Church Celebrates Fest Day;Releases New CD

BY GLORIA BURNS

On the Dec. 12 Feast Day for OurLady of Guadalupe, Our Lady ofGuadalupe Catholic Church of Doral helda massive bi-lingual celebration at theFirefighters Memorial Building in Doral.

A standing room only crowd wasmoved as they passed through the archwayentrance beautifully adorned with flowersby industrious and faithful parishionerswho donated their time and talent to honorthe Virgen of Guadalupe. Children came dressed in native Mexicangarb to participate in the mass that con-cluded with a performance by Mariachis. As an added bonus, the congregationheard for the first time a new CD writtenspecifically for the parish, “MyGuadalupe”. Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Churchis an incredibly large congregation inDoral that has become a parish communi-ty despite not yet having a church build-

ing. Thanks to very strong church min-istries, the congregation looks to raise theneeded funds, very often in creative ways.

Most recently, a few talented folksfrom the Music Ministry produced theaforementioned CD with the song specifi-cally about the Church. The song waswritten by Carlos Puchi with arrange-ments by Latin Grammy winner PaulHoyle and graphic design by YeshicaYanes.

On the CD, the song about the Churchis performed in both English and Spanishand is available for a donation of $10.Thus far, funds raised from this CDexceed $2,000.

Fr. Israel Mago, Church pastor, announced the church had collected morethan 2,300 toys during the Christmas sea-son as donations for the less fortunate inHomestead and other areas of great need.

In my usual column space, I want toshare an inspiring testimonial from my stu-dent Camilo Bandes. Once a shy highschool kid, he lost 60 pounds to become agreat martial arts student, succeeding incollege and today displaying great confi-dence. Most Doral Tribune readers have settheir New Year’s resolutions yet by March, most will have given up unless they haveCamilo’s perseverance. Here is his life-

changing story, in his own words. (If hedid it, so can you).

“My name is Camilla Bands, and when Iwas younger, I never had many friends. Some could say none at all. I was thatstrange, quiet, obese child who mostseemed to say would never amount tomuch. In fact they would have probablybeen right had I not found Anta’s Fitnessand Self Defense.

“Through my teachers’ guidance, MasterAnta has not only taught me how to live fit,but also to live fearlessly, to have confi-dence in myself, not only in what I do nowbut what I will do in the future.

“About three years ago at about age 17, Iweighed an astonishing 240 pounds. I amexactly five feet, eight inches in height, soit was obvious that I was more than border-line obese. In fact, for most of my highschool years, I was overweight, making itthe hardest time of my life.

“People would chew me out, call menames, pick on me, look down on me withpity because of how I looked and acted, and my lack of confidence. I would nevergive speeches in class, nor would I raisemy hand to answer a question.

“I was unable to go up a flight of stairswithout losing my breath, a bad situationthat became so bad I started to agree withpeople around me who said I would neveramount to much. I felt useless, alone. I feltlike a loser.

“When I started college, it was a strangetime for me. I know that to survive I need-ed to be stronger, but I didn’t know what todo. When I went to buy groceries, I foundthe school of Anta’s Fitness and SelfDefense and decided to put my fears awayfor one moment and enroll. My first class

was May Thai, not at alleasy. In fact, it was one ofthe most intense things Ihave ever felt.

But even after what Iexperienced, somethinginside of me did not want toquit. I kept going to classesand eventually joined theKung Fu course where myMaster taught what hasmade me the man I am now:to be confident in myself, and to be strong..

My favorite quote of hiswhile doing exercises:“Live fit” after which werespond: “Live fearless, sir!” Thus: “Live Fit, LiveFearless” — I am honestlybasing my life on that quote,

because it is the quote that now defines me. “After two years at Anta’s Fitness, I am

now 20 years old, weigh 180 pounds, andcan run up a flight of stairs with ease, Iwalk, talk and live with confidence, nolonger doubting my abilities. I can domore than I ever thought possible so thatnow I can say with pride that I am strong, Iam confident, I no longer live in fear ofhow others see me nor how I act or who Iam.

“I even teach classes now as anInstructor in Training so that children maylearn early what it means to live with con-fidence.

My name is Camilo Bandes, I live fit, Ilive fearless.”

It’s tough to find anything not to likeabout the new 2013 Hyundai Santa FeSport. It has a zippy turbocharged engine, ahigh-quality interior with an upright dashdesign, a roomy rear area with sliding andreclining seats, which means that passen-gers can get comfortable.

The Santa Fe Sport and sibling LWBSanta Fe were both designed underHyundai’s “Fluidic Sculpture” concept, which aims at giving the impression ofconstant motion. Hyundai designers used athree-bar hexagonal front grille, a lowstance and a rising beltline with a roofspoiler and wraparound taillights to createthe constant motion concept. Design ele-ments also include a standard chrome grilleand door handle accents and bodycolormirrors. In addition, 19-inch wheels and atwin-tip chrome exhaust are standard onSanta Fe Sport 2.0T.

Hyundai designers evolved both Santa

Fe models together, with the differentiatingelement being the side window shape. Thelonger Santa Fe LWB has a shape thathighlights the increased passenger andcargo room behind the second row seat.Santa Fe also has its own bodyside charac-ter lines from the B-pillar back, a differentgrille design, 18-inch alloy wheels, dualexhaust tips and a flush-mounted tow hitchdesign.

Both Santa Fe models have the sameflowing interior designed for passengerfunctionality and comfort. From the heatedrear seats and available eight-way powerdriver seat, to a standard 40/20/40 foldingrear seat back, both have flexibility and apleasant cabin. Also new for 2013 – andstandard on all Santa Fe models with clothseating – is a YES Essentials seat fabrictreatment that provides soil-resistant, anti-odor and anti-static properties for addedlongevity and livability.

Special attention went into other interiordetails, such as an optional panoramic sun-roof that allows more natural light into thecabin, and premium window switch trim.

The three-row Santa Fe increases sec-ond-row legroom by 1.9 inches and cargocapacity 5.6 cubic feet and houses second-row HVAC controls and vents to increasefamily comfort, while also offering a stan-

dard 50/50 split folding third-row benchseat with 31.5 inches of legroom.

As for power, the Santa Fe Sport offers achoice of a 2.4-liter Gasoline Direct Engine(GDI) engine or a turbocharged 2.0-literGDI engine. Both engines have been exten-sively tested in the Hyundai Sonata andprovide excellent power for city or high-way driving, and have the ability to tow upto 3,500 pounds. With 190 hp and 181pounds-feet of torque, the 2.4 liter enginedelivers impressive fuel economy of 21/29

mpg. The higher output 2.0-liter tur-bocharged engine in the Santa Fe Sport2.0T increases horsepower to 264. TheLWB Santa Fe is powered by the acclaimed3.3-liter GDI V-6 engine, which also pow-ers the Hyundai Azera.
