How to. . .Get connected

and stay informed

In 1704, The Boston News-Letter was granted permission to become the American colonies’ first continuously published newspaper, and since that time, there is truly nothing more connective and informative as a newspaper.

Newspapers provide point, the local eyes and ears, for all. It is only a newspaper that will give its readers the particulars that television, radio, and Internet may leave out for the sake of being concise. The newspaper functions as the protector of democracy by informing citizen on all lev-els of news, government actions, feel-good stories, important announcements…the list goes on.

Newspapers are the sinews that furnish movement to other news media sources and, ultimate-ly, to the people they serve. Without the newspaper, people would be left in the dark – unin-formed Americans, unable to act and react to the vast world in which we all live. Newspapers are important enough to be protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which disal-lows government from “abridging the freedom...of the press.”

Even Thomas Jefferson knew the important role of the newspaper. In 1787 he wrote, “The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people…and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.” Let us all prefer the latter.

Celebrating Our85th Anniversary!

Some people will go through life and never experience a kitchen remodeling project or get the chance to plan their own kitchen layout in a new home. Since such an occurrence is so low, how do you go about making smart decisions to create the perfect or correct kitchen for you?

There are basically four major factors affecting the kitchen remodeling or designing experience: the design itself, the quality of the products used, and the quality of installation. All of these will be affected by the fourth, the budget.

The design. There are perhaps many ways to design a kitchen for any “normal” sized room. However, of the many designs available, only 2 or 3 will be considered efficient and aesthetically pleasing. A poor design can actually cost more, look bad, and be terrible to work in. Many considerations go into the design process such as room size and shape, the work triangle, traffic flow, and how the kitchen will be used. A good designer will not just fill the spaces, they will be able to justify why they used a particular cabinet or cabinets to increase efficiency of use or to affect an aesthetic like door balance. Good designers are out there, so find one you trust and feel comfortable with. A specialty kitchen shop will almost always have superior designers compared to chain building centers, due to being focused on kitchens and baths exclusively.

Quality of the products. Kitchen cabinets and appliances come in all ranges of price and quality. Appliances can readily be separated by features and price. Kitchen cabinets can be a little harder to judge true quality. Anyone can put a pretty face on a cabinet box that will rapidly deteriorate under normal use and care. There are only a few things that can happen to kitchen cabinets that will make you want to replace them: The finish fails, drawers, doors and lazy-susans break down, and in rare cases, cabinets can literally fall off the walls due to poor construction or installation.

Solid wood fronts with a hand rubbed stain, sealed and then covered with a varnish finish are superior to veneered fronts with a lacquer finish. Lacquer softens over time, and varnish does not. There are even differences in varnishes and the techniques used to apply them. For example, is the finish applied as doors go down a conveyor belt on their way to drying ovens, or are they flow-coated while lying flat, and hand carried and allowed to air dry naturally? The flow-coat

process puts on a much heavier finish. The durability of this flow-coat method of finishing will stand up to hard use and keep your kitchen looking great for many, many years.

Plywood construction is preferred over particle-board. Plywood holds the glue, screws, and staples that hold cabinets together better than particle-board does. Drawers made of hardwoods with hardware using metal ball bearings will out perform drawers made of particle-board using only plastic or nylon wheels without bearings. Look behind the pretty face, and see if you have a cabinet that will last but a few years, or one that will last thirty years or more. Ask your designer to explain the construction materials and processes of their cabinets.

Installation. So you have purchased quality cabinets, and have your kitchen arranged in a design to your liking. Now you need to get them installed by a competent installer. Installing cabinets is not overly technical, but there are tricks to every trade. A good installer makes the job go swiftly and will ensure that your kitchen will look and work wonderfully for years. A poor installer can make a mess of the best cabinets. Some kitchen stores will have their own installers, or will use sub-contracted installers, and offer an installed price. Others will only do a material only sale. Get a good installer. A good kitchen shop will be able to recommend one with references.

Budget. Everyone is on a budget. A kitchen remodel is a rare occurrence, and can greatly affect the value of your home. Do not set a budget too low, or you may be working in a kitchen you hate for years, and may even need to remodel it later to sell the home. Too high, and you will not recover your investment when and if you do go to sell the house. Your personal situation will affect this. Ask any realtor how important a nice kitchen is to the resale value of a home. In most cases, you will be able to recover more than your investment if done wisely. Most people would not think twice about paying an addition thousand dollars for a car with all the features they want, as opposed to a stripped down model. A kitchen will outlive the car many, many years, and, unlike the car, if done well, you will be able to fully recoup your cost when you sell the house, not to mention the years of enjoyment that a well planned kitchen will give to you.

So the road to a good kitchen remodeling project should really start with a good kitchen designer. A good designer can help to streamline the entire process, and ensure you get a beautiful kitchen that is a joy to work in and will last for many years. As a friend once told me, “The quality will remain long after the price has been forgotten.”

How to. . .

Choosing a dentist can make a world of difference in a patient’s smile and oral health. It can also be a daunting task, especially as the number of practicing dentists continues to increase rapidly throughout the country.

There used to be little choice as to which dentist to visit. Teeth cleaning, x-rays and dental operations were performed by whichever dentist served a particular area or insurance company.

Now, more than ever, individuals are choosing their own dentist in hopes of finding a friend and ally ready to help create a gorgeous smile while offering a pleasant dental experience.

When choosing a dentist, it is important to consider a few key things. Location and office hours are important in terms of convenience. The dental office should be located close to work or home and offer hours compatible with an individual’s lifestyle.

Word-of-mouth referrals from friends and family are one of the best ways to find a reputable dentist as well as knowing which dentists to avoid. Most dental offices now have Web sites that offer valuable information about the dentists practicing at the office and usually include each dentist’s basic background information, education and dental specialties.

Information to look for when reading through a particular dentist’s Web site include things such as what extra charges or costs are involved should an appointment be missed or cancelled, x-ray requirements and costs, and costs related to any extra services.

It is also important to note how far in advance cleanings and appointments should be scheduled.

Emergency dental services should be available for any dental crises. This information can also be obtained by calling the dental office. Look for dental offices with receptionists that are friendly, timely, and helpful.

A basic information check should be performed on any potential dentists before the initial visit. Check that they have earned a degree from a reputable school and are up to date with their licensing and educational requirements. They will preferably be keeping up with the latest dental technologies and trends.

Always be sure that they support up-to-date dental insurance. The best dentists consistently provide cutting edge dental care while striving to create and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile for their patients.

Payment should be discussed ahead of time with estimates being given for any and all services. If dental insurance will be used, always check to be sure the dentist that has been chosen accepts the specific insurance. If not, a new dentist may need to be selected. Discuss payment plan options ahead of time, especially for expensive procedures.

When visiting a dentist for the first time, the dentist should be professional and friendly. Questions should be asked based upon the individual patient’s needs and concerns.

If phobias and pain are concerns, patients should express this during an initial visit with a dentist and determine what can be done to alleviate them. Many dentists are willing to go above and beyond to cater to patients with these specific concerns.

A basic oral history should be reviewed before hand, and future treatment and prevention options should be discussed. A good dentist will work to make a patient comfortable and should have a pleasant chair-side manner.

First impressions mean a lot when choosing a dentist. If the dentist, hygienists or office staff create an atmosphere that is anything less than professional or pleasant, a new dentist should be searched for.

The best dentists offer friendly, happy dental experiences. They consider the preferences and concerns of their patients and offer exceptional, cutting-edge dental services.

Teeth are important to overall health and appearance and should be trusted with only the best of dentists. Finding a good dentist should involve finding a friend and ally in the dental industry who consistently keeps the health and beauty of their patient’s smile a top priority.

How to. . . Choose an insurance agent Many people struggle to find the best insurance agent. It can be

complicated knowing whether a specific agent is looking out for your needs or their own commission.

Sometimes people do not know the best ways to go about finding an agent. It is important to ensure that you have the correct insurance in order to protect yourself, and you can do this with the help of an insurance agent.

Before selecting the type of insurance that you want, you will need to find an experienced agent. It is crucial to research agents and make sure that you are choosing one who is reputable. You may want to ask family members and friends if they recommend their insurance agents.

If you are recommended an agent, chances are you will be just as pleased as your friends and family members. A good agent will do their work correctly and professionally in order to continue receiving referrals. If you choose an agent and are pleased, your agent will hope that you recommend their services to others.

If you do not have an agent recommended to you, you can still do outside research. If you choose to do business with a larger insurance company, their agents will often be more consistent from office to office because of standardized training and practices.

Take a lot of care when shopping for the best agent. Treat this research as you would purchasing a new car or home. Make sure that you pick a company that is highly reviewed and highly rated. You will also want to consider making sure that all licensing is in order for the agent that you choose.

Once you decide on some possible agents, it is a good idea to meet with the agents. Have a list of questions and concerns so that you can get any questions that you have answered. Make sure that you feel comfortable with the agent’s answers.

If you feel as if an agent is trying to get you to purchase a policy that is not appropriate, this is not a good sign. Some agents may try too hard to up-sell a policy. Alert your agent that you are looking for more information and are not ready to agree

on a policy right away. If you choose a good agent, they will allow you to take your time and gather all of the important research needed to make your decision.

Also, make sure that your agent is willing to have a relationship with you. You do not only want to have a policy sold to you. With a relationship, you will be able to contact your agent if you have any questions or concerns. This can include receiving help with filing a claim.

Take caution to choose an agent that is reputable. If your agent has been in the business for many years, chances are they will better understand the policies that they sell and be able to take extra care to ensure that you are properly protected.

It is important to get the correct insurance in order to protect you and your financial future. The right research needs to be done in order to assure that you are getting the right insurance policy.

You, your family and your finances will benefit from your efforts. You will be better protected with the help of a good insurance agent.

What is Culture Change? Culture Change (also known as person – centered care or resident –directed care) transforms the long-term care medical model to one that nurtures the human spirit as well as meeting medical needs. Culture Change is not a finite

destination – it is a work in progress, always evolving to meet the needs of the residents.

