THANKSGIVINGBeing grateful is said to be the key for an abundant

life. This month we celebrate a tradition dating back to the early settlers of our country. It is a time when all immigrants and natives alike can show appreciation for the chance to live in a country founded on principles of opportunity and freedom. Sure, its a great time to get together with family and friends or to watch football while getting ready for the holidays. This year, Chanukah begins the night before Thanksgiving and it appears the holiday season is well under way.

Speaking of holidays, our feature story this month has some great gift giving ideas. Kavita Channe is our extraordinary cover girl, showing off some fabulous jewels and clothes for the naughty and nice. Kavita is also a fan favorite on the sidelines as well. Check her out on facebook or follow her on twitter.

Another holiday I encourage everyone to remember is Veterans Day on the 19th. If there is one group deserving of our gratitude, it is those who serve, served or paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Too many times we take for granted our ability to celebrate every occasion without concern for our security. So, nd some way to show your appreciation and respect for the men and women who served our nation.

A friend recently started a website to honor vets one last time. Here is the site, should you be inclined to support the cause. www.honor ightsouth .org.

Lastly, it will be fty years since the John F. Kennedy assassination on the 22nd. JFK was a President whose ideals transcended time, regardless of party af liation, and his inspiration took us beyond our imagination as a nation. It is my hope those in Washington will rekindle his spirit and work together to keep our country great and drive us to limitless opportunities.

A Heros HomeStandard Paci c Homes and Helping-a-Hero reward an Army veteran

When Army Staff Sgt. Brian Mast decided to settle in Broward County after returning home, he did so because of happy memories from childhood vacations in Fort Lauderdale. He also did not want to deal with the icy surfaces up north, having lost both legs in Afghanistan.

Coming to the rescue was national non-profit Helping-A-Hero and Standard Paci c Homes, which broke ground last month on a $450,000 home in their Watercrest community in Parkland. For a $50,000 mortgage, Sgt. Mast will be given the home, customized for his special needs.

Helping-a-Hero donated $100,000, a specially adapted federal housing grant covered $67,000, and Standard Paci c Homes donated the land. The rest comes from in-kind donations by Standards suppliers and vendors.

When we started talking to the vendors about this, they were all excited to help, says Dan Grosswald, president of the South Florida division of Standard Paci c. I met [Sgt. Mast and his wife] and they were very thankful. But we should be thanking them, not the other way around. This has been very rewarding for everyone participating.

Helping a Hero (HelpingaHero.org) has funded 90 homes in 21 states for veterans so far, says National Chairman Meredith Iler. Two more homes in Florida will be awarded this month at the organizations national gala in Houston Nov. 12.

School for ThoughtHCA and NSU announce a new kind of health center

In what he called a transformational day in our universitys history, Nova Southeastern University president George Hanbury recently announced the anchor tenant for the schools new Academical Village: A Jeffersonian concept of scholars and students living and working closely together to combine theory and practice.

The anchor tenant for this educational Utopia will be a 100-bed HCA teaching hospital, which will operate in conjunction with Novas medical school. It will be the foundation for NSUs Academical Village, which will ultimately include more than 3 million square feet of space. The teaching hospital will tie in the research and academic component into our scope of care to patients, says Michael Joseph, President and CEO of HCA East Florida, which operates 14 South Florida hospitals.

Asteroid AncestryFort Lauderdale astronomer cracks a 200-year-old puzzle

It may not be the most life-altering discovery, but Fort Lauderdale astronomer Clifford Cunningham has uncovered the true creator of the word asteroid.

Cunninghams research revealed that William Herschel, the famed court astronomer for King George III,

did not coin the term as our science textbooks claim. Rather it was the son of a poet friend of HerschelsGreek scholar Charles Burney Jr.who invented the word.

Asteroid actually means star-like in Greek. Cunningham, a world authority on

asteroids, uncovered two letters at Yale University that indisputably proved that Burney Jr. came up with

the term. Cunninghams ndings will affect future science textbooks and is already being reviewed by the editors of

Encyclopaedia Britannica. We have a big revision of our asteroid article in the works, says Erik Gregersen, senior

editor for astronomy and space exploration at the Encyclopedia. To be accurate, the etymology of the

word might have to credit this other fellow.

