DePauw returns home on Saturday, October 11, as it hosts Birmingham-Southern College in the 102nd Old Gold Day game. Kickoff from Blackstock Stadium is set for 1 p.m. The Tigers are 3-1 on the season after last Saturday’s 55-13 loss at 13th-ranked Millsaps. For the second straight year DePauw opened the season with three straight wins after a 52-17 home win over Anderson in the season opener followed by SCAC victories at Centre (27-14) and at home against Sewanee (27-20). DePauw is receiving votes toward the American Football Coaches Association top 25 poll. Birmingham-Southern, in its second year of football after a 68-year hiatus, is 1-3 on the cam-paign. The Panthers opened with a 12-6 win over Campbell before dropping contests to LaGrange (34-31), Rhodes (35-7) and Trinity (48-20). DePauw leads the series, 1-0, after last season’s 28-24 win in Birmingham. Spud Dick tossed the game-winning, 21-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Mulligan with just 44 seconds left. SCOUTING BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN Birmingham-Southern is in the midst of NCAA Division III provisional membership after moving from NCAA Division I status. Quarterback Joe Thigpen directs the offense by completing just under 54 percent of his passes for 444 yards and four touchdowns with a 139.4 efficiency rating. Thigpen is also the team’s top rusher with a 47.8-yard average per game and has rushed for five touchdowns.

Tay Walker is the team’s top receiver with 13 catches for 234 yards. Walker and Luke Chapman have each caught two touchdown passes. Defensively, Brad Stockdale leads with 26 tack-les, while Micah Baker adds 23. Trae Strain, John Bailey and Tyler Worley each have been in on 20 stops. Bailey paces the squad with 6.0 tackles for loss including three sacks, while Stockdale has the team’s only two interceptions.

DEPAUW UPDATE After opening the season at 3-0 for the second straight year, the Tigers suffered their first setback last Saturday at Millsaps as the 13th-ranked Majors won, 55-13. Quarterback Spud Dick has completed just under 58 percent of his passes for 923 yards with 10 touchdown passes and a 148.23 efficiency rat-ing. His top receivers include Alex Koors with 15 catches for 394 yards and five touchdowns followed by Brayden Dahlstrom with 11 catches for 125 yards and Brad Paus with 10 grabs. Jon Ellis paces the rushing attack with an average of 71.2 ground yards per outing. Ryan Preuss leads the defense with 32 tackles followed by Kyle Sherer with 26 and Tarren Collins and Marc Hoeppner with 21 apiece. Stacy Crawford leads the way with two of the team’s five intercep-tions. Tyler Doane paces the squad with 3.5 tackles for loss and Michael McNelis is the team leader with 2.5 sacks.

REVIEWING LAST YEAR’S GAME DePauw quarterback Spud Dick drove the Tigers 66 yards in six plays and tossed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Mulligan with 44 seconds left giving the Tigers a 28-24 win over Birmingham-Southern at Regions Park. DePauw improved to 4-1 with the win, while the Panthers dropped to 0-3 in their first season of football since 1939. Dick completed 5 of 6 passes on the drive including a key 26-yarder to Chris Gasbarra on third down. The Tigers held a four-point lead and the ball before a fumble at their own 41 gave Birmingham-Southern the ball with just under three minutes re-maining. Three plays later quarterback Joe Thigpen scampered 30 yards for the Panthers’ first lead of the game, 24-21, with 2:05 left. DePauw’s Curtis Moore scored two first-quarter rushing touchdowns of 2 and 9 yards to give the Tigers a 14-0 lead before Birmingham-Southern closed the halftime margin to 14-10 on Alex Street-man’s 31-yard pass from Joe Thigpen and Jonah Fryfogle’s 34-yard field goal. The Tigers extended their lead to 21-10 on their first series of the second half as Dick tossed a 39-yard scoring pass to Jeff Bonner. The Pan-thers answered with a 13-play, 81-yard drive which culminated in Thigpen’s 1-yard run. Moore finished with a career-high 182 rushing yards in his first collegiate start, while Dick com-pleted 25 of 38 passes for 254 yards. He connected on 9 of 11 in the second half. Mulligan hauled in nine for 91 yards, while Bonner caught six for 73 yards. Thigpen rushed for 33 yards and threw for 230 to lead the Panthers. DePauw totaled 478 yards of offense including 224 on the ground, while Birmingham-Southern finished with 353 yards. Ryan McElwain led the DePauw defense with nine tackles, while Tarren Collins, Tyler Doane and Jevon Pruitt each had eight. The Tigers sack Thig-pen seven times with Doane totaling a team-high 3.5. Brad Stockdale, Trae Strain and Justin Dunn each had nine stops for the Panthers.