Goals of Culture Change are: • Restore control over daily living to residents of long-term care facilities,

respecting the right of residents to make their own decisions;• Involve all levels of staff in the care process, honoring those who work most

closely with residents;• Include families and friends in a comprehensive team building approach to care;• Provide a familiar and hospitable environment, a supportive workplace and

responsive, individualized care practices that focus on the needs and preferences of people, rather than those of the facility.

Some benefits of Culture Change are:• Resident’s benefits: reduces loneliness, helplessness and boredom; improves

physical and mental health (ex. Reduces depression and behavioral problems); reduces unanticipated weight loss, reduces mortality.

• Staffing benefits: reduces employee turnover, eliminates temporary agency staffing and mandatory overtime.

• Additional benefits: significantly improves employee, resident, and family satisfaction: increases involvement with the outside community including children, students, clubs, and religious organizations.

Examples of Culture Change Practices:• Resident Direct Committees• Residents direct their care Use of I care plans ex. of a goal would be instead of

ambulation 2X a day would be I like to walk. I will walk after lunch and dinner.

• Resident choose when they want to get up and go to bed

• Residents choose what they want to eat

• Residents choose how and when they want to bathe

• Residents are encouraged to be bring in room décor and personal belongings to make them feel more at home

To find out if a nursing home is Culture Change call them and ask them. If they don’t know what Culture Change is then they are not a culture change facility. Also go there and ask culture change questions and see for yourself. Culture change is not just items it’s a way of life. There are many websites you can visit to get the information that you want to know. The information in this article is from www.manhr.org.

If you planned your pregnancy, you probably already started looking for care as well as handling the other needs that come with having a baby, such as a car seat. However, if your pregnancy caught you by surprise, it is important to find maternity care suited to you as

quickly as possible.

The average cost of having a baby is $6,000 to $12,000. Expenses will go up if there are complications such as needing neonatal intensive care from giving birth to a preterm child.

Learn which practitioners your insurance will cover and what type of care will be paid for. If you have no insurance, check with social services in your state because Medicaid may be provided for expectant mothers.

Ask a trustworthy medical professional to recommend a board-certified doctor. You can also search for doctors by zip code on the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists website, www.acog.org. Also, ask family and friends for a recommendation.

Costs can increase dramatically if you are placed under high-risk care or need multiple ultrasounds, specialists or fetal testing to ensure the baby is developing properly. If you can find a service that offers most or all of these services in one area, then much stress will be reduced.

Pregnancy comes with enough anxieties without having to worry about if you have selected the right provider for care throughout your term, delivery and postpartum recovery.

After figuring out who your insurance will cover, the next decision is to determine who will deliver your baby. This is a person with whom you will want to feel comfortable because you will see this person frequently before delivery, giving you instructions on what you need to do to care for your health as well as that of your unborn infant.

Where you wish to deliver is important to discuss to be sure the provider can be covered at the location. Most obstetricians must deliver at a hospital in case of complications, so be sure to choose the hospital they can attend.

If you do not feel comfortable taking certain prescribed medications or participating in suggested procedures (such as amniocentesis), you should be permitted to speak up and not feel pressured or forced into something you do not support.

Your provider should assist you in creating a birth plan so your wishes during delivery are accommodated as much as possible.

Ask questions to make an informed decision. Get information on what to expect. Remember, your health and your baby’s health are what are most important.

Now more than ever, an accountant is indispensable to the success of every business. But there’s a daunting array of accountants and firms to choose from — from sole practitioners to huge national firms, from generalists to highly specialized CPAs.

The Industry itself is changing rapidly. Tax returns, financial statements, and other compliance items have become mature services — they have become commodities. Quality, timeliness and the physical end product are given.

So how do you choose the right accountant? Start by considering your needs and preferences: Size: Is the one-on-one contact what you are looking for? Or will you feel more comfortable

dealing with a team dedicated to your account? You may not be getting what — and who — you think you’re paying for.

Specialization: Small firms may not have access to the expertise you need. Accounting is a wide profession, so most accountants narrow their range of specialty. It is nearly impossible to handle all areas well. Find out which areas a firm concentrates in or has access to. Some firms belong to nationwide networks of similar firms, to whom they can turn for help on specialized issues.

Complexity: Do you need a firm just to prepare a tax return and year-end financial statements? Perhaps you also need tax and financial planning advice, help with your business plan, or retirement planning options. Do you need assistance with employee benefit plan options, advice on re-engineering your operations for maximum efficiency and tax advantage?

The big picture: Develop a picture of your needs to ensure that your accountant cannot only meet those needs but also expected — and unforeseen — future needs. Accountants able to deal with only one piece of your financial picture may fail to see the forest for the trees.

Reputation: Talk to your friends and business associates. Does their accountant contact them throughout the year, not just at tax time, with proactive advice and recommendations? Real value from an accounting firm means superior service, a forward-thinking attitude and a relationship you can rely on.

If your friends and business associates had to choose another accountant, whom would they choose? A firm’s reputation among non-clients is almost as important as its track record with

existing clients. Finally, consider the “relationship fit” — do you get along with the individual? Do you share a similar outlook and philosophy? Does he or she show a real interest in your business?

Qualifications: It’s uncommon, but some people who offer “accounting services” are unqualified. Accountants who have the certified public accountant (CPA) designation must adhere to certain accounting standards. Check also for appropriate educational background and membership in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and any state’s Society of CPA’s. These organizations require continuing professional education of members throughout their careers — approved courses to stay current with the latest accounting and tax changes. Certain industries also require compliance with further accounting standards and additional industry specific CPE.

Firms belonging to key practice sections of the AICPA also go through peer review to maintain membership in those sections. Peer review requires a firm to submit to an inspection periodically, where other firms check their work and verify adherence to standards. Look for a firm with a history of “unqualified” peer reviews, indicating full compliance with quality standards and practices.

Final thoughts: Above all, your primary factor in choosing an accountant should be the value he or she can bring to the relationship. Why would clients underestimate their CPA’s value, unless they can’t identify the value a CPA brings to a relationship? Evaluating such elements as a proactive approach to your total financial picture, the ability to bring specialized expertise to your situation, and superior professional credentials will help you make an informed decision on the CPA’s skills and ability to address your unique needs.

When you are furnishing your home, the right appliances are very important. To find the right appliances, you need to pick an appliance store.

Good quality products and excellent customer service are two important things to look for. Buying the right appliance can help make your life easier, but it is easy to spend too much money when doing so.

Once you choose the right store, you have a much better chance at buying the best appliance that will meet your needs for a long time to come. You also increase the chances of getting good customer service as well as the best price available.

So how does one go about picking a good appliance store? What are the important qualities to look at? The first thing you should do is find as many customer comments as are available. Consumer reviews gives you an advanced look into the other people’s experiences with that store without having to go through the process yourself.

Using the Internet is a great way to find customer reviews on appliance stores. If you are looking into an appliance store that has a Web site, there are usually areas where customers can review the services and the products.

Consumer Reports and the Better Business Bureau also offer reviews of stores and products on their websites. Those websites are www.consumerreports.org and www.BBB.org. For any store to be accredited by the Better Business Bureau, there must be a judgment made that they are reliable and reputable. Searching online for appliance shops or something similar will also turn up a wealth of information.

Another step in finding the right appliance store is to check out the advertisements. Various appliance shops will mark down certain appliances while raising the price on others to offset costs. It is important to stay as up to date as possible on which stores are offering what deals.

Some appliance stores will offer promotional pricing where they will match any offer that you have as long as you bring in an advertisement.

Try to do some research ahead of time to avoid having to make a snap decision. Doing the research before your refrigerator stops working takes the stress away from the purchase.

Make sure you evaluate the store policies regarding warranties and repairs before you are forced into a purchase. Understanding the life cycle of your appliances is helpful so that you can be prepared when something does wear out and needs to be replaced. Can the store you purchased the appliance from repair it if it quits working? You should consider where appliances are manufactured and availability of parts if units fail and need to be serviced.

Keep in mind that appliance sales run in their own seasons. In the winter, it’s easier to find good sales on dryers and washers. In the spring, look for sales on refrigerators. And cooking appliances go on sale in the fall.

Finally, you should shop for new appliances with a checklist. This will help to remind you for the factors that are important to you when making your purchase.

When doing your appliance store research, keep track of things such as the range of products, delivery services, prices and warranty options. This will make it much easier to compare the different stores.

Keeping these practices in mind will help you with choosing the right store and ensuring that the appliance you purchase really will make your life easier without breaking the bank.

cabinet in your parent’s home after he has either taken too much medicine or stopped taking it completely and discover that your father has medical issues that you never knew existed.

Finding out that your mother is no longer able to remember when the last time she ate can is heartbreaking. Learning that none of your father ’s bills have been paid because he is no longer aware of what the mailbox or check book are is devastating. Working with hundreds of adult children over the years, I have learned that “one of the hardest things” that many of them have ever done was to make the decision to admit a parent to a long-term care facility. Given the choice, none of us would choose to go through any of those situations. However, according to Caregiving in the U.S., there are 43.5 million caregivers in the U.S. providing care for an adult family member or friend 50 years old or older. As the population in this country continues to age, that number will grow. Thus, it is important to develop a proactive plan to lessen the stress and burden when the time comes to parent your parent.

Because discussing such issues with parents is so uncomfortable, most of us avoid doing so until a crisis occurs and there is no longer an alternative. Until an adult child is confronted with the dilemma of acting as the legal decision maker for a parent, he or she may have no idea what type of insurance coverage the parent has, where important documents are kept, what medications they take, when the last time they went to the doctor was, how many different physicians they see and for what conditions. The goal is to make informed decisions for our parents when they need us. In order to make the best choices during an emergency, children need to learn as much as possible about the parent’s life before the crisis occurs.

The more knowledgeable adult children are of parents’ affairs before an emergency, the better equipped they will be to deal with the issues that have to be addressed. If the child is already aware of insurance and financial issues when they are called in the middle of the night to the hospital to assist with an admission, the confusion and stress are greatly reduced for all involved. Taking care of the “business” part of things before anything happens will allow everyone to focus on the needs of the people involved rather than the requirements of an institution. There are some things that can be done now to make future illness and emergencies more manageable.

• Begin discussing potential issues with parents before there are any problems. In most instances, it is much easier to speak of hypothetical situations than ones that are currently troubling them. However, facing one’s mortality and possible future disabilities is not pleasant and you may have to address the topic several times before some parents will begin to talk about it. The key is to start early and let them know it is important to you to be prepared “just in case.”

• If a parent is driving, take the time about once a month to ride with them or observe them from a far while they are driving. When you visit, inspect the vehicle for unexplained dents and scrapes. At the first signs of impairment, begin to discuss alternate transportation such as senior buses or private transportation providers. As a child, it is sometimes impossible to take car keys away from the person who taught you to drive. However, it is worse to have to deal with the results of an accident that he caused. If you are unable to enforce the decision, contact the local police department for assistance.

• Know where important documents are located (i.e. insurance cards, advance directives, bank account information). Some people are very private and do not want their children to have access to financial information. Suggest that they begin to keep the information in one location such as a specific drawer or cabinet with the agreement that it will not be opened unless needed.

• Be aware of whether or not advance directives have been executed and encourage parents to do so if they have not (i.e. living will, durable power of attorney (POA) for healthcare

and finance). Creating these documents is difficult for some older adults because it reminds them of impending mortality. To ease anxiety, you can complete the same documents to show your parent that by doing so they are not “making the time come sooner.” In reality, everyone needs to have advance directives in place regardless of age. If financial issues are difficult to discuss, build up to financial POA by executing the durable healthcare power of attorney first. Explain that the provisions of the documents do not become effective until the guarantor is no longer capable of making decisions for herself.

• Ask them to keep a list of current medications, physicians and diagnosis in their wallet or purse. If someone is taken to the hospital by ambulance, that information needs to be given to the medical staff immediately. It is much more convenient and efficient to produce a list of medications than a bag full of prescription bottles. Most pharmacies routinely provide such information.

• Know what insurance is active; just because someone has the tradition red, white, and blue Medicare card does not mean that it is effective. Many seniors have given up traditional Medicare for other options such as Advantra or Secure Horizons. While they have received a new card for the new insurance, most keep the original Medicare card which can easily be given to a hospital by a child who is unaware of a parent’s affairs.

• Spend time in the home, check medicine planners to make sure pills have been taken and none are missing beyond the current date and time. Observe the overall appearance; make sure the mail has been checked and you do not see any unopened envelopes piled up. Look inside cabinets, making sure they are stocked as usual and there are no strange items that do not belong.

• Talk about care options regarding assisted living, supportive living, and long-term care before they are needed. Encourage your parent to research and tour communities and let you know which ones they prefer. While having to leave one’s home is never easy, it is less threatening when the individual has been allowed to participate in the decision making process.

• In the event you get involved in a parent’s affairs after problems have begun, be patient and remember it is a very humbling experience for them. If you have problems getting them to share information with you, enlist the help of a professional such as a physician or social worker for assistance.

These are just a few things to consider as the time comes for roles to change and the parent to begin needing more support than the child. The hardest part is the first conversation. By initiating a discussion with your parent regarding any of these issues, the dialogue has begun. Even if it takes some time for her to open up about private details, the first step has been taken. Taking the time and making the effort to discuss potentially uncomfortable matters with parents before there are any problems will make the “crisis” times much less stressful. Just as there is no handbook for the correct way to raise children, there is no right or wrong way to “parent your parent.” If you have questions, do not hesitate to reach out to your Area Agency on Aging for answers and advice.

How to. . .

When you are looking for a home remodeling company, it is important to understand what jobs the home improvement contractor will do in your home.

There are different tasks in the home that will require different contractors. As an example, if you are undergoing a remodeling project in a bathroom, it will probably be necessary to employ a plumber. The remodeling of a deck or garage may require the expertise of a carpenter or a mason. Because of this, the first step is to know the type of home remodeling company which you will require for your project, and any particular area of expertise they might specialize in.

When you have determined the type of company that is required, there are several things to discuss when you meet with the contractor in order to determine whether or not they are right for the job.

Ensure that the contractor is one who will be helpful and knowledgeable when it comes to the required job. You are the one who will know what you want your home to look like, so you want to make sure that the contractor will follow your guidelines and communicate the process to you.

Because the contractor will be responsible for overseeing the renovation and executing the construction process from the beginning of the project until the end, you will need an individual who will answer any concerns or questions that arise. They shouldn’t hesitate to tell you the truth about your project.

You also want to ensure that you are given good estimates for the cost of the project. Make sure that the estimates are all in writing. You also want to make sure that you evaluate the contract or invoice so that you are positive that all required tasks are included in the total estimate.

Another beneficial tip for selecting a home remodeling company is evaluating the type of warranty that they offer. You want a company that will fully back their work. You want them to be responsible during the project as well as after should anything go awry after the completion of the project.

It is possible for certain things to pass unnoticed at the beginning and get left until after the

project has been finished. After paying large amounts of money for a project, there is nothing worse than realizing that the job was not done correctly. Finding a company that supports their work and does not charge for overlooked items is an essential aspect of choosing a home remodeling company.

Hopefully, this will give you the help you need to choose an honest, reputable home remodeling company that will be able to complete your project to your satisfaction at a fair price. Don’t just pick the first name that you find or go with the company that has the most reasonable price.

By taking all these factors into account, you will be better prepared to choose a remodeling company that will not only get the work you need done right, but also stand behind any work they have completed.

Choose a document shredding companyHow to. . .

Document Shredding is one service that many companies fail to recognize the need for. The days of simply throwing your documents and materials into the trash are over.

Discarded information on documents is a significant source of Identity Theft. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates that as many as 9 million Americans become identity theft victims each year. No company is too small to be a target.

What are the implications if your sensitive information fell into the wrong hands? If confidential information is exposed, your business could be subject to fines, and criminal

charges and your business reputation could be ruined if your company fails to take the necessary precautions to protect your confidential documents. Fines, Law Suits, and Criminal charges for not discarding confidential information correctly has reached an all time high.

Shredding documents in an office shredder is a good, but It takes a lot of extra time away from your employees to shred documents on their own and most of the time there is no audit trail. It is beneficial to find a shredding company to protect your business, your employees, your clients and your business reputation. Every business that produces documents with confidential information should consider using a shredding service.

There are many things to consider when choosing a shredding service company. You may consider asking other area businesses who they utilize for there their services. It is best to get a recommendation of a company that is experienced and provides excellent service. The decision between mobile shredding and plant –based (off-site) shredding is really one between your comfort level and cost. There is an undeniable comfort level gained from seeing the mobile shredding truck do it’s work. However, if you are not concerned with seeing your information destroyed, you may consider plant based shredding.

Once you have chosen how you want your shredding done it is time to pick a contractor. The following are things to find out about any potential contractor:

Certifications – Is the contractor NAID AAA Certified? This is the most well known and respected in the industry today. Most shredding contractors have excellent security practices but

a NAID AAA Certification let’s you know they have been audited by a third party to verify it. Service Time – What is there their average service time? If you need service in one or two

days you need to make sure they can provide that scheduling. Do you need off hours or weekend pickups?

Laws and Compliancy – Does the contractor know the current State and Federal Laws? Can they help you create a Document Retention and Destruction Policy for your company?

References – Ask and check their references. Types of shred bins – If you need recurring service, what type of shredding bins do you need

or want. Ask what type of bins do they provide? Are the bins provided free or will you need to lease them?

Lock Security – If they provide you with a bin make sure your bin has a secure lock included. Recycling – Do they recycle what they shred? History- what is the contractor’s experience with shredding and document management? Are

they from the area? Pricing – How do they charge for their services? Are there any extra charges you should

expect? (ie. service charges, administrative fees, fuel surcharge) Consider your budget when choosing a company. It is best to get a couple of quotes. If you

want to make sure that you are not over spending, a quote will allow you to see if one company is over-charging for their services. You also want to avoid an unexpected bill.

Document Shredding Companies have become more popular. As more people become victims of identity theft, confidentiality is taken more seriously. Businesses are taking more steps to make sure that documents are destroyed correctly in order to protect themselves and their clients.

Every business should utilize consider utilizing a document shredding service. If you are looking to get rid of unusable documents, make sure that you dispose of the documents correctly. Document shredding will protect your company, your clients, your employees and your business reputation that you have worked hard to achieve. Find a good document shredding company that is Compliant, Cost Effective and Efficient.

How to. . .

Advertising is a powerful and somewhat frustrating marketing tool. It enables us to launch new products and services, increase sales, and increase awareness. Advertising involves making the right decisions, and what may be right for one company is usually not

appropriate for the next. If you want to answer the many questions you have, ensure that your dollars are generating a return, and take control of your advertising efforts, make sure that you have the following:

1. The Right Reason. First and foremost, start with the end in mind. What do you want to accomplish?

What market do you want to reach? What reaction or action do you want from this market once reached? How is your advertising campaign going to prompt this reaction or action? Spending the time upfront to clarify these objectives will make you money in the end.

It is also important to remember that nobody knows your business like you do. Rely on ad representatives for their expertise in the industry, but realize that you have to make decisions that fit for your company.

2. The Right Plan. Look at advertising as one part of your marketing plan. Having the right plan

means coordinating your efforts to get the most bang out of your buck! How will your advertising efforts fit in to all current marketing and promotional activity?

If you are engaging in direct mail or phone sales, ads should be timed to support these efforts! Don’t clutter ads, but do make sure to view advertising as a multi-faceted opportunity.

3. The Right Medium. With clear objectives, your next challenge is to determine which media is going to be

the most effective for you. We all have our preferences? some prefer print; others swear by radio or television.

Start with an idea of the target market you want to reach. With these answers, you can

then begin a fact-finding mission. Get in touch with your local media representatives and let them know your objectives, exactly who you are trying to reach, and an idea of your advertising budget as a whole. Have them provide you with information on how the use of their media will reach your objectives and your market. You now can make an educated choice.

4. The Right Message. Unless you have millions of dollars in your advertising budget, don’t try to mimic

those who do. Make sure your ads have substance and by following the tried-and-true rules below:

Gain Attention! Your ad needs to stand up, stand out, and grab the attention of your market. Capture your market and don’t distract them.

Create Interest & Desire. Once they’ve seen or heard your ad, you have to make it clear why they should care! It’s not about you; it’s about your market.

Offer an incentive whenever possible. Have them visit your Web site for additional information and special online coupons. Encourage them to call, as the first 50 responses will receive free information. Unless action is taken, you will be forgotten.

5. The Right Follow-Up. Advertising is an investment that requires a tracking system to ensure effectiveness.

The action requested in your ad (which should always be present) needs to be monitored. For instance, if you are directing people to your Web site, you need to make sure you are able to track the number of daily visitors to your site. Did your hits increase due to your ads? If you are prompting people to call, those inquiring should be asked how they heard of you.

Calls need to be logged, tracked, and reviewed. If you are prompting action in your ads, the right follow-up is all about information gathering. Make sure you have the systems and resources in place to meet anticipated response levels! Doing this will arm you with the information you need to make wise advertising decisions.

Choose the right windowsHow to. . .

Choosing appropriate windows for a residence or commercial building can be a dizzying experience. Functionality, aesthetics, placement, cost and efficiency are all factors which must be weighed equally.

Moreover, window terminology can be daunting and confusing, but with just a little education, you, too, can become a fenestration expert.

WINDOW GLAZINGThe glazing of a window refers to the actual glass in a window. Today, most structures are

built with double-glazed windows — meaning that there are two panes of glass in each frame. Many older buildings and homes still feature single-glazed windows, but caveat emptor:

windows with a single pane of glass aren’t very energy-friendly. Triple-glazed windows are the best, and as a result, more expensive.

R-VALUESAn R-value measures a window’s thermal resistance. In laymen’s terms, R-values indicate the

amount of heat lost through a window. The higher the R-value of a window, the more efficient it is. Typically, the lowest acceptable value for a residence is R-3.

U-VALUESA U-value — technically known as the overall heat transfer coefficient — measures the level at

which windows conduct heat. For residential windows, if efficiency is a concern, it’s important to use windows that let out

the least amount of heat. Therefore, the lower the U-factor of a window, the better. For those who live in colder windy climates, equal importance should be placed on the U- and

R-values of a window.LOW-ELow-emissive, or low-e, windows are one of the latest innovations in the energy-efficiency

market. Simply stated, low-e glass traps heat. Low-e is achieved by placing a thin metallic coating on the appropriate pane of a window.

Like U-values, those who live in more frigid climates should give serious consideration to low-e

windowing because indoor radiant heat is reflected back inside, thereby lessening the work of your home’s heater.

Conversely, in the summer, infrared heat from the sun is reflected away—thus making low-e windows a good choice for people in warmer regions as well.

UV FACTORSUV rays from solar penetration can wreak havoc on items inside a home or building by

causing furniture and carpets to fade in color. That’s why a window with high ultra-violet blockage is recommended, especially for people who live in hotter climates.

CASEMENT WINDOWSIf energy efficiency is of the utmost concern, casement windows are the best option. The

simple hinge-and-crank design diminishes air seepage, and when wind pushes against the glass, the window seal becomes tighter, further reducing leakage.

Generally speaking, casement windows are hinged on the sides, while windows hinged at the top are known as awning windows and bottom-hinged windows are called hoppers.

Hinged windows must be maintained properly, as the seal erodes over time. If left unchecked, continued erosion can render the window less efficient.

OTHER FACTORSAs taught in elementary school science classes, when there’s a large difference between indoor

and outdoor temperatures, condensation will form on glass. That’s why you should choose a window appropriate for your climate.

Window placement is another factor to consider when building. If you are looking to increase a structure’s passive solar efficiency, consider the position and location of the building relative to the sun. Windows that face the south let in more heat than north-facing windows.

Also, frames and seals can deteriorate quickly when dealing with extreme temperatures. It’s vital to choose windows with warm-air technology and decent spacers.

Lastly, to avoid fines and/or expensive re-windowing construction, be sure to research and adhere to any area building codes.

How to. . . Choose a bankMany consumers spend an inordinate amount of time considering

other financial transactions, but they rarely put so much effort into their choice of banks.

Banking services can influence a wide range of financial matters, and there are several details to consider when choosing a commercial bank.

Interest Rate and FeesThe true value of a bank account can be found in its interest rates. Each bank has a

slightly different interest rate for savings accounts, although most of them will adjust these rates based on the federal funds rate.

Differences in interest rates may seem insignificant, but they can result in big changes when large deposits are concerned.

Banks services also usually involve fees and penalties for certain transactions. A checking account might restrict the number of checks that you are allow to write per month before you pay a fee, or you might be required to maintain a minimum balance in your savings account.

Every bank has its own policies, and these should always be taken into account by anyone who is choosing a bank.

ConvenienceConvenience is another factor to consider when choosing a bank. Try to find one

that has plenty of convenient branch locations not just close to where you live, but wherever you might travel on a regular basis.

It’s more difficult to conduct financial matters when on the road if you’re using a local or regional bank. The important thing is that your bank is accessible when you need it.

There will most likely come a time when you have to stop at a bank on your way home from work or make a mad dash to deposit a check before a bank closes. Having a

convenient location (or several convenient locations) will make your life much easier.

Overdraft ProtectionAs much as you try to avoid it, the occasional overdraft happens to nearly everyone.

Each bank has specific policies regarding overdrafts. Some offer overdraft protection in the form of a high interest credit line that kicks in when you bounce a check, while other banks charge a fee for each overdraft.

Some banks don’t cover bounced checks at all. Consider the policies of your potential banks of choice before you come to a final decision.

Bank StabilityStability is an often overlooked element of commercial banking. When you deposit

money into a bank, it is important to consider the solvency of the bank’s balance sheet. Most funds held on deposit are invested by the bank under a fractional reserve

banking system, and a bank with a clean balance sheet can best weather the turbulence caused by market corrections.

Most banks are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation for up to $250,000 per depositor. This value can vary depending on the type and number of accounts held by a customer.

Your money should be safe in any bank, but failures can occur. A solid bank should have limited exposure to toxic assets that put its balance sheet at risk.

Services You NeedBanks offer a wide range of services. Whether you need to take out a loan or open

a checking account, choose a bank that satisfies your concerns with the lost cost and highest rate of return.

Careful and vigilant shoppers can expect positive experiences with a trustworthy commercial bank.

Choose a hospitalHow to. . .

There are truthfully many things to consider before making the decision to pursue a medical career. Are you interested in illness management, crisis intervention or preventive medicine? Do you wish to practice general medicine or specialize in a specific area of

medicine? What are the financial and educational requirements of the specific field of choice? Determining the answers to these and other questions before beginning a medical career will help ensure success and help you to decide which of the many fields of medicine you should strive for. Self-assessment, good planning and preparation are the key ingredients involved in attaining to your goal of becoming a medical professional. With those thoughts in mind, let’s consider some of the possibilities.

If your interest is in nursing, you are not alone. You keep company with 2.3 million nursing positions that exist in the world. There are three different educational requirements for nursing jobs. If you wish to be a registered nurse, then you will need a bachelor’s degree taking about four years to complete. If your goal is to be a licensed practical nurse, then you will be acquiring an associate’s degree in two years. A diploma nursing position can be obtained in three years administered through a hospital, but only a few hospitals continue to offer these programs. Nurses average about $45,000 to $55,000 a year in income but are worth their weight in gold. Good nurses are sympathetic, caring and responsible.

Alternative therapies are continuing to gain popularity as preventive medicine takes a firm hold in the medical profession. If this is your passion for healthcare, becoming a chiropractor might suit you. Chiropractors are required to complete four years of undergraduate schooling. Then they must also complete four years of chiropractic college courses. Chiropractors are required to pass a national and state examination. The chiropractor’s approach to healthcare is holistic or treating the entire body. They believe that spinal dysfunctions attribute to illness and so they treat illness by adjusting the spine.

They usually are against pharmaceutical drugs, surgery and other unnatural remedies. Concentration is on nutrition, rest, exercise and environment.

There are a wide range of medical careers to choose from and not all of them require eight to ten years of education. A medical assistant position can be obtained with only a one or two year program at a vocational or technical school. The pay for a medical assistant position averages about $24,000 a year. An EMT or emergency medical technician must have a formal education and pass state exams, but many vocational schools offer a four month program to obtain these. EMT will be trained in virtually every type of emergency situation. This can be a very demanding and stressful position and the pay averages about $27,000 to $32,000. Many EMT continue their training at night and go on to become a paramedic.

Financial concerns are always at the top of the list when considering the educational needs of pursuing a medical career. Grants, student loans, scholarships and other funding programs are always available for any type of education. The suggestion is to apply for every possible financial assistance program available in order to reach your goal. Students.gov offers a wide variety of information in obtaining financial aid for higher education. Whichever field of medicine you decide to enter, rest assured that your choice will be accompanied with a good quality of education, life-saving value and a rewarding sense of accomplishment.

How to. . .

Whether you choose a manual or riding mower, make sure the equipment fits your needs.

There are many considerations when purchasing the right lawn mower. Answering some simple questions first to evaluate your particular needs may make your choices easier to manage.

Lawn mowers come in such a variety of sizes, types, and price ranges that you should do some careful research before purchasing one. There are a whole range of things to consider, such as the kind and size of your lawn, what you can afford, how long the lawn mower will last, and even your mechanical abilities because all lawn mowers need some maintenance.

The best way to begin your research is by taking a careful look at your lawn. If you are replacing your old mower, you probably already have a good idea of what will work for you. If you have just moved into a home, you need to know how many square feet of lawn you have. Do you have a lot or one or more acres to mow? This is important because recommendations for various mowers are partially based on lawn size.

Take these steps when you are preparing to purchase a lawnmower:

• Carefully walk around your lawn. Is it smooth? Does it have shady spots that are always wet? Does it have a problem with surface roots from a tree? What kind of of obstacles are on the lawn? Planter boxes, trees, bushes, patios, walls, and other obstacles can make maneuverability a very important factor. Is your lawn level, or is it on a slope? Since it is usually difficult to push a mower uphill, a self-propelled lawn mower may be the most prudent choice for a sloping lawn.

• Take a realistic look at yourself. Do you really enjoy working in the yard? If not, you will probably hire a lawn service in a month or two. If you do enjoy working in the yard, will you also feel comfortable cleaning the air filter, changing the oil, and checking spark plugs? A good quality mower will last for many years if it is maintained properly. A poorly maintained mower will soon have to be replaced.