Shorter Voting Lines? Broward to spend $8 million on voting gear

Anyone who had to endure the excruciating lines during the last presidential election knows why Broward was ridiculed nationwide. In some cases, voters had

to wait four, ve and even six hours to cast their ballots. Not a good way to run a democracy.

The good news is that county elections supervisor Brenda Snipes recently disclosed a plan to spend $8 million on new voting equipment. The original proposal called for $16.8 million, but the county balked at the price, having already spent millions on touch-screen voting machinesonly to have to return to paper ballots amid controversy over the accuracy of the machines.

This time, Snipes negotiated with the county and cut her request in half, with plans to use part of the money on 600 new DS-200 ballot scanners, 2,000 new voting

booths and 38 ballot printers to be used in the early voting sites. Voters will see a difference, says Snipes. Last year, many led into packed polling places only to nd a single ballot scanner servicing the entire crowd.

Keeping PACE with the Eco TimesCounty adopts a new energy-saving program

The problem with installing energy ef cient devices is that they take so long to pay for themselves. A new national program has been crafted to solve that problem for homeowners.

Broward County has now approved the so-called PACE program (Property Assessed Clean Energy). This allows property owners to install energy ef cient improvements such as insulation, solar panels and high-ef ciency air conditioners, and incorporate the cost into their yearly property taxes. The program relies on private companies to provide the nancingi.e. your mortgage holderwhile the county is responsible for collecting and repaying the money.

The only glitch is that it may make it harder to sell your house, since the new owners will have to continue paying for your new appliances with their ongoing property taxes. Mortgage holders arent thrilled, either. As an alternative funding source, the county will work with Energy Fund Florida and EcoCity Partners.

Fewer Puppies? New permit puts breeders on a short leash

Broward is raining cats and dogs these days, spawning not only too many abandoned pets, but numerous adoption agencies as well. To stem the tide, the county commission has passed a new law requiring anyone who wants to breed to purchase a permit from the county. Among other restrictions, breeding rights will be denied to those known to have abused animals.

There is some debate over the new regulations in the local breeding community. The law, meant to restrict irresponsible reproduction, may end up just penalizing those who breed conscientiously. Those intended to be punishedoperators of so-called puppy millswill probably skirt the new law. Nor does it necessarily protect our four-legged chums from irresponsible pet owners who still abandon animals when it suits them. Still, one paw at a time.

Urban Kayaking Deep in the heart of urban Broward County lies adventure on The Middle River

    By Ivette Figueroa

The day wouldnt be called pleasant by any beach-goer: Overcast skies and a steady breeze. But it was perfect for paddling around Wilton Manors, where I arrived with a group

of friends to rent watercraft from the Atlantic Coast Kayak Company.

Wilton Manors, located between Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park, is known as the Island City since it is surrounded by a 7-mile loop of the Middle River. Although the river can look more like a canal running through a middle class neighborhood, there are mild tidal currents and a winding course that let you know its the real thing.

Atlantic Coast operates from a wooden dock at Richardson Historic Park, where you can rent kayaks for a 90-minute loop journey. It seemed like just long enough for a bunch of rst-timers. Proprietor Kenny Myers, an avid sherman and outdoorsman, offers tours of the natural life on the Middle River. We opted instead for a solo journey, with a

crash course on the basics of kayaking and a laminated map of the route.

Almost immediately we took a wrong turn and had to double back, laughing at our inability to read a simple, non-iPhone map. As my paddling became less choppy, we started to look for the critters that Kenny told us about.

Much of the trip borders on parkland with towering mangroves that cage in sections of the water with their tangled roots. Fish teemed in the brackish waters, breaking the surface every so often. Ospreys and herons patrolled the grassy banks and cormorants sunned their dark

feathers on branches of low-hanging trees. As we paddled on, we played a game of who could spot the most iguanas. Dozens of these vibrantly colored reptiles stalked the edges of the river.

