Many people have a fascination withowning a wild, dangerous, exotic pet.Maybe it's bragging rights amongfriends, or simply having somethingthat few other people have. Too ofteninjuries or fatalities occur at the pawsof an exotic animal, and in many coun-tries, including the United States andCanada, it is illegal to own exotic ani-mals as pets outside of a wildlife facil-ity or without special licensing.

Despite their popularity, the followingpets can also be dangerous.TurtlesOutlawed exotic pets don't always

have big claws and fangs. Turtles, forexample, are banned as pets becauseof their propensity to carry salmonellabacteria. Since 1975, the FDA hasplaced on a ban on the sales of turtlesat a size of 4 inches or smaller. Prior tothe ban, researchers linked an esti-mated 250,000 cases of salmonellosisin children and infants to pet turtles. That's because the small turtles are ir-resistible to children, and the smallerthe size the higher propensity the childmay try to put the turtle in his mouth.Salmonella can also be contractedwhen handling a turtle and then put-ting fingers in the mouth.Big CatsDespite being well trained and experi-

enced in tiger handling, illusionist RoyHorn of the long-running partnershipSeigfreid and Roy was mauled by one ofhis show tigers in 2003. Big cats can bevery dangerous to people, thanks inlarge part to their unpredictability.

Also, the sheer size of a big cat cancause injuries to a person even if thecat is simply playing.

The size of a big cat also makes it achallenge to find a cage or enclosure tohouse the animal. In addition, feedingthe animal is no small task, as largercats need substantial amounts of foodto remain healthy and strong.

Cats routinely engage in territorymarking with urine and engage incombative behavior to defend theirspace. They produce a lot of waste thatwill also need to be cleaned. Pet tigershave been involved in several fatalitiesand maulings throughout the UnitedStates and Canada in recent years.SnakesConstrictors and venomous snakes

are generally outlawed due to thepropensity for injury or death. Con-strictors, as their name suggests, areequipped to constrict, or squeeze theirprey to death through suffocation.Anacondas and boa constrictors canreach 13 feet or more in length andseveral inches around in body width. At this size, they can easily subdue apet, child or even an adult caught bysurprise. In the summer of 2009, a 9-foot albino python owned by a Floridaman got out of his cage and strangledhis girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter todeath.

Venomous snakes have powerful ven-om that can cause anything from neu-rological problems to paralysis and ex-treme pain to death. These snakes areformidable foes in their natural envi-

ronments, and with the high chance ofbiting an owner, they are not safe tohave as pets.

Too often snakes that become un-manageable are simply let out intothe wild where they can becomeneighborhood menaces.Monkeys and chimpsWith a close resemblance to humans,

and the frequency with which chimpsare used in movies or trained forshows, people think that these animalsare safe to own.

In reality, chimpanzees can engage inpack hunting behavior. They have beenknown to be very aggressive, feedingon other monkey species and eventurning cannibalistic to earn a highersocial standing.

Monkeys have large fangs and havebeen known to attack people and hu-mans. Some species also throw fecesand spray urine, something many peo-ple would not look for in a pet.

In 2010, Charla Nash from Connecti-cut was mauled by a 200-pound chim-panzee. Nash lost much of her face andher two hands in the attack. She no

longer has eyes because they were re-moved due to infection.ReptilesCrocodiles and alligators start out

as small, almost cute hatchlings, which are attractive to pet owners. But these animals grow very quicklyin a short period of time. They canreach several feet in length and hun-dreds of pounds.

These animals have very powerfuljaws capable of doing quite anamount of damage. It is not beyondreason for a croc or gator to drag aperson into the water, where survivalis difficult. They participate in a"death roll," where they spin like atop in the water, ripping and tearingflesh apart from prey.

Despite their size, these reptiles cancharge rather quickly on land. In waterthey ambush hunters and can quicklysurprise an animal or person.

Exotic animals might seem like apotentially interesting pet but thesafety risk associated with these an-imals is simply too great to welcomesuch pets into a home.

Dear God,It has been a joy to see all the write-ups about Tim

Tebow, the quarterback for the Denver Bronco. It remind-ed me of the apostle Paul who shared with us in Philippi-ans Chapter 1 verses 12-18 about him being persecuted intaking a stand for being a Christian. It has given me morecourage as a Christian. I hope that when I am challenged,as Tim Tebow has been throughout his college and profes-sional career, that I will not be ashamed to take the samestand as he has.

I have enclosed the Bible passage for everyone to see. Ihope that as they read it, they will be encouraged and be-gin to share their stories with You. I have really enjoyedreading “Dear God” each month and hope that others willfind it rewarding to their lives. I was hesitant, at first, towrite but once these articles began to surface, I knew I hadto respond with a grateful heart.

These words from the Bible tell me how important it is for“the gospel” God’s Word to be shared, even when people tryto use them to cause trouble for others. I will do my best toremember these words and to apply them to my life.

“Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that whathas happened to me has actually served to advance thegospel. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout thewhole palace guard and to everyone else that I am inchains for Christ. 14 And because of my chains, most ofthe brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lordand dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.

