Date published: 14 April 2015 The International Telecommunication Union may be changing the way Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is calculated. You're invited to have your say about how your business could be impacted. How UTC is currently calculated Currently, UTC is calculated through a worldwide network of atomic clocks. From time to time, these clocks adjust forward by one second (also known as a 'leap second') to align them with the rotation of the Earth. How leap seconds can impact your business Leap seconds must be adjusted at the same time around the world. These adjustments can affect business activities that rely on precise timing, including computer networks and applications. The proposed changes to UTC In November this year, the International Telecommunication Union will be deciding whether to remove the current system of leap seconds from the calculation of UTC. The issues being considered for this change include: taking out the leap second adjustments from the calculation of UTC changing the name of UTC to differentiate the new system of time calculation from the old system. Learn more and have your say If you are interested in attending a workshop hosted by the National Measurement Institute (NMI) to learn more about the issue and how it can impact your business, fill in and return the feedback sheet indicating your interest by 30 April 2015. How UTC is currently calculated
