MUSICJune 7

MOUNTAIN DULCIMER IMMERSIVE WORKSHOP FACULTY INSTRUCTORS: WANDA DEGEN AND DEE DEE TIBBITS, two of Michigan’s folk treasurers

The mountain dulcimer is a simple 3 or 4-stringed instrument with a unique fretboard that is easy for the novice to successfully begin playing songs with just one lesson, and fun for all levels of musicians to explore its many possibilities. Considered an American folk instrument, the mountain dulcimer is associated with the southern Appalachian mountains and is related to some European instruments from Medieval times. Participants in this immersive progam will be treated to a close-up concert presented by the instructors and will then break into two groups based on skill level: one for beginners and one for those with some prior experience. Each group will have two master sessions in the afternoon led by one of the instructors, and then all participants will come together for a closing session in which solos or duets may be presented in a round-robin fashion by those who wish. You do not have to own an instrument--mountain dulcimers will be available for students to use. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet people, to learn a new instrument or to reconnect with your dulcimer if you’ve been neglecting yours, and to play music with others. Instructors Wanda Degen and Dee Dee Tibbits are both active performers and educators and perennial favorites at Michigan’s folk and dulcimer festivals. They both share a love of Appalachian, Celtic and Great Lakes music and are mutual admirers of each other’s recordings. COURSE FEE - $75

The Transom Audio Narrative Short Course is a traveling workshop that will return to Interlochen College of Creative Arts for a second year in 2014. This workshop provides participants not just an introduction to the basics, but it delves intensely into some advanced elements of radio story planning, structure and writing, fieldwork and digital audio editing. All participants in the program will produce a four minute profile of a creative resident of northern Michigan.