• The next thing to consider is your budget. What can you realistically afford? How long will you live in this home? Will you need your mower in two years? Five years?

Once you have answered these basic questions, you can begin your research.

Walk behind mowers allow you to get some exercise as you mow. Do you prefer to use a self-propelled mower? What is your price range? What kind of transmission will you need? Manual or automatic? Automatic transmissions provide a much greater east-of-use and efficiency. Do you have the strength to pull the cord to start your mower or do you need an automatic starter? Perhaps you have not even thought about the following points.

Consider the versatility of the equipment.

Besides mowing and perfecting the yard and lawn, what other tasks will you or would you like to use your mower to perform? Consider other task possibilities for your core tasks such as:

• Light hauling such as mulch or dirt.• Heaving hauling for larger loads or rocks.• Tilling/Plowing that tomato garden.• Fertilizing/Seeding the lawn or garden.• Grading your driveway.• Shrub removal.• Handling snow.• Tending to animals.• Maintaining pastures and fields.

Mulching—cuts grass clippings into fine pieces that can help fertilize your lawn. No bagging of clippings is required.

Rear bagger—collects clippings for an immaculate lawn. A rear bag is preferable to a side bag for use around fences, trees and other obstacles.

Side discharge—clippings are dispersed back onto the lawn. Use if you have a few obstacles to deal with or to cut high grass.

Riding lawn equipment for light duty with engine horsepower ranging from 10 to 25 HP is good for mowing grass, light grading, tilling and hauling smaller loads.

Safety. Safety should be a critical factor in your purchasing decision. What systems can you rely on to keep you and others safe? There are rollover protective structures for larger equipment, operator presence system so that if you dismount your riding mower it will shut off. There are color coded levers on some units and safety interlock systems. There are some very well designed and safe products available.

Remember, no matter which type of lawn mower you choose, be sure it has an automatic shutoff if it tips over, the handle is disengaged or you dismount it automatically shuts off.

Service and MaintenanceWhat is included in your maintenance agreement and do you have one? Can you get service

from the dealer after you buy your mower?

It’s not always easy to get your mower annual maintenance. Maintaining your equipment leads to hassle free ownership, better resale value and less headaches in general.

Don’t have a truck? Some dealers offer mobile maintenance service. Service should include the following:

• Change engine oil and filter.• Change air filter and -cleaner.• Change spark plugs.• Change fuel filter.• Change transmission oil and filter.• Change engine coolant.• Change hydraulic filter.• Sharpen mower blades.• Check safety systems.• Check tire pressure and check mower desk level.• Check/tighten hardware.• Clean engine, battery, radiator and mower.• Lubricate tractor and mower.• Check belts and mower adjustments.

Financial strategies. One-on-one advice.

Member SIPC

How to. . . Choose a financial advisorFinding the right financial advisor for your situation is essential for your

financial health. Think of it this way: Choosing a financial advisor who’s right for your specific financial situation is similar to choosing the right nutrition program for your specific body type.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MINDSince not every diet program is suited for your specific health and wellness needs, not every

financial advisor is suited for your financial wellness needs. You want to be able to rely on your financial advisor’s advice when it comes to trimming your expenditures and what to do to save for retirement the same way you rely on your doctor for keeping your body trim and fit.

Be sure to do your homework before starting a relationship with a financial advisor. Before making a choice, perform a background check on the financial advisors on your list and

review their credentials. Your financial advisor must have the necessary training from an accredited institution and the prescribed certification for your state in order to be a true financial advisor.

Ask yourself the following questions:• How many years of experience does the financial advisor have?• Have any complaints been filed against the financial advisor?• What awards, if any, has the financial advisor received?• Can the financial advisor provide concrete proof of a satisfied clientele?Answers to these questions are key when searching for a financial advisor who will meet your

specific needs.AREAS OF EXPERTISE

There’s a complete buffet of financial products that can contribute to your financial well-being. Everything from bonds to mutual funds and commodities to stocks are common investing tools. However, depending upon your appetite for risk, some investment vehicles are better for your portfolio than others. You want to find a financial advisor who’s an expert in customizing a financial plan for your benefit, not for your detriment.

Consider the specific segment of the market in which you want to invest your money. Look for a financial advisor specializing in that particular investment type. For example, you might want

to invest in the commodities market. If your potential financial advisor has little experience in the commodities market, consider a different choice on your candidate list.

RATE OF SUCCESSTake a look at the rate of success each potential candidate has. Has the rate of return of his

recommendations outpaced the average market rate of return over the last year, five years, or ten years? One indicator of a solid rate of return is how well a financial advisor conducts research to strengthen his clients’ portfolios.

Here’s where experience plays an important role. This is especially important in tough economic times. How well has your financial advisor-candidate weathered past economic recessions for his clients? Do his clients continue to thrive in a bleak financial environment? On the other hand, have his clients experienced multiple hits to their portfolios?

That’s why an advisor’s success is well worth your consideration.FEES OR COMMISSIONS?

Ask your financial advisor about her compensation. Is she fee-based or commission-based? That will make a difference in your final selection. After all it’s your money you’re investing, not your financial advisor’s money.

A commission-based advisor is more apt to suggest financial products that favor her compensation. Such a situation could needlessly increase your exposure to market risk. Only go with a commission-based advisor if she has a proven track record of success and has your best interest in mind.

If you feel the need to guarantee that your best interest will be served, go with a fee-based advisor. A fee-based advisor is compensated only for the time spent on servicing your portfolio.

INTERVIEWFinally, make arrangements to meet the top candidates on your financial advisor list. Get a feel for

how the financial advisor will treat you as his or her client. Will he act condescending toward you and your ideas? Will she have the heart of a teacher when addressing your concerns? A good way to do that is to ask direct questions regarding experience, services and financial products offered, and the fee schedule. How your financial advisor-candidate answers your questions will give you a solid idea of which one is right for you.

How to. . .What to look for in a nursing facility –Here are a few things to look for when choosing a nursing facility for your loved

one:Is the facility clean?Does it have an odor? Are the hallways unobstructed? Are staff members courteous to residents and their families?Does staff respond in a timely manner to the residents’ needs? Are the rooms bright and pleasant? Is timely assistance provided to patients who need to be fed?Is food well presented and appetizing?May you eat with your loved one?Who Pays for the Nursing Facility Stay?MEDICARE: If your loved one has spent three midnights at a hospital as an

“admitted” (versus “observation”) patient, and has met hospital level criteria during their stay, he/she may be eligible for Medicare coverage at a Skilled Nursing Facility.

ILLINOIS PUBLIC AID: If your loved one cannot afford out-of-pocket expenses for a nursing facility, he/she may be eligible for Illinois Public Aid. If you are an individual or couple depending on your assets and level of income each month, you may be eligible to receive assistance for your medical bills and nursing home care if your total assets do not exceed required limits. To obtain further information on the asset and income limits, contact your local Department of Human Services (DHS) office or 800-843-6154 or website www.dhs.state.il.us.

When you request financial assistance from the local DHS office, you will be required to fill out a financial statement listing your assets, income, and verification of your financial statement and supporting documentation. The DHS offices will notify you of needed information.

This process can be somewhat confusing as there are many questions related to the process. The nursing facility can help and answer many of these questions.

HMOs (Private Insurance): HMOs all have different benefits, eligibilities, etc.

Many private insurance companies have a “deductible” for nursing facility care; the deductibles vary. For best results, refer to your insurance booklet or call your insurance company for your “Skilled Care or Long Term Care Benefits”.

What about Medicare coverage? (Does not include Medicare HMO’s)When the hospital care team, including your physician, feels that your loved one

requires “skilled care” at a nursing care facility, this means that the following services may be needed: IV medications, wound care, new tube feeding care, rehabilitative services (to name a few). When your loved one meets the requirements for “skilled care” the Medicare benefits are as follows:

Medicare Benefit Medicare PaysDays 1-20 100%Days 21-100 All but $141.50/dayDays 101+ NothingMany times residents are not eligible or do not use their total 100 days in the

nursing facility. The nursing facility will let you know when your loved one no longer meets Medicare criteria. They will then help you plan for the care of your loved one whether it is long term care or an alternate plan.

What if We Choose Hospice at a Nursing Facility? You may choose Hospice care during your loved one’s nursing facility stay. Your

loved one will receive additional services from Hospice at the nursing facility such as: Volunteers, Nurses, Chaplains, and Social Workers. Medicare does not cover your room & board at a nursing facility while on Hospice. Please ask the long term facility Social Service staff for further information.

These “Basic Tips” were compiled by the area Long Term Care Community Coalition. For further tips, please consult the Social Service/Care Management Department at your hospital of choice or your area nursing care facilities.

To join a credit union, you must be eligible for membership. Most credit unions are organized to serve people in a particular community, group or groups of employees or members of an organization or association.

A little history…President Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act in 1934, forming a national system

to charter and supervise federal credit unions. Since the signing of the act, credit unions have continued to steadily grow.

During the 1990s and into the 21st century, credit unions have been healthy and growing. There are over 100 million consumers that are members of credit unions.

Is My Money Safer in a Bank or Credit Union? Most credit unions are insured though the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).

NCUA is the independent federal agency that regulates, charters and supervises federal credit unions. Some credit unions provide additional excess share (deposit) insurance.

Monies deposited in a bank are usually insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The FDIC preserves and promotes public confidence in the U.S. financial system by insuring deposits in banks; by identifying, monitoring and addressing risks to the deposit insurance funds; and by limiting the effect on the economy and the financial system when a bank fails.

Local Financial Institutions:Several financial institutions are located in Madison County, so shop around to find one that

best meets your needs. Make a list of things that are important to you, and see how your financial institution stacks up.

BANKS: Generate profit for stockholders. Decisions are based on what will give stockholders more profit.

CREDIT UNIONS: Not for profit, not for charity, but for service. Decisions are based on what’s best for the members. Credit unions exist to help people, not make a profit.

BANKS: Income is returned to the stockholders in the form of higher dividends on their shares of stock.

CREDIT UNIONS: Income is returned to members in the form of better savings rates, lower loan rates, and low or no fees for services.

