Passion Sunday (Fifth Sunday in Lent)1030am 7 April 2019 AD All Age Worship

“Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day.  He saw it and was glad.”

So the Jews said, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?”

Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself...

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamationAnd take me home what joy shall fill my heartThen shall I bow in humble adorationAnd there proclaim my God how great Thou art

- 2 -The Collect: WE beseech you, Almighty God, mercifully to look upon your people: that by your great goodness they may be governed and preserved evermore, both in body and soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.Almighty and everlasting God, who hates nothing that you have made, and forgives the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

New Testament Reading: Hebrews 9:11-15But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual Song: The risen ChristO Breath of God come fill this placeRevive our hearts to know Your graceAnd from our slumber make us riseThat we may know the risen ChristO Word of God so clear and trueRenew our minds to trust in YouAnd give to us the Bread of LifeThat we may know the risen Christ

O love of God so unrestrainedRefresh our souls in Jesus' nameLet us reflect Your sacrificeThat we may know the risen ChristMay God the Father God the Son

And God the Spirit make us oneIn holiness let us uniteThat we may know the risen Christ

The Gospel: St John 8:46-endHear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St John. All Glory to you O Lord.

Jesus said, “Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God.  The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?”  Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honour my Father, and you dishonour me. Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”  The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon!  Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’  Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?”  Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’  But you have not known him.  I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word.  Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day.  He saw it and was glad.”  So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?”  Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”  So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

The Talk

- 8 -

All We do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Father,

trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body and our souls washed through with his precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

The Communion

- 7 –(we kneel to pray)

All glory be to you, our heavenly Father, who, in your tender mercy, gave your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christto suffer death upon the cross for our redemption;who made there by his one oblation of himself once offereda full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfactionfor the sins of the whole world;he instituted, and in his holy gospel commanded us to continue,a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again.Hear us, merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that, by the power of your Holy Spirit,we receiving these gifts of your creation, this bread and this wine, according to your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution,in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood;who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks;he gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

All Amen.[a moment of silence]

Let us pray. All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy

kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Agnus DeiAll Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

have mercy on us.Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

have mercy on us.Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace.

- 4 -The Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father;through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Maryand was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Father, we give you thanks and praise through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things;who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour.By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh;as your Son, born of the blessed Virgin,And now we give you thanks because you have given us the spirit of discipline,That we may triumph over evil and grow in grace,As we prepare to celebrate the paschal mystery with mind and heart renewed. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven,we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:
