After a lifetime of constant search and

struggle, Maxwell Taylor has estab-lished an international reputation ofexcellence, and has earned a cele-brated place in a society that had noplace for artists when he was born.Born in 1939 in Grants Town, NewProvidence, Bahamas, Max Taylor, along with Brent Malone and KendallHanna, was one of the first appren-tices of the fabled Chelsea Pottery inNassau. When the pottery closed in

1966, Max found his way to NewYork. This visit, which was to last ap-proximately twenty years before hemoved south to the Carolinas andtraveled extensively in Europe ob-serving the social, economic, andpolitical dynamics of many cultures. This exposure opened doors to theunique and intensely sensitive per-ception of the world of Maxwell Tay-lor.

Following is a 2006 review of theartist written by Jackson Burnside:

As one of the first Bahamian Art-ists, Maxwell is perhaps our mostadvanced. He is a stubbornly indi-vidualist artist that has followed hisown vision, disregarding the com-mercial aspects of art that could

have made his life so comfortable. These are the words that the lateBrent Malone, a close friend andfellow artist, used in introducingMax Taylor at the opening of a one-man exhibition at Brents MatineeGallery, on the 12th December,

    1978.

less quality of the dignity andstrength of suffering in the experi-ence of mankind and nature.

Max Taylor is a versatile and ac-complished technician and a mas-ter of a variety of media - painting, printmaking, ceramics and sculp-ture. In all of his works the searchfor meaning, the depth of thinking, and the joy of the graphics is evi-dent. Taylor will tell you I love todraw. I am constantly drawing. Imake hundreds of drawings to de-velop my ideas.

tions to him on his answer:

    "Doongalik" is your interpre-

    junkanoos.

    FULL ANSWER: The name

    Doongalik comes from the

    compilation of the sounds

made by the goat skin drum

    (Doong) along with the

    sounds of the cowbell

(Kalick) - two of the tradi-

tional musical instrumentsused in the Bahamas mag-