BANKS: The Board of Directors is paid a salary. Daily operations are performed by a paid staff.CREDIT UNIONS: Each credit union is governed by a board of directors, elected by and from

the credit union’s membership. Board members serve voluntarily. Daily operations are performed by a paid staff.

BANKS: Only people who own stock can vote for the Board of Directors. The customers who use the bank don’t have a say.

CREDIT UNIONS: Members have equal ownership and one vote – regardless of how much money a member has on deposit. At a credit union, every customer is a member and an owner.

When you know the differences between banks and credit unions, you can make informed decisions about where to deposit your money. You will find that credit unions can be an excellent alternative to banks and other financial institutions, with comparable, competitive services and rates.

Credit Unions return income to members in the form of better savings rates, lower loan rates, and low or no fees for services.

How to. . .

In the summer, there seems to be nothing more important than good air conditioning. In the winter, nothing is more important than an effective heating system.

The key to getting great heating and air conditioning service is finding the right HVAC company. It’s been said that an HVAC company is like a spouse. Good ones are helpful, reliable and there for you in your times of need, whereas bad ones will cost you a lot of money, cause you many headaches and put you in uncomfortable situations.

Word of mouth will provide the best recommendations for an HVAC company. Ask your family and friends who they’ve had good experience using. When you hear the same name more than once, that’s a good sign.

Make sure that you let the company know that they were recommended by people close to you. This will let them know that they need to do a good job or other customers will hear about it and maybe consider taking their business to another company.

When researching any sort of company, you’ll want to check with the Better Business Bureau. For an HVAC company, check with your state’s board of contractors. You can also check the local mechanical inspection office to be really thorough.

You want to make sure any company you use is reputable. Unfortunately today many are not as reputable as we’d like to think.

Ask the difficult questions. What are their prices? Do they offer a guarantee or warranty? What are their usual turnaround times? What manufacturers do they use?

You’ll also want to know if the company has insurance and is bonded for accidents that are likely to happen occasionally. This can save you from having to file a claim on your homeowners insurance should any mishaps take place that cause damage to your property during the installation.

HVAC companies that are quality businesses will usually have a membership in

a reputable professional organization. Some well-known organizations include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Belonging to one of these organizations shows that the company you’re considering knows their business.

Make sure to check for proper permits. An HVAC company getting the proper permits can save a homeowner many headaches. Load calculation is another thing that will save you from plenty of problems in the future.

It’s a good idea to have a load calculation performed before installing a new system in any building. The company that you select should be willing to do so. There are HVAC companies that will use a general rule of thumb to size the necessary equipment instead of double checking, and some companies will just install the same size of equipment as equipment that is being replaced.

These methods can cause unnecessary problems for you. Many times you don’t know if a load calculation was done when the first system was installed and changes in the building have probably taken place over the years.

A system that’s too big will be inefficient and cause big problems. A system that’s too small won’t be able to heat or cool the larger area. When you have the system that is installed to fit the needs of the building, you will save money and be much happier.

Following this advice will help you find an HVAC company that will help save you some money and leave you satisfied with their work.

How to. . .

Choosing a college or university is an important, very personal decision that you should research extensively. Crucial selection criteria can help when sorting through admission catalogs and visiting websites or local college fairs.

Prepare a list of five to seven schools, advises Dr. Joni Bastian, vice president for student affairs at McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill. “You may want to include both larger and smaller schools if you are unsure about the size of the campus you want to attend,” she says.

Admission counselors—professionals who work for colleges and universities—will guide you through the decision process but before you apply, consider the following:

Does the college offer quality academic programs?Colleges offer a wide variety of academic programs, from liberal arts to pre-professional. If

a college does not list your major but you are interested in other programs, there may be an opportunity to minor, get an emphasis, pursue independent study or self-design a major.

Undecided on a major? Consider a liberal arts curriculum that will expose you to many subjects as you complete your general education requirements. Ask what services the school provides for helping students decide on a major.

“Remember that it is common to change your major and that it is OK to not declare a major during your first year,” Bastian says.

Make sure you meet academic requirements for application. Many colleges and universities require qualified ACT or SAT scores and these tests are given throughout the year. Some schools require a passing grade on a writing proficiency exam that they give to students seeking admission. Others require high school students to have taken some college preparatory courses. Most colleges want high school records to check an incoming student’s grade point average minimums.

How will you pay for tuition?Schools offer help with applying for grants, loans and a variety of scholarships. These are based

on financial need or good grades and activities outside the classroom. For example, scholarships may be offered to athletes or to students who have been exceptionally active in their schools or communities. There are many independent scholarships which can be researched and applied for online. Additionally, grants are available from the federal and state governments, and from the colleges themselves. A school’s financial aid department can help potential students and their families understand the process for obtaining scholarships, grants and private aid.

Be sure to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine what state and federal support is available based on your family or personal income. Go online to www.fafsa.gov for more information.

Will you live on campus?Living on campus makes it easier to meet people and get involved. “Current research indicates

that students who are engaged with their learning community are more likely to succeed in school,” says Lisa Brennan, coordinator of first-generation student success at McKendree University. “Living on campus is a great way to immerse yourself into the college community.”

Some schools require first and second-year students to live in campus housing; some do not allow them to have vehicles on campus; and others offer limited housing. Compare the cost of room and board to that of commuting from home or living in town.

Do you need special attention?A small student-to-faculty ratio offers more opportunity to participate actively in class, know your

professors and receive personal attention. Many colleges and universities offer tutoring programs or special testing environments to help students achieve academically. If accessibility is an issue, inquire about ways to get around the campus.

Where is the school located?Location is important not only for commuter students but also those who want to get involved

in the community. It can also affect the availability of internships and employment opportunities. Internships are programs that allow students the opportunity to work part-time in the field they are studying. Student interns gain valuable work experience and make connections in their chosen profession.

Urban area colleges and universities may be accessible via public transportation; however, some students may not feel comfortable living in a big city. Suburban schools offer convenient access to the city but transportation may be limited. Rural environments may be considered safe but offer limited professional and cultural opportunities. Safety is an important factor to consider when selecting a school. Be sure to ask what the school does to keep its students safe.

Students who live on campus should account for the cost and means of traveling to and from home for special occasions, holidays and spring breaks.

How does the school encourage independence? For many first-year students, going to college is a step toward independence. Families can help

young students make decisions and will want to stay informed about activities offered at the school. Although privacy laws prohibit sharing grades and attendance records, many schools do offer a variety of sources so families can stay connected and supportive.

Does the college offer co-curricular activities or athletics that interest you?Co-curricular activities and athletics expand students’ participation on campus. Ways to get

involved include student government, residence life, activities and special interest organizations, campus ministries, intercollegiate competition, forensics and debate, Model United Nations, and

academic pursuits such as honor societies, the college newspaper, literary magazine, band or theater. “Remember, getting involved will help you become a part of the learning community and increase the likelihood of completing your degree,” says Brennan.

Consider the athletic events that you like to participate in or watch. Schools offer various levels of intercollegiate athletic competition; some may offer only intramural sports.

Social Greek fraternities and sororities are another way to meet others on campus. Colleges and universities often have special housing for their larger Greek organizations. Other fraternities or sororities focus on community service.

Participation in service learning can strengthen students’ resumes, offering opportunities to gain leadership, public speaking, budget management and planning experience.

Why visit the campus?Visiting the institution is very important, stresses Bastian. “Often you can tell immediately if it is a

good match or not, just by how friendly the campus community is during your visit.”Try to visit at least twice. Arrange the first with an admission counselor. Request a campus tour

that includes a visit to the residence halls where students live, and an opportunity to meet with a professor in your academic field.

If time permits, Bastian suggests attending an event on campus that is open to the public, such as a fine arts or sporting event. “This offers a great opportunity to talk to current students or alumni in an informal setting,” she says. Check websites for special event calendars.

Get to know other prospective students, as well as students currently enrolled. Some admission offices host Facebook groups or live web chats, where prospective students can chat with current students or staff about the institution.

You’ve decided that you want to buy a new a guitar or drumkit. Okay. Now what.

Because a musical instrument is an investment in both money and time, you need to find guidance. Lots of places sell guitars and drums but where do you find the

guidance you need. Are you even aware of what you need?

Once you think that you are serious about investing your time and money in learning to play some type if instrument you need to find a good music store that offers you selection, experience and price.

SelectionDoes the store have a wide variety of guitars and drums to chose from? Do they have several

choices at different levels of experience (beginner, intermediate or professional)? Do they have used instruments that suit your needs? And if you buy for a beginner, will they take a trade in when you are ready for a more advances model?

The more you have to choose from the better equipped you will be to make the correct decision.Experience

How much actual experience with music does the store you have chosen have? A chain store may not give you the same guidance that you would receive from an independently owned store. How much actual musical experience does the sales staff have? Do they have knowledge of all the equipment in the store? Can they answer all your questions? Have they actually used the equipment they are trying to sell you?

The more hands on experience a sales person has the more guidance you will receive for them.Consider product knowledge as well. Is the sales staff knowledgeable and informed about the

productds they are selling? Do they have a “real world” experience with them? You need to be comfortable and confident about what you are buying and who you are buing it from.

Price While price is important, it should not be the deciding factor. Most local music stores have more

flexibility than chain stores to give you a more competitive price. Consider service as well as price. If something needs to be fixed how long will you have to wait?

Does the price quoted include a warranty? If so, what is covered by the warranty and what isn’t. Part of the price of learning to play a musical instrument is lessons. Does this store provide

lessons and at what price?Commitment

How committed to the music industry is this store that you have chosen? Is this just a job or are they committed to keeping music appreciation alive. Do they help local

schools? Music is an art form. There should be a feeling of true interest in keeping that art form alive and growing through future generations. This type of commitment is usually found in your local music store.

Choose a pharmacyHow to. . .

Today’s pharmacies are very different than they used to be. In the past it would be common to go into a pharmacy and be greeted by the employees. They knew the customers’ names, and the customers knew their names.

They were small neighborhood stores that did not always have a huge selection, but they treated their customers very well.

