On behalf of the Board of Directors for the Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community, Inc. (P.E.C.), I am pleased to present to you this 2017 edition of the Official Guide for the 28th Annual Zora Neale Hurston™ Festival of the Arts and Humanities (ZORA!™ Festival).

Personally, I am very proud to be our organization’s new president. I have been in business in Historic Eatonville for more than two decades and I established my business in this community specifically because of its history and cultural heritage.

The program for ZORA! Festival 2017 is truly outstanding. For our students, pre-K - grade 12, there will be a broad range of offerings, including arts and crafts activities, science demonstrations, book giveaways, special workshops, and, for a 4th year, a ZORA! STEM Conference for Middle School Students. Also, we are presenting, in partnership with Rollins College, a first-ever national “Communities Conference,” in recognition of the 130th anniversary of Historic Eatonville’s Incorporation. Then, there’s our inaugural ZORA! Golf Tournament AND, for our organization, yet another “1st” -- A Benefit Performance on behalf of the ZORA! Festival. With funding from the Ford Foundation and other New York-based underwriting, Woodie King, Jr.’s New Federal Theatre will present Zora Neale Hurston: A Theatrical Biography starring Elizabeth Van Dyke.

Indeed, we have a program for all ages to enjoy. Please plan to spend as much time as possible with us this January 21-29. ZORA! Festival is our way of drawing the world’s attention to this precious Town, our organization’s signature event as we strive to achieve of our ultimate goal -- Preserving the Eatonville Community.

Conference Background: In recognition of the 130th anniversary of the Incorporation of Historic Eatonville, known popularly as “the oldest incorporated African American municipality in the United States,” the ZORA! Festival has organized a first-ever national conference to explore issues and concerns which occur, over and over, in communities of color and to determine ways of improving the quality of life for those persons who reside in them.

Conference Structure: In 50-minute plenary and 75-minute breakout workshop sessions, conferees will interact with nationally-recognized thinkers; local and national scholars and local and national community activists on topics, including personal finance, “options in education,” community economics, and cultural vibrancy. The Friday schedule will be devoted to “Communities of Color and Their Policing.”



A special Saturday morning session will develop action plans with an eye to “report card” sessions at ZORA! Festival 2018, January 25 - 27.

Winfred “Chad” McKendrick, author of Livin’ Beyond Your Paycheck and with 2 decades+ experience in field of financial services, will share principles and practices which actually work, no matter the amount of money you control.Alvin Cowans, President/CEO, McCoy Federal Credit Union, will discuss the arena in which the commercial bank operates and the arena in which the credit union operates and will identify important factors each consumer should consider.

(B) STEM Education & The ZORA! STEM Initiative, The Path Forward for Employment Success

Henry Okraski, PE and CMSP and Founding Member of the National Center for Simulation, will provide an overview of the state of STEM education in the U.S., focusing on the systemic challenges [specifically the leaky pipeline] the country faces.

Candace Finley, Science teacher at Robinswood Middle School, Orange County (Florida) Public Schools (OCPS) and lead teacher for the ZORA! STEM Initiative [ a program of the Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community] will discuss her classroom methods and experiences in working with students of color. She will show examples -- the Solar Cockroach and others -- on which these students have worked.

(C) How the Arts and Culture Can Serve as Mitigating Factors within the Community

Carlton Turner, Executive Director of Alternate ROOTS, a 4 decades-old collective of artists, based in the South, will identify past examples of how artists-activists have impacted under-served communities and will advance some of the current ROOTS strategies.

Evelyn Martinez, a current member of the Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs Council, will explain the process that Orange County Government uses to provide cultural tourism funding to arts organizations and will identify some of the challenges she believes exist in expanding the pool of groups of color making application for these funds.

Tanya Debose, Executive Director, Independence Heights Redevelopment Council, located in Houston, will reflect on the role historic preservation has played in her community’s effort to protect its heritage and culture.

(A) Economic Development Models, Beyond Theory

Walter Greason, Ph.D., a faculty member in the Department of History and Anthropology at Monmouth University and the Founder of the International Center of Metropolitan Growth, will discuss his real-world experience in identifying economic development strategies that can work in communities challenged by economic stagnation.

Ed Jones, 2-term Mayor of Grambling, Louisiana, will walk through the process his community has used/is continuing to utilize as it develops its Legend Square Project, currently under construction.




(B) A Focus on Public Education -- Can We Expect a Successful Outcome?

Letecia Foster, Principal of the Hungerford Elementary School, located in Historic Eatonville, will discuss how she has raised the school’s rating from a grade of F to a grade of C and how she envisions advancing her students’ achievements.

John Wright, Area Superintendent, for Orange County Public Schools, and the administrator responsible for Hungerford Elementary, discusses the concept behind the Community Action Team, its advantages and challenges, and how it is being implemented in the re-building of the Hungerford Elementary School.

(A) “Grassroots” Gardening and Its Potential to Address Health Disparities

Members from the Yards & Gardens Club of Historic Eatonville will discuss how they organized themselves under the umbrella of the Association to Preserve the Eatonville, how they have sustained themselves over a 5-year period, and will “show-and-tell about” produce from their gardens

(B) Environmental Justice or “Just Ice”

Leslie Poole, Ph.D., a faculty member in the Department of Environmental Studies at Rollins, will provide a historical context for the environmental movement within the United States and will identify several major challenges the movement recognizes it will need to address in the coming years.


Justin Kii Huenemann, Executive Director, Notah BegayIII Foundation, Santa Ana Pueblo, will focus on examples of the long-running challenges the Native American Community continues to face as it seeks to conserve its lands, heritage and culture.


(C) “What’s Going On” on Today’s College Campus

Emily Russell, Ph.D., a faculty member in the Department English at Rollins and Oriana Jimenez, the College’s Title IX Officer, will discuss recent findings on their campus.

Davita Bonner, Director of Career Services at Bethune-Cookman University, will share her perspective, reflecting upon decades of experiences at this historic Black institution.

A.J. Chisolm, a 3rd-year undergraduate student at the University of Central Florida, will address the topic from his perspective as a full-time student, who is working, while attempting to maintain a commitment to community involvement.

Objective -- To advance a discussion which can contribute to an understanding of how the current criminal justice

system works in these communities by

(A) Providing a context for the subject, utilizing research that documents the country’s history in terms of the police and the residents living in these communities; and by(B) Featuring presenters -- scholars, representatives of the criminal justice system, local elected officials, and citizen activists from the non-profit sector – who will bring forward as complete a picture as possible to depict the current circumstances facing these communities and the nation.

Utilizing a case study approach, Ms. Jackson will report on the success the non-profit she heads has experienced in working with ex-offenders. She will provide statistics on recidivism and show the relationship with gainful employment and not returning to the penitentiary.

3:20 - 4:20The Role of Citizen ActivismFeatured Presenter: Ash-Lee Henderson, Project South, Regional Organizer

Ms. Henderson will present the “Black Lives” perspective as these communities of color grapple with the frequent occurrence of loss of life of African American males at the hands of the police. 4:30 – 4:45Session Closing Comments: Julian Chambliss, Ph.D., Rollins College & N.Y. Format: In a plenary session, participants who have attended the previous 2 days of the conference, will reflect on what has transpired and determine how they might return to their communities and share what they have experienced. Depending on the interest of these participants and others, and what occurs in community settings over a March - October 2017 time frame, the Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community, will consider reserving time at ZORA! Festival 2018, during its January 25 -27 schedule, for sessions devoted to Communities Conference II.