15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and ri-valry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so out oflove, knowing that I am put here for the defense of thegospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambi-tion, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up troublefor me while I am in chains. 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether fromfalse motives or true, Christ is preached. And because ofthis I rejoice…”

By the way, I like Your email addresses: [email protected] and [email protected] are really cool.

Sincerely,Billy

With overflowing spirits, pub crawlsand boisterous parades, St. Patrick'sDay celebrations are largely gearedtoward adults. Although children mayexperience a little bit of the festivities, they may not be able to participatefully in all of the activities. That is why parents, teachers and

caregivers can develop child-friendlyactivities that will enable children toenjoy the festivities of the day but alsoto do so in a way that is safe and age-appropriate.One of the easiest ways to engage

children for the holiday is to enablethem to create hand-made decora-tions and games that can be dis-played. With a few simple supplies, children can create a variety of festiveitems to share their enthusiasm. An idea to get them started is to con-

struct a rainbow and pot of gold com-plete with leprechaun.

To do so gather the following sup-

plies:

* poster board* clean, empty gallon milk container* crepe paper in rainbow colors and

in black* gold foil circles* construction paper* glue* scissors* glitter, if desired1. Draw and cut out a leprechaun

using various shades of constructionpaper. Glue it to the posterboard.2. Cut out half of the milk container

to form a "pot." Use glue to adhereblack crepe paper to it. Attach to theposterboard.3. Stick gold foil circles to form the

"gold coins" that will be filling the potof gold.4. Cut out pieces of crepe paper from

the rainbow colors and attach to theposterboard to form the rainbow. Letthe pieces end right near the pot of

gold.5. Allow kids to embellish further

with glitter and any other things theymay have on hand.Display the leprechaun with a pot of

gold at the end of the rainbow in aprime spot during your St. Patrick'sDay celebration.

Well-meaning parents or grandparents of-ten tell children not to do something withthe warning that a serious health implica-tion could result. Kids often take their eld-ers at their word. But some of these warn-ings bear more truth than others. Here'sthe scoop on some of the more commonmisconceptions.Myth:Swallowed chewing gum stays in the

stomach for seven years. While chewing gum cannot be digested

and is meant to be chewed and not swal-lowed, accidentally swallowing a piecehere and there won't cause major issues. That's because the gum will simply passthrough the digestive system whole andcome out with stool. If a large amount ofgum is swallowed in a short period of

time, then there could be issues, includ-ing constipation and intestinal blockagein children.Myth:If you keep your eyes crossed too long,

they will get stuck that way.The muscles in the eye are just like any

muscles elsewhere in the body. Althoughthey may tire and get sore, they are rela-tively resilient and can take a lot of wearand tear. Crossing your eyes may taxthese muscles, but you won't do any per-manent harm. Rest assured that crossingthe eyes will not leave them stuck thatway.Myth:Going outside with wet hair will make

you sick.

Although you will feel colder steppingoutside with a part of your body wet, itwon't make you more susceptible tocatching a cold. Researchers at the Com-mon Cold Research Unit in England oncetested a group of volunteers who were giv-en the cold virus. One half of the groupstayed in a warm room, while the otherstook a bath and stood wet in a hallway fora half hour. The wet group didn't catchmore colds than the dry.Myth:Covering your head is most important

because you lose 75 percent of your bodyheat through it.

This calculation is more for an infantwhose head makes up a greater percentageof his or her body. In an adult, the figure is

closer to 10 percent. Heat can escape fromany exposed area of the body. Therefore, itis helpful to bundle up all areas of the bodywhen spending time outdoors in the coldweather.Myth:Don't swim right after eating. The basis of this mantra is that when di-

gesting food, the digestive system pullsblood away from the muscles and the ideais that you could cramp up and drown. While you may have less energy to swimvigorously, chances are you won't be soweak as to drown.

Although many health myths prevail, knowing the truth can help parents edu-cate their children better about which be-haviors are safe and which are risky.

(NAPSA) — Whether it’s for the nostalgia, the con-venience or the reasonable cost, flavorful pot roast ismaking a comeback. Home cooks in the know areseeking out cost-effective cuts like boneless beefchuck, bottom round roast or rump roast and toss-ing them in a crock pot with simple pantry staplesfor melt-in-your-mouth dishes.

Pot roast is easier to prepare than you mightthink, and it’s simple to customize by using differentbeef cuts, seasonings, liquids and vegetables. Plus, sandwiches, soups, tacos and hardy salads areamong the possibilities for leftovers.

