Hotel Institution for Technology, (Instituto Tecnológico Hotelero, ITH) is a
hospitality and tourism innovation center for hotel, whose mission is to
improve the sector's competitiveness through innovation and technology.
• ITH is a national, private, non-profit organization, founded in 2004, based in Madrid,
attached to Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodations (Confederación
Española de Hoteles y Alojamientos Turísticos,CEHAT), Spanish hospitality employers’
association that represents 14,000 accommodations and 1,500,000 beds, and gathers 64
local, provincial and regional organizations throughout the country
• ITH fosters innovation by promoting the adoption of new technologies and management
systems, and facilitates access to cutting-edge tools sharing useful information, providing
professional training and developing projects, in order to improve hospitality and tourism
industry’s profitability, quality, efficiency and sustainability
• ITH works for the best interest of hoteliers, seeking simple, practical solutions to optimize
their performance in hotel management key areas -such as environmental and energy
efficiency, IT and operations; and providing qualified information to enable the sector to
gain knowledge about the tourism market
About ITH
For the Hotel Institution for Technology (ITH), innovation, knowledge,
technology and talent are valuable assets that will enhance Spanish
tourism industry competitiveness; making it able to create value for
customers, to offer better products and experiences, and to optimize
and integrate operational management sustainability into business
strategy.
• The work of ITH is aligned with the Spanish Government’s Plan del Turismo Español
Horizonte 2020, managed by the Secretary of State for Tourism, and aimed at helping
Spain to regain its leadership position: according to World Economic Forum, between
2009 and 2011, Spain has gone from sixth to eighth position in tourism competitiveness
ranking
• In the last decade, tourism has dropped its contribution to Spanish GDP, from 12% to
10%, and the sector, which competes in a global market, is subject to a world financial
turmoil
• The Spanish hotel industry has made great efforts to innovate and adopt new
technologies, but there is still a lot work to do. In addition, small and medium sized
enterprises (SME), which dominate this sector (70%) are the most exposed both to
changes in economic cycles and financial crises as well as to financial barriers to
innovate
