Welcome!

As we prepare for the Stanford Jazz Festival each year, I love to catch up on the musical progress of the many artists who have participated in the Stanford Jazz Workshop (SJW) programs over the past 44 years. I’m always impressed not only by the level of success that so many of our alumni achieve, but also by the ways in which they contribute to the growth of music in general. I’ve long suspected that when pop musicians want to really deliver on their recordings, they call in the jazz artists.

Donny McCaslin, who performed at the 2015 Festival and who taught at Jazz Camp, has been pushing the jazz envelope in astonishing ways. But it wasn’t until the release earlier this year of David Bowie’s final album Blackstar, which featured Donny and his band, that the scope of Donny’s musical influence became clear.

Similarly, longtime SJW family member and alumnus Ambrose Akinmusire received a great deal of well-deserved attention for his recent releases on the Blue Note record label. And

then when Kendrick Lamar’s genre-crossing album To Pimp a Butterfly took the 2016 Grammy awards by storm, a huge part of its success was the sounds of jazz contributed by Ambrose and many other jazz artists.

Ambrose and dozens of other great musicians will continue to create new music with us this summer at the Stanford Jazz Festival. Along with other longtime SJW trailblazers Julian Lage, Taylor Eigsti, and Tupac Mantilla, Ambrose will perform with vocal innovator Bobby McFerrin in Bing Concert Hall, in a one-of-a-kind performance you simply won’t hear anywhere else. As you’ll see in the following pages, the lineup for the 2016 Stanford Jazz Festival is full of groundbreaking artists such as Terence Blanchard, Billy Hart, Camila Meza, Gilad Hekselman, Ethan Iverson and others.

As Cuba opens up, we continue to celebrate our longtime partnerships with Cuban musicians. We welcome back Carlos D’l Puerto, the legendary bassist and co-founder of Irakere who first came to SJW in 1999. Also returning this summer: Yosvany Terry and Dafnis Prieto, who first visited the USA as teenagers when they came to SJW in the late 1990s. Yosvany, who just finished his first year as director of the jazz ensemble at Harvard University, will perform with his outstanding NYC based quintet; and Dafnis, now teaching at Miami’s Frost School of Music, will perform as part of our multi-national India Jazz Journey with George Brooks and Kala Ramnath.

The entire season is full of innovative music across many styles of jazz, and we thank you for being part of this supportive and enthusiastic community of artists, students, and listeners who are helping to move the music forward. Welcome to the 2016 Stanford Jazz Festival!

The Stanford Jazz Festival (SJF) attracts over 15,000 jazz fans every summer with artistic programming that represents the rich history of jazz, as well as the diversity and creative fertility of the contemporary jazz scene. Over the years, many of the greatest jazz artists have performed at SJF: In addition to the artists listed above, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Dave Holland, Louis Bellson, Hank Jones, Clark Terry, Joe Williams, Roy Haynes, Christian McBride, and many dozens of other legendary artists have appeared at the Festival.

Though SJW and the Stanford Jazz Festival have grown tremendously since the days of the jazz jams, the core values remain: to provide an informal environment in which fans, students, artists, and educators can come together as a community each year to celebrate their love of jazz. We invite you to experience the many facets of this year’s Festival by attending several SJF events. The best way to do so is by becoming an SJW member, with substantial benefits — including early access to the best seats and other exclusive perks. Please explore the advantages of membership on pages 7-8.

Uniting Jazz Education and Performance The Stanford Jazz Workshop (SJW) started in 1972 as an informal jam session for musicians who wanted to learn more about jazz. Since then, it’s grown into one of the premier jazz education organizations in the world, attracting top jazz musicians and educators to come and mentor talented students from around the world at its summer programs. Paired with exposure to additional jazz headliners in concert through the concurrent Stanford Jazz Festival (SJF), this powerful experience has had a lasting impact on over 20,000 students, from middle school ages through adults.

Some of the world’s best known jazz musicians have taught at SJW, from Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie to McCoy Tyner, Ray Brown, Branford Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, Geri Allen, Phil Woods, Mulgrew Miller, Sheila Jordan, Chick Corea, Kenny Barron, George Cables, and many others. Many former SJW students have emerged as the jazz stars of today, including Joshua Redman, Ravi Coltrane, Taylor Eigsti, Ambrose Akinmusire, Ethan Iverson, Jenny Scheinman, Julian Lage, Dayna Stephens, Larry Grenadier, Bill Stewart, and more. Thanks to generous supporters such as you, SJW’s new year-round activities are now serving dozens of middle school instrumentalists and vocalists in the Giant Steps Big Band and Giant Steps Jazz Singers after-school programs. Learn more about how you can help SJW serve even more deserving students on the following page, and at stanfordjazz.org.

Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie at SJW

At the Stanford Jazz Workshop, we know that jazz makes the world a better place. It’s an art form rooted in self-expression, cooperation, active listening, and mutual respect for everyone’s voice. It teaches one to embrace the unexpected, to find beauty in spontaneity, and to champion teamwork. The benefits of exposure to jazz are even more pronounced among young people. Kids who play jazz early in life develop improved social and cognitive skills, and find a lifelong love of music. They benefit from contact with the positive role models they encounter as members of the extended SJW community.

The core mission of SJW is to provide the benefits of jazz immersion programs to all musicians who have an interest in jazz. Equally important is our goal of delivering world-class jazz performances for over 15,000 Festival attendees each year. Your support, at any level, helps us achieve these key objectives in many ways:

> Allows us to provide financial aid and scholarships to students who might otherwise be unable to attend our programs. Every year, over 100 of our students benefit from financial aid and scholarship support.

> Enables us to expand our programming to bring high quality jazz education to a variety of communities year-round.

> Helps us bring artists of the highest caliber to perform at the Festival and teach in our summer and year-round programs.

To contribute to the Stanford Jazz Workshop, see our Membership information on page 8, visit stanfordjazz.org/donate, or email or call Development Director Mark Hernandez at [email protected], 650-736-0324, extension 310.
