What is an Addon Domain?

• An add on domain is a fully functional domain name, with its own distinct website content.

• It's like having multiple websites or hosting packages sharing the same control panel account.


How Addon Domains appear to Visitors

• When incoming traffic uses your addon domain, there is absolutely no evidence to the visitor that it is in fact an addon domain.

• It bares no reference to the primary domain with which it shares the control panel and server, therefore your visitors access the addon domain website just like they would any other independent unique website.


How Addon domain appear for FTP

• In the case of FTP, the addon domain does actually reference the primary domain, but only by username as follows; [email protected]

• This is the only point where there is evidence of the addon domain referencing the primary domain. The good news is that FTP is a back end operation restricted to system or site administrators.

How Addon Domains Work

• To understand how an addon domain works, you simply need to know how it's created.

• Three things happen when an addon domain is created;

– A folder is created in the public_html directory.

– A sub domain for the primary domain is created and attached to the new folder in the public_html directory.

– The new domain name (addon domain) is then associated with the sub domain created in the previous step.


Urls that can access Addon Domain’s content

• For example, if you create an addon domain - addon.comfor the primary domain - primary.com, then, the following urls will be able to direct visitors to your addondomain's website content:

– primary.com/addon.com

– addon.primary.com

– addon.com


Creating an Addon Domain

• Login to your Cpanel account.

• Navigate to the Domains section and click on AddonDomains.

• New Domain Name: Type in the new domain name without the http or www prefix.

• Username/directory/subdomain Name: This is the folder Cpanel will create in the public_html directory.

• Ensure that the name you provide, doesn't exist as a folder in the public_html directory.

• Password: This is the password used for the FTPaccount that's automatically created by Cpanel. Key in your password of choice.

• Click on Add Domain to complete procedure.

• At this point, your new domain is now successfully added to your Cpanel account. You may proceed to add website files to the folder created in public_htmldirectory.


Why is my new domain not working?

For your new domain to display your website content two conditions must be met;

– Your domain name must be registered. This must be done by a valid domain registrar, such as Namecheap where i have personally registered several domain names at quite affordable prices.

– The domain name servers (DNS) must be set to the server hosting the website. You can get professional help on this.

Why is my new domain not working?

• If the mentioned conditions have all been met and you are still not able to view your website using the new domain, then, your name servers may not have propagated yet.

• It takes anywhere between 12-24hrs for propagation to complete. Propagation is the period taken by name servers to update changes.