About halfway through the 7-mile loop we stopped at Island City Park Preserve for a picnic lunchand to feed some ducks that followed us from the river. Keen to reach a hidden lagoon Kenny told us about, we set off again with renewed vigor. Our passageway to this enclave was narrow, crowded with knotted mangrove roots and glistening spider webs. We had already ducked under bridges and railroad tracks, but this was something elsea limbo under the metal pipes of a bridge that sealed off the area. But we made it, true adventurers, to our own slice of secret Broward! Q

Home sales in South Floridaand across the stateare becoming the economic version of the Man of Steel. Not even interest rates moving faster than a speeding bullet seem able to put a chink in their armor.

August marked the 20th consecutive month that the price of a single-family home was higher than it was the same month the previous year. The median price for a single-family home in South Florida jumped 21 percent year-over-year to hit $254,000, according to Florida Realtors data. Prices on condos and townhomes in August told a similar story of resilience and rebound, rising 35 percent to $139,000.

But August also marked the seventh consecutive month that interest rates on the all-important 30-year xed mortgage jogged up.

In fact, as of August, interest rates had soared more than a percentage point since January, fueled largely by Ben Bernanke and other Fed of cials hemming and hawing that the Fed couldand eventually will have tostop its $85 billion a month bond-buying program.

When the Fed does stop snapping up mortgage-backed and Treasury securities, bond values will fall and interest rates will rise some more. In todays post-traumatic-recession environment just the mere mention that the Fed may taper these asset purchases is enough to send the Dow toppling and mortgage rates surging.

In South Florida, meanwhile, the housing market continues to shine, far below the daunting macro-economic storm clouds.

It is still a very good time to buy, says Doug Leever, mortgage sales manager of Miramar-based Tropical Financial Credit Union. People who have their nances in order are ready to buy.

Demand for new mortgages at Tropical Financial has nearly doubled since last year, Leever says. And he doesnt see that stopping even though he does expect, rates to continue to trickle up.

Sustained demand despite more expensive borrowing costs? It makes sense when you put todays market in context.

Rates and home values are still well below where they were at the market peak in 2006. In 2006, for instance, the average mortgage rate was 6.4 percent and the median price of single-family home in South Florida was hovering around $400,000. Today, rates and home prices remain about a third lower.

I think some buyers are feeling like they missed the boat, says Joanne McKeage, an agent with Coldwell Banker in Fort Lauderdale. But home prices are still under-valued and prices are going to go up. Interest rates are still historically low. Q

South Florida pleasures:In three words: sports, golf, the beach. Im a native of Las Olas Boulevard and spend a great deal of time shopping and dining there.

Why transit hooked me: I was raised using the transit system. In college, I found my way around Tampa using transit and became an employee of the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority. I took the job because I understood its value as a transit user.

My climb up the career ladder:I came up the ranks through the industry association called Advancing Women In Transportation (WTS), which is all about transforming the transit system through the advancement of women. I graduated from their leadership program and became a national board member. It formed my future.

My couldnt-miss opportunity: I was hired by a 30-year-old Fort Lauderdale company called Limousines of South Florida because of my experience in the business. They needed help restructuring the company for possible acquisition. Keolis Transit, based in France, chose us to make its rst foray into the U.S. market in 2011 and the rest is history.

The rewards of my Alliance membership: I can honestly say that after speaking with the Alliance, I recognized it was the organization that would be the key to our success in having an impact on the transit system in Broward County.

Urban farming Neighbors meet nature in Ft. Lauderdales new community garden

    By Ivette Figueroa

TThe concept of urban agriculture has already sprouted in cities like New York, Los Angeles and even Miami Beach, where citizens can grow their own food in neighborhood plots. In Broward County, however, the idea has not taken

root, perhaps because we havent had the kind of urban density that robs residents of green space.

That has now changed, with the launching of a new urban garden on a small plot of church land in the heart of Fort Lauderdales Flagler Village. The brainchild of community organizer Chad Scott, The Flagler Community Garden now has a home on Northeast 3rd Avenue between 4th and 5th streets.

The idea for the garden began in 2009, when a coalition of Flagler Village residents received permission from a local developer to cultivate a vacant lot. In early 2011, however, the land was foreclosed on and cleared.

