The Best Laid Plans

by Anthony Feroci

as interviewed by Jacquelyn McEttrick

Many caregivers feel frustrated when trying to assist elderly loved ones in planning for the future. Most are unfamiliar with the legal terminology and are often intimidated by the seemingly overwhelming amount of paperwork involved. In response to the demand created by caregivers and seniors (who represent the fastest growing segment of the American population), a relatively new field of law known as “elder law” has emerged to deal with the issues faced by senior citizens in the United States and their loved ones. Yet many seniors and their caregivers are unaware of what elder law attorneys do and their areas of expertise. According to elder law attorney Anthony V. Feroci, Jr., “The field of elder law includes many different areas of law, including estate planning (trusts and wills), disability planning (guardianship, powers of attorney, health care proxies) and long-term care planning (Medicare, Medicaid, long-tern care insurance, assisted living planning, nursing home planning).” Elder law attorneys have much more in-depth training in these complex areas than do attorneys who practice general law. It is their specialized training that makes working with elder law attorneys different from working with general practice attorneys.
