MESSAGE FROM

THE DEAN, FACULTY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

UNIVERSITI TECHNOLOGI MALAYSIA

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME), Institute for Vehicle Systems and Engineering

(IVeSE) and FME’s Post-Graduate Student Society are co-organizing the 1st Multidisciplinary

Conference on Mechanical Engineering (McME 2016). This multidisciplinary conference is

named as such after taking cognizant of the broad areas of research being conducted by the

staff and students of the faculty which is in line with the numerous programs offered by the FME

both at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. The programs encompass the Mechanical

Engineering field with specialization in Materials, Manufacturing, Automotive, Aeronautical and

Industrial Engineering as well as Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering. McME 2016

aims at providing a platform for the students and staff to present their research findings. It also

provides an avenue for the students to hone their writing skills and the completed papers are

included in an e-proceeding thus enabling the knowledge and research findings to be shared

thus creating enthusiasm among the readers in the broad areas of Mechanical Engineering. I

wish to take this opportunity to thank all McME 2016 Organizing Committee members for their

tireless effort in ensuring the success of the conference. Thanks also go to all participants of

McME 2016 for their contributions.

PREFACE

As the Chairman of the organizing committee of The First Multidisciplinary Conference on

Mechanical Engineering, McME2016, I would like to welcome all participants and presenters to

our conference. The conference topics cover a broad research areas including solid

mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer, aeronautical engineering,

automotive engineering, material science, marine and ocean engineering, manufacturing

engineering, industrial and systems engineering and also mechanical design as well as other

related topics. Originally, this conference is intended to boost the publication of Faculty of

Mechanical Engineering staff as well as becoming a platform for newcomers to learn some

experience in presenting technical papers at conference. However, this conference was open

to all postgraduate students, staff and researchers throughout Malaysia to share their research

findings. This will actually allow us to share more research experiences amongst us. It will be a

good research findings forum and is expected to be an annual event in the future.The

conference is on the 29th of November 2016 at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai, Johor. I

hope you all will have a good deliberation during the conference and wish you all success in

your research. Looking forward to your participation in McME 2016.

PLENARY SPEAKER

Emeritus Professor Dr. Mohamed Shariff Nabi Baksh

Title: Publish or Perish in Context of Roles of a

University.

Abstract:

This short talk will discuss the different roles of a university to put Publish and Perish in

context. The transition of UTM from Technical College to Research University is

reviewed together with the accompanying changing roles/goals and expectations from

staff. The changes in working environment to encourage research and writing are

highlighted. Some issues with Publish and Perish are raised. Finally, the talk reiterates

that staff and postgraduate students have no choice but to publish, publish early and

publish frequently.

Biography

Emeritus Prof. Dr. Mohamed Shariff Bin Nabi Baksh was awarded a B.Sc. (First Class

Honours) in Production Engineering from the University of Aston in Birmingham, UK, in

1974, Master of Science in Engineering and Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations

Engineering in 1978 and 1986, respectively, from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

He had served UTM for 31 years beginning his career as Assistant Lecturer ‘A’ in 1974.

He was appointed Associate Professor in 1988 and became a Professor in 1997. He

had held various administrative positions, such as head of laboratory, head of Industrial

Engineering panel (1987 – 2003) and Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

(1988 – 1989) and was awarded the tile of Emeritus Professor by UTM in 2016.

His areas of specialization are simulation, engineering economics, quality, and industrial

development studies. He has conducted and supervised many projects on productivity

and quality improvements for local industries and other institutions. One of his major

projects was being the head of Advanced Product Support Technology (APoST) project

with partner universities from United Kingdom, Germany, Greece and Thailand. He was

also involved in a subsequent project, Eurasian Network for Product Lifecycle Support

and Training (AEPSTRA), involving the same partners. Both these projects were funded

by the European commission under the Asia ITC initiative. At the state level, he was

involved in feasibility studies for setting up industries as well as studies on industrial

development strategies for Johor. He was the lead consultant for the Machinery and

Engineering Cluster in the Johor Industrial Master Plan (1997). After retirement he was

lead consultant in manufacturing aspects in two Johor Economic development plans.
