenowaskingofus,as theprice for reconciliationbetweenus and them, includes thosewhom they have demanded it include (AbuBakr, `Umar, etc.)then he whom they consider to be their first Imam, `Ali bin Abi Taalib, should be consideredblameworthybythem, byvirtueofhisnaminghissonsafterAbuBakr,`Umarand`Uthman, andbyhisgivinghisdaughters inmarriageto`Umarand`Uthman.Furthermore, theymustconsiderMuhammadbinAlHanafiyyahaliarwhenhetestifiedtothegoodcharacterofYazeed, iftheyaccepttheclaimof`AbdullahbinMutee, asupporterof IbnuzZubair, thatYazeeddrank liquorandneglectedprayer, andexceeded the bounds established byAllah'sBook.Muhammad bin AlHanafiyyah defended Yazeed, saying have notwitnessedwhat youmention. Since the foregoing is what the son of `Ali bin Abi Taalib has testified to in favor of Yazeed binMu'aawiyah, thenwheredoeshis fit in relation to theposition theShi'iteswantus toadoptwith themagainstYazeed's father,Mu'aawiyah, and against thosewhoare better than himand better than thewholecreation(42), that is,AbuBakr, `Umar, `Uthman,Talha,AzZubair,Amrubnul'Aws,alongwiththerestofthegreatCompanionswhomemorizedandpreservedforusAllah'sBookandtheSunnahofHisMessenger, andwhowerethearchitectsoftheIslamicworld.

The price demanded of us by the Shi'ites for a reconciliation with them is exorbitant. We loseeverything by agreeing to it, while we gain nothing in return. 8. "Wali" has several meanings, the relevant ones in this context being "the closest friend andassociate"and"theoneuponwhomhasbeenconferredlegalauthoritytorulevicegerent".Thepersonintended by this term in the quoted passage is obviously `Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), theProphet's cousin and the fourth caliph. By forging such a verse the Shi'ite are attempting to givecredence to their perverse view that the only legal caliphwas `Ali and that the right to the caliphatebelongs toAhlilBait (themembers of the Prophet's family) alone. This they tried to do by claimingdivine revelationasasourceof thisbeliefof theirs,so itwasexpedient to forgeaQur'anic verse, inordertosupporttheirfalseposition.

    34. The concept of the Muslim nation separating into seventythree sects, is taken from authentictraditions such as the following related by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): "TheMessengerofAllahsaid:'TheJewsseparatedintoseventyonesects, andtheChristiansintoseventytwo, andmynationwilldivideintoseventythreesects."ThiswasrecordedinthecompilationsofAbiDawood, AlTirmidhi, Ibn Majah and others, with an authentic chain of transmitters. There is alsonarrated, in thecompilationsofAbiDawood,AdDarimi,Ahmadandothers thestatement: "Seventytwo [of the seventythree sects of the Muslim nation] will be in the fire, and one only will be inParadise it is the Jama'ah [i.e. AhlusSunnah wal Jama'ah]." In yet another narration the, finalstatement is: "All of these [sects]will be in the fire except one it is the Jama'ah." Finally, there isanother narration which states: "The Companions asked: 'Which sect will triumph [i.e., achievesalvation]?'TheProphetreplied: 'Thesectwhichadherestothat[setofbeliefsandpractices]whichIandmyCompanionsadhereto."' Itshouldbeclear fromthese traditions that theonesect, outof theseventythree, which is to gain salvation, is the AhlusSunnah, the only segment of the Muslimcommunitywhichstrictlyadheres to thatwhich theHolyProphetandhisnobleCompanions adheredto.