I was inspired by that and was thinking how I could restart that garden, says Chad, president of the nonpro t Flagler Garden Project. I was an auditor for seven years, but I wanted to do something fun and new. So I went into real estate so that everything I did could also bene t the community, says the Broward native who also lives in Flagler Village.

Long before the Garden Project, Chad was a champion of civic duty, participating in neighborhood cleanups and city events. He used local connections to nd a new home for the garden. I connected with churchesone of which told me they had a vacant house with a plot of land. That was the First Evangelical Lutheran

Rows of potted plants line the entrance to Flagler Garden.

Chad Scott, President of the Flagler Garden Project

Church of Fort Lauderdale and Pastor Paul Pfadenhauer. Chad gathered volunteers and sponsors, and hosted

charity events such as The Night Owl Market in Junea craft fair co-sponsored by the Flagler Garden and FAT Village Artwalk. With additional funds donated by Whole Foods and other local businesses, the project broke ground in September.

When nished, the garden will incorporate 79 4x4-foot raised garden plots, along with paths, compost bins, rain barrels and hanging garden areas. A refurbished building on the plot will offer events and workshops.

Even though we have a very small plot (65,000sq ft.), the space is maximized, says Chad. Some people dont have backyards and this is another way to get outdoors and connect with your neighbors and nature. Of the 79 plots, 10 will be earmarked for nearby schools and colleges for gardening and environmental classes.

We hope that our continued support of Flagler Garden will provide the residents of Fort Lauderdale with a space of their own to relax and know their neighbors, while also educating the children of the city on the beauty of seeing food grow and eating healthier, says Whole Foods spokesperson Marcea Cazel.

The Art of Museum MakingTwenty-seven years ago, Mindy Shrago decided she wanted to create an art museum for the children of Broward County, especially those who lived in the west. It is now considered one of the top fewif not the bestof its kind in the nation.

    By JULIE KAY

Its a Sunday morning at the Young at Art Childrens Museum, and a string of parents bearing gifts starts streaming in the door for the bevy of birthday parties that will ensue all day.

Mindy Shrago, the creator, founder and CEO of the museum, is there to greet them all with her ever-present smile. With seemingly boundless energy she ies from room to room, chatting up employees and student volunteers while giving visitors a tour of the 55,000-square foot museum she created from dust starting 27 years ago.

After a magazine photo shoot, Shrago meets a potential well-heeled donorthe cousin of U.S. Sen. Debbie Wasserman-Schultzto give his family a personal pottery lesson. Then shes off to a lunch with the head of the Association of Childrens Museums, whos in town for a tour of local institutions.

It may be hard for visitors to believe a self-described young hippie artist and her mother dreamed up the vision for a unique museum that draws visitors from around the countryand then singlehandedly raised the $26 million of funding, donor by donor. But Shrago is nonchalant about that. She steers all conversations back to the museum, and her lifes passion: Art.

We never had a strategic plan, shrugs Shrago, 60. We just shot from the hip. We believe arts are involved in every aspect of your life.

Shrago was a successful Fort Lauderdale pottery artist when she and her mother, Esther Shrago, hatched the idea for a childrens museum dedicated to the arts. The Miami native had won best of show at the prestigious Las Olas Art Festival and was an acclaimed artist in the 1970s and 1980s. But she wanted to do more. She, along with her mother, wanted to instill her

passion for art in children, and to spread the gospel of the healing nature of art to disadvantaged youths.

In the mid 1980s, mother and daughter traveled the country visiting childrens museums, only to discover there were none that focused solely on art. So in 1987 the two incorporated Young at Art and two years later opened their rst museum in a 3,500-square-foot storefront donated by The Fountains shopping center in Plantation.

For Shrago, a Hollywood resident, it was important to locate her museum in suburban west Broward, home to tens of thousands of families but short on culture. Married to then Broward Circuit Judge Jay Spechler, Shrago had some powerful friends in Broward County, which helped. She had served as her husbands campaign manager when he ran for state representative in 1974, and found she had a gift for fundraising.

We had political ties, she acknowledges. We were able to get a lot of in-kind donations. I love fundraising... talking about my passion.