When you’re busy and want a deliciously afford-able meal, this recipe from Whole Foods Marketmakes it easy:

Beef pot roast1 1/2 teaspoons dried parsley 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon minced onion 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 (2 1/2 to 3 pounds) boneless beef chuck roast 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 sliced onions 1 3/4 cups reduced-sodium beef broth 1 cup tomato juice 1 1/2 pounds potatoes, cut into 1-inch chunks 1 pound carrots, cut into 1-inch chunksPreheat oven to 350° F. In a small bowl, combine

seasonings, salt and pepper. Pat roast dry withpaper towels and rub all over with seasoning mix-ture. In a large Dutch oven or ovenproof heavysaucepot, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add

roast and brown on all sides. Remove to a plate andset aside. Add onions and 1/4 cup water and cookabout 8 minutes or until tender and golden, stirringoccasionally. Stir in broth and juice and bring to aboil. Add roast back to pot, cover and transfer tooven. Roast 2 hours. Stir in potatoes and carrots, cover and continue roasting 45 minutes longer oruntil vegetables and meat are tender. Transfer roastand vegetables to a large serving platter and drizzlewith pan juices.

A toast to pot roast

This week’s Sudoku solution

by Sarah Gerow, Lewis County Dairy PrincessDo you find the weather getting you down? Well

don’t worry — spring is right around the corner. Here are helpful hints to kick start your taste buds.Try adding cheese to your favorite meal or snack.Since cheese is such a versatile food, experimentwith it in different ways; like adding it to a casseroleor pour it on vegetables and crackers with morethan 300 varieties of domestic cheeses available thepossibilities are endless!

Remember that February is national children’sdental health month. Research suggests that sever-al varieties of cheese may protect against toothdecay.

January and February have been a little slow. Ihave done radio announcements on Froggy 97.Sylvia Larkins and Cami Steiner attended the annu-al Holstein Banquet on Jan. 28 at Steak and Brew.

On Feb. 20-21, I will be attending the annualState Dairy Princess Pageant and ADADC meetingin Syracuse. Wish me Luck!

Once again I want to thank all the farmers and

ADADC for their check off dollars that fund theDairy Princess Program. Also thank you for all thehard work that you do 365 days a year.

Here is a good recipe for cold winter days thatuses a variety of cheese:

Cheese Chili2 tbs. butter2 large onions3 chopped carrots3 ribs celery3 small jalapeno peppers, seeded and minced1/4 cup tomato1 tbs. chili powder1 tbs. cocoa powder1 tbs. Cumin seed1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes6 12-ounces tomato juice2 cups cooked or canned black beans, rinsed1 cup (4 ounces) shredded mozzarella cheese1 cup (4 ounces) shredded Monterey jack cheese1 cup (4 ounces) shredded sharp cheddar cheeseSauté onions in butter over medium high heat in

large saucepan until translucent, about 3 min-utes. Add tomato paste, chili powder, cocoapowder and cumin; cook until mixturecaramelizes to a dark brown, about 10 min-utes. Stir in carrots, celery and jalapenos andstir to coat. Add crushed tomatoes and beans.Stir in tomato juice. Simmer for at least 1 hour,up to 2 hours.

Preheat broiler. Stir Mozzarella and MontereyJack cheese into chili and top with shreddedCheddar. Broil until cheese is bubbly, about 4minutes.

Dairy Fact: Milk remains fresh for 7-10 daysafter the expiration date if refrigerated at 35-40°F. Each 5° (F) rise in temperature shortensmilk’s shelf life by 50 percent because of bac-teria growth.

A recipe to warm you up

Whether you're cooking for a crowd or a crowdedschedule, pot roast can be the answer.

(NAPSA) — This year, sandwich lovers are cele-brating the 250th anniversary of this handy, deli-cious meal. Since the best sandwich starts withhomemade bread, the best way to launch any cele-bration is to bake some bread.

The 250th anniversary only marks the naming ofthis classic meal. Bread has been eaten with meat orvegetables since Neolithic times. During the MiddleAges, slabs of bread, called trenchers, were used asplates. Eventually, the sandwich appeared as a late-night meal among the aristocracy.

The meal was named after John Montagu, 4thEarl of Sandwich, an 18th century English aristo-crat, who in 1762 ordered his valet to bring himmeat tucked between bread. Others began to order“the same as Sandwich!”

Here are some recipes to help you enjoy some clas-sic sandwiches. The whole wheat bread works wellwith peanut butter and jelly, while the Italian DailyBread is perfect for a Tuscan Tuna Sandwich. Thetwo bread recipes use Fleischmann’s RapidRiseYeast, which reduces rising time by as much as 50percent, eliminating the first rise.

100% Whole Wheat BreadMakes: 2 loaves Prep time: 30 minutes Proof time: 30 to 60 minutes Bake time: 35 to 45 minutes8 to 8 1/2 cups whole wheat flour 2 envelopes Fleischmann’s® RapidRise Yeast2 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 2/3 cups water

2/3 cup milk 1/4 cup honey 1/4 cup vegetable oil1/2 cup wheat branCombine 3 1/2 cups flour, undissolved yeast and

salt in a large mixing bowl. Heat water, milk, honeyand oil until very warm (120˚ to 130˚F). Graduallyadd to flour mixture; beat 2 minutes at mediumspeed with electric mixer, scraping bowl occasional-ly. Add 1 cup flour and wheat bran; beat 2 minutesat high speed, scraping bowl occasionally. Withspoon, stir in enough remaining flour to make softdough.
