In 1527, after a long marriage to Catherine of Aragon (Spain), King Henry VII only had one surviving child, Mary Tudor. Henry believed that he had to have a male heir. The Catholic Church does not permit divorce, but Henry wanted a male heir. So Henry asked the Pope for an annulment, or cancelation of the marriage. The Pope refused to give Henry the annulment. Catherin of Aragon The king was furious that the pope wouldnt give him the annulment so King Henry passed a series of laws that put the English church in HIS (the kings) hands as the leader (not the pope). So in short, the king created The Church of England (also called the Anglican Church) in order to get a new wife. In 1534 Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy, which made King Henry the head of the Church of England. The Church of England was almost identical to the Catholic Church, but just had the King at the head of it.