Says Spechler: Ive always been involved in politics and she has as well. Shes known and met everyone in the community and has been a part of Broward County her whole life along with me. Weve integrated art and politics.

Shragos first fundraising success was cold-calling Plantation-based American Express. She secured a check for $10,000. At the time, the arts were being slashed in public schools. Shrago began to feel it was her mission to replace whatever arts the children were losing in school with her museum.

Arts are what teach you about every subject matter, she says. They integrate math, science, history. Kids can learn about measurements from a sculpture.

Shrago was also an early advocate of recycling and ecology. She made sure to incorporate lessons on these topics in her museum, always in a fun way. Another steadfast goal was to focus on teaching art to the kids, not just showing it. By 1991, the museum began offering studio art classes for children, taught by professional artists. Scholarships, underwritten by corporate and foundation partners, were offered to children in need.

A key early supporter of Shragos mission was Broward County Property Appraiser Lori Parrish. Basically, Mindy

and her mom created the concept of Young at Art at Mindys kitchen table, recalls Parrish. I think it just evolved from there. Mindy is a free-spirited liberal soul and shes always been interested in helping children from lower socio-economic backgrounds become exposed to the arts. I

just think Mindy wanted everyone to love art like she did.

Parrish said it took a while for corporate donors to warm up to Shrago. Parrish encouraged her to start a Women of Vision fundraising auxiliary, asking 100 women to give $1,000 a year, with Shrago matching the donation four-fold. The Women of Vision auxiliary was formed in 1995 and was highly successful. Parrish would also nudge corporations like Wheelabrator and Broward philanthropists like Maya Ezratti, Director of Community Relations at GL Homes, to become donors.

In 1998, with a grant from the Broward County Cultural Division, Young at Art moved to its second locationa 23,000-square foot storefront in west Davie. In keeping with the mission of encouraging kids

to create art themselves, the museum featured lots of hands-on arts and crafts projects. In one area, kids could learn about various countries like Japan by seeing a short lm, sitting in a pagoda, and then creating their own morikami art. In another area, kids would become archaelogists and dig for relics in the sands of Egypt with tiny shovels. They would get their passports stamped in each country.

The museum started garnering national attention. In 2002, Young At Art was named Best Childrens Art Museum in the Nation by Child magazine. It was also about this time that Shrago embarked on her mission to bring what she sees as healing art to disadvantaged youths. She began an artreach program where artists would teach art to kids at a homeless shelter every day after school. Now, a new Arthouse is under construction in a low-income duplex in the Sistrunk neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale. We want to make sure were touching every community member, Shrago says. It takes a village, remember.

But Shrago still wasnt satis ed. She wanted a permanent home for Young at Art, an utterly green building designed by her and a hand-picked architect, one that would incorporate generous space for exhibits, artist studios, pottery rooms and outdoor kiln, a computer animation lab,

Mindy Shargo is the creator, founder and CEO of the Young At Art Museumvoted the Best Childrens Art Museum in the Nation by Child Magazine.

recording studio and computer lab for graphic design and gaming, birthday party rooms, a volunteer lounge area and a cafe and gift shop.

The solution came in 2006 when Shrago signed a partnership with Broward County to build a Young at Art Museum that also housed a Broward County Library Childrens Reading Center. An exhaustive capital campaign raised more than half of the $21 million needed, while Broward County contributed $5 million. The Knights Foundation Arts Challenge awarded Shrago a $500,000 grant.

The 11-acre building opened at State Road 84 and Northwest 121st Avenue in Davie in 2012. Mindys mother retired shortly afterwards. The partnership with Broward County Libraries created a synergy that merged literacy with art, Shrago says. And the library is open seven days a week, so there is no dead space on weekends.

Shrago used her charm to persuade experts from some of the nations nest museums, including The Getty, Museum of Modern Art in New York, Noguchi Museum, Museum for African Art, Chicago Childrens Museum and Brooklyn Museum of Art, to convene in a symposium to help cook up a master plan of exhibits for the museum. Janet Rice Elman, executive director of the Association of Childrens Museums, called the efforts of Shrago and her mother simply astounding.

To have founders who opened a museumand this is now the third locationand see it through three different capital campaigns is very unusual, says Elman. I cannot think of another example in the eld of founders who founded and re-founded a museum. I think these two women had sheer determination and unbelievable vision and drive to push this forward. After touring the newest incarnation of the museum recently, Elman called it fantastic I love the way the library is nestled in the middle of the museum. Libraries are traditionally community gathering places, so it all makes sense.

If there is one person not surprised by Shragos accomplishments, its her husband who is now a mediator. Art has always been Mindys passion,

says Spechler. She eats, drinks and sleeps Young at Art. I supported her 100 percent.

Indeed, the entire family is passionate about art; the couples two children, Ali and Zack, are both artists. Shrago and her husband have a sizeable art collection in their Hollywood Lakes house as well as in their Manhattan home.

A workaholic who wakes up at 5:30 a.m. daily, Shrago has few interests outside of art. She recently vacationed in Italy with her husband, where she viewed plenty of artwork, and spends her days off at art museums. She recently visited the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. A friend texted her to see where she was.

Im at a museum, she responded. Art heals. Q

case with Executive Chef Joshua Hedquist of The Butcher Block Grill.

Formerly of The Max Group, Big Time Restaurant Group and Todd Englishs De Campo Oesteria, Hedquist believes in more than just providing phenomenal cuisine. His commitment to providing guests with quality, naturally-sustainable and locally-farmed food is part

of a movement of conscientious restaurateurs and chefs offering a responsible and high quality product.

Few restaurants can make the claim that the meat and poultry served are antibiotic- and hormone-free, and humanely raised on a vegetarian diet. In laymans terms, this means that the food is natural in the most basic sense, raised free of anything arti cial. The seafood is likewise wild-caught and locally sourced, while the produce is grown pesticide-free on Florida farms. The Butcher Block

mozzarella appetizer. Its fun to watch and worth the 90 seconds from prep to plate. The server starts with the cheese curd, adds 190-degree water and hand pulls the mozzarella until a velvety texture is reached. Ive never seen this anywhere else in my travels. Yellow and red heirloom tomatoes, micro basil, organic olive oil and vin cotto (translated as cooked wine) make a mozzarella-lover want to keep this plate all to themselves. Share it though, and order the super lump crab cake as well. The crust on the outside is weightless and the crab is select.

The meat choices are plentiful. Sizes and cuts range from a twelve-ounce New York Strip to a twenty-four ounce cowboy Rib-Eye. For those with an appetite theres a thirty-two ounce Porterhouse steak, and if you enjoy let mignon, a six and ten ounce center cut is available. All steaks are served with red wine demi (sauce), hand cut malt vinegar steak fries (of course) and butcher butter (a rich butter made from the trimmings of the steak); the chef loves to use as much of the animal as possible, and the butcher butter compliments the outstanding avor of the meat. You will leave nothing on your plate. It is rst-class all the way.

The Veal Tomahawk Chop had me from the moment I set eyes on the plate. The large onion ring wrapped around the bone is accompanied with grilled asparagus, roasted garlic asiago mashed potatoes (divine!) and touched with saltimbocca sauce. This rst cut of the loin chop was juicy and tender, and the taste astonishing. And I refused to share the crispy onion ring even though it could have served three. Some things in life are just meant to be yours alone.

South Florida public relations, advertising and social media marketing rms know a few simple rules for website engagement: Content must be constant, current and on topic.

What does this mean? If you want your blog to get indexed by the search engines (a process called search engine optimization, or SEO) and then found and read by prospective clients, your content must be

Constant. You must blog or refresh your content areas all the time. Blogging and website management dont exist under some set it and forget it marketing practice. Once a week is the minimum to keep the search engines happy. Twice a week or more is even better.

Current. It should be up to date with the latest news relevant to your industry. If you notice that the news is reporting that people are searching for a popular new line of purple peaches, then your boutique specialty food market had better be blogging about purple peaches, and then sharing those posts on your

Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

On topic. On the other hand, if you run a South Florida law rm or a national accounting practice, or an upscale shopping mall, then your audience likely isnt coming to your site to learn about purple peaches. But they will be coming to your site or one like it for information on legal or accounting issues, or for news, trends or inquiries about the latest fashions.