Now pharmacies have changed quite a bit. They have become huge stores owned by large corporations, in many cases. They now have a much larger selection of products from which to choose. They carry groceries along with pharmaceutical goods, attempting to get customers to make them a place for one-stop shopping.

With this change into a different store, it is more important than ever to sift out the good pharmacies from the bad. It is important to take several factors into consideration when choosing a pharmacy to service the prescription needs of you and your family.

The two most basic factors to consider when selecting a pharmacy to use are the hours it stays open and its location.

Location is perhaps the most important factor to consider. You need a pharmacy that is close to your house. If someone in your family gets sick in the middle of the night, then it is nice to know that they pharmacy is only a few minutes away. Some people also select a pharmacy that is on their route home from work. That way they can stop and pick medicine up from the pharmacy very conveniently on their way home.

It is also very important to choose a pharmacy that has convenient business hours. If it is only open during regular business hours, that does not do you a lot of good when your child gets a bout of diarrhea in the middle of the night.

There are pharmacies open 24 hours a day in almost every city in the United States. On the flip side, small, locally owned pharmacies may have more limited hours but offer better, more personal service than the big stores.

For people who do not have insurance that covers their prescriptions, it is a good idea to call potential pharmacies and ask them their policies on discounts on the prescriptions you use.

Many pharmacies now offer extremely low prices on generic versions of medications, so be sure

to utilize a pharmacy that offers this very valuable feature. If you do have insurance that covers your prescriptions, then make sure that the pharmacy you

choose accepts the type of insurance that you carry. Some pharmacies do not accept certain types of insurance, so be sure to ask before you decide on a certain pharmacy just because it is the closest one to your house.

Older patients that are on Medicare need to be careful as well. Some pharmacies do not accept Medicare Part D plans. Due to the fact that there are many different options available on Medicare Part D plans, it is important to make sure that the pharmacy you select will work with the specific option that you have and cover the medications you need.

Finally, it is important to find a pharmacy that has a personable staff. Do the pharmacists and clerks remember your name? Do the pharmacists take the time to walk you through everything you need to know about your medications? Are they happy to answer questions? Make sure to find a pharmacist that is knowledgeable, helpful and friendly.

It is rare to find a pharmacy that will satisfy every one of these criteria, but with a little searching you should be able to find one that fits your needs perfectly.

One of the best ways to change the way a room looks is to change the floor covering, and for many people that floor covering is new carpet.

The purchasing of carpet can also be a large investment, which makes it important to find the correct place to buy. There are a number of things to keep in mind when looking to buy carpet, so here are some tips that will help you find just the right carpet store for your needs.

There are a number of options for purchasing carpeting. Stores range from small retail outlets, to large warehouse type stores. With the advent of online shopping, consumers can also make carpet choices via the Internet. However most consumers still want to see and feel the carpet they may be purchasing, which can only be done in a store or showroom.

Small business carpet stores put their focus on service. They may not be able to provide as large of a selection in-store as many other larger businesses. However, the smaller stores sometimes are part of cooperatives that give them buying power of the larger stores.

They still have to order the products even with a cooperative. But for many consumers, dealing with a local retailer is worth the wait to get their desired carpeting. They feel more comfortable dealing with someone they know on a more personal basis. They also feel more comfortable with the installation and follow-up that can come with a smaller store.

Additionally, these small businesses frequently offer discounts on services after the sale. These discounts, on things such as carpet cleaning, are intended to help bring customers back to the stores for future business.

In many locations, consumers may go to a big-box home and garden store. These chains stores sometimes offer low prices. They can often carry a wide selection, but there are some limits to that selection as well.

The reason these stores can get such low price margins is they buy a limited number of products in high volume. That means the price on the shelf may be lower than in the smaller retail outlets. These stores often don’t provide the same level of services the smaller retail outlets, either. These stores often don’t offer carpet cleaning and extra services that you would get in a smaller retail outlet.

The chains often do offer their own financing plans. Since buying carpet is a big purchase,

sometimes an attractive financing plan can be the difference between buying the carpet a consumer really wants and carpet he or she settles for.

Big warehouse carpet stores are found in many larger cities. In this setting, the salesperson shows carpet samples in the show room. They can also take customers back to a warehouse where they can look through a larger selection.

These warehouse stores often offer a package deal. Once a consumer picks carpet, they can also get padding and installation at a later date included at one price. Although these warehouse stores can offer price breaks, the volumes they deal with can be limiting in other ways.

The staff in these warehouse stores usually are not as well trained as in the smaller retailers. They may not be able to answer all the questions about stain resistant carpet fibers that you would get with a hometown store.

Buying carpet is an important part of beautifying a home, but it is also one of the most expensive parts of home decor. Consumers have many choices for how to purchase that carpet.

Whether it’s from a large warehouse outlet, a big-box chain type store, or a local small business retail outlet, each has unique advantages in making a purchase.

Choose a family restaurantHow to. . .

Selecting a family restaurant can be fun because there are so many different types of food available at convenient locations. No matter which type of food you wish to eat, you’re sure to find one that makes you feel at home without having to travel far.

Restaurants are categorized by both cuisine and class. There are restaurants which are fancy and have high-profile chefs and those that are less expensive but still serve wonderful food with more affordable rates.

Some restaurants focus on the experience and offer a particular theme such as all-you-can-eat buffets and luncheon specials. Others focus on their convenient location, their inexpensive food, and their fast service.

Choosing the restaurant for your family starts with deciding what factors are the most important. After this is done, you have to try the restaurants that have met your criteria in order to find the best choice. This process can take time, but you will wind up with a restaurant that you can trust to provide a great meal no matter what.

You also want to check to see whether the restaurant takes reservations and, if not, are they regularly busy? Although this might mean that the restaurant is high quality, it will pose a problem when you want to go out for an impromptu dinner.

If you are able to plan your meals ahead of time and do not mind waiting, these places often offer the best food and the best service available, which is why they are so popular.

Does the menu of the restaurant match the desires of those who will be eating there? Is there a selection of vegetarian foods? Do they have a broad selection of foods? It is usual for restaurants to offer a large selection, but some are better than others, which is better if you bring other diners there who do not share your specific tastes.

Has the establishment been open for many years? Who is the manager at the restaurant? Is it an individual who has worked in other locations, or someone who is starting out with a new restaurant? Another good sign is seeing the manager walking among the tables and saying “hello” to their patrons.

Are there frequent ads in the newspaper or on television for the restaurant that you are

thinking of going to? Do they offer their patrons coupons or incentives to customers who frequent the establishment? Is there menu information on the Internet, including nutritional facts on all of their food? Do they offer special banquet areas for special functions or catering services? Do they have delivery services?

There are all things you need to ask when picking a family restaurant. There are a lot of criteria for determining the best restaurant for you, your friends, and your

family. One important factor that you may want to consider is the record with the local health officials, and complaints registered with the Better Business Bureau and local Chamber of Commerce.

Are there any complaints that have been registered against the restaurant? If so, what type of complaint was it, and was the problem resolved? Taking a few minutes to look this information up online can sometimes be very helpful.

How to. . . Look 10 years youngerIf you want to be successful in today’s highly competitive, fast paced business

world, it’s important to look your best. If you are one of many individuals looking to stay young, fresh, and vibrant, of course you will want to look as youthful as possible!

Those are some of many reasons why cosmetic procedures are becoming increasingly popular with millions of Americans in every walk of life. Botox, Dermal Fillers such as Juvederm, and a regular regimen of Laser Skin Rejuvenation have helped redefine what it means to grow older: aging gracefully never seemed so easy!

Cosmetic procedures used to be something that people shied away from talking about. In today’s culture, it is very much about giving credit where credit is due. Today, people are more open about their interest in procedures that can help preserve a youthful appearance.

Some treatments that can help improve your appearance and shave years off the way you look are...

Skin RejuvenationWant to improve the texture of your skin, eradicate age spots and sun damage, and

clear the overall signs of aging from your complexion? Then Laser Skin Rejuvenation is for you!

Laser Skin Rejuvenation reverses the harsh effects that unfiltered sunlight has on the delicate skin of your face, neck, and chest, leaving you with a fresh, glowing complexion. Light pulses are used to minimize fine lines, broken capillaries, enlarged pores, and skin redness that for many are an unavoidable consequence of the aging process.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation treatments are also effective against acne, rosacea, and uneven tone or texture of the skin. The process is noninvasive and there is hardly any downtime, so shortly after a treatment you will be out showing off the new and

improved you.Botox

Botox is used to eradicate facial wrinkles. It is minimally invasive, and one treatment lasts about 3 months with results that most people find nothing short of amazing.

Botox injections have become a very common procedure in today’s society, popular with many women – and increasingly with men as well.

This procedure helps relax your your facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles to form around the eyes, forehead, between the brows, and even around the mouth. Botox can also help in raising and lifting the brow and forehead area.

According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS), over 17 million Americans, both male and female, received some type of cosmetic beauty procedure in 2009 – the largest number ever. And that number is growing by leaps and bounds every year!

When you’re looking good, you’re feeling confident. When you’re feeling confident, you are able to accomplish more of the things that are important for you to be able to do – whether it is getting that workplace promotion or just wanting to feel GREAT about the way you look!

Be honest with yourself: Are you completely happy with the way you look? Would turning back the clock give you new enthusiasm for your life? Then like so many many other millions of Americans, you owe it to yourself to consider cosmetic beauty procedures.

Botox and Skin Rejuvenation are easy, cost effective means of improving your appearance; a brow lift, face lift, tummy tuck, and many other surgical procedures require more of a financial commitment, not to mention the downtime.

Cosmetic beauty procedures are one of the very best investments you can make! Many places that offer Botox and Skin Rejuvenation have a wide variety of services to choose from to cater to your specific needs and wants. Experience should be a big part in choosing the right cosmetic specialist for you. Don’t settle for less, expect the best!

Seniors who are of retirement age typically need less space within their home. Because of this, retirement communities need to be considered.

Among the many features which should be evaluated, there are the cost, the community memberships such as tennis and golf, and the amenities that the community possesses such as swimming pools.

Another concern is parking. The majority of seniors who have families require visitor parking which can become a problem when space is inadequate. All of these issues should be considered before committing to a purchase or rental of a retirement unit.

