The Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media celebrated its 20th anniversary presentation by honoring Katie Couric, anchor and managing editor of the “CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.” The an-nual award for lifetime achievement is named for USA TODAY and Freedom Forum founder Al Neuharth, a South Dakota native and 1950 graduate of USD. More than 4,000 people attended the event at the USD DakotaDome. South Dakota Public Broadcasting televised the event.

The American Indian Journalism Institute hosted nine Native American college students from nine tribes in seven states. Students earned college credit in courses taught by a visiting faculty of academics and profession-als. Six of the nine graduates went on to paid summer internships in daily newsrooms.

The Native American Journalism Career Conference at Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills welcomed 121 Native American high school and college students who were introduced to journalism skills and practices during the 10th annual event. Professional journalists from around the country mentored students in small groups and instructed them about journalism. The conference is funded by the Freedom Forum and organized by the South Dakota Newspaper Association.

Al Neuharth Media Center at The University of South DakotaThe state-of-the-art Al Neuharth Media Center houses the media and journalism organizations on USD’s Vermillion campus, including the Freedom Forum’s Diversity Institute and its Native American programs, South Dakota Public Broadcasting, South Dakotans for Open Government, the Department of Contemporary Media and Journalism, The Volante, which Neuharth edited as a student, campus radio station KAOR and television station KYOT.
