Toby LunnMadame ButterflyI wanted to end withthis painting becausewhen I was at COB I started my artclasses with StanBurnside it is ironicbecause now I work

with his brother,Jackson so the Burnsides are real powerful figures in my life. I startedout drawing the figure and Stan wasshowing me that an artist could besophisticated and make a living andmake a statement.

But the work I was doing I was tooyoung to make my own mark - I wasalways drawing typically stereotypi-cal images for example, the blackman on the side of the road skinning

conch which is awesome and rele-vant but its not a totality of who weare. I guess I was struggling with myown identity as to why I do what I do.

I morphed into the abstractions overthe years and this is the first time Iam showing a figurative piece in 13years and I was really excited that Ididnt compromise on the type of fig-ure I wanted to show. I really lovethis figure!

    The significance of the butterfly

going back to sobriety - when I gotmy 90 days sobriety chip there wasan elderly lady in the group who wasleaving us she gave me her chipand it has a butterfly on it. It has theserenity prayer on one side and abutterfly, which was very significantshe (the painting) is making a state-ment for me - almost like MY sobrietyand it is still a beautiful thing.

    When I first didthe sculpture

    course my pro-

    fessor, Kendra

    Frorup asked

    me What would

    make me sad

    and I said My

mother dying so that was what I

worked from. I did a lot of elabo-

rate sketches of a lady at the fu-

neral using my face because I am

the exact replica of my mother.

At the time we were getting ready

for a bronze pour and we decided

that I would do a mold of my face -

I let somebody pour hot plaster on

my face for about 30 - 45 minutes!

We made a wax mold but the first

one was too thick and I had to cut

it out of the mold and I cut some of

the head area off. I used this piece

for the bronze pour process I

    participated in everythingthe

    skimming, pouring and everything

else and people said, Youre from

The Bahamas so youre used to

the heat! The actual pour was an

    exhilarating and fun experience,

    although a really tedious process.

I added a wood sculpture to this

    piece as well.