REGULAR ACTIVITIESThe seniors of today are highly health conscious. They wish to remain active after

retirement with activities such as walking, tennis, swimming and golf, so it is essential to ensure that these features are present within the community.

Other activities may include ballroom dancing, chess, and arts and crafts. If you are an avid cyclist, another club to consider would be a cycling club in a community that contains bike paths for its residents. Participating in activities within the community can also improve the social life of the residents.

You also want to see whether the community provides residents with the opportunity to participate in activities off-site such as visiting museums and trips to the movie theater.

MEDICAL FACILITIESConduct research prior to choosing a facility so that you can determine where the

closest hospitals, doctors, ambulance service and medical technicians are located. You should also choose a community which is close to your personal physician.

It would be best if the community also offered a basic emergency plan. Additionally, check the retirement unit for features to ensure safety such as railings in the bathroom

and in the entry ways.

PETSIf you have a pet that you do not want to leave behind, this is another feature to

consider. Some communities will allow you to bring your pet while others will not. Additionally, a park or a dog walking area nearby would be a large advantage to

your pet, particularly if you have an animal which needs to be walked on a daily basis.

CHURCHES, LIBRARIES AND SCHOOLSSeniors typically prefer to live in less congested, quite areas for their retirement.

Because of this, you should check the community’s proximity to schools as school activities can lead to high traffic congestion at times.

You should also know where the libraries and churches are located as well as where public transportation such as trains and buses are found. You also want to ask if the community provides its own transportation for local trips.

Many communities have minivans and buses that will provide short-distance transportation. This is extremely helpful when your car is in the repair shop and you find you need to do grocery shopping.

THE COMMUNITYWhen selecting a retirement community, you also want to see how happy the current

residents seem to be. Usually, first impressions can be lasting impressions. You’ll want to enjoy your new residence and your new community to make the

transition to retirement a good one and, hopefully, make new friends.

How to. . . Choose a chiropractorChoosing a chiropractor can be a challenge for people. Perhaps one

has heard the typical horror stories about going to a chiropractor of being popped, twisted, painful treatments, or worse yet, having a stroke when the neck is twisted. A person should experience little

to no pain being adjusted most generally. Chiropractic adjustments are safe; any adverse effects from a chiropractic adjustment are extremely rare (1 in millions of adjustments).

First, let’s talk about “what is chiropractic?” Chiropractic from the original Greek definition means “done by hand.” Chiropractic is the philosophy, science and art which addresses the anatomical relationships of the vertebral bodies, their adjacent structures, the nerve transmission and patho-physiological, clinical and radiological manifestations which exists. In other words, a vertebra is not its proper position or not moving properly causing a muscular problem or nerve interference which in turn over a period of time may cause an organ to disease. As long ago as 1921, D. Henry Windsor, a medical doctor, did a study of 50 deceased patients, evaluating diseased organ tissues. He discovered on 139 diseased organs, 138 showed obstructed nerve supply from the spine to diseased organs. Based on his findings, he concluded logically that vertebral subluxations (spinal misalignments) can contribute to the development of disease. The nervous system is the master system of the body. It controls and regulates all other systems and relates the entity to its environment. The chiropractor adjusts the bones of the spine thereby allowing muscles and the nervous system to function more optimally creating a healthier, well being. The life force of the body, the inborn intelligence that resides within the body from birth to burial is what chiropractic works with, enabling the power that made the body to heal the body by adjusting the subluxation complex (the vertebra and its related structures). An adjustment is the application of a precise directional force to the vertebrae. What makes chiropractic care unique is the subluxation complex.

First, if it is CHIROPRACTIC, being adjusted, that you are looking for, you need to know what the primary focus of the chiropractor you choose. Are you going to be adjusted? Is your best interest at heart? A genuine clinical indication should be present for any service, product, nutritional supplement, or test performed (CT, lab tests) or treatment of any kind to be recommended or ordered for a patient. Recommendations should be based upon a genuine intended therapeutic benefit to the patient. Are orthopedic, neurological, chiropractic, spinal and kinesiological (muscle testing) examinations performed to ascertain and correlate the nature of your condition? Chiropractic should be the main life force of a chiropractic practice, putting the patient’s interests first and foremost.

To begin the search for a professional, competent chiropractor, your best source of finding a chiropractor is to ask a friend or someone you trust who has had a positive, pleasant experience with chiropractic. Referrals are the highest compliment given to any professional. Many times your insurance is a determining factor in making a choice.

Writing down your questions prior to contacting a chiropractor will help you and him/her keep clarity in the discussion of your condition. You should also have a list of medications that you may be taking (These should ALWAYS be carried in your billfold with the insurance cards). Do you feel comfortable with the doctor? Will your expectations be met? Does the chiropractor walk, talk and look the picture of health is the office environment pleasant?

Optimum health is not merely the absence of disease, but a state of physical and mental well being. Help your body be the best it can be through natural chiropractic care. Many patients experience the amazing effects of a chiropractic lifestyle – not just pain relief, but an overall wellness encompassing mind, body and spirit. Absence of pain does not necessarily suggest health.

Discover New Dealers

Why

Finding a reliable used car dealer can be a exhausting and difficult search. With thousands of dollars of your money at stake, it is in the buyer’s best interest to take the time to look into the market and find a retailer that best suits his or her needs.

The used car industry has a reputation of being rife with lemons, bad deals and shady businessmen, so a little research into the market can go a long way in saving some cash.

The best reason to buy a used car from a retailer as opposed to a private party is pretty simple: the retailer can offer extras and warranties that an individual cannot, guaranteeing that your vehicle is mechanically sound and offering service or a replacement if it is not.

The best place to start is with your friends and family. People who have bought used cars from a dealer often know the best place to start looking, as well as who to stay away from. These experiences can be very useful in finding a retailer who will fulfill their obligation to provide a quality vehicle and excellent customer service to boot.

A few questions to ask these people with previous car buying experience include the quality and price of the vehicle they purchased, the warranty offered, and whether or not the terms of the sale were clearly laid out at the time of purchase.

If a truly phenomenal experience was had, it’s a good idea to get the name of the person who actually sold the car, and try to deal with that person only. Usually if you are sent to a dealership on referral, the retailer will happily provide you with the services of a recommended salesman.

There are two other sources that can be useful in ruling out potential “lemon dealers.” The Better Business Bureau and the state attorney general both keep records of dealerships and complaints or lawsuits filed against them. This won’t help you find a good dealer, but it will help you rule out dealers you might not want to do business with.

Many people who buy used cars say that the best place to find a good deal with a

proper warranty is from the manufacturer dealership. The advantage of this is that manufacturer ’s dealership will be able to offer warranties and factory certifications on their vehicles. While other used car dealers can offer warranties, very few besides manufacturer-endorsed dealerships will be able to offer a factory certification.

This could go a long way toward saving money in repairs or the need for third-party warranties. The new dealership may charge a slightly higher price, but there are some valid reasons for this. Their technicians are used to working on vehicles of their brand, and in many cases are trained by the factories themselves to service their cars. Their prices are usually higher, though — in some cases significantly more expensive — so you need to balance your needs with your budget.

Verify that any dealership, whether manufacturer or otherwise, offers a Carfax report for every vehicle. Sometimes dealerships will attempt to sell cars with flood damage or persistent mechanical problems at a large volume to make up the money lost.

For instance, shortly after Hurricane Katrina, the used car market was inundated with vehicles that had been damaged, repaired and resold. Requesting a third-party report is a necessity when buying a used car, and often the dealer will offer the service for free.

If they refuse, you can either buy a report yourself for around $30 or find a new dealer who will provide information as to the condition of the car.

Don’t be afraid to bring your own mechanic or even a mechanically inclined friend. People who deal with cars on a regular basis will be able to notice and diagnose issues that you might not even see at first. A reputable dealer will have no problem submitting a used car to inspection by a mechanic.

By educating yourself as to what you’re looking for you can insure that your used car will remain functional off the lot for years to come.

How to. . .Recognize the signs of a heart attackHeart attacks are dangerous occurrences that are all too often dismissed

as minor conditions such as indigestion or heartburn.

If treatment is not sought, though, lasting damages may be inevitable. There are several warning signs which should be looked for when trying to determine whether you are having a heart attack.

One of these signs is chest pressure, with some individuals describing the feeling as being similar to having an elephant standing on their chest. Any pains in the chest should always be examined. Failure to analyze the situation can lead to worse heart attacks in the future.

When tightness or pain is experienced, call 911 immediately in order to obtain emergency aid.Shortness of breath may also be a sign of heart attacks. If problems with breathing arise,

attention should be paid. If you are suddenly unable to breathe or experience any other warning symptoms, a heart attack may be occurring. It is essential to remain calm when breath becomes short as the experience can be highly stressful and frightening.

Some people experience pain in the arms, back or shoulders when they are undergoing a heart attack. Individuals have complained that they have experienced shooting pains in their arms for no reason whatsoever. This could be an indicator that future coronary problems are imminent.

Some individuals have claimed that the pain has been felt higher in the body such as the neck and even the jaw. These pains should never be ignored, particularly if they occur along with additional heart attack symptoms.

If a person experiences vomiting or cold sweats along with pain in the limbs or chest, they should contact the hospital immediately so that they can obtain any treatment that they need. Some individuals have dismissed a heart attack as a common cold or influenza that has occurred due to cold weather or contagions. In short, a patient should never take any symptoms for granted, no matter how seemingly minor.

Other possible symptoms include racing pulse, profuse sweating, or short periods in which consciousness is lost. In order to obtain the help that the victim requires, immediate action needs to take place in order to make sure that there are no lasting damages resulting from myocardial infarction.

Excessive sweating during a heart attack is not at all related to the type of sweating that is experienced when a person exercises for long periods of time. This form of sweating produces more sweat in a short time period instead of perspiration which occurs during normal exercise. A high pulse or loss of consciousness are two sure signs that emergency help needs to be obtained.

Approximately 500,000 fatalities that occur each year within the U.S. are due to heart attacks. It is dangerous and is often ignored until far too late. Any symptoms need to be taken seriously if the patient has a chance of surviving the heart attack.

Make sure that emergency services are immediately obtained so that an EMT will assess the attack and perform the required techniques that are needed to ensure survival.
