Dos Rios Color Run a Spectrum of
Success
The 1st Annual Dos Rios Color Run was a HUGE success! Thank you to all the families, staff, Dos Rios Parent-Teacher Group, El Fuego food truck, and Evans Police Department for making this such a successful community event! Over 200 participated, and the weather was perfect! A special thank you goes to 1st grade teacher Stephanie Sherman for her creativity, organization, and planning to ensure this event was spectacular!
Participants on average ran 2-3 laps on the mile-long loop around Dos Rios and Chappelow K-8. Along the way students, staff and families were sprayed with colored chalk and given high-fives by other Dos Rios staff members and members of the Evans PD. This year’s theme also focused on measurement and distance. Participants received tape measures, sand timers, and an engaging math measurement sheet. The 2nd Annual event is bound to grow! Mark your calendars now for April 21, 2018!

Dos Rios students and staff learned a little more about the various cultures of the world last month, as we celebrated World Culture Day! During the welcoming
ceremony, Toni and Lance treated students to a special Japanese Taiko performance, and students were able to learn more firsthand about the Japanese customs, culture, dress, and instruments. Through the afternoon rotations, students co-presented to partner
classes or had an opportunity to learn about others’ experiences, culture, or heritage from Germany, Ireland, China, Norway, Denmark, Mexico, England, Australia, and South Africa, among others.
An extra special thanks goes to Shelley Hines, who was instrumental in working out all the logistics for this special event! The extra hours that went into making this event happen are so appreciated! We could not have done it without you, Shelley!

Join Dos Rios Students for GrasslandsLIVE
on May 17!
Dos Rios students had the opportunity to be videotaped for CBS 4 recently. This was a promotional video to support our live field trip to the Pawnee Buttes on May 17th from 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. in English and 12:00 p.m. -1:00 p.m. in Spanish. You, too, can tag along with Dos Rios students for the FREE virtual fieldtrip. Feel free to sign up for the virtual field trip at grasslandslive.org. Below is a short description about the project from their website: “Join GrasslandsLIVE for a FREE distance learning adventure for students, educators and others on May 17, 2017, from Pawnee National Grasslands in Colorado. Rolling acres of
grassland used to stretch across the U.S. Historically the shortgrass, mixed-grass and tallgrass prairies covered about one-fifth of North America. Today, much of the historic range of grasslands has been lost, but grasslands continue to provide rich habitats for birds, fish mammals, insects and plants as well as key ecosystem services, such as capture of carbon and water. Learn about this ecosystem and how scientists, citizens, local ranchers and farmers are working together to manage and conserve this important habitat. Learn about:
The management, importance, and conservation of grasslands.
Birds and other animals that depend on grassland habitat.
The connection between grasslands in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
The role of citizens, public land management agencies, and non-governmental organizations in managing, protecting, and conserving natural resources. How to participate in citizen science programs related to grasslands so that students learn the importance of being a good steward.”

Having Lice Is Nothing to Panic
or Get Embarrassed About
It can happen to anyone. It’s important to know lice are not a health hazard or sign of uncleanliness at home or school. Lice are crawling insects that live on the human scalp and hair. Lice DO NOT hop or fly. They are a nuisance but have not been shown to spread disease. Lice are the size of a sesame seed (usually brown) and lay tiny white oval shaped eggs (nits) that are attached to the hair shaft close to the scalp. Nits may look like dandruff, but they cannot be easily removed because they are glued to the hair shaft. Nits are usually found behind ears, at the top of one’s head and at neckline/hairline. They cause itching of the scalp. It is useful to periodically check your child’s hair for lice or nits.
If your child gets lice, there are several lice treatment shampoos available at local drugstores. Careful inspection and combing of hair following shampoo to remove nits is very important in getting rid of lice. Clothes, linens, towels should
be washed and dried in a HOT clothes drier. Retreatment may be required in 7-10 days. To avoid spreading lice, remind your children not to share hats, combs, brushes, scarves, or coats.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the HEALTH OFFICE at 348-1326. The District 6 website also has head lice information/links under departments, health services, students with health concern information. Thank you!
