PROMOTING THE VISION: By the Year 2020 more visitors will be attracted to The Bahamas by Bahamian Art,Culture and Heritage than by sun, sand and sea.
In 2003 Mr. Burnside visited Jessicas studio, which was then located in Arawak Avenue, andproposed to her the idea of developing a line ofteapots specifically for the Doongalik Studio
Marina Village Gallery. At the time Colebrookewas not as intrigued by the idea and felt thatshe had left her teapot making days back atRISD (The Rhode Island School of Design). However, Mr. Burnside, being a man of visionand persistence came fully equipped with abook entitled 100 Teapots produced byLarks Publishing! Since that meeting (andmany teapots later) Jessica has yet to exhaust
the possibilities of this domestic item!
This years exhibition is proudly sponsored byDanBrad Limited, The DAguilar Art Founda-tion, Mrs. Dawn Davies, Jessicas Tileworks,Guanima Press and The Culture Gallery. Partproceeds from the sale of the artwork at theexhibition will assist in continuing to fund theDenis Knight Choice Award at COB.
The exhibition opens the evening of October6th and it promises to be a fascinating event. We look forward to seeing you there!
ACE is a bi-annual exhibition that was started in 2009 by Jessica Cole-brooke to bring together Bahamian Potters and Ceramicist under onevenue. Although a public call was sent out, very few of the ProfessionalCeramicist and Potters (those who hold a Degree in this area of Art)participated. Instead, those persons with true dedication and passionfor this art form were in full attendance such as Sue Bennett-Williams,Imogene Walkine, Neko Meicholas, Tamara Russell, Monika Minnis,Jessica Colebrooke and Maxwell Taylor.
The first ACE also took the opportunity to honour Denis Knight for hispioneering contributions in bringing awareness and appreciation of ce-ramics as fine art in The Bahamas. As a tribute to this enduring talent, the Denis Knight Choice Award was established in July 2010 throughthe College Of The Bahamas to be awarded to a COB student whoexhibits consistent excellence in ceramic work. This summer, the firstrecipient of this award was Mr. Alistair Stevenson.
For the 2nd ACE the theme My Flamboyant Teapot was strategicallychosen since the exhibition was being held at Doongalik Studios onVillage Road and several years ago Jackson Burnside had been instru-mental in influencing Jessica to pursue this theme.
